Mama Day
Mama Day | Gloria Naylor
On the island of Willow Springs, off the Georgia coast, the powers of healer Mama Day are tested by her great niece, Cocoa, a stubbornly emancipated woman endangered by the island's darker forces. A powerful generational saga at once tender and suspenseful, overflowing with magic and common sense.

Told from 3 povs, we hear from Mama Day, a fierce matriarch, and star crossed lovers, Cocoa and George. This book is very special. The writing is Morrisonesque, I hate comparing writers but there I go. It‘s about all the things family does for each other out of love. George and Cocoa have one of the best he said/she said relationships I have ever read. There is a lot baking, talking to chickens named Clarissa and Cicero, and some hoodoo. It is👇🏼

Reggie 20 minutes later and my eyes are still wet from crying. Excuse me while I go bake something for my grandmother and send it to her. @Centique thanks for the rec! This and Potiki are definitely favorites of the year. 4y

Centique I am so so SO pleased you liked it. YES! I love knowing that glorious grandma and great aunt are in your head as well as in mine! Boy, I cried too. So glad that Potiki has also stood out for you. Just like Julia Alvarez has become a favourite for me! 4y
Reggie @batsy @Cathythoughts @erzascarletbookgasm people at work laughed cause they knew me. But when I said I was sad because a character died in a book I had finished last night, they understood. I hope you ladies like it if you read it. (edited) 4y

Avanders Awww. This is a book that a good friend (and native New Mexican 😉) strongly recommended to me... seems I should get on that! 4y
ReadingEnvy One of my best schools from library school went to a.quaker boarding school for 9-12 and they read anything but dead white guys. This is the first book she insisted I read as her new friend. Truly great. 4y
Reggie @ReadingEnvy I feel grateful to Litsy for this reason most of all. I used to be a top 40/best sellers list kind of reader but because of all of you I‘ve expanded as a reader. Authors of color, from different countries, translated. There was so much more out there than I knew. 4y
Centique I think I‘m going to talk about this on @ReadingEnvy best of the year - just checking we‘re not going to double up @Reggie ? 😘 4y
Reggie @Centique sure go for it! ❤️I went with Tender is the Flesh. 4y
Reggie @Centique Hey, Paula, I sent you something in the mail today but the postal service couldn‘t even give me a vague outline when it might get there due to the pandemic so here‘s hoping for the end of the month to mid January. 🤞🏼 4y
Centique @Reggie that‘s so lovely of you Reggie. It doesn‘t matter when it arrives. I sent you some little things too but same - don‘t know when they‘ll get there - could be early could be late 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y

Reggie @JanuarieTimewalker13 and sometimes you can be with someone and STILL be lonely. I like that song though. It plays in my casino every so often. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Yeah, I experienced that with a man in my past. He was remote. I‘m happy I didn‘t marry him. Instead I married someone who was affectionate yet full of drugs and I was so naive I didn‘t see the red flags, or so lonely I didn‘t want to...def a combo. Whatever. I‘m divorced more than 20 years, so that man is long gone. I told him if he loved me, he‘d stay away from me. Which was a good catch 22. He wasn‘t violent, at least. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Wait, do you work in a casino? Because I worked in a casino almost 30 years ago!!! 2 years of my life that was very well spent in terms of learning about humans. I could‘ve done without the second hand smoke, however. My casino had an excellent ventilation system, and at least I was able to sell the client coin and walk off. That job is clearly obsolete now, but it was fun. I was then promoted to high limit slots (in those days we had a $5 (edited) 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Carousel and that was considered high limit. Lol Now they have $100 machines...crazy. Dealers couldn‘t get away from smoke, I felt badly for them. 4y
Reggie @JanuarieTimewalker13 one of the benefits of Covid-19 for us right now is that you can no longer smoke in our casino which is great for us. And yes to learning about humans. Gambling is almost never for entertainment but more for distraction. They give us so much customer service training but what sometimes I wish they give us is how to help with grief. There‘s a lot of stories to be told by people who go to the casino. 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 That‘s great!! I know AC is smoke free. True, people use gambling as an escape. Wow, the many conversations probably make you a quasi psychologist!! I remember begging a customer not to shut down her machine (she went to sell her car) to come back and gamble more. I can‘t remember her name. It was absolutely pathetic. On the flip side, I also had Andre Agassi at my carousel and that was cool. He played a little than left. My boss said 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 I had the biggest smile on my face. Lol 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 Can you believe casinos are smoke free but the board of my condo won‘t even survey the residents to see if we want our living space smoke free?? I‘m beside myself. I wrote a letter requesting this and it was voted down by board 4-3. Reggie, I‘m not going to give up 4y
JanuarieTimewalker13 They should keep the casinos smoke free for the workers. There‘s an organization out of Cali called Americans for nonsmokers‘ Rights....ANR they help with these issues 4y

Pickpick

Phew. Just finished this & I feel bruised and battered. I picked this up because I loved Gloria Naylor‘s “The Women of Brewster Place”. This one is entirely different but also beautifully written. Mama Day is the daughter of the seventh son of a seventh son and has a “little gift” for the spiritual and magical. She is the wise woman of an island community of black Americans that somehow exists outside of state/national boundaries ⬇️

Centique The novel spends part of the time in Mama Day‘s world and part with her grand-neice, the last of the Day family, who lives in NY but whose story will bring the threads of their shared history back to light. Mama Day is fantastic - what a character 😍 And the town of Willow Springs is vibrant and eccentric and alive. A little spooky and ghostly - this would be a great October read for some Littens ⬇️ 4y
Centique It‘s a slow thoughtful start that whips up into a storm of plot and emotion before the end. 4.5 stars. 🌟🌟🌟🌟PS There are jumps in POV each time there is a section break in the book (every couple of pages) - only got confused once but I know that can be an issue for some readers so fair warning. (edited) 4y
Ruthiella I also loved The Women of Brewster Place and have been meaning to read more from Naylor. 😀 4y
Centique @Ruthiella isn‘t that the most fantastic book? It blew me away. This isn‘t as perfect but Mama Day is one of the best characters I‘ve ever experienced. I‘ll have to read it again cos I enjoyed being in her head so much. 4y

I wish I could express how good this book is. Mama Day is a force of nature. Reading Cocoa & George‘s story was bittersweet. But Mama Day and the people of Willow Island made hours feel like seconds. Mama Day must fight dark forces to save her great-niece. Is she powerful enough? A magical, engrossing tale that I am so glad I experienced. #MulticulturalLitClass

Mama Day is a strong and powerful woman in a tiny, elderly body. The characters and atmosphere of this novel were so intense I kept slowing down my reading hoping to extend my time in their company on their tiny, otherworldly island. It is a place present but not controlled by any government entity. They are a people apart. The point of view shifts frequently and without much warning so that made it a bit challenging at times.

Some of the best books we‘ve ever read have been set in the American South - and they‘re often overlooked. Which is why we included it as a category in the #ReadingWomenChallenge. One of our favorites is Gloria Naylor's MAMA DAY. Based off of THE TEMPEST, this novel is a family saga set on the Georgia coast and filled with all sorts of mysteries. Head over to our GoodReads group for more recs.

The Reading Women #podcast is finally on Litsy!! We're at the end of our month focusing on female writers of color, and today for #recommendsday we have a blog post of recs we didn't have time to mention in our last couple of podcasts. Of course, one of our book recs is MAMA DAY, an intense novel laced with magical realism and folklore. 😍 http://ht.ly/Jkk3302FX3Y

Chessa Sweeeeeeet! :D 8y
Peterdamien Such an amazing, cool book. The language and setting reminded me of "Beasts of the Southern Wild," but Mama Day was definitely a thing all its own 8y

Pickpick

I first read this book in grad school and I'm still amazed by the beautiful word imagery. In the style of the Tempest, we learn about Cocoa, her husband George, and a strange hex. A must-read. #recommendsday

My most treasured bookmarks for #FunFridayPhoto day!!! My mom is the closest you can get to being a professional scrapbooker/cardmaker, so I commissioned her to make bookmarks for the founding members of my book club. (You can see Dylan's teeth marks on the blue one. 😒) Much love to my fellow book club members @autumnprivett , @Jwaycaster , @mcorneli !!! #FriendshipToTheMax

SecretLivesOfFictionLovers Ohhh they are fabulous! 8y
kdwinchester @SecretLivesOfFictionLovers Thank you! My mom is so talented! (And I am, of course, completely unbiased. 😋) 8y

Bailedbailed

Have to bail on this audiobook. I cannot understand a word the narrator says! This one will have to read old school: on paper or kindle! 😝
