A House in the Sky
A House in the Sky: A Memoir | Amanda Lindhout, Sara Corbett
The spectacularly dramatic memoir of a woman whose curiosity about the world led her from rural Canada to imperiled and dangerous countries on every continent, and then into fifteen months of harrowing captivity in Somaliaa story of courage, resilience, and extraordinary grace. The dramatic and redemptive memoir of a woman whose curiosity led her to the worlds most beautiful and remote places, its most imperiled and perilous countries, and then into fifteen months of harrowing captivityan exquisitely written story of courage, resilience, and grace As a child, Amanda Lindhout escaped a violent household by paging through issues of National Geographic and imagining herself in its exotic locales. At the age of nineteen, working as a cocktail waitress in Calgary, Alberta, she began saving her tips so she could travel the globe. Aspiring to understand the world and live a significant life, she backpacked through Latin America, Laos, Bangladesh, and India, and emboldened by each adventure, went on to Sudan, Syria, and Pakistan. In war-ridden Afghanistan and Iraq she carved out a fledgling career as a television reporter. And then, in August 2008, she traveled to Somaliathe most dangerous place on earth. On her fourth day, she was abducted by a group of masked men along a dusty road. Held hostage for 460 days, Amanda converts to Islam as a survival tactic, receives wife lessons from one of her captors, and risks a daring escape. Moved between a series of abandoned houses in the desert, she survives on memoryevery lush detail of the world she experienced in her life before captivityand on strategy, fortitude, and hope. When she is most desperate, she visits a house in the sky, high above the woman kept in chains, in the dark, being tortured. Vivid and suspenseful, as artfully written as the finest novel, A House in the Sky is the searingly intimate story of an intrepid young woman and her search for compassion in the face of unimaginable adversity.

4.5/5 ⭐️ As disturbing this book was, I really enjoyed it. I think why I liked it is the brutal honesty that Amanda described her captivity.

One thing I would have liked to have a bit more information on is about her life post captivity, but that was really the only downside to the book. #2024 #bookreview #nonfiction #canadian #bookclub #truestory

Haunting, disturbing, lacerating, and all the superlatives of suffering! I was exhausted after reading this book that everything I read before seemed bland. An astonishing survival tale distinguished by its aching tenderness and ferocious beauty, A House In The Sky was the most riveting kidnapping narrative I've read this year, or ever. I was glued from start to finish. 👇

thevagabondlawyer I was wondering, my heart breaking, how much inhumanity can we really take in? How to live in a world full of hatred? How to even hope when there seems to be no hope at all? This book offers that hope, that light, that life! Yes, it's terrying, but you know what, stories like these need to be read, to be shared, if only to awaken a glimmer of whatever good-heartedness left in us. 👏👊 4y

Amanda Lindhout grew up in a tempestuous home, rife with abuse and turmoil. Her form of escape lay in the National Geographic magazines that she collected and devoured, yearning for somewhere, anywhere, AWAY. As an adult, therefore, she dived into a traveling lifestyle, yearning for adventure. She says, "being in motion made me easygoing in a way I hadn't felt before" (32). ⬇️

UnabridgedPod Exploring new countries and cultures was relaxing and peaceful for her, so much so that she decided to pursue a career in international photojournalism and began traveling to more dangerous parts of the world where she thought she can make a difference. With her ex-boyfriend and friend Nigel, Amanda decides to cover the war in Somalia. ⬇️ 5y
UnabridgedPod It's here that the book takes a turn when she and Nigel are kidnapped by a group who demands a ransom from their families. (If you‘re interested in the remainder of my lengthy review, check out my IG post @ jen.loves.books—sorry I can‘t post the whole thing here.) 5y

My first DNF of 2020. I don't think it was a bad book or even that it was poorly written. But I just didn't care about the story. Amanda writes about travelling to all these countries all over the world but doesn't really describe what any of those countries are like at all. It just kind of fell flat which I think is pretty disappointing for a biography/memoir. I stopped just after she left Afganistan and travelled back to India.

Penny_LiteraryHoarders I was conflicted reading this one too. Lots of banging head into wall about her decisions and putting others in jeopardy but it was very readable. 5y

Finished. This true account of a Canadian woman who was kidnapped in Somalia and held captive for over a year will haunt you. Read it, but be prepared to feel anger, sorrow, shock. Given the news lately and all the cases of sexual harassment we have been bombarded with, it‘s hard for me not to dwell on the author‘s treatment at the hands of her captors vs. her male companion‘s treatment. The world is a more dangerous place for a woman. Period.

A House in the Sky: A Memoir | Amanda Lindhout, Sara Corbett

Pickpick

This was a hard read. When I reminded myself that what I was reading actually happened to Amanda, I cringed. And then I would tell myself: she lives, she writes this book. And that is how I kept reading.
But I warn you, especially as a woman, this book scares me. And there were tears, really tears.
Has anyone read Nigel's book?
