January: A Woman Judge's Season of Disillusion | Marie Corbett
157 posts | 1 to read
An intimate look at the life of a female Superior Court judge, January entwines two stories - one personal, one professional - over one challenging, transformative year. In the month of January, The Honourable Marie Corbett is adjudicating criminal trials on childhood sex abuse and other difficult cases. At the same time, she faces the imminent death from cancer of her closest friend, Anne Armstrong Gibson. Recently widowed, Anne must prepare her two young sons for life without her. Marie travels daily between hospital ward and courtroom, reflecting on her own role as mother, wife, and trial judge. Recognizing the limitations of the criminal justice system, devastated by the death of her friend, Marie embarks on a path of self-discovery and faces a choice between civic duty and the life she wants to live.

Here is my month in pixels!! You can't see my key very well, but I just did a rainbow so the closer to the red end of the rainbow, the lower the pages for the day, while close to the violet end of the spectrum is more pages. This tracker is supposed to be for moods, but I figure how many pages I read in a day kinda reflects my mood as well 😂

My semi-tentative January #TBR Right now the top 2.5 rows are pretty solid because of #buddyreads #readalongs & challenges, a book tour & my virtual foodie book club pick. I am a moody reader so the rest is up subject to change.

Looking to read along with #SundayBuddyRead #ALSpine #AuldLangSpine #PemberLittens #DiverseCozy & #SeriesLove2023 so far in January

My 5 stars were The power of the Dog and both audiobooks (The Count of Montecristo and The Sandman with a full cast on Audible)

I was very lucky, starting this year off with books I loved! There were a couple that I bailed on or had to push through but overall I would recommend just about all of this month‘s reads. Sadly though, things got crazy this weekend and I have only clocked about 8/20 hours for #20in4 to close out the month. Looking forward to the next #BookSpin to get me excited for February!

Sticking with my emoji rating scheme. Got to 9 books this month! Most in many months. Eleanor and Park and Beartown were my comfort rereads. The Obama book is amazing and a must read. I‘m the minority who didn‘t really like The Grace Year (fine, but I don‘t get the hype.) Girl woman other had great parts but sooo many characters to try to keep straight. Migrations was good but again I felt didn‘t quite reach my expectations. The others were meh.

Marni I love your emoji ratings! I may have to steal that idea. 2y

⭐️ JANUARY WRAP-UP ⭐️ - Generally, I was pleased with my reading this month. I made some significant progress toward some of my goals, including my backlist, BOTM backlist, and Tournament of Books reading.⠀

I did notice that I read A LOT of romance this month. I think that‘s for several reasons, one of which is definitely that when I‘m stressed, romance novels are the reading equivalent of comfort food for me.

UnabridgedPod See any favorites? What‘s “comfort food” reading for you?⠀

Some stats:⠀

⭐️29 Books Read⠀
➡️ 6 Audiobooks⠀
➡️ 9 eBooks⠀
➡️ 13 Print Books⠀

5 BOTM Backlist⠀
5 Tournament of Books Shortlist⠀

2 Nonfiction⠀
8 Romance⠀

1 Graphic Novel⠀
4 YA/Middle Grade

January was a decent reading month, I hope I‘ll be able to keep it up and that the year gets better! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The Last Sanctuary in Aleppo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Most of them ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Several

Tove_Reads Have to say it‘s harder to follow the #Murder2020 than I thought. I read a lot of non fiction and do I count some or not? War, dictatorship etc. When there isn‘t a murder to be solved per se 🤔 3y
gradcat @Tove_Reads I‘m having the same problem. But since you put Jessica Fletcher into the post, I decided on the more mysterious side of murder literature. For example, to me “true crime,” which is nonfiction, would count, but if the book is not primarily about the murder, then I‘m not counting. But I guess it‘s up to the individual reader? 🤷🏽‍♀️ 3y
