Corpi al sole | Agatha Christie
67 posts | 102 read | 39 to read

Hello to all of Litsy and my first post of 2024! I‘ve been on an Agatha Christie kick this year. What really amazes me is how well the books read to this day. They don‘t feel dated at all!

Of the Hercule Poirot books I have read, this one was one of the better ones! Maybe it‘s because it has people lounging on the beach, but the mystery is not bad either!

I aim to post more often this year!

Let‘s hear your favourite Hercule Poirot novels!

The_Book_Ninja Never read one. Maybe one day…. 8mo
Pruzy @The_Book_Ninja I was super hesitant, but was very pleasantly surprised once I started. No regrets! 8mo
The_Book_Ninja Can you jump in anywhere? 8mo
See All 26 Comments
Pruzy @The_Book_Ninja Easily! This is a series where reading order seems not to matter at all. (Except for maybe Curtain: Poirot‘s last case, which I haven‘t read yet.) 8mo
Librarybelle Welcome back! 8mo
Pruzy @Librarybelle Thank you! And if you actually remember me, I‘m truly so so honoured 😊 8mo
Librarybelle @Pruzy Of course! It‘s always good to see returning Littens! 8mo
Pruzy @Librarybelle Aw, you‘ve made my day! 8mo
Ruthiella Welcome back! I‘m a huge Christie fan. Evil Under the Sun is definitely a favorite. Also check out the adaptations starring David Suchet. They somewhat modify the plot from time to time but are otherwise quite faithful. 8mo
Addison_Reads I just really started reading Christie last year. I'm reading through the Miss Marple series right now. I'm currently on book 5. 8mo
Pruzy @Ruthiella I also really liked The Mystery of the Blue Train. The opening sequence was action packed! 8mo
Pruzy @Addison_Reads I have a Marple book waiting for me on my shelf, A Pocket Full of Rye 8mo
BookmarkTavern Murder on the Orient Express! Or maybe Death on the Nile or Evil Under the Sun! (edited) 8mo
kezzlou85 I've been on an Agatha Kick myself recently. My mum collected all the books so enjoying having a re read of them. 8mo
Pruzy @kezzlou85 That sounds really fun! (and convenient 😆) 8mo
kezzlou85 @Pruzy it's very handy, they're some old editions. Including the original title for And then there were none. 8mo
Pruzy @kezzlou85 😬 can‘t read that one in public 8mo
kezzlou85 @Pruzy definitely not. Might have to look for another edition for outside reading. 8mo
Pruzy @kezzlou85 I‘ve always wanted to try the method of wrapping a book cover in brown packing paper to hide what I‘m reading 😆 8mo
kezzlou85 @Pruzy ooh that sounds fun. I saw someone who'd done that on the bus once. It gets you really intrigued as to what they might be reading. 8mo
Pruzy @kezzlou85 What could they have been reading?!?!! I need to know 8mo
kezzlou85 @Pruzy I know I was the same. I never did find out sadly 😥 8mo
Pruzy @kezzlou85 What are the rules about asking people what they are reading in public places 🤔 8mo
kezzlou85 @Pruzy I'm not sure. I've chatted to people before but that was when they'd put the book down. I think maybe rude to interrupt their reading I guess. 8mo
AlaMich It was a fun movie too. 8mo

I absolutely loved this classic mystery. Sophie Hannah recommended it as (one of) her favourite Christie books and I can see why. It has all the elements: Poirot, seaside resort, characters with intrigue and a murder where everyone has a motive. And Christie‘s wit and light touch. The solution is pretty tricky (almost too much) but a fun read, masterfully done.

IndoorDame Love the classic cover art! 10mo
batsy One of my favourite Christies. Love the Fontana covers! 10mo

This review goes all the way back to October 🤦🏻‍♀️

This was a low pick for me—a fun Poirot mystery, but not my favorite. There are some great characters, some classic Poirot moments, but a couple of far-fetched red herrings that annoyed me! One more for #SeriesLove2023 😊

Ruthiella I love this one, but maybe mostly because I loved the 1982 film with Jane Birken. It‘s not 100% true to the book, but I love the reveal, when you know who comes down the staircase, utterly transformed. (edited) 12mo
BarbaraJean @Ruthiella They never are 100% true to the book, are they?! I've been wanting to watch that version because of Maggie Smith and Diana Rigg! I'll have to track it down. 12mo
Andrew65 Excellent, some of my reviews that are overdue go back further than that. 🤷‍♂️ 12mo
TheSpineView I always seem to be behind. ❤️📖📚 12mo

So, I went through another easy read / listening. I really like the Hercule Poirot stories because he is always made fun of by the characters who then realize he is not be riduculed. And I never know who did the murder.
Fun fact: The British island this story takes place on, is on sale right now. I saw it in the news a few days ago.

Ruthiella The entire island is for sale? Wow! 2y

I brought this on vacation with me at the beginning of March, but my husband stole it to read on the plane. So I didn‘t get to it until this week. It‘s been a while since I‘ve read a Christie book in print and not the audio!

Poirot is on vacation and there is a murder! So Poirot takes a break from his holiday to investigate. A good mystery that I didn‘t see coming!

CSeydel I loved this one! I really enjoy the way she infuses her plots with social commentary. 2y

So many likely suspects in this one! I love some of Christie's self-referential touches, and the way she describes the teenage psyche makes me chuckle.

ShyBookOwl I went through a Christie phase in middle school but haven't revised her since. Nor do I remember much. I wonder if her books would hold up for me. I do love a whodunit ! 2y
Suet624 That photo makes me want to leave my current location and run to yours. 2y
ImperfectCJ @Suet624 Well, I took that during our series of "atmospheric rivers" when the surf was high (there's usually a lot more beach than that), temps were low, and bluffs were collapsing, but it's definitely a pretty spot, and especially nice without all of the context. :-) 2y
See All 9 Comments
ImperfectCJ @ShyBookOwl I have a middle school student who's a huge Christie fan and he has a much better memory for the plots than I do. I pretty much read them and then immediately forget them, but I enjoy reading them while I'm doing it, and I really like seeing Christie's evolution and how early mysteries influence the ones coming out now. 2y
Suet624 😂😂 any ocean is my favorite spot and currently I‘m experiencing -10F, high winds, -17 tonight, and a ton of snow. I love Vermont but it has its moments. 2y
ImperfectCJ @Suet624 We moved here from Massachusetts, and I must admit, this "cool" is much less intense than New England winter! You all just had a big temperature shift didn't you? My friend in MA was saying it went from 50s to negative teens in just a few days. Ugh! 2y
Suet624 Our shift in temp was more mid-20‘s to this. Like they always say, it‘s the wind that makes everything so much colder. 2y
5feet.of.fury @ImperfectCJ MA here 🙋🏻‍♀️ 50 a couple days ago & we are having -17 tomorrow and 45 Sunday. It is very chaotic. 2y
ImperfectCJ @5feet.of.fury Oh, man! Those are some big shifts! We've had about a 30-degree difference between daytime and overnight temperatures, but day-to-day it doesn't usually change that fast. That's the kind of chaotic weather I associate with spring in the Midwest. Looks like MA doesn't want to be left out! 2y

When asked by Mrs. Gardner about his detecting methods, Poirot, observing she was working on a puzzle, used that as an analogy. Quite ingenious of him!
I really enjoyed this! The story was told through conversations with the police, vacationers, staff of the Jolly Roger Hotel.Although set on an idyllic island, a sense of evil permeated the air. Then the murder of an actress, thought of as a Jezebel, destroyed peoples bucolic visit.⬇️

kspenmoll Bringing evil into the open.Poirot went into his style of “ action” & asisted the police. His catalog of observations, intent listening & focus, solved the murder. Whodunit surprised me! (edited) 3y
Ruthiella One of my favorites! The murderer had everyone, including me, fooled! 3y

Instead of reading my book for irl book club yesterday, I read another Poirot mystery. The last few have been set in various countries while Poirot is vacationing. This one is off the coast of England at a resort hotel. Poirot just can‘t go anywhere without someone being murdered. Really enjoyed this one, several suspects, an interesting setting, solid mystery.

Classic Poirot story of a woman whose body is found on a beach on an island only hotel guests had access to. She was strangled but by who?

At least I managed to solve one of the minor mysteries, even if not the main one.

In Devon, Agatha Christie‘s home county, among the scantily clad sunbathers, a murdered woman is found.

It was not unusual to find the beautiful bronzed body of the sun-loving Arlena Stuart stretched out on a beach, face down. Only, on this occasion, there was no sun… she had been strangled. Poirot chases murder mysteries no matter where he travels...this was fun!

I‘ve been working through Agatha Christie‘s books the past few years, and thought I‘d fit in the next Poirot mystery during #ProgressItNovember.

This is classic Christie and David Suchet does a great job with the narration (though Hugh Fraser is my favourite Christie narrator).

This is also book 2 finished for #NovelNovember. @Andrew65

This was a book I stayed up til 2 AM to finish! A nice change from the last Christie I read. In this Poirot mystery, the alluring wife of a Captain is killed on vacation. Blame can be placed on the whole cast of characters: the husband, the step daughter, a lover, a lover‘s jealous wife, and even a zealot preacher who hates ‘scarlet women.‘ It‘s up to Poirot to put the pieces together. This is probably one of my favorites now!

This genre isn't called Cozy for nothing - it's so great to just lean back and forget about the outside world, while Poirot does his magic. Now that I've also read The Art Of War I think that he is, even though not a soldier, still acting accordingly. People keep on underestimating him. And at the end he goes BOOM - he's so great! 😄

Okay so I know it‘s a mystery book, but I wasn‘t expecting that twist. Agatha Christie you did it again! Also, loved how Agatha gave a different perspective on the murder victim. Arlena was hated by most everyone because she loved men but was married so that‘s not good. Agatha added another dimension by shedding light that Arlena was a victim of her own weakness because men used her more than she used them. #mystery #twist
