I didn‘t know what to expect when I picked up #TheTrees by #AliShaw , but it certainly isn‘t what I expected😏 A dash of #postapocalypse mixed with #herosjourney splashed with #philosophy . Or something like that. It‘s a really hard book to describe in short terms, so just read it😋

A beautiful absorbing read. Another reviewer mentioned Walden meets the apocalypse, and if you mix in magical realism, then that‘s about right. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Halloween TBR 🎃👻☠️ After finishing the Elementals by Michael McDowel I had to order Blackwater which is Uuuuge but only because it's the whole collection. Looking forward to digging in to that one. Love the cover. @suvata gave me Gothic Tales which have dug into and love so far. The Trees has been waiting to be read for a year (#boughtitforthecover ). But I have started it and the premise is interesting so far 🌲🌲🌲

Well this is a conundrum!
Item 1: a credulity-stretching premise (a mature forest bursts up from the ground all over Britain, and probably the world, in minutes).
Item 2: initially irritating characters
Item 3: clunky prose and creaking dialogue
And yet... I liked it. (I appear to be going through an "anti-hero in a post-apocalyptic forest" phase.)
I'd suggest resisting the gorgeous cover and reading a chapter or two before buying. ⭐⭐⭐

It's taking me an age to finish this book. Started it months ago. Tempted to bail, is it worth seeing through?

🦊 🦊 This book was unbelievably meh. It was definitely a case of a story not living up to its cover. I thought it would be scary but was severely disappointed.

A fully formed mature forest springs up all over the world in a matter of seconds. And who who couldn't adore that cover?!?!

I wanted to like this book - actually I would've settled for reading it with even a little enjoyment! I just couldn't get into it, and I've found myself doing anything I can to avoid reading it (I even vacuumed today 😱). So I'm going to step away. I'm disappointed, because I really liked the cover. So much for judging a book by its cover....

A really interesting storyline and concept, but I found it a little slow in places. The end really picked up pace and hit home though and living in the countryside myself added something to the reading experience.

This has been on my TBR for awhile and despite its intimidating size and my ever present reading slump I'm going to give it a go!

The thing is this book was a good book. I just didn't love it. I really wanted to but I didn't. I loved the idea of it. The atmosphere and the setting was amazing. The trees taking over was fabulous but I didn't really love any of the characters in the book (except the fox🦊!) It was just too slow in places and the end was too predictable for me.

How does that old saying go, something about not judging a book by its cover? I forget the exact wording – ha ha – but it's definitely true here. A laughably inane premise, unbelievably irritating characters, and limp prose. Bailed less than 10% of the way in.

I pretty much hated a horror novel that so many others loved last year; I was shy to begin this one, and who knows how I will ultimately feel about it. I even held off adding it to my current reads list until after I read the first two chapters tonight, but for now I am hooked! Who knew trees could be so terrifying?

What a gorgeous book. Literally and figuratively. Post apocalyptic world where the trees reclaim the soil and a man (and women and children) relearn their place in the ecosystem.

Fairy tale like story where a dark spooky forest erupts all over the world within minutes and destroys everything. Those that survived the Trees coming have to try to figure out how to live with them. Character growth, relationships, and a friendly fox. Plus some mysticism thrown in.

Just about to finish this - it was a bit slow in places but ultimately very good.

'The Trees' was a interesting read and not what I expected, I was pleasantly surprised by the story. The strongest character for me was Hannah, at times her enthusiasm can be annoying, however, her strength of character shines through. Adrien, the other protagonist changes for the better, he was relatable, you understood him. The cover of the book is fantastic to look at. Recommended.

This just came off of my holds! Finished up A Gentleman in Moscow last night, so I can move right on to this one. Seems like an interesting read for the Thanksgiving holiday....
