The story tells of brutal battles with the Iroquois and their French allies, cruel captures, narrow escapes, and revenge. The beauty of the unspoiled wilderness and sorrow at its disappearance, symbolized in Hawkeye's Mohican friends, the last of their tribe, are important themes of the novel.

These are my 2 oldest books. Yes, that inscription says 1892. This is why I love old books. This is why I prefer paper over electrons. Think on it. Someone received these on Christmas 129 years ago!! Imagine the joy of receiving these. That itself makes them priceless to me.

After a long awaited opshop visit at my local opshop, only 2 days after their reopening from lockdown, I happily spent 2 hours browsing the newly stocked shelves.
It always surprises me how many I gather to take home, knowing my shelves won't hold anymore, but at $1 each it's just too irresistible. I managed to take home 39 books with 5 being for gifts & the rest for me 😊
So excited for The Silent Patient, Gone Girl, The Color Purple & Mohicans

I think it‘s kind of hard rating a classic because it‘s a lot slower paced and it usually requires some/a lot of analysis to fully appreciate (I recommend shmoop). Overall I really enjoyed this book and I definitely recommend!

Severnmeadows I have to admit no progress with the book (it‘s in a place named ‘difficult‘ in my brain along with Moby Dick😊) but the film has been a number one favourite with the whole family since it came out. Wonderful highland music, the Blue Ridge mountains, Daniel Day Lewis... (edited) 6y
OnlyYoo @Severnmeadows It was definitely a more difficult read lol 😂 I haven‘t read Moby Dick yet. The size of it scares me haha 6y

#soundtracklove

mrsmarch My dad's favorite book since he was a teenager and he has never been much of a reader. I couldn't finish it 😭 7y
Gezemice I loved it as a kid, but I read everything back then and what my parents had in abundance was classics. I loved all adventure stories, especially Indians! I do not know if I would like it now... maybe I should give it a try... 7y
Jabberwocky I read the book for an American lit course and remember loving it. That might just be because I was actually reading a novel for real actual university though... 😆📖 7y

Seshat I believe this is one of those rare cases when the movie is better. 7y
LauraBrook @mrsmarch it's not the easiest to get into for sure. If I didn't have to write a paper on it I probably would've bailed too. 7y
LauraBrook @Gezemice I remember more political things than Indian and adventures, but it's been 20 years. Curious to see what you think if you reread it! 7y
LauraBrook @Jaberwocky I read it in college too ( either for Am Lit or the movie and book class), and I finished it but struggled. I think some of it had to do with it coming at the end of the semester and burnout, you know. Hmmm, wonder what it would be like to read now? 7y
LauraBrook @Seshat I'm okay with that. Daniel Day-Lewis is fantastic in everything. And I might have to pull out the soundtrack cd to listen to tomorrow morning. 😊 7y
KathyWheeler I couldn't finish the book, but I always just loved this movie! 7y
Cortg No, it we have the Classic Illustrators edition for kids. I have had it on my TBR forever and a day.! 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 I loved this movie but the book 😞 it dragged for miles & miles! Lol 😂 7y
akc2ngel I had a hard time reading the book until I watched a production on KET. Once I heard the spoken lines I better understood the language flow and could then finish reading the book. 7y
LauraBrook @akc2ngel Interesting, and I can totally see how that would help! I'll happily watch the movie from the beginning to see what Daniel Day-Lew... I mean, what the plot is like again. 😲☺️ 7y

Jess_Read_This @Shortstack Really?! Even better! I thought the movie was fairly action packed too. 7y
Shortstack @Jess_Read_This Let me know what you think when you read it. I wish I hadn't gotten this one from the library or I'd consider a reread with you. Been rereading a lot lately 7y
Jess_Read_This @Shortstack Ok- does September or November work better for you as a reread month? 7y
Shortstack @Jess_Read_This You do you. I'm not sure I can do it either way. But let me know when and if I'm feeling inspired I might do the audible at least. 7y
Erika13137 @Jess_Read_This, the main character from MASH was played by Alan Alda and his nickname is Hawkeye. Great show from the 70's. 7y
Jess_Read_This @Erika13137 I have to revisit it now. I've watched an episode here and there but not enough to know enough. 😉 7y

A main character who is white but lives among the Indians & so embodies the best of both worlds, natives who are inherently lesser, but with 2 'noble' exceptions, white soldiers who are brave but dumb & weak compared to that amazing main guy, & 2 ladies in constant need of rescuing - blech. I will say that the ending was unexpectedly un-pat, which was a bit of a nice surprise, but not enough to save this one.
