Emily Benedict has come to Mullaby, North Carolina, hoping to solve at least some of the riddles surrounding her mother's life. But the moment Emily enters the house where her mother grew up and meets the grandfather she never knew, she realizes that mysteries aren't solved in Mullaby, they're a way of life: Here are rooms where the wallpaper changes to suit your mood. Unexplained lights skip across the yard at midnight. And a neighbor, Julia Winterson, bakes hope in the form of cakes, not only wishing to satisfy the town's sweet tooth but also dreaming of rekindling the love she fears might be lost forever. Can a hummingbird cake really bring back a lost love? Is there really a ghost dancing in Emily's backyard? The answers are never what you expect. But in this town of lovable misfits, the unexpected fits right in. Look for special features inside. Join the Circle for author chats and more. RandomHouseReadersCircle.com

Mullaby is a town with secrets and regrets. It pushes people away and pulls them back. When Dulcie's daughter Emily arrives in Mullaby looking to understand where she came from, she tries to piece together the mysteries of the town.

Sarah Addison Allen is one of my favorite authors!

When Emily is orphaned as a teenager, she goes to live with her only surviving family member: a grandfather she‘s never met who lives in a town her mom was born but that Emily has never visited. Grandpa is a quiet giant, the town wary of Emily, and Grandpa isn‘t explaining why. Emily‘s mother is a consummate do-gooder, so why do the townspeople blame Emily for her mother‘s sins when Emily can‘t imagine her mother ever hurting anyone? And she‘s ⬇️

Texreader for a boy whose family is arch-enemies with Emily‘s family. Slowly, her mom‘s story is revealed and the truth sinks in. The magical realism is lovely, and Grandpa is the person everyone wants as a grandparent. Family secrets are revealed and magic may explain it all. #authoramonth @Soubhiville 2mo

4✨ I was about to DNF this because there was so many secrets. I was worried they would not all be answered. I‘m glad I stuck it out because as the mysteries started to pull together I couldn‘t stop reading. Now I wish there was more! I‘ll have to read more by this author now.

Turns out this really wasn't my typical read- for me it ended up being more of a romance novel than I expected. It wasn't bad but it did was fairly cliched and corney. Still it wasn't a slog- there were some fun magickal/supernatural elements that I wish were more developed. And did anyone else think werewolf? Haha
I did reallly appreciate the family dynamics.

Bit of a catch-up as I forgot to do #bookreport last week 😄
I‘ve spent a little more time watching tv lately so I‘ve only got 10 books to show for the last two weeks... still not too shabby given the quality of the books read!

Sarah Addison Allen is quickly becoming one of my favorite writers. Who am I kidding? She already is!

This writer knows how to unfold a mystery! I‘ve read this book and Garden Spells and they‘re both page turners.

I loved Garden Spells, so when I saw this one at my local library, I had to take it home! Full of whimsy, magic and joy, this book takes a light hearted look at small town Carolina, where traditions are long and the town always remembers. A love story, a fantasy and an ode to growing up and still believing in magic. Charming.

I love the magical writing of Sarah Addison Allen.
She is so lyrical as she describes the town and characters that I can't help but fall for the spell she's cast.
The parallel story of two different people, a young girl and an older woman, who have just met and have the same goal of belonging is the focus of the book and it's well written.
