Cute and easy mystery in a bookstore in the Scottish highlands— what‘s not to love? Will you be shocked and staying up until 2:00 AM to learn what happens next? No. But will you be engaged enough with a cozy mystery that spirits you away to a romanticized version of bookshops and Scotland? Yes. 7/10

Molly MacRae is a new author for me. Thank you so much, @robinb , for sending this book my way. I enjoyed both the characters and the Scottish bookshop setting. I found the motive for the murder to be a little thin, but otherwise this book is a pick. I‘ll definitely read others in this series.

#LittensDressedInBlood #Day9 For #plaid what better book than this one? The first in a cozy crime series, it‘s set in a bookshop in Scotland & is brilliant! I really have to get the next three books, it‘s snarky, it‘s funny & it‘s full of mystery & murder. Loved it❤️

This book definitely qualifies for the moniker "cozy mystery". I never once felt that anything was high stakes. It was, in fact, less than compelling. Which is difficult to achieve when dealing with murder.

So here are some choices @Allylu @DarcysMom @Roary47 . I struggled with posting choices now or waiting until I opened my cozyswap box. Let me know what you think.

Allylu Okay. I like 1) If Walls Could Talk, 2) Plaid and Plagiarism, 3) Murder in an Irish Village and 4) Murder at the Mansion. 3y
Roary47 If walls could talk looks the most interesting. Murder in an Irish village would be my second choice. 3y
DarcysMom They all look good to me. So, I will be happy with whatever you choose. 3y
Allylu If Walls Could Talk sounds like it will be very punny! What‘s your choice, @tdrosebud ? 3y

I enjoyed this book, but it‘s definitely a “cozy mystery,” not a crime thriller. Many suspects stir—and confuse—the plot. Much clever dialogue ensues. The characters are fun though, and I‘ve already got the second book in the series, so another evening read with Janet, Christine, et al and a cup of tea is in my future.

A bookshop mystery? Set in Scotland? I‘m so there. I started this book in the Fall though, and I haven‘t finished it yet. I‘m a parallel reader extraordinaire, so I got distracted by other books . . . I like it! I may have to reread some of it at this point though. It‘s the first book that introduced me to the #cozymystery genre. Speaking of genres, I‘ve discovered one called “rural romance.” Not in my wheelhouse, but not judging. 🧡📚

I really enjoyed this one! A classic cozy mystery!

Four women start new careers as booksellers & tea shop owners in a small town in Scotland. As they are learning the ropes from the previous owners (before they move to sunny Portugal), a murder occurs. The tale of why the woman was murdered, and whether she was even the intended victim, is woven throughout the story of Janet, Tallie, Christine, and Summer making a new life in their new home.

I love when a student throws a fit about failing an essay, insisting they didn‘t plagiarize, but typing their first sentence into Google pulls up the entire paper.

Lauram 🤦🏼‍♀️ 5y
JoScho Yeah I like it when they write their name on my table and I bust them for it and they say it wasn‘t them. Who else wrote your name?!? Do better kids! 5y
ravenlee It‘s a...um...coincidence? Similar inspiration? 5y
See All 16 Comments
ravenlee Seriously, though - I was accused of plagiarism in college, but the prof said he didn‘t have enough to prove it. My problem was that I couldn‘t prove my roommate copied sections of my paper, so it was defend us both or both fail the paper. Had to defend her sorry a**. 5y
CouronneDhiver I would never have had the guts to pull that off... was the fake essay a good one, at least? 5y
OrangeMooseReads I was too scared of getting caught to ever even try to plagiarize. My senior year of high school I took a college writing class and the professor for that class told us we could copy and paste our entire research paper 🤦🏼‍♀️🤷‍♀️ learned so much in that class 🙅🏼‍♀️ 5y
LibrarianRyan What tipped you off it was fake. I always wondered how teachers caught this. 5y
Rachel.Rencher @LibrarianRyan When I was in school, teachers started running essays through an online database that was integrated into the class websites. It would be able to compare it to essays online and other student's papers that had been turned in. I gave a friend my paper as an example like 4 years after I'd taken a class, and the teacher noticed that she'd copied my intro. 5y
LibrarianRyan @Rachel.Rencher that‘s kind of cool. 5y
Tamra Bah! You can always tell when the writing style is several standards above what they normally write. College students try to pull this off - even grad students. How embarrassing. 5y
JacintaMCarter @LibrarianRyan We have a database that helps us catch it. 5y
julesG @LibrarianRyan Since I've only ever graded papers of English as a Second Language students, it was easy to spot the plagiarised papers. They were just too good. Too well-written flawless grammar, sophisticated words,... 5y
DrSabrinaMoldenReads I had a bad experience with this as a freshman undergrad when my professor accused me a plagiarism assuming I certainly could not write that well. It was so scary to me as a young girl. He had no proof, of course, and kept insisting for me to say from where I copied it. He always gave me Bs. (edited) 5y
JacintaMCarter @Joyfulmimi I always double and triple check before I call someone out for plagiarism. But considering that I found the entire paper on Google, this one was pretty obvious. I‘m sorry, though, that you had a crappy professor like that. He sounds like just a generally shitty teacher. 5y
Centique Man that‘s so ridiculous - the whole thing was on the internet? What a silly kid! 5y

While this was an OK read, it was just too slow for me. I found myself not that interested in the characters or the outcome, and I was in no hurry to pick it back up after having put it down...which is usually my marker for a really good book. I‘m sure others will appreciate its quirkiness and Scottish locale, but it just wasn‘t my cup of tea.

BookNAround ☹️ I felt the same way. 6y
robinb @BookNAround I felt bad for giving this review because the writing is fine, just not my preference. And I‘m thinking if this is considered a “cozy” mystery (?) then maybe those just aren‘t for me. I don‘t think I‘ve ever read one that was labeled as a “cozy”. 6y

A Scottish setting will always get my attention, however I wasn't as blown away by this story as I wanted to be. I'm hoping the series gets stronger. The mystery was good, but the primary characteristics of the quartet of women who are the crime-solvers kind of melded into one another; and there was a lot of info tossed around too. But there's plenty of potential though and so I'll pick up the next one and see what shenanigans come next.

This was my first #cozymystery and for the most part, my thought was: 'can someone arrest these women for obstruction of justice and impeding an investigation??' It got a little on my nerves, but I'm also a hardcore mystery and police procedural reader.

This was a cute read, with a fairly unexciting finish. The reveal was glossed over. If you are spending an entire book on a mystery, don't gloss over the ending.

⭐️⭐️

Bostonmomx2 I have a really hard time with cozies. I come from a law enforcement family so suspending reality that the cops cant solve the crime but the lady who owns the bakery can....always leaves me shaking my head. But for fun, light, quick reads, they're entertaining 😀😀 (edited) 7y

Between a pick and a so-so. A good start to a cozy series, it was a fun read. Some quibbles - I sometimes got main and secondary characters confused, and there seemed to be a strange use of the word "rats" that popped up more often the further into the book I got. But these are minor things, and I enjoyed the few hours I spent reading this last night. Wonder what book 2 will be like - out in January!

EvieBee As in, "rats...I broke a nail!"? 7y

LauraBrook @EvieBee84 A couple of times. Started out w one of the MCs calling her ex a rat, and then rumors of rats in a house, and then asking neighbors at work about rats, and... it just kept going. Maybe no one else noticed the weird instances it kept popping up, but it annoyed me and kept pulling me out of the story. Not a deal breaker, but still. 7y
