How do you stage a mutiny when you‘re only awake a few days in a century, when your tiny handful of co-conspirators get reshuffled every time they‘re called on deck? How do you plot against an enemy that never sleeps, that has all those empty ages to grind its brute-force way down every avenue, stumble across every careless clue you might have left behind?

What a great concept! I enjoyed every second of this hard-sci fi novella.

“Mauro‘s work is a reminder that, contrary to what many believe, the most gifted and innovative chef is not necessarily the one who transforms the ingredients, but perhaps the one who most intensely restores their flavors.”

This book was an absolute delight from start to finish. At only 100 pages, it tells the story of how a young man becomes a chef through the eyes of someone that knows him.

I read The Poet X earlier this year, so when I saw this book at the library, I just knew I had to read it. I found the book on #Libby and the author reads the book just like she did with the first one. This book didn't disappoint! It's a great story with a diverse cast of characters. It reminded me of my school days, except my cooking course wasn't as exciting. I look forward to Acevedo's next book

A creepy tale about family dynamics from Scottish crime novelist Denise Mina. This is the first work I've read from Mina, and I really enjoyed it. I'll definitely pick up Hellblazer, and it was a great introduction to the graphic mystery genre.

“There were still a few veils of mist drifting over the ground, but wherever they parted she glimpsed streaks of gold, which must have been water but looked like pure light.”

Alright, let me explain why I think this book is only so-so. It‘s beautifully written and the imagery is wonderful, but I have an issue with the main character. Continued in comments....

MirrorMask The protagonist is Virginia, an orphan that comes to stay at Salt Winds during WWII. The book is from her perspective when she was a little girl ages 10-12 and as an old woman in 2015. Generally, the age of the protagonist has no bearing on weather I enjoy a book or not, but had the book been told from Lorna‘s perspective I would have loved it even more.
6y
MirrorMask I had the same problem with Atonement, both children let their jealousy, vindictiveness, and naivety monumentally alter the course of someone‘s life. 6y
monalyisha That‘s fair! Virginia was a tricky narrator, for sure! (She was the right protagonist for me, though.) 6y

MirrorMask @monalyisha @TheLibrarian I heard back from @Elma she has just sent out the first book to @TheLibrarian and she will send out the second one once she gets a chance to read it. So, I will go ahead and send the book I have to her. I stocked up on sugar free chocolate so I'm really glad I can send the rest to her as I don't know anyone who likes it. 6y
monalyisha @MirrorMask Perfect! How do you feel about the possibility of this next book being sent to you late? If you'd really rather have it on-time, don't be shy about saying so! But I just started grad school after having been absent from the academic world for 10 years; I'm kind-of nervous about getting my assignments done. Since it started on Monday, I've neglected reading “for fun.“ If I can avoid feeling pressured to finish “Melmoth,“ it would help. 6y

It steadied Ash, and she extended her hand across the distance. Kaisa came down the steps, took her hand, and said, ‘Yes.”

Wonderful retelling of Cinderella!

“We embrace those things that make us unique or odd. For only in these things can we locate and then develop our most individual abilities.”

This was a really quick, fun read! I really liked all the characters and the setting. Sunny finds out that she‘s a Leopard person (a person capable of magic) thanks to a friend who believes she must be magic because of her albinism.

Prompt 11: Includes African Mythology #SFFTBRChallenge @DuckOfDoom

DuckOfDoom I loved this! I plan on using the second book for the same prompt 😀 I just don't know how this can be compared to Harry Potter. It's so different 6y
MirrorMask @DuckOfDoom It's compared to Harry Potter??? They're not very similar at all. LOL 6y

“We all are born with burdens. Some of us more than others.”

I debated whether I should make this a Pick or not, but I decided that the good outweighed the bad. Onye is Ewu, a child of rape, and instead of being treated with compassion, everyone around her hates that she exists. A child born from violence, can only be violent being their theory. I loved the worldbuilding and the stories from the Great Book. However, her "friends" weren't great.

“I am me because I choose to be me. I am what I want. Some people say you have to find yourself. Not I. I believe we create ourselves to be what we want.”

This was a very enjoyable audiobook. Alosha is a great character that is kickass most of the time but has some vulnerability. I‘ll definitely read the sequel.
