I loved this book. This may be my favorite St. James novel. Kitty gets a job as a nurse at Portis House a hospital for soldiers considered crazy. But of course there are complications like the cute patient 16, the fact that Kitty has no idea what she's doing and there are ghosts 💜

Ghost stories aren't typically my thing, but I did mostly enjoy this book. I liked trying to piece the mystery together, even though I was way off! There were a few loose ends and odd things in the end, though.

This one was a lot of fun to read with #sundaybuddyread group. It was suspenseful with likable characters and spooky too. Kitty was a strong female lead. This took place in an asylum where Kitty works as a nurse. Of course, she starts to investigate the hauntings and question how the men are being treated by the doctors. A great read. #audiobook #bookhangover

Read for #sundaybuddyread for August, I really enjoyed this spooky ghostly book, set in a house turned into an asylum for WWI veterans suffering from PTSD. Kitty is on the run from her past & fakes her way into hiding out there, pretending she is a nurse & finds that bad things are happening at Portis House. I liked the characters, gothic vibe, atmospheric setting & all the twists. It kept me absorbed & is in my top favorites from the author. 👻🖤

JaclynW I really liked the ending of this book. It was very satisfying after the horrors that took place. The Gothic feel was done well. I like so many of the characters too - Matron, Nina, Kitty, Jack, the list goes on. They all played their role and made an impact to the story. Nicely written and un-putdownable kind of book. 3y

Hooked_on_books I‘m excited to dive into another of hers in a few months! 🎉 I did want to mention that I loved the scene where Kitty was with the guy inspecting and wanting to get into his briefcase and the one soldier (Mabry?) played the “crazy” role to help her. That was just so clever and funny. Loved it! 3y

Overall I felt this had the most interesting cast of characters of her books and I would've liked a bit more about many of them. I didn't read the Broken Girls with you all so maybe I'll try to squeeze it in during the upcoming spooky season. 3y

mollyrotondo I can‘t wait to read more of her books with the group. I had a very unproductive reading month this August but I still enjoyed reading everyone‘s comments from the past couple of weeks that I was behind. My favorite part was when all of the patients stood up to Syd. It was disappointing that he was such a terrible brother in the end. 3y

vlwelser I have a hard time ranking her books. This is definitely my favorite of her post WWI UK books. It's hard to compare it to Broken Girls or Sundown. 3y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This was enjoyable, but maybe 3rd in a tight race behind Inquiry and The Sun Down Motel. I felt that the end here was too tidy in how everyone factored into the shady business of Portis House and I guessed a bit of the outcome this time around. 3y

mollyrotondo I really liked this one a lot. I think I‘d rank my top three as Inquiry, Broken Girls, and Silence. Although I loved Sundown and Lost Among the Living too. And Maddy Clare was super scary. I just love them all!!! 3y

rjsthumbelina I think sometimes places do kind of absorb the evil that's been done there. Or maybe it's just that it's haunting to know that something so terrible took place there. Without any resolution for Nils' ghost, I hope that the house just rots away, even as beautiful as it seemed. But @vlwelser I see where you're coming from - could make for a great sequel! 3y

mollyrotondo That guy is too evil to just move on to the other side. And the place just continues to rot. They definitely need to demolish the site and uproot the soil too just be safe. How deep do you have to dig to extract evil? 3y

vlwelser I thought this made Paulus look less harsh. There isn't really anything wrong with most of these guys when they aren't possessed by ghosts. I mean PTSD sucks and all that but most of them seem like they could function in the world and not need to be locked up. 3y

rjsthumbelina I loved that this was the ending that some of the men got! Having each other as support is likely to go a long way. Glad they get a chance to live as 'normal' citizens 3y

(That‘s what my heart wants to believe—but was there really a better institution or asylum back then?!) I guess like one of them said (I forget who) maybe they at least got transferred to a place that didn‘t make them more traumatized. 3y

I picked up a feeling that maybe Anna was interested in West (maybe it was the bringing him breakfast line) so if he's not finding love just yet, at least he can have some fun. 3y

mollyrotondo So released that some of these men got to be a support system for each other so that they could experience some normal post war living. They do seem like they could function in society with some support. That‘s why veterans societies are important nowadays and need to be better funded. 3y

Abusive father, made fun of in the war for being different, dishonorably discharged, then sacrificed by a father who could never love him! The only descriptions that we got from those that knew him in life were of how sweet and caring he was. You can only hope that he can be at peace knowing he saved his sister from their father's wrath 3y

Hooked_on_books I don‘t believe in ghosts, but I‘ve definitely heard the theory of them being unrested dead and it makes sense. 3y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Mikael had a sad story. Given that a huge majority of ghost stories are about harm & fear, it makes sense for them to be evil and/or unsettled spirits. I mean, where's the friendly ghost who slips your lunch into your purse when you're forgetting it? Why am I not hearing about a ghost who does the dishes for me while I'm at work? 3y

mollyrotondo I felt so bad for Mikael. He couldn‘t rest because he felt like a failure and his father couldn‘t rest because he was so angry. I think ghosts are the dead who cannot find rest whether they were good people or bad people irl. I am so glad Mikael has peace now after saving his sister. He seemed like a much better brother than Syd. 3y

kspenmoll Creeton between the war & his parents, was damaged & not sure if he is redeemable. Marby also took me by surprise but then so much of this book did! 3y

AmyG I think all that business calling him Captain was a ruse to make us think he was a “good guy”. 3y

vlwelser I'm not sure I totally understand what happened here. Was he possessed all along or did the ghost use whomever was most convenient? I liked Marbry. I'm going to go ahead and continue to blame it all on the evil ghost. 3y

Kimberlone @vlwelser I was also a bit confused, but thought it was more of the ghost possessing him than him actually being evil 3y

rjsthumbelina I agree - Mabry succumbed to the ghost right when the ghost needed him. He was always susceptible, with the nosebleeds and how much he loved his children and wanted to see them. He was kind of a foil for Gersbach in that way. It felt like the ghost intentionally left him alone so that no one would expect that the ghost would take possession of him then. I loved that Mabry had a pension established for Roger 3y

rjsthumbelina I felt so bad for Creeton at the end - his parents reminded me of the parenting style of Nils (read: emotionally and physically abusive, child can't ever measure up to unrealistic expectations). He knew he'd never be good enough, not even to be the ghost's sacrifice 3y

DebinHawaii Yes, it seemed Gersbach‘s ghost jumped to Mabry to get the “assignment” done & get his sacrifice & it was possession rather than him being evil. I think basically he was a good person who understands right & wrong who felt the guilt of what he did while possessed & is more “redeemable” in most ways than Creeton. He went for Kitty‘s ideas to help make amends for Roger & to help Anna too. 3y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I still see Creeton as a bad guy (if a bit sympathetic) and Mabry as a good guy. The way they treated others while possessed vs how they treated people when they we're themselves make me confident that whatever demons are there, we saw them for who they are. Mabry seems caring (family, pension, kind) and Creeton was happy to intimidate Kitty right from the get go. 3y

mollyrotondo The ghost took advantage of both Mabry and Creeton. Creeton was angry and depressed for being rejected by his parents and would have succumbed to the ghost in order to prove he was strong. Mabry was kind hearted and sensitive hence the nose bleeds. But he tried to make amends in the end once the ghost left his body. 3y

Sargar114 What a sad situation. Also sad to think it was very likely her story wouldn‘t be believed (self defense) and she likely would have been convicted, so running was really her only choice. Given the times, I doubt she‘ll ever recover mentally. Guessing Maisey will take care of her the rest of her life. 3y

His ghost definitely isn't gone - he never got his sacrifice. I thought it was sad that they left the beautiful house to decay into ruin. I wanted the ⬇️ 3y

It seems she goes a lot on autopilot to just get through life, but hopefully Maisey will take care of if her & help her. Definitely no one should go back to that house which is sad. DanaManiac I think Anna is damaged for good. Whatever she insinuated regarding what her father did to her…I don‘t even want to imagine. Then having her dad kill her brother and having to kill him in turn to save her own life?? That‘s A LOT. 3y

RedxoHearts That's probably something Anna would have to deal with for a long time. Though it makes me sad that even back then she would have to be on the run because they wouldn't believe her. They would have taken the dad's side especially then. Hopefully she eventually would have started over in some new country and a simple life. 3y

Hooked_on_books The one thing I would have liked Matron to have changed is the threats. She obviously felt she needed to threaten, but if someone assumes they‘ll be losing their job anyway, they often tend to get sloppy and even vindictive, which in a health care setting is dangerous. Otherwise, she was a-ok in the end. 3y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I liked the journey we went on with Matron. Way harsh matron, firm but fair, human, then finally a kind woman. She needed the nursing help so Matron tested Kitty & she passed. I think it would've went differently if Kitty was an idiot, but she was determined to put forth an honest effort and passed the tests. I liked her comments to Kitty about getting married and becoming a ninny. 🤣 3y

mollyrotondo I really liked Matron as the story progressed. She started out really hard but as we got to see her in action I realized she wasn‘t a bad person at all. Some jobs require a little toughness in order to get the best out of workers but that isn‘t always a bad thing. I really liked her a lot and I thought it was great that she took the three young nurses with her to her new job. 3y

I didn't expect that the dad was quite as horrible as he turned out to be. St. James doesn't normally go for the villain characters without some explanatory backstory for why they act the way they do. I was wondering how this guy got to be so horrible. I wish we'd gotten more insight into the Gersbachs 3y

DebinHawaii I felt like the father was the evil & may have killed the son but didn‘t think it was an execution—I thought an altercation or Mikeal was protecting his sister. I did think Mikeal was just a lost spirit/soul & not evil & that Anna was alive. I think overall it was done well—the reveal & the twists but I would have liked more insight into the family. Maisey‘s father‘s role was a good twist. There was a definite bad/evil father theme in this one! (edited) 3y

DanaManiac There were a lot of pieces to assemble at the end. I also felt like the dad being evil seemed random. No origin story, just a family with a horrible father/husband whose terribleness is so bad it continues after death…? 🧐 3y

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Yay! I got some of the Gersbach's story right, especially that Nils was evil! I feel there were lots of loose ends and hints that were glossed over & tidied up a little easily, but overall I enjoyed the story arc. 3y

mollyrotondo I think it was told well especially to have the comparison between her abusive father and the Gersbach father. And another war torn young man rejected by his family like the patients in Portis House. I thought it all worked well I just didn‘t connect it all myself 😂 3y

On the semi-awkward sex scale, this was mild and she thankfully didn't take us through the details of Kitty's full maiden voyage. St James is showing growth! 🤣 3y

AmyG I like the revealing, slowly, of info that leads to the conclusion. I am usually horible at figuring out the secrets. I got something correct as I did think one of the family members was alive. 3y

kspenmoll I was totally unable to guess or figure out the ending. Agree with @AmyG in liking the slow reveal of info. I enjoyed not knowing! Loved that she was able to nab the file out of Deighton‘s briefcase. Lots of collaboration between nurse/men. (edited) 3y

Sargar114 I loved not being able to really figure it out. I think we got bits and pieces but never the whole thing. St James is so great at blending the supernatural and human causes to creepiness. Once the pandemic hit, I stopped trying to figure it out and just went along for the ride. It was so much going on that it was easier that way. 3y

I did think there was more of a human hand in the men‘s state of minds—that there was something going on with experimentation or something. Deighton was a bit unsatisfying—I had the impression he was maybe the “face” of the clinic but not the mastermind (which seemed more like Maisey‘s father) if keeping the men there & collecting the money from their rich families. It seems like there⬇️ 3y

Once the reveals started coming I just went with the flow. This one was harder to figure out as we read the entire book. I liked that it focused more on the men‘s trauma throughout because that was the main point of the book. 3y

Karisa It was like “🤦🏻‍♀️ 1919. How did I not see that coming?” 😂 That twist literally stopped me in my audio walking tracks. It did allow for the intensity and lack of control needed to resolve the book with Jack/Kitty/Mabry more in the center of it all. 3y

Sargar114 It‘s interesting to think if we read this a couple of years ago, this part of the story may not have as big an impact. Now it just adds to the scariness of the story and was so believable. I loved how Matron remained strong and giving direction and leadership during this time. 3y

The dreams. Coward. Smoke. Naked. Frail. The weak … Are some people easier to take over than others? Can everyone be - or are some people too strong in nature? What do you think?

kspenmoll I think their are people who are more sensitive, able to be receptors, not quite strong enough to withstand a “ takeover” of someone or something else.Others are more aware of outside forces, do not believe in anything like that, or are strong enough to withstand such things, especially if combined energy with others. 3y

Karisa I think we‘d all like to believe we are part of the strong group, and that‘s part of the appeal. 3y

rjsthumbelina I don't think that Archie was so susceptible because he was weak. He seemed to be so sensitive to the feelings around him. I think that was more of the difference. It explains why Creeton was also so manipulated by the ghost. He pretended to not care about the feelings of the people in his life, but really he cared so deeply about how others saw him. 3y

DebinHawaii I think Archie was more sensitive & empath than “weak” but I do feel like some personalities have more barriers they can/do erect than can help them withstand more. (edited) 3y

Hooked_on_books I agree with what others are saying about sensitive rather than weak. Although I‘m sure there are some who buy into toxic masculinity who prefer to reference it as weakness. 3y

mollyrotondo I agree with what everyone said about some people being for sensitive but definitely not weak. This ghost also seemed super strong to be able to jump from body to body. 3y

Very long week & long day but I did manage to get by the monthly craft market by my house & hit up the dim sum table for my radish cakes & shrimp-chive dumplings & taro puffs. So it‘s a couch blanket dinner 😋 while I read the final chapters of this one for #sundaybuddyread Hopefully I stay awake & can squeeze in some time for Persuasion posts for #PemberLittens #chapteraday too. So much work & life stuff interfering with my book time lately.😬
