Serafina and the Black Cloak
Serafina and the Black Cloak | Robert Beatty
Venture into the spooky world of Serafina and the Black Cloak - the New York Times bestselling magical mystery adventure for children "Never go into the forest, for there are many dangers there, and they will ensnare your soul. Serafina and her pa have secretly lived in the basement of the grand old house on the Biltmore Estate, surrounded by dark forests, for as long as Serafina can remember. She takes the greatest of care never to be seen. But when children at Biltmore start disappearing, only Serafina knows who the culprit is: a terrifying man in a black cloak who stalks the corridors at night. To solve the mystery, Serafina teams up with Braden Vanderbilt, the nephew of the estates owners. Their search for answers leads them into the very forest Serafina has always been taught to fear. There, they discover a legacy of magic, long forgotten - until now . . . Robert Beatty is the debut and New York Times bestselling author of the magical and mystery middle grade thriller Serafina and the Black Cloak and its enchanting sequel Serafina and the Twisted Staff. He lives in the forested Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina with his wife and three daughters (and four cats, four dogs and four horses). robert-beatty.com !--EndFragment--

1. I got my new pairs of glasses in! Tried a round frame this time around, as well as square. I only ever do rectangle. Took this pic to send to my best friend when I got them in. Feeling very Potter-ish in these round ones. 😆
2. Only about 30 minutes away to my sister's house in Pearland where I will be cooking bc she ruptured her Achilles tendon.
3. Family time tomorrow!
4. Pictured!
5. 👍 My daughter's new favorite.

Kayla.Adriena I like the glasses! It almost looks like they don't have lenses! 12mo
madamereadsalot1 @Kayla.Adriena I know! I got the anti-reflect on them, I've never done that before. But they don't show up in pictures very well, unless there's a colored light or something in front of me. Then you can see colored spots on it. It's weird though, because the shape makes em feel more like fashion glasses over actual prescription. 12mo

I really enjoyed this, and am looking forward to continuing the series, but don‘t feel compelled to devour it. Which is nice, as I have zero time or drive to read at the moment.

A just-spooky-enough villain to create some good tension, coupled with a creepy forbidden-woods setting for much of the action. Serafina is a good heroine and Braeden is a good companion.
4/5⭐️ (cont in comments)

ravenlee I loved all the hints about Serafina‘s true nature, which I had guessed pretty early. But I think for a MG novel the clues aren‘t too much. My favorite hint was how she felt about the chess set. It made me laugh out loud! 1y

For young readers who like their books on the scary side -- this is a perfect read. Serafina lives in secret in the boiler room of the Biltmore mansion. When children at the estate start vanishing, she gets pulled into an adventure to stop the dark forces at work.

lauralovesbooks1 @GondorGirl I had looked at them many times without picking them up. Never realized that they were set at the Biltmore. Visited the Biltmore Estate in Asheville this weekend!!

No surprises that my favorite room was the library. 😜 Also a good reminder that I need to read the 2nd and 3rd book in the Serafina series, which is set at the Biltmore. 📚 Maybe I will add the middle-grade mystery/paranormal series to my #screamathon #tbr.

I am floored at all of the interest in the #screamathon challenge, and so excited for it to begin!

Finished Serafina and the Black Cloak a couple nights ago. It was exactly what I wanted: mysterious, magical, dark but not really heavy. I've never really cared about Biltmore, where the book takes place, but it was such an enchanting backdrop for all the terror and action that I might need to make the short trip over there.

Yeah_I_Read Is this a pic of The Biltmore Estate? I loved this book and now I want to visit too 😊 2y

For some reason it takes me a while to get into every book I read. Every single one with the exception of maybe two or three. And then I'm like, "Is it you or is it me?" ? Anyway, starting to get really into this book.

jaimeisbionic @GondorGirl Really? I bet it's fun to listen to. 2y
GondorGirl @jaimeisbionic It took a bit to get used to... I wasn't expecting the narrator to be so... I guess southern is the best word for it. But now that I'm used to that the story is really good. 2y
jaimeisbionic @GondorGirl Southern accents, for me, are kind if hit or miss in terms of whether or not I can stick with a story. 🤷 Sometimes they're just too clownish, and then I wonder if they're fake? I'm glad you're able to enjoy the story now. 👍🏼 2y

Advice please! I've been searching various websites and lists, but none of them have made me feel confident about choosing a cozy mystery for my mom as a birthday present. I don't read them so I have no frame of reference and even within this one genre of book that my mom reads, she has specific interests: only warm/hot locations, no food themes, no romance. I have failed on multiple occasions to get her a good cozy. 😖 Any recs? #cozymystery

jaimeisbionic P.S. She has no interest in crafts or puzzles, but she *does* like dogs a lot and since I'm an artist she enjoys vaguely art-related characters. 2y

Low fantasy & perfect for the Harry Potter fans (but creepier). Middle school/older elementary (if approved) read. Heroine Seraphina on a quest through The Biltmore gives you American history context mixed with magic! First in a series, would be awesome for lit circles or a class project. Combine with searching about Asheville history for full context. REAL CLASSROOMS USE: http://robert-beatty.com/serafina-in-the-classroom-photos/ #UCFLAE3414su17
