Le Morte d'Arthur tells the story of King Arthur and his Knights at the Round Table. Arthur, who is son of King Uther Pendragon but was raised by another family, takes his rightful place as king when, as a boy, he is able to pull the sword called Excalibur from the stone.

#funfriyay @HappilyEverKrafter

It's a hard choice because there are solo many good ones out there! I'd probably have to go with either Guinevere & Lancelot or Isolde & Tristan from King Arthur legends! They were the first ones I ever fell in love with way back in my high school days, and set me in a course for loving star crossed lover pairings ever since! ❤📖❤

kspenmoll Great choices!!! 3y
DaveGreen7777 Can‘t believe you didn‘t go with Lews Therin and Lanfear! 😁 3y
GingerAntics Mine is probably Gareth and Gwen (from Sarah Woodbury‘s Mediaeval Mysteries series) or Bay and Manda from Wolf Tales… and now I‘m thinking of every other couple I could pic. 3y
See All 6 Comments
HappilyEverKrafter I love those choices! 3y
Branwen @HappilyEverKrafter @kspenmoll Thank you! 😁 @GingerAntics It was hard to narrow it down, right? What is Wolf Tales? I feel like I would love it! ❤🐺 @DaveGreen7777 OMG YOU'RE RIGHT! 😲 How could I have forgotten about fantasy's most screwed up couple?! 🤣😂 3y
GingerAntics @Branwen it‘s about shapeshifters. I guess it would be considered romance, but it‘s definitely for adults. I got carded the first time I bought them. 3y

My mystery bag from Horizon books showed up! I put Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Historical Murder Mystery as favorite genres and I‘m excited with what they came up with for me! My jaw dropped when I saw this copy of Le Morte D‘Arthur, I have been wanting a copy for so long and not only is it thick, it‘s illustrated! The rest I haven‘t heard of but am looking forward to getting to them all. As if I didn‘t have enough on my TBR pile 😅

reading_rainbow wow!! i‘m so excited to get mine hopefully this week!! 5y
RainyDayReading @reading_rainbow I hope yours comes in soon!! Fingers crossed you get some good stuff! I scared my boyfriend when I got it because I opened the front door and there it was on the porch! Apparently my excited noises, to him, sound like I‘m in distress 🤣 5y

A bit of a slog in parts, as there are many side adventures. But the story as a whole is epic and the basis for many modern references and subsequent works. The end is sufficiently epic to make it all worth it. Perhaps the archaic language is the best part!

Finished this finally. It was okay. King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table from Arthur's birth until death. Many knight quests.

BookDragonNotWorm Ugh, I remember trudging through that one. Broke me for anything other than modern fiction. 😂 5y
MonicaLoves2Read @BookDragonNotWorm I won it from Goodreads. It was ok but not something I usually read. In fact, I didn't even remember entering for that book🤔 5y

Okay. The only time Arthur is interesting in this work is in the chapter on his death, BUT wowzers is this the best or what!? Beautiful language! This works gives us The Holy Grail (not just the grail but the Holy Grail!), Sir Galahad, and King Arthur becomes a mythic figure. Definitely worth the read. I have the Oxford World Classics edition with more modern spelling. Go for that. 😊

We went to see The Kid Who Would Be King tonight & while I‘m not a fan of the sexist revision of the sexist original, it was fun, with echoes of many things that happen in Lord of the Rings, Sabriel, and other fantasy/YA books (I definitely had Dark is Rising feels too). Not great, but pretty good.

I'm terrible at keeping up with Instagram challenges, but who am I to turn down the opportunity to take photos of my King Arthur dagger? I love Arthurian legends and really want to read more. I've got a few collections and adaptations in my bookcase that I need to read. What about you?

As a newly single parent about 13 yrs ago, I had to downsize my library of about 1000 books down to 300 ish to fit us into our new townhouse. One of the books I got rid of that I always regretted was a beautiful edition of Le Morte d'Arthur. This version is very close, with the same beautiful scripting and illustrations. I'm so happy to have a copy of it in my house again.

Cinfhen So glad you were able to find the book 💕#zeroregrets 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Yes. Some books have a way of haunting us once out of our possession. Glad you found another copy. 8y
Nonaroo I'm glad you found such a beautiful copy. I read this last year for a wonderful class on Arthurian legend. It was probably one of my favorite classes and the professor was fantastic. 8y

For today's #octphotochallenge I'm picking King Arthur for my classic character. Not just for Le Morte, but also for all of the variations and stories he's inspired. So much classic fantasy revolves around Arthur, and Merlin, and Lancelot and Guinevere. I think that's really what makes classic characters....classic. Staying power and possibilities.

I've been reading The Queen's Gambit (Tudor Trilogy #1) by Elizabeth Fremantle and in it Katherine Parr's stepdaughter is reading this to her maid, whom she is good friends with following a traumatic experience. And here it is as "recently added" on to the Serial Reader App on iPhone. I think the universe is telling me to read it, what do you think?

If you're looking for knightly adventures for the next 118 days, try Le Morte D'Arthur - it's the version of King Arthur and Co.'s adventures that's been most influential on modern retellings, from The Once and Future King to that Merlin TV miniseries with Sam Neill (anyone remember that?).

Though collectively long, each issue is a snap to read. Highly recommended if you haven't read Arthurian legend for yourself yet!

readinginthedark I remember! 8y
