The first book in a new culinary cozy series full of sharp humor and delectable dishesone that might just be killer.... When Lila Macapagal moves back home to recover from a horrible breakup, her life seems to be following all the typical rom-com tropes. She's tasked with saving her Tita Rosie's failing restaurant, and she has to deal with a group of matchmaking aunties who shower her with love and judgment. But when a notoriously nasty food critic (who happens to be her ex-boyfriend) drops dead moments after a confrontation with Lila, her life quickly swerves from a Nora Ephron romp to an Agatha Christie case. With the cops treating her like she's the one and only suspect, and the shady landlord looking to finally kick the Macapagal family out and resell the storefront, Lila's left with no choice but to conduct her own investigation. Armed with the nosy auntie network, her barista best bud, and her trusted Dachshund, Longanisa, Lila takes on this tasty, twisted case and soon finds her own neck on the chopping block

2.5 stars. I was recommended this book because of how much I loved Vera Wong but this fell flat for me. Suspense? No. Romance? No. Humor? No. This book would have been awesome if it was written by Jesse Q. Sutanto, but sadly it was not.

Have you ever tried making the recipes that are featured in the 📚 you read? Tonight, I baked Lila's Ube Crinkles recipe from the first book of the Tia Rosie's Kitchen cozy mystery series, and they were a big hit with the family. Book was very good, too. Give both a try! This story is the beginning of a cozy mystery series. Picked it up at the library as part of their book challenge (a book from a library display). Enjoyed the cultural aspect, the characters, & the food. Mystery was interesting. Set up of two potential love interests, but most of the story was about the family & MC. Fun, light read, will continue the series. The “aunties” reminded me of Dial A for Aunties book, without the hijinks.

Wanted to give a new genre a try, cozy mystery, and I learned it‘s not for me. There is no coziness to murder for me and the setting is couched in immigration and power in society and corruption, which also to me does not feel cozy or like the stakes are low in any way that I come to anticipate in any cozy genre. This is the first book in a multiple part series and I‘m happy to let the rest of the series go.

kera_11 I didn‘t know cozy mystery/murder was a genre 2y

Is it weird to say a book about several murders is fun? The food is an additional character and one of the best parts of this book. Another great part is the supporting cast. There were enough quirks to keep the book light but not so much that it was over the top. I did see the end coming but I think Manansala did a good job of planting some very subtle clues. I'll continue with the series but probably won't be devouring every book immediately.

Ruthiella If it‘s weird to say it, then I‘m pretty big weirdo! 😂 2y

This one was a #BOTM pick & in my #TBR stack for ages so I am glad that I got the nudge to read it from the #diversecozy buddy read. That being said, it wasn‘t my favorite. Having spent time in the Philippines & having Filipino friends, I enjoyed the dive into the food & culture but the mystery was too easily solved, the drama overwrought, the plot holes many & things, including the MC‘s choices were either over explained or not explained ⬇️

DebinHawaii … enough. Although not a love for me, I may still pick up the next book in the series just to see if things improve as I do like a foodie cozy. & the food was the best part of this one. Also adding it to my #SeriesLove2023 list & books read. 2y

A fun read. Lila comes back home to help with her aunt‘s failing restaurant. But, the death of Lila‘s Ex, while eating there is about to throw a monkey wrench in her plans. In order to avoid jail and further destruction of the restaurant, Lila begins investigating. Moments of humor. @FeatherV thank you for the recommendation and the loan.

While I liked this well enough, it was not the best thing since sliced bread, which I‘d been led to believe from all the love given it. I had issues remembering some of the characters because they weren‘t all that memorable. Also, while humorous, it wasn‘t quite as funny as I expected. I continued with The Corner That Held Them on my #audiowalk #diversecozy #NunLit

I don‘t know. It made me want some ube crinkle cookies but other than that…

people don‘t act like this. The restaurant that‘s accused of murdering the food critic makes the food at the wake. I was confused that they would even go to the wake. & they… made the food. For the wake.

I didn‘t care for the “love triangle” or the family drama of every side character. & it just never really called to me between reads.

January‘s #diversecozy buddy read

Oh dear, what a mess. I really loved learning more about Filipino-American culture and food (oh the food! 🤤), but the plot/mystery itself was partly overly complicated and partly very obvious. I was baffled by some of the characters‘ motivations and reactions, including the MC‘s. Felt very much like a debut 🤷🏻‍♀️

5feet.of.fury I agree, & I‘m glad you said that, I was at like 70% and obviously an easy one to finish but I was having a real problem of motivation bc I had no interest in these characters. Everyone‘s behavior was so random. 2y
sarahbellum @5feet.of.fury when it was revealed what Janet had done and Lila ran up to her and gave her a HUG and Terrence didn‘t want to leave her, I was flabbergasted. Everyone was so anti-drug and she was directly responsible for the flood of illegal drugs into their community! I just… ugh 🤬😵‍💫 I could go on and on haha 2y

KathyWheeler @sarahbellum That was just so weird! As was her aunt‘s restaurant serving the food at the wake when they‘d been suspected of killing the dead person. 2y
5feet.of.fury @sarahbellum that was so silly! The way Lila accused everyone, assumed it was the other restaurant owners but ate at all these places and accused them of murder. and how they don‘t really address Derek being Lila‘s ex until over half the book is gone, but especially Rosie‘s Kitchen making the food for the wake for the dead person they were under investigation for poisoning… mind blowing to me. 😂😂 2y
5feet.of.fury @KathyWheeler that one just kills me 😅 2y
sarahbellum @KathyWheeler @5feet.of.fury yes, the wake food and the eating at all the suspects‘ restaurants! Another thing that killed me was when Adeena called Lila while Kevin was still at the cafe to tell her that she knew how Derek was killed and who did it… like what???? The killer is right next to you! Get away, don‘t keep working and rat him out within earshot 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 2y
KathyWheeler @sarahbellum Really! That drive me crazy too! 2y
mhillis It wasn‘t my favorite either but I‘d still like to give book three a try this month! 2y

This was a fun quick read. I found the bulk of the book quite humorous, though there was something about the ending that seemed slightly rushed and unsatisfying and I‘m not sure if this one will be memorable. I loved this #CozyMystery! It was a great balance of plot and character development. The mix of small town murder, charming characters, and mouth watering foodie moments is just right. I'm a life long mystery lover, but I haven't really enjoyed the genre in recent years, (definitely a me problem, lol) but I really got into this one. Also - I am definitely going to be trying the recipies in the back of the book! The excitement is real!

I figured out the whodunnit in chapter 3. Yes. Right when the “victim” died, I knew who was responsible. The rest of the book was dull, filled with little more than food descriptions and flat, two-dimensional characters. This is my work book club book and I‘m ashamed to show my face at book club, since I assigned this disappointment. 😭

A “cozy” mystery filled with death, drugs and cooking. I found this book incredibly witty with beautiful character development. I loved how the author discussed the hardships of returning to her hometown after being away and how relationships can change due to this decision. But, most importantly, I didn‘t figure out who did it until the end! Fun read and I‘m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

The cover design drew me in. This is the first book in a culinary, cosy mystery series. Lila moves back home after going through a relationship breakup. She‘s asked to help save her families restaurant but when a food critic drops dead after eating her food this becomes an ‘Agatha Christie‘ case.
There is no concept of grief in this book and some of the chapters dragged, overall this fell flat for me and not sure if I‘ll read the next book

Not sure if the awesome cover or hunger made me choose this as my BOTM last April. But I think maybe I‘m not really a cozy reader, so take this review with a grain of salt.😉

While it had its funny moments and some recipes I‘m going to try, for the most part I found this book unbelievable to the point of goofiness. The story was rambling and over saturated with food talk😲, and I rolled my eyes far too many times to make this even a so-so.

Why yes, I bought a 🌈 bagel specifically to match with my book photo! 😂

It took me a week to get through what should have been a quick cozy read. Part of that was me and my fatigue, but the other part was a general annoyance with the lack of emotions in this story. I loved all the Filipino food descriptions, and I will give the 2nd book a try, but it was painfully obvious this was a debut. Was Lila supposed to be emotionally distant? 🤷🏻‍♀️
