The mazy house on the cliffs near Dover has been home to generations of Silver women - and it never lets them go. Reeling from the sudden death of her mother Lily, Miranda Silver is newly resident. I was pretty ambivalent about the book from about page 6. The formatting is weird, I had no idea what was going on for most of it, and I didn‘t care about the characters. But I wanted to finish it as it was for book club.
When the house used the mannequin to attack the housekeeper, I gave up trying to get through it.

Starting this book for my horror book club and I cannot tell you the dread I'm feeling, not because it is scary, but because I remember how Boy, Snow, Bird ended and I'm worried about this book doing something similar.

Eliot & Miranda Silver are twins who just lost their mother & are living in a haunted house. Miranda is mentally unwell &has an eating disorder. told from 3 different perspectives, one being the house itself, & tells true story of the past 4 generations of Silver women. The house thinks it‘s the best one to protect the Silver women, even if that means kidnapping them within the walls to keep them safe & luring the men outside & locking the doors.

A very interesting niche genre, let‘s talk about isolation horror! 💀

1. An island hotel, surrounded by waves and storms. ⛈
2. Tagged!
3. The knowledge that no one can come for you, that you are alone against whatever horrors are there with you.

#21DaysofHorror Day 19. This is one of the best haunted house novels I‘ve ever read. The story is told from different perspectives and one of them happens to be the house itself. We follow Miranda and her twin Eliot and their dad, Luc, as they grieve their mother and wife. They live in a very sinister house that at one point describes its killing of one of the family‘s relatives. It is one of the scariest things I have ever read.

vivastory I've read a few by Oyeyemi and this remains my favorite. Great choice! 3y

Finished my first #Readathon book! Melancholy and spooky. I felt like the whole reading experience had me teetering on the edge of discomfort. The house in this book isn't so much haunted as it is alive. It's a monstrous character who keeps the Silver women for itself. It also *is* the women. There's also a delightful amount of queerness and interrogation of the UK's racist and anti-immigrant/refugee ideologies, plus Oyeyemi's beautiful writing.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ So I liked this book better than this author‘s latest book Gingerbread. It was way sadder than I expected but the ending was pretty spooky. I think the eating disorder problem was the scariest part for me. If you‘re looking for sad scary then I recommend. If you‘re looking for Halloween scary this one doesn‘t hit that note. This was my #bookspinbingo No. 6 and it was on my #screamathon list.

14. A Book with a Color in the Title

It‘s not so much that the house is haunted as much as it is alive...

•An altogether eerie and unsettling atmosphere (Hello, Poe).
•Prose so poetic it borders on lyrical.
•Bewitched from page one.

Helen Oyeyemi knows that ghost stories aren‘t just for kids.

Based on this book and Gingerbread, I think Helen Oyoyemi would be very interesting to talk to about food. There's a lot here about nurturing someone vs consuming them and how fear can turn a place of protection and safety into a prison. It's also possible there's an allegory for systemic racism and/or isolationism, but I'll have to mull it over some more.

So this morning was a 12-mile bike ride with my spouse followed by stretching, meditation, and now a little reading and a snack that is not inspired by the main character's preferences.

Pros: the writing is gorgeous and unsettling
Cons: each character‘s POV has them living a different version of the same story but none ever seem to come together at the end. It feels unfinished on every account.

@Reggie this quote!! White people (me incl) think everybody is living in the “same house” having the same experience - oblivious to POC experience, who in this house are always in serving positions etc. House is full of dead white ppl - Lily‘s inheritance is both property and generations of bitterness. Property/privilege comes with the hatred attached!😨 Really thought provoking. And I think Miri must be responsible for stoning Tijana‘s cousin.

Reggie What a deep dive!!! I spent hours in a funk over this book because I really couldn‘t process it all together. I knew Oyeyemi was black. But then I found out her parents were Nigerian immigrants who came to the U.K. And then I thought how angry this book was. How this was her saying, This is how you treat us!!!! And your comments like this make me want to go reread this because I missed a lot. This is a really great point, Paula! I think it was👇🏼 4y
Reggie Anna who was haunting the immigrants because Eliot shows the picture of Miranda to Tijana and the cousin, he says, no it‘s not that girl, it looks like her but it‘s not her. I just really thought that her hate of all the “outsiders” was so strong combined with the house allowed her to manifest herself outside the property. 4y
Reggie One of the most scariest things I read in this book is what the house does to Jennifer. Combined with the memory Miranda has that Lily gets so angry about saying it never happened. The one where the grandmother is in her room and spreads blood all over her face from fingers that look like they‘ve been chewed on. *shivers* 4y
See All 14 Comments
Centique @Reggie yes! And then when Ore finds that the real Miri is inside Anna. It‘s like Anna and the house are one and they‘re consuming Miri and she‘s trying to fight back. I really wanted to know if they found her body in that trap door room. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4y
Centique @Reggie and yes to that too! Jennifer wandering through the house forever. This would make a great movie. 4y
Reggie And despite all this I really thought there was lovely moments in here with the family. Like the whole bird story in Eliot‘s pocket. Or when they‘re reading in their father‘s room while he watches tv. 4y
Reggie Yes, and that the house or whoever‘s skin that was was a soucouyant. I was shouting at Ore to rub the skin with salt and pepper. 4y
Reggie Yes, I would go watch it! 4y
Centique @Reggie I totally agree. Part of me really wanted a happy ending for them - but that would have been the stereotype Oyeyemi was turning upside down. So glad Ore got out of there! 4y
Reggie P.s. Eliot never went to Africa right? Cause he has those photos of Miranda from that bridge while she‘s at school. 4y
Centique @Reggie yeah I think so. And his girlfriend chopped her hair like Miri‘s cos she knew he was obsessed with her. 4y
Reggie Omg!!!! I didn‘t even think of that!! But it makes so much sense. I really need to stop ploughing through books and sit in them a bit. 4y
Reggie Thank you for giving me the bookclub experience on this book I never would have gotten by myself, Paula! ❤️😘 4y

This disturbing tale of a haunted house and a twin suffering an eating disorder stutters and jumps between 3 POVs - the twin brother, the college girlfriend and the house itself. The effect is to leave you unsure of what is real, much like the people in the house. It can be confusing - I had to reread sections to be sure of who was speaking - but Oyeyemi writes like a poet, with more emphasis on sound and imagery than on creating clear lines. ⬇️

Centique If this book was a movie it would definitely be an arthouse movie! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Important themes around racism in here but that would give away the plot so I‘ll talk about it under a spoiler tag below. (edited) 4y
Centique There is an important thread in the book on the way that racism poisons the very structures around this white family and while “protecting” them (which ends up withering them and turning them monstrous) it is toxic to anyone non-white. @Reggie I have to go back now and reread what those little girls said when they left the house! 4y

At first I thought, what does all this racism and xenophobia have to do with this book about a haunted house. But after watching Francina Simone‘s video on Being Black. I have to say this is a book about racism dressed as a haunted house story. This is also Oyeyemi‘s rejection of the white princess “everything has to turn out ok for her” myth. This is about how hate will sour your house and will ruin futures. The oppression in here! Pick!!!👇🏼

Reggie Since the protests, I have been watching a lot of Black booktube videos because even though I feel like I‘m a certain type of person it is not enough. vivastory Also, how fng talented is she?! She already has several great works under her belt and she's only 35!! 4y

Barely on page 10 and I have no idea what‘s going on except that I love the writing. The personification of words- like “please” is a kid in someone‘s mouth acting like a petulant child saying,”I don‘t wanna!!” Which for the word please itself is hilarious. And the impatient words on the bottom are a group of people who had been trapped in an elevator. Lol @Centique #WIFWBuddyRead

Billypar When I started reading Oyeyemi last year, she vaulted into my inner circle of favorite authors. That feeling of being pleasantly disoriented is one of the reasons I like her. You understand more as you proceed, but never too much so that it ruins the magical quality. 4y

Reggie @Billypar @readordierachel it‘s funny. I can read romance and don‘t feel bad about reading sex scenes but there are times I‘m reading about Eliot and Miri and Lily or with their dad and I feel like I‘m watching an extremely private family moment I have no business being a part of. Did ya‘ll ever feel that way? Still loving all that is Oyemi. -Reggie 4y
Billypar I think I know what you mean, though my memory is so poor for specific examples of anything I read over a month ago, lol. But one thing I admire about Oyeyemi's work is she can capture the essence of a small, intimate moment beautifully, even though none of her work would be classified as realism. It exists between realism and fantasy without feeling like either mode is compromised. 4y

Louise It so much depends on your mood! The Goldfinch is brilliant. The Night Circus creates a magical atmosphere. 5y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian @Louise I'm having trouble deciding what mood I'm in actually! Thanks for the notes. 5y
Jolynne I vote for White is for Witching only because I have not read it. 5y

Prairiegirl_reading The Night Circus is very atmospheric but the pace is slow. I gave up but so many people love it! If I were you I‘d go with Kushiel‘s Dart. 5y
CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian Decided to go with The Goldfinch. Thanks for the thoughts everyone! 5y
AlaMich Kushiel‘s Dart is great, as is Night Circus. 5y

Yes, yes, yes. I loved this. I didn't always have my bearings, a bit like standing on the deck of a ship, something always shifting beneath my feet. Don't expect clear answers or a tidy resolution. Do expect eeriness and atmosphere, unsettling imagery and intriguing characters, and a commentary on racism and xenophobia skillfully woven through it all. 5 ⭐ (Now I'm off to read everything else Oyeyemi has written 👋🏼)

readordierachel Thanks @billypar for selling this to me with your review a couple weeks back! 5y
monalyisha Everything I‘ve ever read by Oyeyemi has given me that unmoored feeling. Bravo for feeling comfortable with it (I‘m still working on it)! 5y
LauraJ I feel like I‘m under a spell when I read her books. 🖤 5y

readordierachel @monalyisha "unmoored" is a perfect word! Fortunately, I really enjoy that feeling. Drop me in the ocean and let me dog paddle in the general direction of the shore and I'm happy ? 5y
readordierachel @LauraJ Lovely way to describe it 🧡 Do you have a favorite of hers? 5y
monalyisha @readordierachel I definitely enjoy a degree of ambiguity, but she‘s like, NEXT LEVEL. 😅 5y
LauraJ @readordierachel probably the first book I read by her 5y

Tanisha_A Super review! Stacked! 👏 5y
readordierachel @Tanisha_A I hope you like it as much as I did! 5y
Billypar Glad you liked it! She's my top author discovery of the year. I'm thrilled that she's already written so many and, even though nothing is certain, she may write so many more based on how young she is. 5y
readordierachel @Billypar Yes, it's so nice when that happens! I can't believe she was just 19 when she published her first novel. Hope she does indeed write many more 🤞🏼 5y
Reggie Holy wow, what a great review!! I‘ve seen it around but always wondered. 5y
readordierachel @Reggie Thanks, Reggie! It was one of those books that just really clicked for me. I hope her other ones do too. 5y

Beware if you enter Oyeyemi's world. Not all who choose to stay at this eerie bed and breakfast with the Silver's will be scared. If you've read this author before, you'll already know this isn't really a horror novel all the time- she's got about 5 pots of thematic stews boiling at any point. But if you're like me and ideas and images are what scare you, then come in, make yourself comfortable. Don't worry about the whispers. And have an apple 🍎

batsy Nice review! You've already made me a bit nervous. No apple for me, thanks 😅 5y
Billypar @batsy Thanks! And, yeah, probably wise to decline 😁 5y
vivastory What a stellar review. I loved this one. I really need to read more Oyeyemi. 5y
Billypar @vivastory Thanks! I just started reading her this year, this one and Mr. Fox. I usually pace myself and read a single author gradually, but I think I'm going to make an exception and just keep buying and reading her stuff until I'm caught up. 5y

A lot of horror freaks me out, so I'm not much for #screamathon - but tor.com published a piece called 'Horror Recommendations for All Tolerance Levels' so I thought I might dip my toe into the spooky atmospheric end of the pool just a bit in honor of the Halloween season!

https://www.tor.com/2019/10/01/horror-recommendations-for-all-tolerance-levels/c...

vivastory Interesting list. Thanks for posting! Just FYI some of the recommendations are a bit off (ie Library at Mount char is definitely not a low tolerance read. It's very disturbing) 5y
cjk I concur with @vivastory about The Library at Mount Char- some of the scenes are very graphic. 5y
Mogoeg Thanks @ckj and @vivastory - she has an Elizabeth Hand novel somewhere in the middle and I once read one of her books at a guesthouse when there was nothing else around - this was 15 years ago and I‘m still scarred. I will proceed with caution! 5y
alisiakae #Screamathon is for all reading types! I only have one horror book on my pile, the rest are mild ghost stories, one cozy Halloween book, and a few witchy fantasy novels. 5y
Billypar Even though I'm in the high tolerance camp, the tagged book is on my list. I'm not in it for the scare factor as much as I just discovered Oyeyemi this year and think she's amazing. And the Shirley Jackson one is also coming up because it seems to be one of the most beloved books on Litsy I haven't read! Great article- love the concept of horror for all 👹 🙈 5y

#7covers7days Day 1

Thanks @merelybookish for the tag!

@tournevis not sure if you've already been tagged, but if you want to play, it's 7 covers in 7 days, no explanations needed, & tag someone new each day.

Leftcoastzen Pretty! 5y
merelybookish Her books always have beautiful covers! But this one is so striking! 5y
Billypar @merelybookish I have it slated for an October read, and the cover is making me extra excited for it, in spite of the popular advice ☺️ 5y

Another quiet morning brought to you by a tiny sleeping in 😁

I‘m not sure what I‘ll be reading over the holiday weekend but it‘ll be dark and creepy for sure!

This one has been in my plans for a very long time. Haunted house books are a favorite of mine and this one gets across the board great reviews!
