A Miss Marple mystery. I haven‘t read a lot of this series but I feel like Miss Marple doesn‘t show up a lot in the book. Most of it is the mystery unfolding and then Miss Marple finally shows up. This one definitely surprised me!

Delightfully twisty as always. I liked how much Marple was involved this time 'round, she didn't just pop in at the end, as has happened occasionally before. I'll admit that I would have had a better time if the number of characters whose primary descriptors could be 'flaky, irritating' was reduced, but there were a number of points where such flighty tendencies were useful for plot purposes. 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? Did not care for the level of xenophobia, there\'s a point at which \'foreign\' being the primary way to describe someone makes it clear where the prejudices lay. Mitzi may have been characterized as a pill, but overall the lack of sympathy and the automatic suspicion shown to a refugee is nauseating. 2mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? Also not fond of the way things landed for Philippa and Edmund - sure she was hiding a not-dead husband, but nobody took seriously her claims as a seeming widow with a young son that she wouldn\\\'t marry again, including her suitor, who in one scene evidenced stalker/work place harrassment behavior. Bleah. (edited) 2mo
Robotswithpersonality 4/4 If anyone\'s got modern comps for Christie - NOT thrillers, straight mysteries, cleverly plotted and more open minded, I\'d appreciate them.

I\'ll keep Miss Marple, but there are a number of things about her time I would happily ditch.

โš ๏ธxenophobia, bigotry, ableism
2mo
willaful Yeah, she can be hard to read today. Though Sayers is even worse. ๐Ÿ˜Ÿ Still really enjoy this one. 2mo

My #doublespin this month was so much fun! It‘s rare I find an Agatha Christie I don‘t enjoy, but that also makes it rare for one of her‘s to be especially standout. I can‘t say exactly what it is that makes this one join the ranks of my favorite Christie‘s any more than I could have solved the mystery ahead of Miss Marple, but it‘s definitely something I‘ll keep pondering. @TheAromaofBooks

Finally starting to get a little strength back after several crazy draining weeks causing a major flare. But I‘m still trying to spend most of my time in bed so I don‘t overdo it and end up right back where I started. Luckily kitty and Miss Marple are helping me out. This is one of the most all consuming stories I‘ve picked up in months! Just read 100 pages straight through without even noticing!

batsy I really like this Christie. Both the Joan Hickson and Geraldine McEwan adaptations are really fun, too. 6mo

Finished my January #doublespin selection. This is a solid Christie mystery. I read it for my Mystery, Murder, and Mayhem class, so I was playing extra special attention. And as you can see from the background, I had A LOT of thoughts and theories; some correct, some way off.

I like this one (narrated by Emilia Fox) quite a bit! I feel like Christie is pushing the envelope a little more with social conventions in this one, and I find it quite fun. Miss Marple is always a joy, though. She's one of those ladies who seems so prim and then says the most surprising things about murder and sex and relationships. The epilogue with the newspapers is completely beyond me, but aside from that, I was totally along for the ride.

I enjoyed this - good Christie mystery - I did not guess the ending (as usual) - a murder is announced in the paper- people attend thinking it is a murder mystery game but a real murder occurs - during the investigation more murders occur - Miss Marple comes in and helps solve the case.
@rwmg I believe I saw the same clue but discounted it as well - thought it was an editorial oversight ๐Ÿคฃ

This was clever, twisty, everything a Christie should be, yet we didn‘t click.

The first third is without Mrs. Marple, and our victim is only introduced after he‘s hit the floor. No hook for me, but I pressed on. While I enjoyed exploring the lush, tangled, very British web woven around the crime, as well as the book‘s discussion of quality of life and will to live, these made the total carnage too distressing for me to enjoy the cheery epilogue!

It all starts when an ad is placed in a paper, saying a murder will take place at a local home. It was thought to be a joke, but things unravel when it actually happens as advertised. Plenty of twists in this Ms. Marple novel!

I guessed some of the mystery but not much of it in this one. I usually just go along for the ride with Christie novels instead of trying to guess. There was some early suspicions and prejudice about โ€œforeignersโ€, definitely still relevant today. There were several times that old ladies were called Pussy, which made me laugh. One certain line would be taken very differently now. ๐Ÿ˜‚
This is a book over 200 pages for #scaryscavengerhunt @Clwojick

I can't say why I enjoyed this one so much. I called nearly every twist & every secret identity. (I also called some twists & secret identities that failed to materialize, so maybe that's not so much impressive but good odds.) Still, with a fun premise & classically enjoyable Christie characters, the main downside was that there wasn't nearly enough Marple. But I still liked it, and would reread this one.
