The Saturday Night Ghost Club
The Saturday Night Ghost Club: A Novel | Craig Davidson
110 posts | 92 read | 2 reading | 83 to read
An infectious novel from literary master craftsman Craig Davidson--the first major new work of literary fiction since his bestselling, Giller-shortlisted novel Cataract City. A charismatic cast of misfits, losers, and bruisers animate this winning novel set in Niagara Falls, a.k.a. Cataract City--a slightly seedy, slightly magical, slightly haunted place, where seemingly ordinary lives are steeped in secrets, desires, troubled histories, and the occasional splash of mayhem. Like Ilium, New York, in the novels of Kurt Vonnegut, or Castle Rock, New England, in the fiction of Stephen King--or even Hawkins, Indiana, in the Netflix sensation Stranger Things, Cataract City is an invented world where lost innocence mingles with the darker shades and sharper corners of humanity. Saturday Night Ghost Club is a short, irresistible, and bittersweet coming-of-age story about a small group of kids who, under the leadership of an eccentric uncle, spend one summer investigating the validity of local ghost stories and macabre urban myths--in almost every instance getting in way over their heads. With warmth, skill, and striking, cinematic imagery, and a rare gift for conjuring totally original, unexpected, and unforgettable set pieces and tableaus that strike the reader as immediately iconic--Davidson draws us into his gritty world, reminding us that life's strange intensity and occasional magic is all around us.

Actually loved this. Not as light as I thought it would be, which really worked for me. Lots of grief and confusion here.

Number 78 for #roll100 and this was great! Not what I expected but really enjoyed this sad coming of age story. Definitely reminiscent of Stephen King‘s works from a teenage POV, with some really poignant moments.

Sad book rather than spooky book.
Bittersweet mix of childhood nostalgia (imagination, adventures, making friends, first crush, ghost stories, standing up for yourself), and encountering grown up realities (mental health concerns, life threatening neural injuries/conditions, trauma and danger). 1/2

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 PROS: Good pacing, heavy foreshadowing that keeps you interested, and unique choice to discuss it from adult brain surgeon's point of view, connecting memories to medical cases.
CONS: Reveals are too much of a bummer to recommend the read.
Dove character comes a little too close to manic pixie dream girl.

⚠️ SA(?), suicide attempt

Looking for a Halloween read that isn't scary or gory, here it is. A moving, coming of age, family story. Jake, his misfit friends, and oddball uncle start a ghost club the summer of Jake's 12th Bday. They investigate local ghost stories, myths, and legends, and lose a little innocence along the way.

Also, who knew Nick Cutter had an alias? Actually I think NC is the alias, and Craig Davidson is his real name. 🤷‍♀️

Strong in 80s nostalgia and a definite quirky tale with interesting characters. You know that feeling of being on the outside, not quite fitting in? This book nails that childhood that many of us had. The ending was completely not what I was expecting.

This book became a lot darker than just a story about ghost stories. Jake loves to spend time with his Uncle Cal, who owns The Occultorium. One summer in the 1980s, Uncle Cal creates the Saturday Night Ghost Club, with his friend Lex, Jake, and Jake's friends Billy and Dove. They visit local sites that are supposedly haunted.

Ending was sad and overall book was not as scary I thought it would be. It was a quick and entertaining read and was spooky to me last night during a rainy Saturday night. If I knew that the scary bits were behind me about halfway in, I would have finished last night. Instead I woke up early to finish in time for the end of #deweys24hourreadathon

In total I read 7 hours
Finished tagged book and started another. Still working through my audio

A group of paranormal fans meet through the summer at haunted places to tell ghost stories and discover some ghosts are best left alone. The book had an unexpected twist in the end. It was both a heartbreaking and heartwarming tale. Halloween is heavily mentioned in the end so 26 + 3 hours of reading = 56 pts #teamharkness #scarathlon2020 #screamathon @StayCurious @4thhouseontheleft

Some excellent prose here, especially around the mutability of memory, and I loved the setting, but this one never really came together for me. Unpopular opinion, I know, but I just never connected with the characters.🤷🏻‍♀️

But it does directly involve Halloween for +25 points for #TeamHarkness #Scarathlon2020

And +55 each for #Screamathon and #Gothtober (Lies prompt) for 5.5 hrs of reading. All together +136

Craig Davidson AKA Nick Cutter's book is a coming of age story set in Niagara Falls in the 80s. The horror loving Jake Baker, along with his friends Billy & Dove, hang out with his uncle & his eccentric friend as they explore the paranormal side of the city. This is vastly different from Cutter's books, more Something Wicked This Way Comes than The Troop. An enjoyable read with a bit of 80s nostalgia & a few quirky characters.

MsMelissa Wow! The cover for your version is so different from mine. I don‘t think I would have picked it up with this cover. Glad you enjoyed it. It‘s still on my TBR pile. I looked at it today funnily enough, so that and your review are perhaps a sign I need to read it now! 4y
vivastory @Book_Fiend_Melissa I really like the other cover, but I actually really like my cover. I had ordered it when I found out that he's Nick Cutter. It's a quick read, my copy was 200 pages but with the formatting I think it made it longer. 4y

This wasn‘t at all what I was expecting, but I liked it anyways! Never one to pass up a coming of age story set in the 80s, this hauntingly deep and insightful novel gave me the feels. Well written and touching with a nice little twist, this one is short enough to bump to the top of your TBR list!

⭐️⭐️⭐️/⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Not quite what I was expecting, but a very enjoyable read nonetheless. A coming of age story, set in 1980s Niagara Falls. Jake and his friends Billy and Dove are taken on a ghost tour of the town by Jake‘s Uncle Calvin. As the tour progresses, Jake realises there is something profoundly wrong with Uncle Calvin. Told in a then and now format, with humour and deep sadness.

Annie1215 I‘ve *ALMOST* bought this one multiple times, but haven‘t quite committed yet. I‘ll have to add it to my TBR pile. 4y

I read this between May 24 & June 1 and gave it 4 ⭐️. I really enjoyed this book. It‘s not as spooky as the title or the blurb on the back lead me to believe. I enjoyed the fact that Davidson writes about more personal ghosts and demons. I did feel that the narrator was somewhat inaccessible to the reader. But it was still a good story.

5/5🌟 It has been a while since I read a book that grabbed hold of my emotions quite like this one did. I don't want to spoil the story at all but know Davidson's writing is excellent! He captures the innocence of youth on the cusp of the realities of adulthood, and the importance of family and the things we do for the people we love in such a moving way. Its beautiful, its heartbreaking, its heartwarming, I seriously cant reccomend it enough!
