Bridget Jones meets The Exorcist in this wickedly funny, dark novel about one woman's post-cancer retreat to a remote Australian town and the horrors awaiting herIt wasn't just the bad breakup that turned Eleanor Mellett's life upside down. It was the cancer. And all the demons that came with it.One day she felt a bit of a bump when she was scratching her armpit at work. The next thing she knew, her breast was being dissected and removed by an inappropriately attractive doctor, and she was suddenly deluged with cupcakes, judgy support groups, and her mum knitting sweaters.Luckily, Eleanor discovers Talbingo, a remote little town looking for a primary-school teacher. Their Miss Barker up and vanished in the night, despite being the most caring teacher ever, according to everyone. Unfortunately, Talbingo is a bit creepy. It's not just the communion-wine-guzzling friar prone to mad rants about how cancer is caused by demons. Or the unstable, overly sensitive kids, always going on about Miss Barker and her amazing sticker system. It's living alone in a remote cabin, with no cell or Internet service, wondering why there are so many locks on the front door and who is knocking on it late at night.Riotously funny, deeply unsettling, and surprisingly poignant, Shirley Barrett's The Bus on Thursday is a wickedly weird, wild ride for fans of Helen Fielding, Maria Semple, and Stephen King.

What in the absolute fuck did I just read? Seriously...I have no words. None.

I'm not sure if this is humour or horror but it's a whole lot of cringey mind-fuck wrapped in a messy "wait....what...seriously?" candy coating. I have no idea if I liked it because I have no idea what just went on. @BookishTrish Did you read this? I'm so confused ??

Very bizarre with a wholly unlikable protagonist. Some plot lines fell flat and the horror was just not there for me. Finished it wanting more from it, but it did have it's funny moments. Would be willing to read more from this author.

readordierachel This was a so-so for me too 4y
night_shift @readordierachel yeah, it was a really weird one. I listened to it and from other reviews, I figure that was a good choice because with the all caps sections and such, probably would've annoyed me! 4y
readordierachel Yes, I found that very annoying 😂 4y
night_shift @readordierachel I mean, it was funny in the audiobook as it was just the narrator shrieking, freaked out. She was pretty good lol 4y

Yeah. WTF was that??🤔 It started off promising, a very aussie sarcastic humour, then it just veered hard left into batshit territory. Creepy, making me very uncomfortable batshit territory. With dashes of child abuse & skeezyness. Don‘t bother with this one, it‘s the very first Pan I‘ve given I think & it‘s well deserved. #dontbother #ineedashowernow

Next up is this new novel by Shirley Barrett. Described as The Exorcist meets Twin Peaks in a tiny Australian town, it definitely sounds interesting. Eleanor is a 31yr old teacher when she finds a lump in her breast. After chemo & a mastectomy, she‘s had enough of her unsympathetic friends & lack of prospects so she takes a job out in the middle of nowhere. But where did the old teacher vanish to & why is there a bus outside her house at midnight?

After a bad breakup, cancer diagnosis, and a mastectomy, Eleanor accepts a teacher position in a remote town. Her predecessor has disappeared and was perfect according to the residents, which is a hard act to follow. This is a weird, funny, weird book. Eleanor is a hot mess. It‘s uncertain as you read her unpublished blog, if things are real or in her imagination. This definitely leans more toward Bridget Jones‘ Diary than The Exorcist even ⬇️

Bookzombie with the strangeness and horrific parts. I remembered about half-way through that I wasn‘t a big fan of BJD (book, not movie) and I struggled with this one a bit too. After finishing and pondering it, I decided I really liked it. I‘m still not sure what to think about the ending though. If you have read it, what do you think (please use spoiler tag)? #screamathon 5y
CarolynM I found this one funny to begin with but it made me increasingly uncomfortable as it went on. I've heard it suggested that the cancer had spread to her brain and was causing delusions, hence all the weird goings on. That kind of makes sense and if so, maybe the end is the pressure on her brain becoming too much and shutting down. But maybe not too, maybe she just crashed her car into a bus. 5y
Reggie I have no idea what happened either but what about that vacuum cleaner demonstration? Lol 5y
See All 11 Comments
Bookzombie @CarolynM I have been pondering and I keep leaning towards the theory that the cancer spread and everything is a delusion. There were certain things that made me uncomfortable too. 5y
Bookzombie @Reggie It was creepy! I wish I hadn‘t returned this to library. I find myself wanting to go back a reread certain bits. 5y
vivastory I'm definitely intrigued! I know that @readordierachel had a similar experience with this one 5y
readordierachel @vivastory I did! I'm with you @Bookzombie in that I was dismayed that it was more BJD than horror. The ending tho 👇🏼 5y
readordierachel The cancer spreading to the brain thing makes sense, but I find that explanation so unsatisfying! I really want to believe that one dude was a weird demon, she was possessed, and then being, like, taken to hell on that bus at the end. 5y
Bookzombie @readordierachel I understand. If it‘s the cancer spreading, it‘s something real causing her to hallucinate or whatever. I think I would have liked what you said or that the guy was a demon or Satan trying to have a baby with a human better. I also expected her to have more interactions with other strange people in the town. Basically, I probably wanted more horror. Lol. 5y
Bookzombie @readordierachel I just realized that what I wanted is sort of Rosemary‘s baby. Lol. 5y
readordierachel Yes, exactly! That would have been awesome. Haha. 5y

This is a very weird, funny, bizarre horror novel with a very unlikable main character whom I half liked anyways because I adored the narrator. Eleanor takes over teaching at a remote school with only 11 students after the former teacher disappears. Eleanor hasn't worked in 3 years as she's been battling breast cancer, a brutal break up, so she sees this as a chance to start over. Things do not go as planned. #TeamSlaughter #scarathalon @Clwojick

A woman whose life has been turned upside down takes a teaching job in a weird, isolated Australian town. A lot of shit happens, some of it unsettling, some of it confusing, some of it funny. I think Barrett was clever in the way she revealed things (or didn't), but the payoff was unsatisfying and I was put off by the informal tone of the narrator. Lots of "So, anyway..." and YELLING CAPS TO CONVEY BIG FEELINGS. Not really my flavor but ⭐⭐⭐

Addison_Reads @readordierachel Great review! I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt that way about the ending. I am curious though to read future books by this author. There was something in her writing style that I really liked, but the story just went too off the rails for me in the end. 5y
CarolynM I agree about the ending, and I found some of it quite upsetting, but I also thought it was very entertaining. 5y

Reggie I loved how untrustworthy she was. Lol, how her exbf maybe wasn‘t a horrible person after all. Yeah that ending.... where does the bus go?!!! 5y
readordierachel @Reggie Haha, yes I liked that reveal as well. How Barrett kept revealing how unhinged she really was. But omg, that damn bus! I'm wondering now if she was dead? And that's, like, the bus to hell or something? 5y

Book 9 finished for #screamathon @4thhouseontheleft

First off, I'm not sure why this is listed in the horror genre. It started out interesting and even though the main character was unpredictable and neurotic, I was enjoying it. Then she moves to a small town where the last school teacher mysteriously disappeared, and this story starts falling apart. Sadly, the ending didn't help and just left me frustrated.

The first part of the book was good, but it all went downhill for me when the MC got the new job in a remote mountain town. I did not find it funny at all, nor scary - it was just too bizarre! This started out funny and sarcastic, but then... I'm not really sure what happened. I feel like this book may have gaslighted me. I'm not sure what to think.

My strongest impression though was one of frustration, because there's no way a male character would have been written as Eleanor was.

It was a quick and compelling read - I finished it in a day.

#lmpbc #groupx #theaussies
@CarolynM @thegreensofa @LapReader @BecH

CarolynM I think I would have found this even more disquieting if the protagonist had been male. But a lot of what happened was because she was female - there was some serious toxic masculinity on display from other characters. 6y
Sarz @CarolynM I think it's because of her gender that we're left questioning what happened. Because her crazy behaviour is potentially believable. If it was a male, there'd be no question - we'd assume brain cancer. 6y
CarolynM @Sarz But if she'd been male the other characters would have behaved differently toward her so her behaviour in response would have been different. I can't imagine a man being harassed the way she was. (edited) 6y

This opens strongly with observations about cancer treatment that had me laughing out loud. The narrator has a cynical, biting sense of humour that I found refreshing & v funny in parts - like a good friend telling you a story, no holds barred. But she becomes unlikeable (a bad teacher, violent & irrational) & the story overblown, so I stopped caring. It‘s been compared to Twin Peaks or Fargo but too farcical. Lively writing & voice; so-so story.

Cinfhen I think I‘m gonna pass - I don‘t do well with cynicism 6y
CarolynM I agree that it gets harder and harder to laugh as the book goes on. I started off sympathising with her but became increasingly uncomfortable with her behaviour. I liked it overall, though🙂 6y

They say it‘s Bridget Jones meets the Exorcist but I think it leans more on Bridget. We meet Eleanor and the most horrific thing that happens is that she gets breast cancer within the first 20pgs. and loses a breast, her job, and this all after she lost her bf. She moves to the middle of nowhere to teach at a small school. And you root for her up until you realize she might not be the most reliable narrator. But she still makes you laugh. This👇🏼

Billed as “Bridget Jones meets The Exorcist” teacher Eleanor, finished treatment for breast cancer moves to a remote town in the Australian outback. The paranormal, freaks and a severed hand come to life, are just some of the fun campy moments in this novel.

“This is the problem with having cancer: Everyone expects you to have mysteriously acquired some kind of wisdom out of the experience, and if you haven‘t, then it‘s a personal failing.”

Lel2403 Love that...it‘s true . You‘d be surprised how many people expect you to go out and ‘enjoy‘ your life, when you‘ve been diagnosed.....jeez I don‘t have time due to all the medical appointments ❤️❤️ 6y
Pricel101 The appointments, scans, treatments, anxiety, no one really knows. Thanks for your kind comment ❤️❤️ 6y

A cancer survivor takes a job in a remote Australian village as a schoolteacher after her predecessor mysteriously disappears. The narrator is probably a sociopath and everyone else in the story is totally unpleasant, which made the whole thing sort of funny. There were parts so cringeworthy you couldn‘t help but nervously laugh to yourself, or mumble “Jesus fucking Christ...” under your breath. I really enjoyed it, so 4 out of 5 stars from me.

DebinHawaii Sounds very intriguing! Stacking it. 📚 6y

Oh. My. Gursh. This turned out to be NOTHING like I thought it would in the best way possible. First I thought it was like Christopher Moore wrote Wicker Man, and then it took some reeeaally dark turns. This is a weird mystery with a “hot mess” protagonist, and would be great for a book club as there‘s a lot to discuss about mental illness, cancer, life as a 30-something, coercive control, and a what just happened?-style debatable ending. 5 ⭐️s
