Premise: A small English town is sent into a tizzy when an unpopular local official is found dead in the vicar‘s study.

Review: This was great. Miss Marple is a wonderful and unique protagonist and I love the way she tends to be a solve the mystery while on the sidelines from the main action. This also acts as an effective small town satire. I really enjoyed this.

It is difficult to know quite where to begin this story, but I have fixed my choice on a certain Wednesday at luncheon at the Vicarage.

Finally finished my first book of 2025!
This was a really good showing for Agatha Christie - definitely more on me than on her that it took me almost two weeks to read.
I ask for a Christie book every year from our work Secret Santa, and it‘s always fun to see what my colleagues pick for me 🤗
And, as ever, I didn‘t come close to guessing the true culprit.

Now that I've finished my journey with Poirot, I'm on to Miss Marple. I honestly didn't really vibe with her at first, she seemed like a minor character for much of this story, as we follow the vicar through the events. But I loved how she was in everyone's business and the way the police had faith in her deductions by the end

Just discovered this website - it has a huge collection of replica books jackets heaps of golden age crime ones…. Might be tempted the get one and frame it for my little reading space.

My February pick for #12Booksof2023 is a classic

The first full-length mystery starring Miss Marple is a bit hit & miss for me. The main issue for me was that the book was told from the POV of an extremely boring character: the local vicar. Both he & his younger wife (& some of the other characters) were extremely rude about the older women of the village & it felt really uncalled for. Then I realised that Christie was showing us the disdain & dismissal that older women are viewed with.

I‘ve decided to reread all of Agatha Christie‘s novels starting with Marple. It‘s been years since I read some of them that I can‘t remember them all. I always enjoy a Christie although Poirot is my favourite and I‘m not as keen on the Tommy and Tuppence books

The first Miss Marple book (although GR has it listed as book 2). I wouldn‘t call Miss Marple the main character of this book, but she does solve the mystery. Not much more to say that hasn‘t already been said about the book…

I love Miss Marple! She‘s eccentric, she‘s observant, she‘s just wonderful. I look forward to reading more Miss Marple books.

So, I switched back from Pratchett to Christie. Seems to be a good system for my commute - moving back and forth from Discworld to the world of murders.
I didn‘t know that Miss Marple actually doesn‘t take up a main character‘s position in the first novel. I hope this changed in the following novels.

I sincerely hope the Miss Marple books come to more closely resemble the collection of short stories with the same character, as I enjoyed that collection much more than this.
Perhaps the formula suffers in trying to make it novel length. 1/?

I always enjoyed Agatha Christie cozy mysteries. There was a murder in this small town and everyone has an opinion of what happened. As the vicar said “The whole village of St Mary Mead probably knows exactly where you keep your toothbrush and what kind of tooth powder you use...if you change your shaving cream it will be a topic of conversation”🤣Miss Marple, who they said past her time looking through the window😳will discover the mystery⬇️

Yes I loved this mystery! And I actually have never read Agatha Christie before- (except And Then There Were None) but this was charming, similar to a cozy, humor and intrigue. Another example that English villages are rather deadly places- so glad this was picked for the #goldenagecrimeclub kickoff

Like an afternoon spent with an old friend, catching up and hearing all the news of the village. Such a treat. And, I remembered very little. I love Miss Marple and her debut here is so good. Plus, the Vicar's narration is particularly delightful. Looking forward to chatting about it with #goldenagecrimeclub tomorrow. Also, marveling about how so many mysteries that came after echo bits of this.

Like @TheAromaofBooks said, I've read this multiple times but I'm always surprised anew by the outcome. I'm not sure what this means—but for me it's super fun to find that the Christie books tend to be mysteries that keep on giving. Great period detail about an English village & how it views women/spinsters/elderly ladies, which means certain troubling elements, as well. I appreciate the sharp wit & the vicar's POV. #GoldenAgeCrimeClub @Mitch

Finished my reread for #goldenagecrimeclub, so I‘m all set for next week‘s discussion. Richard E. Grant‘s narration was delightful and I enjoyed the mystery, misogyny aside. Miss Marple doesn‘t annoy me nearly as much as Poirot. 😂

I'm always happy for an excuse to revisit any of Christie's books, so even though I have read this one several times, when I saw it was January's pick for the #GoldenAgeCrimeClub I was happy to reread!! I never seem to remember how this one is going to turn out. The red herrings are laid so well. I absolutely love the vicar and his wife as well, and despite there being quite a few characters, I never felt overwhelmed by them. Miss Marple is ⬇️

I had such fun reading Agatha after years & years! How she accomplishes detailed characterization through dialogue delighted me. The intricate plot kept me guessing.
2nd in a series,RFM was more engaging than the 1st in the series.1948 CA.Reporter Charley H works to exonerate her friend Dan,jailed for murder. #historicalmystery

I refuse to take another picture of the cover of this, as it's truly hideous. I've never liked a book so much that I hated to look at and touch. Weird reading experience 🤣

That being said, I loved this! And I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the first Miss Marple. I was taken aback by her not being the narrator, though. I will be reading the next in this series.

Finally read the very first #Marple and it was a delight! At first I thought ‘more Marple, please!‘ but Christie knows her business and it was the perfect build-up in getting to know Jane Marple and how people underestimate her. The vicar as narrator and the intro to the village were perfect. The mystery well done. The surprise was the wit and humor in the dialogue. Such a good read!

- I enjoyed her being introduced as a side character and not the narrator
- This is twisty and the people are complex/complicated
- Many people had motive
- The town setting was cozy

- Got some characters mixed up - there were many

It's a breezy, overcast day which is a nice break from the typical 94* afternoons we've had lately, so I decided to do some reading at the park! Dare I say...it's feeling a bit like Florida Fall! 👀👀👀

Already kicked off my #20in4 #readathon I‘m about halfway through the audiobook of the 1st full Marple novel on Scribd, read by Richard.E.Grant. Set in her village of St Mary Mead, it‘s a wonderful #whodidntdoit Colonel Protheroe is on of the most despised people in the village, so when he‘s shot it‘s a case of who didn‘t have a motive? Miss Marple is such a lovely detective! How could I ever pick a favorite? I can‘t even choose a favorite author! I love them all equally: Dorothy & Agatha & Georges & Arthur & Raymond & Walter…🔍 this was a great start for the #sharreadathon ~7 hrs audio reading logged, largely while walking on the beach

I'm on a bit of a cozy crime fiction spree at the moment and thought I should try Agatha Christie. I started with the first Poirot and followed it up with the first Miss Marple. There is a reason her books are so well read.

I really enjoyed reading this. I could picture the village and the characters. I have watched a number of adaptions which possibly coloured my imaginings. However I'm definitely looking forward to the next one.

This is Agatha‘s first Mis Marple Mystery story. As you can tell as she is barely in the story besides being said to be the cooth who lives next door to the murder location. No, I still didn‘t guess the murder, but it was slow going for me. Very misleading and round about. Generalizations galore. Enjoyable, as all her books are though. Interesting point of view being from the vicar himself - was his place the murder was done. #AgathaChristie

I found this mystery delightful! Miss Marple is a dear and I love the relationship between Len and Griselda. I feel like Christie found something of her stride with writing characters in this one. I mean, sure, they're still types, but they seem more 3-dimensional than usual with her books. I also appreciate the vicar as narrator; his profession gives him an excuse to hear from so many different characters.

"Griselda laughed, blew me a kiss, and departed through the window."

Agatha Christie's characters are always entering and exiting through the window, and it always takes an effort to stop picturing them climbing through a little vertical sash window and see French doors instead.

I went on a Miss Marple minibinge the last couple days. I forgot how funny these stories can be! #cozymystery #cozies

Forgot to post my recap of my May 2021 #BookSpinBingo. Got a bingo for the first time in a few months (northeast corner to southwest corner).

How did I miss out on reading this book, despite having seen both the Joan Hickson and the Geraldine McEwan adaptations? This was a good first novel for Marple, and the vicar made a suitable narrator.

The prompt “Cottage” makes me think immediately of Miss Marple and her life in the village of St. Mary Mead.

I have a sweet tooth for the mystery genre and Christie is one of my all time favorites. I would love to take tea with Miss Marple and listen to her chat about village life, if I could enter into a fictional universe. ☕️ 💜
