Extraordinaries
Extraordinaries | Tj Klune
Some people are extraordinary. Some are just extra. TJ Klune's YA debut, The Extraordinaries, is a queer coming-of-age story about a fanboy with ADHD and the heroes he loves. Nick Bell? Not extraordinary. But being the most popular fanfiction writer in the Extraordinaries fandom is a superpower, right? After a chance encounter with Shadow Star, Nova City's mightiest hero (and Nick's biggest crush), Nick sets out to make himself extraordinary. And he'll do it with or without the reluctant help of Seth Gray, Nick's best friend (and maybe the love of his life). Rainbow Rowell's Fangirl meets Marissa Meyer's Renegades in TJ Klune's YA debut.

Decided to give TJ Klune‘s YA series a try since I love his other 2 books so much. This isn‘t on the same level as the others, but I think it‘s a really fun story with an MC who can be a little extra (see blurb on the cover) & annoying (he has ADHD). He has great friends & adults in his life. MC is obsessed with the 2 superheroes in town & wants to become one. Also trying to figure out love, school, etc. #doublespin October

Revisiting this book has been a hoot! This quirky novel is positively side-splitting & quick-witted with Klune's hilarious, one-of-a-kind prose which will leave you in stitches. He breaths new life into Superhero tropes & fanfic clichés like a master, with top notch world building! The hidden messages alone deserve all the hype this book earned. A love letter to all geeky, queer & neurodiverse readers who aren't represented nearly enough! 🦸

First the good: this was a really cute YA novel with a twist on the typical superhero story, an adorably ridiculouss, slightly self-centered, and sweet protagonist with ADHD, and an adorable m/m love story. Now the not so good: there was a lot of police glorification that felt pretty uncomfortable, not to mention mentions of an instance of police misconduct / abuse that was very flippantly handled.

ChaoticMissAdventures Oh that last bit of your review is such a turn off. Thanks for pointing it out. 2y
rachelsbrittain @ChaoticMissAdventures yeah it was an unfortunate suprise for me. I still enjoyed the book but it put a definite damper on everything 2y

Pride Month: Day Three! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

In the past few years T.J. Klune has steadily climbed his way up into my top five favorite contemporary authors. This is the first book in his YA trilogy which is based on superheroes. I've been forcing myself to hold off starting it because I heard the second book ends with a big cliffhanger but now that the third book is due to come out next month it's time to jump in! 📚💕

An absolute blast! This book is over the top and does it so well. I don‘t read a lot of humorous books or superhero works, but this one popped right onto my favorites list. Nick‘s gullibility and obliviousness is so extra but Klune pulls it off extremely well. I was constantly laughing and looking forward to the next antics. This book also represents ADHD and grief very well. #LGBTQ #SuperHero #ADHD #Comedy

I have this book on my shelf but decided I'm going to listen to the audiobook instead and I'm glad I did. Listening to the reader dramatize the fanfic that opens the book (and which I assume shows up throughout the story) is an absolute TREAT! Between the reader's character voices and the actual teen writing drama flooding that fic, I'm pretty sure I laughed for 5 minutes.

As a 35 year old straight woman, I had no idea how much I needed a YA about gay, teenaged superheroes 😆. Klune is all heart as always, this book gave me all the feels. Nick's relationship with his dad pulled ALL my parental heartstrings. I laughed a lot along the way also, Nick is a real character and I am excited to read what's next in the series.

The audio narrator was an excellent pick for the story. He totally nailed it.

I did enjoy this, though there were parts that gave me pause (like the plot line where Nick‘s father had been demoted from detective for assaulting a witness after a personal tragedy, without much exploration) and there were opportunities for tightening—Nick‘s obliviousness goes on a little long and the freshness of the comedic voice struggles under the extension. Still, A+ manatee simile and charming characters.

I‘m not even particularly a superhero person (I know, I know. I like powers but have to be in the right mood for superheros) but this is utterly charming so far. My second Klune and excited his voice is still resonating for me. I‘m not even a quarter in but think if you enjoyed the Rest of Us Just Live Here this would also be up your alley.

I already thought TJ Klune was brilliant, and I am once again sitting with a book wondering why I didn‘t read it sooner. I‘m 1/2 a dozen chapters in, but I just love his writing so much. Funny & endearing & I relate to Nick a little too much 😂 & if you want your heart ripped out and put back together again (slowly and painfully) go read the Greek Creek series. I can‘t wait to reread that one again soon.

Everything about this book was GREAT except that ending. The BFF-to-lovers romance was really lovely, even though that trope is usually not my thing, dialogue was hilarious, characters beautifully drawn, & I didn‘t even mind that Nick‘s level of obliviousness strayed into unbelievability a lot. But man, as that last twist started showing up around the 80% mark, I was disappointed. It really undercut the most important theme of the book. ★★★☆☆.

This is a story of a world where superheroes, or “extraordinaries”, are slowly starting to emerge into the real world. We follow a comic-obsessed neurodivergent teenager, Nick Bell, who has a bit of an obsessive crush on a certain extraordinary. He makes friends, deals with relationship issues, and trudges through school while he‘s creating an elaborate plan to become an extraordinary himself,
(continued)

jessicawatson in hopes to impress and get closer to the mysterious (and handsome) hero, known among the city as Shadow Star.

jessicawatson If you like books about building friendships and relationships, or being able to see a young person go through the same struggles that a lot of high-schoolers do, this is an exciting and immersive story with just the right amount of action to keep you interested. This is definitely one of the best books I‘ve ever read. It‘s cliche enough to make you laugh, but not so much to make you cringe. I picked it up last minute and was pleasantly surprised. 4y
jessicawatson One of the main themes in this book is about overcoming internal conflict and mental disability. Nick has trouble functioning like his peers, and he finds himself in a lot of really bad or awkward situations that are usually self-inflicted. He gets overwhelmed and has a lot of internal conflict throughout the book because of his tendency to overthink, and because of his differences from the rest of the world. 4y

A hilarious queer superhero action romance. The main character is Nick, a gay teenager with ADHD who has a huge crush on Shadow Star, one of the local super heroes ( which they call Extraordinaries). Nick has a great group of friends who have each others' backs and a supportive dad. I was often doubled over laughing while reading this. Although this book is very funny, big themes of love, loss, grief, friendship, and acceptance run throughout.

I picked this up because of how much I loved The House in the Cerulean Sea. I didn‘t love Extraordinaries as much, but it was still fun.

Nick is 16, gay, and neurodiverse. He writes fan Fic about his city‘s superhero and supervillain, and he really wants to figure out a way to become Extraordinary himself. He also may be developing feelings for his best friend. He‘s got a really supportive dad and a fun group of friends.

Cute, fun YA.

Hooked_on_books After Cerulean Sea, which was just so charming, I figured I‘d grab this right away. But then I read an early review that mentioned a strong pro-police bent in the book in maybe not a good way. Did you find that to be the case? 4y
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books huh, no I didn‘t notice. It did show police as good guys, his dad was an officer. But I personally didn‘t notice anything problematic... it did show the media to be biased and liars, really just one reporter. I‘d say borrow don‘t buy on this though, unless you‘re very into YA, superheros, and clueless romances. 4y
Hooked_on_books No, definitely not very into superheroes and clueless romances. 😂 But that‘s good to know. I‘ll give it a try, but get it from the library. (And I think most of the media are biased, in one direction or the other.) 4y
Soubhiville @Hooked_on_books I completely agree it very difficult to find any media reports without bias! 4y
Hooked_on_books I actually saw a chart once that rated major media outlets by accuracy and bias. The most accurate per the chart were The Hill, Politico, NPR, and Bloomberg, though each had a slight bias. So if I want the real scoop, I usually try to go to one of those. I think we all know which outlets are biased (cough, cough). 4y

I was on a high from TJ Klune‘s House in the Cerulean Sea and wanted more from this author. The Extraordinaries is his new YA series for Tor Teen. And it‘s okay, but not a wow for me. The MC is immature, self-absorbed, and annoying (he is a teen boy!). I like the idea of superheroes and positive LBGTQ+ stories. I guess the ending sets up a more interesting second book. Kaddele @AutumnRLS It‘s so lovely! I keep going back to it again and again when I‘m having a bad day. Just to be clear, I absolutely did not sob my way through a YA queer romance novel with superheroes. Not even a little bit.

Nick Bell is starting the new school year trying to be better. He‘s taking his tablets for ADHD & staying out of trouble, as agreed with his dad. But he is writing fanfic about the superheroes active around the city. Particularly ShadowStar. Also his best friend Seth has been MIA all summer- does he have a secret boyfriend?

rockpools I‘d been wanting to read TJ Klune for ages, but hadn‘t realised this was his first YA novel. I was very unsure to begin with - it‘s cute and funny and painfully awkward, and his Nick‘s friendship group is adorable, as is his relationship with his dad (don‘t tell any of them). But it did read as very young YA, and romance and superheroes really aren‘t my thing. By a third of the way through, I was absolutely can‘t-put-it-down, gripped. 4y
rockpools The story was fun, funny and sweet, but above all, I fell for the characters and just how much they cared.

Thanks to #NetGalley and #Hodder&Stoughton for finally getting me to read TJ Klune with a free ARC. This is published tomorrow 14th July.
