Finished my January #doublespin selection. This is a solid Christie mystery. I read it for my Mystery, Murder, and Mayhem class, so I was playing extra special attention. And as you can see from the background, I had A LOT of thoughts and theories; some correct, some way off.

I like this one (narrated by Emilia Fox) quite a bit! I feel like Christie is pushing the envelope a little more with social conventions in this one, and I find it quite fun. Miss Marple is always a joy, though. She's one of those ladies who seems so prim and then says the most surprising things about murder and sex and relationships. The epilogue with the newspapers is completely beyond me, but aside from that, I was totally along for the ride.

I enjoyed this - good Christie mystery - I did not guess the ending (as usual) - a murder is announced in the paper- people attend thinking it is a murder mystery game but a real murder occurs - during the investigation more murders occur - Miss Marple comes in and helps solve the case.
@rwmg I believe I saw the same clue but discounted it as well - thought it was an editorial oversight 🤣
Make a great halloween weekend everyone 🎃

This is 1 of my favorite AC. I prefer Marple murders, and this is full of mistakes identity, lies, twists and turns. The characters are easy to tell apart and you know most are important. Also no one can tell me this wasn't a sapphic read. All these lady "roommates". Love it.

What appeared to be a practical joke takes a grim turn when the prankster kills himself by accident or on purpose. Was it actually an attempt to murder Letitia Blacklock?

I noticed a major clue but dismissed it because (see spoiler below)

LaraS Using a word like “vociferously“ in the very first sentence is quite a bold move lol 2y
rwmg @ShyBookOwl It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, 2y
rwmg we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. 2y

This was clever, twisty, everything a Christie should be, yet we didn‘t click.

The first third is without Mrs. Marple, and our victim is only introduced after he‘s hit the floor. No hook for me, but I pressed on. While I enjoyed exploring the lush, tangled, very British web woven around the crime, as well as the book‘s discussion of quality of life and will to live, these made the total carnage too distressing for me to enjoy the cheery epilogue!

It all starts when an ad is placed in a paper, saying a murder will take place at a local home. It was thought to be a joke, but things unravel when it actually happens as advertised. Plenty of twists in this Ms. Marple novel!

And I made it! My final stats for #StayHome24in48 #readathon is just over 25hrs, 3 books finished(2 crime novels, 1 GN) & 1 almost finished audiobook. Not as great as my normal times but I did battle a pretty bad headache in there as well. I also managed to knock off two more books for my #MarchUnshelfing #challenge & gave away a stack of books to my dad who is where I get my love of reading from but he doesn‘t have the library I‘m lucky to have♥️

I guessed some of the mystery but not much of it in this one. I usually just go along for the ride with Christie novels instead of trying to guess. There was some early suspicions and prejudice about “foreigners”, definitely still relevant today. There were several times that old ladies were called Pussy, which made me laugh. One certain line would be taken very differently now. 😂
This is a book over 200 pages for #scaryscavengerhunt @Clwojick

alisiakae That are definitely stereotypes and prejudices in some of Christie‘s books that have not aged well. Great review! 5y

I can't say why I enjoyed this one so much. I called nearly every twist & every secret identity. (I also called some twists & secret identities that failed to materialize, so maybe that's not so much impressive but good odds.) Still, with a fun premise & classically enjoyable Christie characters, the main downside was that there wasn't nearly enough Marple. But I still liked it, and would reread this one.

A short audio book that got me through my Christmas travels to Kentucky and back. Audio books with lots of characters can sometimes be difficult to follow, but this one was exceptionally well done! Emilia Fox, the narrator, varied her voice for each character which was delightfully entertaining. Also, this book was the closest I‘ve come to correctly guessing an Agatha Christie plot, so I‘m an official sleuth now.

🤔 #hoopla changed its audiobook player in the iPhone app, and... it‘s fine? You can swipe right and access your bookmarks, and swipe left to change a couple settings (speed and sleep timers). Apparently the skip forwards and backwards buttons are variable as well, depending on how much you‘re skipping. It looks prettier, but it still lacks the chapter markings I like on Libby. I‘m still undecided about whether this improves my user experience.
