Help, Thanks, Wow
Help, Thanks, Wow: The Three Essential Prayers | Anne Lamott
44 posts | 34 read | 35 to read
New York Times-bestselling author Anne Lamott writes about the three simple prayers essential to coming through tough times, difficult days and the hardships of daily life. Readers of all ages have followed and cherished Anne Lamotts funny and perceptive writing about her own faith through decades of trial and error. And in her new book, Help, Thanks, Wow, she has coalesced everything she knows about prayer to these fundamentals. It is these three prayers asking for assistance from a higher power, appreciating what we have that is good, and feeling awe at the world around us that can get us through the day and can show us the way forward. In Help, Thanks, Wow, Lamott recounts how she came to these insights, explains what they mean to her and how they have helped, and explores how others have embraced these same ideas. Insightful and honest as only Anne Lamott can be, Help, Thanks, Wow is the everyday faith book that new Lamott readers will love and longtime Lamott fans will treasure.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️This is specifically about prayer, but embedded in that is all her ways of making you feel like openness and goodness and God, whoever She really is, are important and easy and just possible in ways that in everyday life seem...less possible. I wish it had been a bit longer or more full or somehow made me slow down & reflect, but there is also much I will take with me, and I'm, as always, grateful for her voice & care.

AmyG Well said. She is a favorite of mine. 2y

A wonderful little book about prayer that is not shove-it-down-your-throat preachy.

I love Anne Lamott's style. This short book is full of highlight-able words of wisdom.

I highly recommend it 🙂

P.S. If you haven't checked out Bookmarks Magazine, I highly recommend that, too!

I am not a particularly religious person but I do believe in the power of prayer and Anne Lamott is amazing.

I spent the entirety of my 20-year education in Catholic institutions, and I‘m still active in my home parish. But I genuinely love to learn about other faiths, because at its heart, they all focus on the same thing: Love, and Goodness, and Truth - we just have different names for It. (I also love when there‘s humor involved.) #helpthankswow #annelamott #prayer #faith

I had to give one more shout out to this little book that packs a wallop of wisdom from Anne Lamott: who reminds us to have more honest conversations with God, learn to love our depressing, hilarious, mostly decent selves & try to leave the world a slightly better place during our stay here. AND because I just updated my #LitsyA-Z list & realized this book marks my last entry:#LetterH Woohoo

I needed an audio book for a long drive. I randomly picked Anne Lamott's Grace Eventually Thoughts on Faith. I was hooked. I fell for this author hook, line & sinker. I devour everything she writes. He words soothe my soul. I had the opportunity to hear her speak about 4 years ago. I also got to take a picture with her & got my #signed book. #readjanuary @RealLifeReading

I've been painstakingly compiling my list for the #LitsyReadingChallenge today. I'm almost done, but I'm stumped on a couple of categories. Any suggestions for a book written from multiple perspectives or a not-too-scary horror option? Thanks in advance!

#LitsyRC10 #LitsyRC23

Moray_Reads Hits both 😆 8y
Bookworm54 If you haven't read this yet, it covers multiple POVs 8y
Blair_Reads Horrorstor was one that wasn't too scary. 8y

Bookworm54 Oooo yes! I agree with @Blair_Reads Horrorstor is a fairly quick read too 🙂 8y
Ericmanciniwriter Welcome to the goon squad was a good multiple POV 8y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads And it's over 400 pages, so that ticks another box! Thanks! 8y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore it's a mad, mad, brilliant, mad book. Very divisive but I loved it 8y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads It sounds right up my alley, actually! 8y
saresmoore @Bookworm54 Believe it or not, I haven't read Homegoing! And I was looking for somewhere to fit it in the challenge. Thank you! 8y
saresmoore @Blair_Reads I was considering Horrorstor, especially considering that at least 50% of my home is furnished by IKEA...seems appropriate! Thank you. 8y
saresmoore @Eamann Goon Squad sounds great, actually. Thanks! 8y
jessberk13 Almost all of Liane Moriarty's books are multiple perspectives. I'm also thinking Horrorstör for my horror read. If you haven't already, NOS4A2 is a very creepy read! (edited) 8y
Bookworm54 @saresmoore I only read it because it was for book club, but it is amazing. I would never have usually picked it up otherwise! Or I wouldn't have before Litsy... now I want to read everything 😋 8y
Kalalalatja For a multiple POV book I would also recommend 8y
saresmoore @Kalalalatja Arcadia sounds amazing! Thank you! 8y
saresmoore @jessica Thank you! I actually haven't read anything or Moriarty's yet, so that's a great tip. However, NOS4A2 sounds WAY too scary for my taste! 😱 8y
Bookzombie It doesn't specify age so maybe try a young adult or middle grade. I think Anna Dressed In Blood counts. So does R.L. Stine and Christopher Pike. Also Coraline. Or maybe something considered classic like Frankenstein or Dracula. 8y
saresmoore @Bookzombie That's a great idea! I've already read Frankenstein and Dracula multiple times, but still haven't gotten around to Coraline! And my list is noticeably lacking in Gaiman. :) Thanks! 8y
Bookzombie @saresmoore Yay, glad to help! 8y
Megabooks Not too bad on the scary scale and it's funny too (edited) 8y
drokka Anything by Robert McCammon would work for your not too scary horror. If you want a big book I recommend Swan Song, but my favourite is Wolf's Hour. If you'd rathe do short stories, Blue World would fit. 8y
saresmoore @Ebooksandcooks I am nervous about the demon possession theme as it is, honestly, a little too real life for me. But funny sounds like it doesn't take the demonic theme too seriously? 8y
saresmoore @drokka Thank you for the recommendation. I've never read any McCammon, but now I'm very intrigued. 8y
Megabooks No it really doesn't imo. I was worried initially too. It was my first horror book and I didn't find it very scary. More fun. 8y
saresmoore @Ebooksandcooks Well, that's a relief, because I've been intrigued by the Litsy reviews. I think it's definitely worth a try. Thank you! 8y
obviateit Just stopping by to recommend Frankenstein and Dracula as not at all scary, and I saw that @Bookzombie already did. So, consider this a seconding of that! 😊 8y
LiteraryinPA I agree with @jessica about Liane Moriarty! A good one to start with might be 8y

Nuwanda

Okay, fellow Littens. I'm looking for a book I've seen on here before, but I can't remember the title. The cover is rather intricate, and I'm pretty sure the story has to do with a young man finding an ancient text about a race of people who seem (to my memory) to be similar to the races described in Monstress, sort of half-human, half-beast. Any ideas? I saw it recently but now cannot remember the title so I can download a sample!

Nuwanda I found it! The Devourers! 8y

I knocked this bad boy out in a day and a half while taking a break from the much longer Leonard Cohen biography. Its brevity and deceptive simplicity belie a power and depth that was very moving. Its middle section (Thanks) also inspired an upcoming blog post on my blog/website The Zen Teacher. Feel free to look for it in a week or so.
