The Mermaid
The Mermaid | Christina Henry
From the author of Lost Boy comes a historical fairy tale about a mermaid who leaves the sea for love and later finds herself in P.T. Barnum's American Museum as the real Fiji mermaid. However, leaving the museum may be harder than leaving the sea ever was. Once there was a mermaid who longed to know of more than her ocean home and her people. One day a fisherman trapped her in his net but couldn't bear to keep her. But his eyes were lonely and caught her more surely than the net, and so she evoked a magic that allowed her to walk upon the shore. The mermaid, Amelia, became his wife, and they lived on a cliff above the ocean for ever so many years, until one day the fisherman rowed out to sea and did not return. P. T. Barnum was looking for marvelous attractions for his American Museum, and he'd heard a rumor of a mermaid who lived on a cliff by the sea. He wanted to make his fortune, and an attraction like Amelia was just the ticket. Amelia agreed to play the mermaid for Barnum, and she believes she can leave any time she likes. But Barnum has never given up a money-making scheme in his life, and he's determined to hold on to his mermaid.

“The sea is not as mysterious as you think,” Amelia said. “You only have to swim under the surface.”

I found this to be a highly enjoyable read. I love books with coastal/ocean settings and sea based fairy tales and this one did not disappoint. Wonderful writing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really liked the 2 stories of a mermaid and P.T. Barnum meshed together. I was swept up in a wonderful fantasy of mermaids, performances, and romance ❤️ I felt so sad for Amelia during the hard times, but she stayed true to herself and did what was right. Great start to my Christina Henry obsession!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

I discovered this book last summer, while doing research related to Barnum and the Siren of the Fiji Islands, for another book I wanted to write. The plot immediately won me over and, as I read it, I realized that I became more and more passionate about its story. The story it is very exciting, and every time the reader goes on to the next chapter.

Highly recommended. A Must for all those who love mermaids.

This is my review for #theunreadshelfproject2019‘s August challenge of letting Bookstagram choose a book for me to read in August. The choices were The Mermaid or Conversations With Friends. Bookstagram made a good decision. I like books with Mermaids in them and I like retellings. The rule of the challenge for this month is to read the book Bookstagram chooses for you to read or you have to unhaul it. Now, I don‘t have to unhaul this book.

I actually finished this the other day and can't stop thinking about it. I enjoyed this book a lot and really love Christina Henry's style. The way she writes, there is a lesson in her words, for everyone and for her characters.
I hadn't expected many of the turns in this book. Feministic, while questioning the humanness of humanity. What makes a mermaid different than a human woman? Or a fish?

Painted this while listening to the audiobook.

An original telling of The Little Mermaid 3.5 ⭐ The Mermaid is set in late 19th Century; the time of travelling shows full of wonders. I enjoyed this story and the exploration of what it means to be human. How can someone who isn't human survive in a world more interested in exploitation & hatred than compassion & acceptance?
Imagining what the Mermaid looks like; mix or Ariel & HP Merpeople 🤔

#BookMail Pt2 I fell in love with the authors mashup of children‘s stories & horror when I read her version of Alice, which involves loonybins, serial killers, torture & lots & lots of blood. The follow up,Red Queen, was not as fantastic but still a creepy read & I also have her Lost Boy(Peter Pan of course) on my #MountTBR This one is a retelling of The Little Mermaid(duh🙄)& I cant wait to find out how she twists this one! #nosingingcrabsinthisone

LibrarianRyan @Lizpixie it‘s not bad. It‘s eye catching but doesn‘t match the rest of her book covers. And it‘s an odd size. It‘s at home but I will see if I can find a pic. 1y

I can‘t seem to get in to this book. I LOVED Lost Boy more than I could put into words... but this one is dragging. Anyone else have that issue? 😓

I think the best word for this book is "Pleasant". It wasn't overly exciting, there was not really any drama or anything that had me scrambling to read more, yet it was just a pleasant little read and easy to get through. Since Henry's 'Alice', I thought her stories would take on the same macabre nature, so a little disappointing to that effect but overall, good if you want a light and quick read.

A historical fiction story of P. T. Barnums mermaid told as if she were real and not the "humbug" it truly was. In her true to nature writing style Christina Henry's The Mermaid is an enthralling story that doesn't disappoint! This is the third original retelling I read of her's and throughly enjoyed!

3.5/5🧜🏻‍♂️🧜‍♀️. Amelia is caught by a fishermen‘s net. Jack decides to set this mermaid free and in turn Amelia falls in love with him. Unable to age, Jack one day disappears and she is left alone. Later she is approached to join P.T Barnums side show. I like the concept on this danish tale but I was not completely entranced.

The magic of the mermaid was really just a background to the struggle of woman fighting for her place in the world. The story was well written and brought up some interesting points about who is right and who is wrong when it comes to the treatment of people and animals. It was a quick and sub read even with the social commentary. #ARC #FirstToRead #2018christyread
