Deja Dead, Volume 1
Deja Dead, Volume 1 | Kathy Reichs
Kathy Reichs blasts into Patricia Cornwell territory -- and onto the "New York Times" bestseller list -- with this critically acclaimed debut novel inspired by Reichs' own career. Dr. Temperance Brennan, the wry, impassioned director of forensic anthropology for the province of Quebec, is driven to unravel shocking acts of violence by reading the bones of the dead. In the year since Tempe left behind a shaky marriage in North Carolina, work has often preempted her weekend plans to explore Quebec. But when an unidentified female corpse is discovered meticulously dismembered and stashed in garbage bags, Tempe detects an alarming pattern within the grisly handiwork -- and her professional detachment gives way to a harrowing search for a killer in the city's winding streets. With little help from the police, Tempe calls on her expertise, honed in the isolated intensity of the autopsy suite, to investigate on her own. But her determined chase is about to place those closest to her -- her best friend and her daughter -- in mortal danger....

My lovely, clever, marvelous #Littens . I recently started rewatching Bones. And I‘ve realized I haven‘t read any of the books that the show is based on.

Are they any good? Should I give them a try?
#BookAdaptations

Ruthiella It‘s been ages since I read one. As I recall, they were pretty good. I think, however, the TV show is not an adaptation of the books but more loosely based on Kathy Reichs real life. 7mo
vlwelser The books are good. But they have no relation to the show. You should try one. But think of it as a separate thing. 7mo
Kristy_K Agree with @Ruthiella and @vlwelser . Books are good but outside of the MC‘s name and job, they are different. I enjoyed both the books and the show! 7mo

julesG What the others said. The books are good, but it's definitely not about the TV serie's Tempe. I'd say the novels are the fictional/exaggerated story of Kathy's job. 7mo
thebacklistbook According to an interview the TV series is about Kathy Reichs but she wasn't comfortable being directly depicted so they named the character after Tempe instead. The books are in my opinion good. As long as you don't go in expecting to recognize stuff from the show. 7mo
Shemac77 I love the books! 7mo
TrishB I love the books- but I‘ve never watched the series! 7mo
LiseWorks I love the books, they are not like the show. 7mo
BookBr The books are fantastic, but the show takes a very different take on the basics of the story… 7mo
Read4life I‘ve enjoyed both. Like others have said, they are different. The books are closer to her real life where she splits her time between NC & Quebec. 7mo
TNbookworm I love the show but haven't read any of the books either 🙂 7mo

I enjoyed this first book in a series. It‘s set in Canada and the French was a little challenging to muddle through. It is also set in the 1990s, so interesting to see how the characters handle being cut off from each other when they leave their homes & how dependent the are on their answering machines.

This is a interesting story about a coroner in Canada that is on a case that turns dangerous. I‘m not sure how I feel about the character‘s commentary about the details about her surroundings.

Temperance Brennan of the books is a middle aged, recovering alcoholic with a daughter in college. She‘s not the most socially adept person, but she lacks the awkward charm of her alter ego on Bones. The humour and relationships I loved in Bones were completely lacking in the novel. The whole book is rather dry and if it hadn‘t been so short, I might have given up on it.

To be fair, it is a first novel of a series, so maybe the books get better.

tokorowilliamwallace Nice comparative characterization of themes and elements here. I find these kinds of review helpful for my lagging sense of comprehension and need to have some thematic context when browsing and deciding upon more popular or widely-read authors and series. 3y

2. Reich‘s Temperance Brennon, Patterson‘s Alex Cross,& I get frustrated the dysfunction, but Cornwell‘s Scarpetta
3. Tropes: none-well, my IRL book club tends to read WW2 books about ordinary people doing extraordinary things & I like those.

Being a first book there were certainly some growing pains present. The pacing and plotting felt off. The animosity between Claudel and Brennan felt super forced. That being said, it held my attention throughout. the action largely exist in the last thirty or so pages. Tempe was seriously frustrating in this one. Going off all half-cocked, rushing headlong into dangerous situations with zero planning.

📚Review- Deja Dead- Kathy Reichs📚

After leaving her rocky marriage in North Carolina, Dr. Temperance Brennan goes to Quebec to help identify bones.

When bones of women begin to be discovered dismembered and in trash bags, Temperance is quick to see a possible pattern. No one wants to believe her and she starts doing her own investigation.

Can she prove there‘s a pattern? The killer is getting closer and he can almost touch her.

I tried, I really did but just couldn't get into this. I dont particularly like Temperance and unusually the level of detail put me off. Despite having a scientific background myself, think I'd prefer more focus of characters than the science, it was all very dry.

I started out with some twilight zone (the new one. Pretty good, yet still feels a bit retro?) and have moved onto Bones.
I still haven‘t seen all the episodes of Bones, and still need to read the books. I think I have 3 on my shelves.
But for now the season 3 finale is on TV. I was so shocked by this episode and it still upsets me to this day :(

TV show, Bones, is based upon this series. Tempe Brennan, Quebec‘s director of forensic anthropology, is in search of a serial killer which has killed her best friend and has her daughter in mortal danger. A slow beginning but fascinating look of working in a coroner‘s office. Harrowing plot and characters. Impeccable writing and suspenseful. Looking forward to book 2 and recommended to those who love gripping thrillers.

I finally tried the Temperance Brennan series as I've not read the books or watched 'Bones' the tv series loosely based on the author & character. My niece said my personality reminded her of the MC & while I don't know that I see it, I'll take it.😆I liked the story, the Montreal setting & the forensic details which are right up my alley. It was narrated by Amy Irving who did an excellent job & was a quick 5-hour listen. I'm on hold for book 2.👍
