The first in the Gaslight Mystery series (#SeriesLove2024) featuring midwife Sarah Bryant and police detective Frank Malloy. Set in the gaslight era, Thompson did a great job evoking the era, it was a great first in the series. I look forward to reading more.

I liked this book but more because of the characters than because of the mystery. Sarah is a midwife who used to belong to one of the high society New York families, and Frank is a cop who may or may not be corrupt. The mystery was interesting enough, but I guessed every single twist (and there were quite a few). It would‘ve been nice if at least one was a surprise, but nope. Still, I would read another in this series. #audiowalk

I‘ve decided to stick with Murder on Astor Place as my #audiowalk book for now. It was hot outside today but was so cloudy that it was bearable.

I really couldn‘t concentrate on a walking book today. I wanted something light but didn‘t really have anything light, so I ended up switching between Rhiannon Gidden‘s fabulous Freedom Highway album, Possession, and Murder on Astor Place. #audiowalk

I liked this enough to move on to Book 2. It's a little pedestrian in some aspects, but the main characters' mutual antagonism creates chemistry. I also enjoyed the research and sense of place. I do think that 90s sensibilities show up in the book with the killer's reveal. The author treats the murderer in a way that would not stand up to today's standards, but I do make allowances for when a book is written. Times change!

This is classified as a historical mystery and it does fit that categorization, but it is also a semi cozy mystery. The crimes are deadly and the reasons behind them are shocking (for the time), but the main detective is an outcast from “society”, so it feels cozyesque, if that makes sense. It is a quick read and I did enjoy it, although this is not my usual genre. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My NYC listen for my NYC trip. Listened off and on on the drive there and back. Your fairly typical whodunnit. Pretty quick read. This was between a pick and a so so for me. The narrator didn‘t help as her reading was very choppy. There‘s a whole series set in New York and I was hoping it would change narrators. Just started the second and same narrator. Don‘t know I‘ll make my way through all of them with her narrating.

Book 213/265 7/12/19

Crazeedi I love this series!!! 5y
Crazeedi The author is a professor at Seton Hall, a small college in Greensburg PA which is a city not that far from me 5y

This hit all the right notes - except that for me, personally, it was very disturbing. Great characters. I could practically hear the swish of skirts and the clop of hooves on the New York City streets. I just couldn't get past the denouement and reveal of the motives behind the murders. Read with caution.

This is a wonderful introduction to the Gaslight Mystery Series. This book gives a good feel for early 20th Century New York & the corruption that appears to be present in the Police Force, if you had money and status it appears you could literally get away with murder. This book is very well written & love the main characters. Totally recommend this to anyone who loves a good mystery or historical mysteries. Look forward to continuing the series.

Mehso-so

This was a re-read for the @bookriot #ReadHarder challenge. I remember really liking this cozy mystery the first time I read it, but this time it was just so-so for me. Possibly I remembered too much from the original read to make it interesting? In any case, it does have a strong and interesting female character and it's the first in a long series, so if you like cozy historical mysteries I'd say give it a try.

I almost bailed on this one, but I always think things will get better. I could not connect with anything about this book...the characters, the story. And the ending was far-fetched and very unsettling. Based on this start, I think I will give this series a pass. #romantsy #osrbc

In the last 48 hours I've read Murder on Astor Place and Murder on St. Mark's Place. This is a mystery series set in NYC 1896. The main character Sarah Brandt is from a rich family, had married a doctor who was murdered and is now a midwife and estranged from her family. Our hero is Irish detective Frank Malloy. Through various circumstances they are thrown together to solve a murder. As expected the relationship grows in the 2nd book. On to #3.

The first in a long series featuring an amateur female sleuth in the form of a midwife and a surly detective. A lovely cozy set in Victorian New York, each book tends to take you into a new neighborhood so the reader gets a different slice of Victorian life from many different viewpoints.
