The first book in a new culinary cozy series full of sharp humor and delectable dishesone that might just be killer.... When Lila Macapagal moves back home to recover from a horrible breakup, her life seems to be following all the typical rom-com tropes. She's tasked with saving her Tita Rosie's failing restaurant, and she has to deal with a group of matchmaking aunties who shower her with love and judgment. But when a notoriously nasty food critic (who happens to be her ex-boyfriend) drops dead moments after a confrontation with Lila, her life quickly swerves from a Nora Ephron romp to an Agatha Christie case. With the cops treating her like she's the one and only suspect, and the shady landlord looking to finally kick the Macapagal family out and resell the storefront, Lila's left with no choice but to conduct her own investigation. Armed with the nosy auntie network, her barista best bud, and her trusted Dachshund, Longanisa, Lila takes on this tasty, twisted case and soon finds her own neck on the chopping block

I loved this #CozyMystery! It was a great balance of plot and character development. The mix of small town murder, charming characters, and mouth watering foodie moments is just right. I'm a life long mystery lover, but I haven't really enjoyed the genre in recent years, (definitely a me problem, lol) but I really got into this one. Also - I am definitely going to be trying the recipies in the back of the book! The excitement is real!

Finishing my second book in the #LMPBC Round 15 and working on this sweater for my husband on a beautiful fall Sunday. @Catsandbooks I will have your next #LMPBC book in the post tomorrow after school. Hope it greets you well! #knitting

I figured out the whodunnit in chapter 3. Yes. Right when the “victim” died, I knew who was responsible. The rest of the book was dull, filled with little more than food descriptions and flat, two-dimensional characters. This is my work book club book and I‘m ashamed to show my face at book club, since I assigned this disappointment. 😭

rwmg It's a terrible feeling, isn't it, when despite having done all your research on Litsy and LT not even you like the book you choose for book club 3mo

#BookReport it has been a weird week. Lots of starts and stops with not much sticking. I enjoyed the 3 books I managed to finish. Will probably DNF the Margolyes. Love her acting and the Graham Norton clips I‘ve seen but too many unfamiliar references for me to connect to. RBC is getting a lot of love and I‘m in like but not 💜. Hoping TPH will be a winner.

A “cozy” mystery filled with death, drugs and cooking. I found this book incredibly witty with beautiful character development. I loved how the author discussed the hardships of returning to her hometown after being away and how relationships can change due to this decision. But, most importantly, I didn‘t figure out who did it until the end! Fun read and I‘m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

The cover design drew me in. This is the first book in a culinary, cosy mystery series. Lila moves back home after going through a relationship breakup. She‘s asked to help save her families restaurant but when a food critic drops dead after eating her food this becomes an ‘Agatha Christie‘ case.
There is no concept of grief in this book and some of the chapters dragged, overall this fell flat for me and not sure if I‘ll read the next book

Not sure if the awesome cover or hunger made me choose this as my BOTM last April. But I think maybe I‘m not really a cozy reader, so take this review with a grain of salt.😉

While it had its funny moments and some recipes I‘m going to try, for the most part I found this book unbelievable to the point of goofiness. The story was rambling and over saturated with food talk😲, and I rolled my eyes far too many times to make this even a so-so.

⭐️⭐️

Why yes, I bought a 🌈 bagel specifically to match with my book photo! 😂

It took me a week to get through what should have been a quick cozy read. Part of that was me and my fatigue, but the other part was a general annoyance with the lack of emotions in this story. I loved all the Filipino food descriptions, and I will give the 2nd book a try, but it was painfully obvious this was a debut. Was Lila supposed to be emotionally distant? 🤷🏻‍♀️

PurpleyPumpkin Well done on the matching bagel!😆 7mo

Clwojick @damselsgotballs some days I do! 60 or so of the 150 were for my childrens book and graphic novel challenges, so they were quick to get through. For full length adult books I normally average 2-3 a day. 8mo
hoppeduponbooks Wow 2-3 full length adult books per day. That is amazing😱 But I guess you don't read that amount every day though. 8mo

I admit that I mostly stuck with this murder mystery for the food content. It‘s a romantic comedy in the voice of Lila, a Filipina American who has a good heart, yet hates to admit she has flaws. Several men are interested in Lila, but people keep dying around her. The plot isn‘t believable but it is entertaining. And the food sounds fabulous. There are even recipes at the end. Audiobook read by Danice Cabanela.

Of course, this was before I knew anything, before I knew who he‘d become. Back when I thought we could pick up where we‘d left off, when I thought the surest cure to my heartbreak was a new love. I mean, that‘s how it worked in just about every romcom ever, and why would they steer me wrong?

I‘m not much for “cozy mysteries” but considering the seriousness of this plot, it didn‘t feel cozy. Much of the seriousness felt tossed off with food descriptions and attempts at sarcasm or flippant humor. It was hard to take any of it as a light read, the lead character in particular. I‘m definitely not this genre‘s prime demo….but this wasn‘t for me.

slategreyskies Oh, that‘s disappointing! I was planning on reading this one, but now I‘m not so sure! :) 9mo

I had to remind myself that Lila was an adult, not a teen. Her behavior and her age didn‘t always mesh. Maybe generational differences, but Lila seemed immature and self-absorbed. Was excited to check this out, but felt underwhelmed while reading. Did enjoy the celebration of Filipino food, but it felt like mostly food descriptions, light on crime solving. Hoping the series gets better, but don‘t think I‘ll continue.

Somewhere between a pick and a so so. This was a bit more violent and gritty than what I usually look for in a cozy, but sidestepped tackling any issues of institutional racism even though they were alluded to. What really sells this one is the diversity of characters and celebration of Filipino food and families.

After reading the tagged book I had to try adobo (beef) for #foodandlit. Also tried their chicken dish with Pancit (rice noodles) and lumpia (spring rolls). The next book in the series has Halo Halo in the title so I had to try it. Halo Halo is the desert cups with ube ice cream, snow cone, fresh fruit and syrup on the bottom. Everything was so delicious that everyone had seconds of everything. My youngest said we have to go there again!
