Paris: The Novel | Edward Rutherfurd
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From Edward Rutherfurd, the grand master of the historical novel, comes a dazzling epic about the magnificent city of Paris. Moving back and forth in time, the story unfolds through intimate and thrilling tales of self-discovery, divided loyalty, and long-kept secrets. As various characters come of age, seek their fortunes, and fall in and out of love, the novel follows nobles who claim descent from the hero of the celebrated poem The Song of Roland; a humble family that embodies the ideals of the French Revolution; a pair of brothers from the slums behind Montmartre, one of whom works on the Eiffel Tower as the other joins the underworld near the Moulin Rouge; and merchants who lose everything during the reign of Louis XV, rise again in the age of Napoleon, and help establish Paris as the great center of art and culture that it is today. With Rutherfurds unrivaled blend of impeccable research and narrative verve, this bold novel brings the sights, scents, and tastes of the City of Light to brilliant life. Praise for Paris A tour de force . . . [Edward Rutherfurds] most romantic and richly detailed work of fiction yet.Bookreporter Fantastic . . . as grand and engrossing as Paris itself.Historical Novels Review This saga is filled with historical detail and a huge cast of characters, fictional and real, spanning generations and centuries. But Paris, with its art, architecture, culture and couture, is the undisputed main character.Fort Worth Star-Telegram Both Paris, the venerable City of Light, and Rutherfurd, the undisputed master of the multigenerational historical saga, shine in this sumptuous urban epic.Booklist There is suspense, intrigue and romance around every corner.Asbury Park Press

I listened to the audio and it was unfortunate it wasn‘t in chronological order, like the others by him I‘ve read. It was harder to follow as it jumped around. The storyline I found the most interesting was the building of the Eiffel Tower. Otherwise, I kind of got lost in the rest and wasn‘t quite sure what was happening. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin Being such a long book over many generations (and the back and forth in time didn‘t help), it was hard for me to figure out who was who and how they were related. 12mo

Chrissyreadit Hi!!! How are you? 2y
tpixie @Chrissyreadit doing great! Got to see my grandkids on Friday & Saturday, and today Im having a nice quiet day to myself. Best of both worlds! Hope you are doing well. And your daughter I met at the National Book Festival - I hope she is well. 2y
Chrissyreadit @tpixie that does sound like the best of both worlds- is your son still in Cali? My daughter is well! She‘s still modeling and living in LA I miss her so much! But we talk every day. 2y

tpixie @Chrissyreadit that‘s amazing about your daughter! Congrats! It is really far away but you‘re excited that they can chase their dreams. I have a sundown in San Diego vlogging poker blogs https://youtu.be/hGFv1uwydKQ my dancer was doing great until Covid hit and so he came back home took some classes and he‘s heading off to nursing school this fall He‘s in the Netflix movies The Prom and Christian summer camp musical A Week Away. 2y
Chrissyreadit @tpixie that poker blog was crazy- it‘s amazing at the opportunity social media provides! Does he love living there? Good for your other son on nursing school! Did he ever want to follow in your footsteps as a Dr? 2y
tpixie @Chrissyreadit yes loves San Diego. The weather is always great. Great zoo and ocean Adam did earlier, but now he‘s older, he wants a quicker schooling. 2y
Chrissyreadit I‘m interested in this book- I read Sarum about 30 years ago and loved it but I haven‘t read any chunksters since having kids 🤣 2y
tpixie @Chrissyreadit I hadn‘t heard about him, but then ran across this book. I‘m listening to the book but went to the library to get the physical book for the family tree, and saw his others. Sometime I‘d like to invest some time reading those. He does a good job integrating history with the book characters. They are chunksters!! 2y

This saga brings life to Paris from the 1200‘s to the 1800‘s through the eyes of 6 families. The story is compelling and so is the history.
It reminds me of Ken‘s Follet‘s Kingsbridge Trilogy, beginning with The Pillars of the Earth 👇

4⭐️ I read this book as my #bookspin selection for March and despite taking me a little over a month to complete, I ended up really enjoying this book. It mainly explores one group of individuals between the 1880‘s and WWII, although the author goes back other time periods to explore the origins of the various families. #bookreview #bookstagram #fiction #historicalfiction #fiction #litsyatoz #letterp #p #litsyatoz2020 #2020

Not #bookrelated but I am so heartbroken by today‘s fire at Notre Dame and I am sure there are other #littens that can relate. Paris is my favorite place in the world and never could have imagined that this epic monument wouldn‘t be there forever. I am heartened by the fact that part of the structure is intact and am sure they will rebuild to some extent but still devastating that 850 years of history is gone. 😭

Bklover 😥💔 6y
CollapsingLibrary Do they know how the fire started? I‘ve been following the coverage of the fire but haven‘t heard anything about how it started yet 6y
Rachel_nyc @hjreviews I think they‘re still investigating but as of now are calling it accidental. I‘m guessing the construction going on was a factor. 6y
BarbaraBB It is so sad, so much history destroyed. 6y
Rachel_nyc @BarbaraBB I‘m glad much of the structure survived, not to mention the relics but still so sad to see it with so much damage. My favorite view, from the left bank, will never be the same. 😢 6y

A multigenerational saga that takes readers on a journey through thousands of years of Parisian history as experienced through the lives of several families. I got kind of bored by the end of this 800-page novel. 3/5 stars

JackOBotts Have you read New York (by Rutherfurd)? I really enjoyed that saga, but it was a long read. If you like historical fiction about American history, I recommend John Jake‘s Kent Family Chronicles (8-books). First is 6y
callielafleur I would also recommend James Michener. Hawaii is a favorite of mine. 6y
Amiable @JackOBotts Yes, I have read "New York." And I read the Kent Family Chronicles a LONG (we're talking decades) time ago, but I do remember enjoying them. I should revisit that series. Thanks for the reminder! ? 6y

I really wanted to love this book. The cover is beautiful, it's been on my TBR for a few years, and I love epic historical fiction, but I started it 3 months ago and I'm only at about 350 pages out of 805. It's boring and hard to follow because it jumps around in time and there are too many characters to keep track of. What a disappointment.

Only 83% and my loan expires in a day!!!! I‘m going to listen as much as I can tonight, but I‘m so worried that I won‘t finish before it disappears!! How do I renew an Overdrive audiobook?!?!

DebinHawaii I don't know if there are differences between Overdrive library platforms but when it gets within a day or two of it's due-back date I get a "Request Again" underneath the book in my loans page. This was my book club pick for the month of September. Needless to say, I bailed at page 400. The book has 828 pages and too many one dimensional stereotypical characters. Lola Historical Novels Review: “This saga is filled with historical detail and a huge cast of characters, fictional and real, spanning generations and centuries. But Paris, with its art, architecture, culture and couture, is the undisputed main character.” 8y

Aahhhh, what mine eyes first rest upon as I enter my humble abode. Nothing like books as proper décor to please the soul. My heart always flutters and imbues my mind with pleasure.

Bkwurm This photo warms my soul. What an inviting room! 8y

MrBook Lol, thanks! Took awhile to set up, but exceedingly worthwhile, especially with seeing only lush forest through the windows. 8y

Mehso-so

If this had been only 400 pages, I would give it a 'like'. But 800 pages of back & forth between families AND between eras was too much. I'm not sure why Rutherfurd decided not to write it chronologically.

brendanmleonard This is unfortunately Rutherford's thing. His early stuff is pretty good but lately he's been overdoing it. To the max. 8y
