Diary of a Provincial Lady
Diary of a Provincial Lady | E. M. Delafield
51 posts | 40 read | 87 to read
E. M. Delafield's largely autobiographical novel takes the form of a journal written by an upper-middle-class lady living in a Devonshire village. Written with humour, this charming novel is full of the peculiarities of daily life. The Provincial Lady of the title attempts to avoid disaster and prevent chaos from descending upon her household. But with a husband reluctant to do anything but doze behind The Times, mischievous children and trying servants, it's a challenge keeping up appearances on an inadequate income, particularly in front of the infuriating and haughty Lady Boxe. As witty and delightful today as when it was first published in 1930, Diary of a Provincial Lady is a brilliantly observed comic novel and an acknowledged classic. This beautiful Macmillan Collector's Library edition features an introduction by author and journalist Christina Hardyment. Designed to appeal to the book lover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift-editions of much loved classic titles. Macmillan Collector's Library are books to love and treasure.

So witty and entertaining! Her life (seemingly filled with more downs than ups at times) is all too relatable!

(The copy from my shelf pictured with my winter bulbs in bowls 😉)

My out-of-town relatives have departed, so while this week was quite busy, it didn't feel as out-of-control as the two weeks before that!! A little more reading was accomplished, but still slow - catching up on things around the house and still SO MANY PEACHES!! 😂 I'm more or less hopelessly behind on reviews, so here is the sum-up:
-Tagged book was my #LMPBC read and I really enjoyed it. Lots of humor and a fascinating glimpse into a different ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) era. Checked off 1930 for #192025 as well, plus Chicory Coffee for #Pantone2022.
-The Worst Best Man was okay, but I never warmed up to the MC, who spent most of her time whining. Plus, the whole “we're just having sex, it doesn't mean anything“ is definitely towards the bottom of my enjoyable romance trope list. Still, not a bad read, just not completely my style. This one was drawn as a #TBRDeckofCards read and also checked off 2020 ⬇
2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) for #192025.
-The Railway Children was a reread for me and this month's #ChildrensClassicRead - I absolutely loved it, as I do all of Nesbit's writing. I'd forgotten how much more grounded in the “real world“ this one is - no fantasy elements at all. I found myself wanting an entire book about the children's mother. You have to stretch credulity a bit because really, how many people can three small children save in one summer, but still ⬇
2y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) overall delightful.
-Exposure has been on my TBR for a while. For some reason, I thought it was the adult perspective of The Railway Children, & it kind of is, except updated & set in the 1960s instead. I just wasn't feeling it so I bailed.
-Current read is The Small Bachelor by Wodehouse - absolutely delightful as always. ⬇

I couldn‘t stop laughing as I read this book for #LMPBC Round 15 #GroupL. The author‘s dry self-deprecating wit is right up my alley. It reminded me of reading Erma Bombeck. The book is supposedly semi-autobiographical, and I really enjoyed the glimpse into the life of an upper middle class English family in the 1930s. Truly a different world.

It‘s on its way to you, @TheAromaofBooks . Hope you enjoy!

What a hoot! I adored this quick read of a genteel woman‘s attempts to keep up with society‘s expectations during rather hard times in the 1930s. Has that satiric edge, like Nancy Mitford, that I love. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was interesting if you like knowing the minutia of everyday life of others. It reminds me a lot of Mrs. Tim and the Regiment. It also reminds me of a book of letters I read a long time ago by Wallis Simpson before her marriage to the Duke of Windsor. Similarity comes from the constant worrying of if there is money enough to have parties, go on foreign travel and trouble finding servants. Surprisingly, for me the narrator remains likable.

My latest acquisition of @persephonebooks titles. This month, I‘m planning on reading either, ‘Patience‘ by John Coates or ‘The Fortnight in September‘ by R. C. Sherriff. ‘Diary of a Provincial Lady‘ by E. M. Delafield, is a firm favourite of mine. If you‘re in need of a light hearted, comical read, do pick this lovely book up. It would be an especially warming read right now, when we‘re all in need of a generous dose of good cheer.

merelybookish @erzascarletbookgasm Ive had some email correspondence. They think it was shipped to the US instead. 🤦 But may take 5-8 weeks before they can determine where it is and/or issue a refund. 🙄 Anyway, some day in May it may be all sorted out. 😆. I ordered three books at the same time. The Mary Oliver, a John Keats collection and Sylvia Plath's Ariel. Why 1/3 made it is a mystery! I'm disappointed for both of us. 6y

I can‘t think why it took me so long to read this. I‘m a delayed gratification person to no end when it comes to books, but I‘m thinking of making 2018 my year of reading 5-⭐️ predictions.

This book was so funny, witty, satirical and hard to believe it was written in 1930! It‘s timeless really. Running a household is still challenging, and sometimes we buy dresses (or books) when our account is overdrawn and we don‘t want to adult. 🌹🌹🌹🌹 #vmc

A #ruralsetting for this one, if not particularly secluded. My journey is very rural though! (Difficult to get a good picture from a moving train)

LauraBrook That's beautiful! 8y
Moray_Reads @LauraBrook We're not quite in Brontë country, too far west, but the landscape is similar 8y
LeahBergen Sigh. Lucky you! (Query: How is the book? 😂 Her queries are making me chuckle!) 8y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen really and consistently funny. I love how she writes all the retorts she WOULD have said if A) it wasn't too impolite and B) she had thought of it at the time 😂 8y

There's nothing like a train for a truly appalling cup of tea. On the plus side the book is hilarious, just what I need for a tedious journey

LeahBergen I just started this today! 👍🏼 8y
saresmoore I'm sending peace your way! I just did FOUR flights & three airports in two days, so I feel your pain. 8y

Moray_Reads @saresmoore oh my! I'm cursed even it comes to travel but I can't compete with that! 8y
LeahBergen @saresmoore Whew! Are you home and decompressing now? 😬 8y
LeahBergen @Moray_Reads 😂😂 Other people sniggering at books is so annoying! I always want to know what they are reading. 8y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen I can already tell this is going to be a go-to book for light relief 8y

ValerieAndBooks Yep 👍 , this is how I get my cheap thrills too! With two kids currently in college, I have to most of the time. Sometimes I feel bad that authors or their estate don't profit directly from me, but at least used book sellers do! And it's fun looking. 8y

@bookriot #riotgrams day 23 - Funny Books

I'm going with a book that is just as hilarious now as when it was published in 1930. DIARY OF A PROVINCIAL LADY is comprised of scenes in the life of an upper-middle class British woman. It's so full of sarcasm and wit (with illustrations like this one) that I dare you not to laugh!

Verity I love this book. So witty. 8y

She is never alone when she has Her Books. Books, to her, are Friends. Give her Shakespeare or Jane Austen, Meredith or Hardy, and she is Lost - lost in a world of her own. She sleeps so little that most of her nights are spent reading.

When you get to the party and there's someone else wearing your outfit #persephonebooks #macmillancollectorslibrary

#recommendsday - both THE DIARY OF A PROVINCIAL LADY and CHEERFUL WEATHER FOR THE WEDDING are wonderful reads, the former quite hilarious and the later much less so.

DGRachel That's fantastic! 8y
CarolynOliver Ha! I loved Cheerful Weather for the Wedding. 8y
BooksForYears @CarolynOliver I also enjoyed the film adaption but, as is usually the case, I prefer the book. 8y

Pickpick

DIARY OF A PROVINCIAL LADY, told as a year's worth of journal entries, is a book of two levels. On one, it is a quaint tale of rural British life in the late 1920s. On the other, commentary on British and foreign classes. Many comparisons to BRIDGET JONES' DIARY, especially the fancy dress party.

"December 24. - Take entire family to children's party at neighbouring Rectory. Robin says Damn three times in the Rector's hearing, an expression never used by him before or since, but apparently reserved for this unsuitable occasion."

ScorpioBookDreams Are these editions good quality? I love the covers and very tempted to buy a few. 8y
Readliterature @ScorpioBookDreams Yes, in my opinion they are! The covers are not glossy, (i don't know if that's a plus or not) and they are durable. I definitly recommend these! 8y
