The Whisper Man
The Whisper Man | Alex North
In his debut psychological thriller, Alex North weaves a multi-generational tale of suspense, as a father and son are caught in the crosshairs of an investigation to catch a serial killer preying on a small town. After the sudden death of his wife, Tom Kennedy believes a fresh start will help him and his young son Jake heal. A new beginning, a new house, a new town. Featherbank. But the town has a dark past. Twenty years ago, a serial killer abducted and murdered five residents. Until Frank Carter was finally caught, he was nicknamed "The Whisper Man," for he would lure his victims out by whispering at their windows at night. Just as Tom and Jake settle into their new home, a young boy vanishes. His disappearance bears an unnerving resemblance to Frank Carter's crimes, reigniting old rumors that he preyed with an accomplice. Now, detectives Amanda Beck and Pete Willis must find the boy before it is too late, even if that means Pete has to revisit his great foe in prison: The Whisper Man. And then Jake begins acting strangely. He hears a whispering at his window...

Since Halloween is near, I‘m enjoying some creepy reads. And I‘ve tackled some books but this is fabulous for me. A single father, his son who‘s very talented in drawing and has an imaginary friend. And a detective who‘s drowned in guilt and past. See how their lives entwined with each other. #thriller

⭐⭐⭐⭐
I really enjoyed this book. It was very realistic, like a true crime fiction. I would love to read a prequel.

The story was engaging despite being somewhat predictable. The characters were easily relatable.

I was pleased with this read and would definitely suggest others to read it too.

A grieving father and son move to a new house and a fresh start. An aging police detective regrets a notorious unsolved case. And now a child is missing. The fortuitous convergence of these factors leads to a level of creepiness that will keep you reading. Occasionally predictable but still a good showing. #crime #mystery #AlmostAThriler

I did not think the book was “scary” like a lot of people have been saying. I wasn‘t afraid to read it at night lol BUT I was however extremely saddened by what happened to so many children in this book. It was scary to think that this potentially could be a true story, that this could actually happen to children.
I loved, loved, loved the writing style, context and the attention to details.
Highly recommended! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The third book I finished this weekend (I‘ve been getting a lot more reading done lately thanks to my new job). This book had some good, gripping moments where I felt like I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen next. Unfortunately, I had the culprit figured out a little more than halfway through the book. Forced myself to finish the last 1/4 of it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

🎧 This was a really good book. Creepy Halloween material! Quick easy listen. Read by one of the doctors (Doctor Who) and a good narration. Dealing with loss, being a single parent, suspenseful mystery and of course the child kidnapping killing Whisper Man! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/8

Wow. I was so pleasantly surprised by this one. I'm not typically a fan of crime thrillers because I always feel like they are predictable and have the same formula with different characters. This one blew me away. Exciting and scary and kept me guessing. I could not put it down!

Great read. Though this book has been hyped a lot but it's really not that creepy or suspenseful. I can see more and more authors prefer leaving some open end for characters these days although for a suspense novel that's pretty upsetting for me. Moreover, I expected more light to be shed on The Whisper Man himself and Rebecca. Better ending was expected. Best part is its emphasis on father-son bond.
The book is undoubtedly a great one time read.

It‘s creepy but not terrifying. The ending is just right. I loved this book. A nice beginner horror-thriller I‘d say, not too much but not boring or holding back. If you want a well written debut to become addicted too, then The Whisper Man is the one for you.

It was a quick read. Entertaining but predictable for me. I liked the plotline but there were a few holes and what i like to call "gloss overs". Widower Tom Kennedy moves his young son to a new town with a dark history. When the past seems to be repeating itself they may find themselves in danger. Detective Pete Willis is a man haunted by the past. Will he be able to find redemption and solve the crime that has tormented him for decades?????

Meh. That‘s about it up for me. It‘s a typical serial killer story using many of the same tropes as others. Potentially interesting characters if only the author went deeper in character development especially the villains. If you want a quick, fast read without much thought, this will do it.

Excuse the crappy picture, it‘s the reflection off the contact the library puts on their books. While I ended up enjoying this in the end, I‘m giving it a so-so because it took so long to catch my attention. It‘s definitely not the best crime novel this year for me, I can think of a few that are much better. I‘m not saying don‘t give this a read, it may just be that it‘s not my cup of tea but it may be yours. If you‘ve read it, what did you think?

MizzGraham I think the writing was just a little too overly “telling” instead of showing. It didn‘t allow me to formulate my own perceptions or draw my own conclusions, but instead, it told me what I should think. 4w
Lizpixie @MizzGraham exactly! The only thing that surprised me was the identity of the little girl. Everything else was basically lit up with huge billboards & flashing arrows saying”LOOK HERE! A clue!” 4w

“The Whisper Man” got me all tangled up! Hooked, line and sinker! An impressive debut novel. A story of three generation of father and son complicated and complex relationship. A serial killer and a twenty years crime in a town called Featherbank. A page turner novel, and I must say have chosen well, for it kept me entertained on a long travel home. Best mystery novel 2019. Kudos to you Mr. North, for I was amazed and left of wanting more. 5⭐️‘s

A solid psychological thriller/ police procedural. I've seen mixed reviews on this one. Some seem disappointed that it wasn't more creepy or scary. This could be a marketing problem (Goodreads has it mistakenly labeled as horror fiction) & a lot of people have (justifiably so imo) pointed out that there are a lot of unsettling moments in this book. It's along the lines of JD Barker's 4MK series, or Thomas Harris. There's even a nod towards a 👇

vivastory specific Harris novel, but I won't say as it's a spoiler. I thought it was well executed & I completely agree with the blurb from Kirkus, "A terrifying page-turner with the complexities of fatherhood at its core." 1mo
Captivatedbybooks Never heard of Thomas Harris what do you recommend i‘d start with? 1mo
vivastory @Captivatedbybooks I recommend the following & if you enjoy it, I'd read Hannibal afterwards 1mo
lele1432 I hate it when marketing creates unrealistic expectations lol. From the synopsis I figured this was a crime novel/police procedural. I look forward to reading it. 1mo
