I have been wondering why this subgenre is so popular. As someone who has been stalked and assaulted I have a hard time finding the romance in any of this- it lends more to horror for me (although i did think Hooked told a good story and was shocked i liked it) But when reading chapter 2 in the book I wonder if this is a different way to understand the dark man in our psyches. Or is this representing our Shadows and our own dark sides? I have

Chrissyreadit so many thoughts and hopes for discussion on this topic- What do these books heal in us? or What messages do you get from genres with more violence and/or taboo themes? How do you respond to taboo? Could that be a dark man in your life? 1d
GingerAntics Yeah, I‘ve wondered that myself. I used to enjoy those books as a teen, until I was stalked, abused, etc. Now they just don‘t sit right with me. I‘ve always seen it as the predator trying to convince us that their harm is actually good/romantic. I find it troubling that more and more of this is written by women. 1d
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics interestingly I‘ve found unhealed women read these and healed women abhor them. Only reason I say this is it‘s how I feel and then I got into a discussion with some women and they said they read it for comfort because it was comforting. When they got to healing and therapy they no longer could read it. Interesting. I honestly don‘t know over all- that‘s a tiny group here at a women shelter book club. I personally ⬇️ 1d

TheBookHippie Don‘t read this type of book. I don‘t read certain subjects because I do not believe it‘s ethical and is sometimes theater trauma or voyeur trauma. No thanks. There are things I lived I care not to read about. It‘s not what I use reading for. I however have no issue with people who need it or want it. Personal choice is not my business. 🙃 1d
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie that‘s a really valid point. If some people want to read it, like it, more power to them I guess. I still find it heartbreaking that falling for the predator is this massive trope. I mean, even Beauty and the Beast falls into this. We‘re selling it to little kids as normal. 1d
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics I adored dark fairytales as a child and they were comforting because no happy ending and it was real. Like my life. Disney fairytales made me angry because I felt it was lying. It is probably why I adore Alice in Wonderland more than the others. I still love Dark FairyTales but now it‘s just nostalgia -look what saved me. 1d
lil1inblue @TheBookHippie I tend to agree with you. I don't find an overall value in this type of book, and it does feel voyeuristic. Not gonna judge others for reading it, but it's not for me. 🎯 1d
BookwormAHN I don't know, I read Anne Rice's Beauty novels as a teenager and they really freaked me out. Having said that Haunting Adeline is on my tbr. I think it just depends on the story and my mood 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1d
ravenlee I wonder if some of the appeal of reading this is that, at any point, you can put it down. It‘s a small power, but sometimes that‘s all you‘ve got. Maybe the glimpse into the male motivation validates something for some readers (largely the ones who think rape is about sex rather than power - I had someone explain rape fantasy to me as “making a man so wild he can‘t overcome his desire for me” 🤢). 1d
GingerAntics @ravenlee 🤮 gross! I don‘t mind a mutual chasing fantasy, where a couple who have developed a relationship and trust have this shared fantasy of chasing and catching and whatever… because it‘s mutual and it‘s a good time for all. I just don‘t understand rape fantasies, though. Just, gross. It seriously sounds like something a man made up and convinced some women they actually had. 24h
GingerAntics @TheBookHippie I like original fairytales too. They are more about teaching kids about life and reality than this Disney crap. I loved Disney movies as a kid, but mostly for the music. If it‘s a musical, I‘ll watch just about anything. lol 24h
TheBookHippie @ravenlee controlling the narrative is big. Rape is about power and control. So they are controlling at what they can take in is plausible. Uncontrollable desire is a myth. Insecure women fall for it everyday … 23h
AmyG I am always fascinated by people who do things I‘d never dream of doing. What compels them. It‘s all about understanding why. @ravenlee Yes…understanding the motivation. But I don‘t read these either or don‘t intentionally read them or even like them. (edited) 23h
AnnCrystal This is an incredible thread to read through.

Personally I can't read stories or watch movies with this kind of romance...well, too much gore or sex just gets annoying anyway...but painting this kind of sinister romance seems dangerous.

I like a good beauty and the beast story, there's a message there. There's more to a person besides their “good“ or “bad“ looks.

But respect and trust in a relationship should be things that are highlighted. 👇
18h
AnnCrystal I haven't read these titles, but I have had the opportunity to buy each of these books. Thankfully I researched beforehand or read the book's “warning.“

I have accidentally read books like these. If too terrible, they usually get donated, unfinished. Otherwise I skip along.

I feel that stories like these might make a young girl believe that this kind of disrespect is ok, natural, acceptable.

👇🏼

18h
AnnCrystal In a world with so many predators and bullies, we need stories that teach our young girls what respect means.

I believe there are many of us who are looking warriors, and so many mistake cruelty for strength...
(edited) 18h
ElizaMarie So, I am behind on the #WildWomenReading, so I am going to answer this (but not using the current reading to guide my discussion). I have been stalked/beaten/tortured/sexually assaulted AND I have read these types of books (only Lights Out on this list). I don't know why I do. I don't know if its a feeling of control. Like I can read about these things, and be fully “safe“. I watch documentaries about DV, watch Law & Order SVU, podcast truecrime ⬇ 5h
ElizaMarie And yet, when I feel unsafe or triggered. I can use my coping skills, or totally avoid/DNF/quit the subject. I don't know if it's a test of my boundaries and my feelings of safety, or what it is. I am currently reading this one and am very much struggling with it. He is a stalker/user/rapist. I am more than likely going to DNF it. Some of these dark “romances“ are about stalking and/or coercion, but they try to pretend the woman finds it ⬇ (edited) 5h
ElizaMarie desirable. Which helps me not think of it as “rape“ even though the parallels are there. 5h
ElizaMarie @ravenlee I answered this, then went back and read everyone's comments - I think that's what it does for me. I can put it down. I can choose, where in the past, that choice was taken from me. 5h
ElizaMarie @AnnCrystal I agree with the concern of having young girls feel this type of male attention is “normal“ or should be “sought“. I, too, worry about what we teach children (both boys and girls) about consent, respect, kindness, and general human-ness.

I don't know how old. You are, but have you seen stories about how we as a society talked about women's bodies in the 90s? That was my teenage years and deeply ingrained into my psyche.
4h
AnnCrystal @ElizaMarie 💝🫂💝 the 90s were my childhood years.

That's true, we need to teach the boys too. We need to encourage these important teachings into our children daily lives.

For one of the books I accidentally read recently, I went researching about it after and saw a review from a young woman. She said it had been the very first book she ever read and believed that the abuse in the book was just how romance was, normal.
2h
AnnCrystal @ElizaMarie that review has really remain with me. The same reviewer stated that she has now read other books, and has come to realize her mistake. But her words spoke volume.

You're right. I believe so much more work needs to be done to educate our children on what a healthy relationship truly is...

💝🫂💝.

The sentence before this refers to the way families of origin impact emotional health, then recognizes the way culture impacts mental health. The discussion around this is the source of many books. In this case the dark man is the entity that threatens our cultural health. What are ways we can create and strengthen our emotional energy when culture is ruled by a predator?

GingerAntics I think we‘ve got “culture ruled by a predator” nailed. I think the biggest problem facing us today is that too few people see this as a problem. 1d
TheBookHippie Art, Music, Poetry, create create create. Facilitate joy. That‘s the response. Form community. That‘s a culture response. (edited) 1d
ElizaMarie Again, I am behind. I will try to read today (been a rough week). This quote reminded me of the “diluting water“ video. Where your generational trauma gets passed on, and then you get “water“ to dilute it and make it less of a trauma to pass on yourself. My “water“ is --- friendship (groups of strong people like y'all), finding little wins, taking time for me. 4h

Do you recognize parts of yourself that can feel toxic but are actually also healthy and necessary?

GingerAntics My anger and my drive. Both can be toxic if I don‘t find a proper outlet for them, but when I do find a proper outlet, amazing things can happen. 1d
TheBookHippie My sheer will. Tenacity. I am not swayed. Immovable. No tact. And with @GingerAntics anger …my RAGE is misinterpreted constantly. Interestingly enough my love and loyalty are seen as threats. Allll could be toxic or viewed incorrectly. Everyday I wake up I chose -do I use all of this for good. 😶 1d
AmyG Absolutely. I tend to give people alot of “rope to hang themselves with”. Once I reach my limit with someone because of how they treat me or others….I am done. No more chances. I am quite rigid in that respect. 23h
ElizaMarie My compartmentalizm. I work as a psychiatric/mental health nurse. I engage with a challenging population and am not well-treated by most of my patients. I am able to remove myself from the nasty insults getting slung at me, do what needs to be done in the moment, and maintain my peace (which can be difficult). It turns into a problem when I do this way too much and build too strong walls. (But thats what therapy is for 🤍) 4h

This chapter was intense! Was there a quote or thought you want to discuss? Please post and share!
Have you ever considered what archetypes you embody? Both the light and shadow side?

GingerAntics Which chapter was this? I feel like I‘m lost. Sorry. My brain has not been working properly lately. I‘m hoping it fully engages again next week. 1d
Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics it‘s chapter 2 1d

Deblovestoread I really feel this quote. I feel like I have compartmentalized each section of my life based on that times trauma. My child self is one being raised by an angry mother whose words and hands struck out, my teenage rebel self who made horrible choices and so on. They each informed the next but also each lives in their little pocket if that makes sense. 1d
Deblovestoread So this quote really resonated with me “….or those with injured instincts still, like flowers, turn in the direction of whatever sun is offered.” 1d
TheBookHippie Mostly the creative and freedom things struck me. 🙃 1d

Today is always hard for me. It was my first month in WV. I watched the towers fall in disbelief from my new job as a Spec Ed teacher. I was cut off for a week from my family and close friends. My friend from HS was there as a cop. My uncle was there as a fire man- my cousin was there as a fireman, my brother was there after- initially to rescue people but soon to recover remains the towers were no longer in view from my childhood kitchen window.

JenlovesJT47 Such an awful day 🫂♥️ 2w
Chrissyreadit The stories of hope and loss live in my head and heart today because these were people i knew and know. They really are the heroes in our stories. I‘d like to think the flags at half mast continue to honor them as well. My cousin in now a Fire Chief. On that day he was in a training- while his company left to answer the call. He jumped on with a different company. His entire company died that day. I did not know any of them but i still grieve for 2w

dabbe The book I used with my freshmen is tagged. It also taught the idea that we have lost sight of who we really are, and we have buried those stories too deep into our collective unconscious that they're hard to find. We lead very linear lives these days. Always look ahead, don't move back, go forward and march! Even our clocks are linear on our phones! When's the last time we looked at a clock where the hand is MOVING? Our ancestry lived cyclical ⬇️ 3w
dabbe ... not linear lives, and it is only by going back and finding those deep connections to nature and our pagan selves that we will unearth our stories again and find that wild woman that is still there deep within us. 3w
Cuilin @dabbe “Our pagan selves” yes. I hear this as a call almost 💜 Go back, listen, connect!! 3w

Chrissyreadit @dabbe I do not see the tagged book can you reshare? 3w
Chrissyreadit @dabbe @Cuilin I really agree about pagan roots. The book When God Was a Woman was a huge influence on me. 3w
TheBookHippie @dabbe I have never believed in linear life. Nature is us. @Chrissyreadit @Cuilin one of the things I find interesting is people‘s opinions of being barefoot they peg it is dirty and I think of shoes that way. I‘m barefoot as much a possible and it‘s so grounding. 3w
Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie science is showing that to be better, except here in appalachia where it supports worms. 3w
dabbe @Chrissyreadit Shoot. I never tagged it! 3w
dabbe @Cuilin Is is our call! In Hero's Quest lingo, it's our CALL TO ADVENTURE: to slay the dragon, cross the poisonous river, deal with asshole men 😂 ... and we wild women have to be our own heroes and answer that call. 3w
dabbe @Chrissyreadit Adding that to my TBR! 🖤🤍🩶 3w
dabbe @TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit @Cuilin Kids would try to convince me of a linear nature example: the seasons: first comes spring, then we move forward to summer ... Then I showed them that this “linear“ pattern CYCLICALLY repeats itself. The look on their faces. God, that's the teaching I miss. I even had them look at a linear clock; some kids actually flinched when the number changed. They felt calmer watching the analog clock seconds move. 3w
TheBookHippie @dabbe best part of teaching ♥️ although the you were alive when a man landed on the moon generally shocks 🤣 3w
TheBookHippie @dabbe I firmly believe the making them calm-love linear- by not knowing how to live in the unknown is what got us here. The drive for control to combat fear is wild. 3w
ElizaMarie @Dabbe - I never really thought about the way we see clocks now vs when I was growing up looking at clocks. It makes me yearn for that time and actually wear a “regular“ watch. 3w
ElizaMarie So, this might be a bit off topic, but with your statement of the “narrative we tell ourselves“. It's something I have been working with in therapy. The negative self-talk, the putting myself in a box of shoulds (mostly to frame a masculine ideal). I think back to the young child, sitting with my abuela, hearing her tell stories of her childhood, folk stories, just talking. I sometimes forget how much power I have in me. 3w
Chrissyreadit @ElizaMarie YES!!!! I am so glad you are learning to shift your narrative! 3w

Cuilin I grew up in the Irish/Celtic mythology tradition. I don‘t think I fully understood it as a child. It was just fun stories. Now as an adult I‘m embracing the feminine power of the Brehon laws and the tuatha dé Danann. 3w
TheBookHippie I grew up with dark fairytales and folklore and BabaYaga. I always preferred it as it was realistic and truth. Disney Princess HEA has always not appealed to me, at all. I find it demeaning to women and I feel it weakens them. It‘s a tool of the patriarchy in my opinion. 3w
dabbe I was all in for the fairy tales with the HEA's. My parents divorced when I was 10, so I was always chasing down a male, authoritative figure--even though my mom was trying to teach me otherwise. Then, Mr. Gailo gave us Edith Hamilton's MYTHOLOGY book, and my eyes 👀 out of my socket. Such brutality! Such female wusses and bas-asses! It was then Disney no more but GRIMM'S FAIRY TALES for me. The grimmer, the better. 3w

Chrissyreadit @Cuilin I also love Celtic mythology! and @dabbe i grew up on the blue fairy book and green fairy book and grimes fairy tales. I was the mom who did not embrace Disney- and my daughter struggled by her limited engagement in pop culture. but i really was frustrated by how princesses were always the main character and everything was to get a prince. and the mother always died- and the stepmother was always cruel… 3w
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit I like the colors fairy books too. My daughter only liked Lion King and then Hunchback of Notre Dame Disney of all things .. I didn‘t promote it either. She adored Pooh mostly. 3w
ElizaMarie When I read this prompt, I initially thought of La Llorona. I know this book is going to have a part in this story - I am eager to read. Initially, it just scared me. She kills kids! But now, I feel like the kids weren't children per se, but more of an extension of herself. I feel sorrow for her, anger for her pain. Also, grew up with stories about Santa Muerte and how mainstream media misunderstands our flaca. 3w
ElizaMarie @TheBookHippie Although I liked Disney, I didn't aspire to be the princess. I was always drawn to the villains, their story, their history. My favorite Disney movie was Alice in Wonderland, which didn't have the girl-lives-for-guy aspect of it. I agree, I felt the whole “your only worth is a man to love“ really hurt girls. 3w

Cuilin I related too much with all the fears associated with “a disrupted relationship with the wildish force in the psyche” unfortunately. But at least I know what I need to work on. I loved the definition of wild as that which is natural and authentic. I‘m working on it! 3w
TheBookHippie I have I guess the opposite problem women hate me because I am wild. It reads as intimidating a lot. I had quite a feral childhood and summer camp in woods, I do not discount that for me being of the wild. (edited) 3w
TheBookHippie @Cuilin Fear is interesting. 3w

dabbe My mom was the wildest of women IMHO. She divorced my dad when NOBODY did that (I was the only kid in my 4th grade whose parents were divorced). She never remarried and taught us that we didn't need ANY man in order to live/succeed/be happy--it was all on US to create a meaningful life. I didn't have as rough a childhood as most people, and I know I got lucky with my mom. When she saw me turn into a pansy with my first husband ... ⬇️ 3w
dabbe (because that's how his parents behaved and it seemed the only way to “get along), she gave me a rough-talking to about not being my true self, basically asking me, “Where are you? What did you do with Denise?“ Over the years, I vacillate between those two Denises. I'm hoping to go full wild again after reading this book. I've already come out of my shell a wee bit here on Litsy. We'll see. 🤔 3w
Chrissyreadit @Cuilin It‘s challenging- i‘m not sure about your experience but so many woman are taught not to trust their wild side- because it threatens the status quo- then there is the fear of rejection- I‘m glad you are seeking your most genuine wild self 💛 3w
Chrissyreadit @dabbe wow! your mom sounds fearless and ferocious! Love that! 3w
Chrissyreadit I fear that my wild side was lost when i got married and had children. it‘s been a journey for sure. i know catholic guilt and community guilt had a lot to do with it. 3w
Chrissyreadit @TheBookHippie it‘s good to be fierce! 3w
TheBookHippie @dabbe I love your mom! 3w
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit keeps one alive. 3w
dabbe @TheBookHippie NOT this woman! You are one of the main people I attribute to getting me out of my shell. TBH, I would have never had the courage to fly alone to Canada, and worst yet, try to get through Customs back to my own country. I hadn't traveled sin 1998, and I was TERRIFIED. Then, I though of you and realized I needed to do this. Not for you. For me. You taught me that we have to feed ourselves first before we can be a help to others. 🖤 3w
dabbe @TheBookHippie She would have AD♥️RED you. 🖤🤍🩶 3w
dabbe @Chrissyreadit She was. A hard act to follow. 🖤🤍🩶 3w
TheBookHippie @dabbe I‘m so glad you did it it‘s so freeing and empowering. 😭😭😭😭 3w
TheBookHippie @dabbe ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️ next realm maybe will meet up. 3w
TheBookHippie @Chrissyreadit the not to trust your instinct is so dangerous for women. 3w
dabbe @TheBookHippie Would love to. 🖤🤍🩶 3w
ElizaMarie @Dabbe - Your mother, wow! What a woman! Also, so proud of you! Flying to a different country on your own, dealing with the world as it is today, it's a lot, and you proved you have what it takes! 3w
ElizaMarie @Dabbe @ChrissyReadIt - I understand the duality of self. I, too, became a whole different person during my first marriage. The stuff I allowed into my life at that time - wow. Who was I? I remember my abuela telling me to toughen up. To leave. To grow. And I resisted because I was stuck in this “what should a good Catholic do“. I am so lucky to have survived the divorce (literally), and now with a man who -- I can honestly say, loves ⬇️ 3w
ElizaMarie and respects the rough edges of me. I hope this book (and more importantly this group of #BadAssWildWomen) help me to recover some of what I lost. (edited) 3w
ElizaMarie @TheBookHippie, I am constantly in awe of how amazing you are! And this is only through the post I read!? Women may be intimidated by you - but your kindness bridges that gap! 3w
ElizaMarie @Cuilin I thought the definition was perfect too! I am here to work on the “fear“ and growth with you! 3w
TheBookHippie @ElizaMarie I‘m so glad you‘re reading with us!! And thank you. ♥️ I hope you get back you. 3w
Chrissyreadit @ElizaMarie it‘s amazing at how much more powerful Catholic guilt was than catholic love. I stayed in a horrible dangerous marriage for the same reason. I‘m so glad you found someone to fully love all the parts of you ❤️ 3w
dabbe @Chrissyreadit @ElizaMarie My first husband was Jewish, so I had the pressure of becoming Jewish and not Christian. He wasn't physically abusive but was definitely verbally so. I so get the “go along to get along“ philosophy of survival, but I am so glad we're out of those marriages and on to being our true, wild selves. 🧡🩶💜 3w
Chrissyreadit @dabbe 😘😘😘 3w
lil1inblue I always felt like a bit of a feral child. I spent so much time outside and my imagination would go wild. But I was also sexually abused as a child. As that continued I feel like I lost that wild spirit. A lot of it was because of fear. A lot of it was gaslit out of me. It took a long time and a lot of healing for me to regain that wild and fierce spirit. It's still hard to hold onto sometimes, but I'm fortunate to have women around me to help! 3w
lil1inblue @Cuilin So much fear! I related to that a lot, as well. 💓 3w
Cuilin @dabbe @lil1inblue @Chrissyreadit @thebookhippie @ElizaMarie I think we‘re all going to get so much out of this book. I‘m in a safe space and couldn‘t be in a better group of women for this. Thank you all for such honest answers. You‘re all amazing. I need to be braver. 🩷 (edited) 3w
TheBookHippie @lil1inblue I‘m so so sorry. I am a survivor of severe mental, emotional, physical abuse and a victim of rape. I‘m always around if you need a safe space. social@bookhippie.com 3w
dabbe @lil1inblue OMG, I am soooo sorry for the young girl in you. I have no words except 🧡🩶💜. How strong and brave you are to have found a way THROUGH. I'm glad you have women around you to help, and we're here, too! #badwolfbitches unite! 3w
lil1inblue @thebookhippie @dabbe Thank you. That means a lot - more than I can express. I debated about whether to share, but I can't really explore my wild without acknowledging it. And this felt like a safe space. 💓💓💓 We are all indeed #badwolfbitches! 2w
dabbe @lil1inblue You are COMPLETELY safe here. And thank you for sharing something so difficult. I think we're all not only going to learn a lot together, but we're going to grow together. #badwolfbitches! 💜🩶🧡 2w
Chrissyreadit @lil1inblue Sharing is bravery and trusting in safety! the identities we choose are part of our internal safety plan- here‘s to feeling safe enough to explore your wild!!!!! 😘💛💛💛 2w

Welcome to the discussion of the intro!!! Add comments here- but also feel free to create a discussion post as well if you have a question or thought you want to have engagement with, just remember to tag everyone.

dabbe The calm woman in me doesn't want to brag, but the wild one will shout to the rooftops: the main literary course for my freshmen honors curriculum was teaching the archetypes: archetypal story patterns (Hero's Quest, Fall from Innocence ...), archetypal settings (forest vs. civilaztion, etc.), and archetypal characters (the damsel in distress, the hero, the sidekick, the villain) ... ⬇️ 3w
dabbe ... All forms of literature were then read/annotated/discussed in reference to these archetypes: myths, fables, folklore, fairy tales, poems, short stories, novels, the list goes on. Teaching them that these stories in our collective unconscious are BEGGING to be told over and over again was the highlight of my career. Teaching comparative literature is also what made this Christian an agnostic. Talk about being life-changing. 3w

dabbe @Chrissyreadit You know I'll probably be able to shout something! But you're our guide, m'dear. Fabulous and thought-provoking questions, too! You made me thing! On a hygge day! 😍 3w
dabbe I found notes I had kept from one of my freshmen groups as they were preparing to their exam over archetypes, motifs, and symbols. I was quite impressed with their work. If you'd like a look, here's the link:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QWzChLZ4ACAkIMSz8mFf8aKIV8TACXiN9lLcbIjp-_w/...

Not bad for 13-14-year olds!
3w
ElizaMarie @Dabbe and @ChrissyReadIt - I am truly lucky that I am in your more than capable hands while we navigate this book! I am excited to learn and grow with y'all.

I feel like I never really thought about archetypes. Like subconsiously, I know them when I see them, but I never really thought to think about it, explore it, frame conclusions based on them.
3w
dabbe @ElizaMarie @Chrissyreadit It's so easy to just bury them in our struggle to get through our daily lives. Once our basic needs are met (food, water, shelter) ... then we want more and want to learn more about ourselves. That's where the archetypes come in. I am excited to explore this more in depth with all of you as well! 🧡💜🧡
3w
lil1inblue @dabbe I love all of this! I've always been drawn to myths/fables/oral traditions. I would have ADORED your class. I love seeing similar archetypes show up in different cultural folk tales and myths. 3w
dabbe @lil1inblue Aww, thank you. I put everything I had into that class, and I do miss teaching it. If you want to join us for this book, let @Chrissyreadit know. the intro was fabulous! 🧡💜💛 3w

And so our journey begins! Feel free to comment here and on your own page and on each others pages as we begin this community of Wild Women reading. Over the next week consider posting about A particular segment you read and why it spoke to you. I am tagging everyone who requested so far- please tag the group in your posts so we can all participate- and feel free to add more on storygraph! This week is all about the intro!

Chrissyreadit A couple out of many lines that spoke to me : “Fear to set out ones imperfect work before it is an opus”- I have so much fear that has held me back professionally! 4w
Chrissyreadit I love Jungian archetypes. I love how vital it is that the stories we tell ourselves serve so many purposes and how we use them is vital to how we see ourselves in our own stories! I hope that I can learn more about how to use stories and my own story to grow and learn and experience 💛I can‘t wait to hear more of everyone‘s thoughts after reading each section. 4w
ElizaMarie I am almost done with the intro (and at work now so I don‘t have a direct quote but —) language is so powerful. The stories we tell ourselves, the labels we give ourselves matter so much- I know you, as a clinician, know how person first language has been proven invaluable. 4w

Chrissyreadit @GingerAntics this week to read intro- i‘m trying out posting thoughts/questions to use to reflect as you read or answer after - next sunday i will consider day one of part one- so this week is just about reading and reflecting on intro. 4w
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit I haven‘t started yet, so I don‘t necessarily know what that means, but I‘m just going with the flow! Intro it is. You got it! 4w

As we begin exploring this book together - I am considering how the image of “women” has been portrayed and changed over my life so far. Would you consider sharing a post with this quote and image of women that speaks to you? This is an image by Kiki Suarez- it has been a favorite of mine since college and is called “Many Strong and Beautiful Women”

Chrissyreadit I will check back in with goal of 1 section a week- starting this Sunday. Jump in wherever you are though. I will post about Chapter 1 beginning next Sunday, to give everyone a chance to get the book and read the intro and settle in. I‘m so excited to do this together ❤️ 1mo

CPE states “I‘ll tell you right now, the doors to the world of Wild Women are few but precious…. If you have a scar…if you have an old, old story…if you love the water and sky so much…. If you yearn for a deeper..full…sane life… that is a door” What answers, understandings, affirmations do you seek in the books and stories you read?

DieAReader 💖💖💖 1mo
Chrissyreadit I read a LOT of fantasy! where women have power, respect, opportunity… 1mo
lil1inblue I love books and stories that don't necessarily provide answers, but that provoke thought. Things that ask questions. I also like reading about experiences outside my own. 1mo
See All 10 Comments
ImperfectCJ I'm not sure if I ask much from my books in terms of showing me a specifically woman-oriented viewpoint, but I gravitate towards stories that portray complex and nuanced characters, especially those that are realistic (i.e., flawed, neither all good nor all evil). I've been disappointed in a lot of fantasy as even in space or made-up worlds, the same gender stereotypes usually apply. I'd be interested in recs for books that break this. 1mo
TheBookHippie @ImperfectCJ have you read any Chloe Gong? 1mo
ImperfectCJ @TheBookHippie I haven't. It looks like she has a few series...which would you recommend? The newest (Coldwire) looks most appealing by its description, but is maybe more sci-fi than fantasy? 1mo
TheBookHippie @ImperfectCJ https://thechloegong.com/secretshanghai/ I would do this one. It always feels it takes a bit but then you‘re in. I adored these so much all of them. 4w
TheBookHippie @ImperfectCJ I think you‘re right about Coldwire but feel free to join us to find out we‘re reading it together in January. If you look at our hashtag maybe you can get a feel #CHLOEGONGREADALONG we read the first book of hers for #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD and then went to a different group to just read all her books. I hope that makes sense. 4w
ImperfectCJ @TheBookHippie I might join y'all for the Coldwire readalong (if I'm not overwhelming myself with too many buddy reads already...), but I'm still a little uncertain about the Secret Shanghai series...it's described as romantic fantasy, and I didn't like ACOTAR, so I'm pretty leery of romantic fantasy. 4w
TheBookHippie @ImperfectCJ I don‘t read romance as a rule 🤣 fantasy rarely. It really is off my normal reading. 😊😅 I didn‘t even try ACOTAR because no. 🤣🫣 4w

I LOVED school- High School, College and Grad school! (I was a huge nerd )
I loved so much about High School-
1. I was able to attend Close Up 3 times - a program in DC to actively learn about govt,
2. I participated in The National Conf of Christian and Jews- it was life changing.
3. I was very active in Student Govt and Track by Sr year Captain of my team and President of my class.
My HS had 6000 students.

TheLudicReader 6000! Students?! What the heck! 1mo
tpixie Amazing experiences. 6000 students! I‘m glad you found a nitch to feel at home. 1mo
dabbe 6000 students? That's an entire town! W😍WZA! Love these answers! What was your best even in track? I was fairly decent at the hop, step, jump--or do they now call it the triple jump? 😂 Thanks for sharing. 💛🤎🧡 1mo

Today‘s #hyggehourreadathon reminder brought to you from the view under my Crepe Myrtle. Everyone is welcome to join us! Today i am thinking about my worries for Palestine, Undocumented Human Beings, the future of my health care and student loan repayment and am grateful to have books to read, a calm space to sit and community that also believes science is real, no human is illigal and book bans are fascist. #bbb #antifaboookclub

#mondaymood on Wednesday because it‘s also #WDNCW Thankful for these women! If you are not following ashleytheebarroness on IG I highly recommend her- I am learning so much and her voice and cadence are amazing. How did we get here? read Half The Sky- it‘s an amazing book that shares the way limiting women limits the world. I have not read this book by Allende but am getting the audio today- buddy read anyone? #thislitelightofmineimgonnaletitshine
