Silence for the Dead | Simone St. James
144 posts | 67 read | 3 reading | 68 to read
Portis House emerged from the fog as we approached, showing itself slowly as a long, low shadow.... In 1919, Kitty Weekes, pretty, resourceful, and on the run, falsifies her background to obtain a nursing position at Portis House, a remote hospital for soldiers left shell-shocked by the horrors of the Great War. Hiding the shame of their mental instability in what was once a magnificent private estate, the patients suffer from nervous attacks and tormenting dreams. But something more is going on at Portis Houseits plaster is crumbling, its plumbing makes eerie noises, and strange breaths of cold waft through the empty rooms. Its known that the former occupants left abruptly, but where did they go? And why do the patients all seem to share the same nightmare, one so horrific that they dare not speak of it? Kitty finds a dangerous ally in Jack Yates, an inmate who may be a war hero, a madman or maybe both. But even as Kitty and Jack create a secret, intimate alliance to uncover the truth, disturbing revelations suggest the presence of powerful spectral forces. And when a medical catastrophe leaves them even more isolated, they must battle the menace on their own, caught in the heart of a mystery that could destroy them both. From the Trade Paperback edition.

My Sunny Boy kept me company while I finished this one 😻. This is the 2nd novel by St. James that I‘ve read and loved, I definitely need to read more of her work. I was hooked from start to finish. It has a little bit of everything: ghostly figures, mysteries to solve, likable/sympathetic characters, action, drama, vivid descriptions, and romance sprinkled in. The MC and supporting characters all had wonderful arcs. I‘m happy with how it ended.

St. James knows how to write a good ghost story without being cheesy or over the top. This a is a good atmospheric story set in a creepy house turned mental hospital that was left abandoned by a family that was never heard or seen from again. Something bad happened in that house and something residual is still there that no one can explain.

Simone St James writes some great books that also make for great audiobooks. This one is set shortly after the end of the First World War and deals with the trauma created during the war. Amongst this there is also a mystery behind what is going on at Portis House. My third book finished for #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

I started this for #AuthorAMonth when I was in a different place mentally than I‘ve been in the past few days. And I just didn‘t have the bandwidth anymore for a story about WWI soldiers with PTSD. I still have Ghost 19 I‘d like to read, but this is an “it‘s not you; it‘s me” #bail.

Soubhiville Totally understand, I bailed on her as well. I hope you‘re ok. 6mo

I loved this because it starts with a cliche, the haunted madhouse, & works backwards to get to a story that‘s anything but. This is the only Simone St. James story that I haven‘t found frightening, but it was such a great character novel I didn‘t care, I just wanted to see how the plot evolved. Aside from the lack of creepiness it has all the elements I‘ve come to think of as typical St. James like the quippy dialogue & the post-war love story.

@BookishTrish , @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego , @BeeMagical - I'm so excited for LMPBC! What are your thoughts on theme? This time of year I read a lot of spooky/cozy/seasonal (fall/Christmas) themed books but I also like gold old fashioned mysteries, YA Fantasy, lots of stuff!

kspenmoll Your flowers? Beautiful colors. 3y
BeeMagical I love thrillers and YA! Spooky season is my favourite, so anything paranormal too! I also enjoy a good psychological twist (Shutter Island-esq). Some of my favourite authors right now: Sager, Perkins, Foley, King, Stine, Riggs, Rowling. Hope this gives a good description of my Bookish taste 👅😂 (edited) 3y
BookishTrish I am wide open. I love: horror, all YA, fantasy, cosy mysteries. Do we want to all pick a book on the same theme - is that what you propose Shelley? I‘m game. 3y
ShelleyBooksie @BookishTrish - I was thinking that however it seems all of our tastes are very similar so I'm thinking we pick 4 that we each want to read and go from there? @BeeMagical . @StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego - posted some great suggestions for her reads. 3y

This one was a lot of fun to read with #sundaybuddyread group. It was suspenseful with likable characters and spooky too. Kitty was a strong female lead. This took place in an asylum where Kitty works as a nurse. Of course, she starts to investigate the hauntings and question how the men are being treated by the doctors. A great read. #audiobook #bookhangover

Read for #sundaybuddyread for August, I really enjoyed this spooky ghostly book, set in a house turned into an asylum for WWI veterans suffering from PTSD. Kitty is on the run from her past & fakes her way into hiding out there, pretending she is a nurse & finds that bad things are happening at Portis House. I liked the characters, gothic vibe, atmospheric setting & all the twists. It kept me absorbed & is in my top favorites from the author. 👻🖤

JaclynW @Sargar114 A mini-series would be so good!! 3y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie For reals about the old fashioned lavs. 😉☠️👻☠️ 3y
JaclynW I really liked the ending of this book. It was very satisfying after the horrors that took place. The Gothic feel was done well. I like so many of the characters too - Matron, Nina, Kitty, Jack, the list goes on. They all played their role and made an impact to the story. Nicely written and un-putdownable kind of book. 3y
DebinHawaii Really enjoyed it, the vibe, characters & all the twists. I am excited to read the pictured book next year as there was an excerpt of it at the end of my Kindle edition of this book & it looks good. I am going to read Broken Girls before that since I missed it too @rjsthumbelina & I have it in my Kindle #TBR. Thank you for the always great discussions! 🤗😍 3y
Hooked_on_books I‘m excited to dive into another of hers in a few months! 🎉 I did want to mention that I loved the scene where Kitty was with the guy inspecting and wanting to get into his briefcase and the one soldier (Mabry?) played the “crazy” role to help her. That was just so clever and funny. Loved it! 3y
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books I loved that part too!!! The inmates running the asylum made me LOL as well! 3y
Sargar114 @TheBookHippie I giggled at that turn of phrase as well 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Yes! The inmates running the asylum line made me laugh. Overall I felt this had the most interesting cast of characters of her books and I would've liked a bit more about many of them. I didn't read the Broken Girls with you all so maybe I'll try to squeeze it in during the upcoming spooky season. 3y
mollyrotondo I can‘t wait to read more of her books with the group. I had a very unproductive reading month this August but I still enjoyed reading everyone‘s comments from the past couple of weeks that I was behind. My favorite part was when all of the patients stood up to Syd. It was disappointing that he was such a terrible brother in the end. 3y

Did you like that we found out what happened to everyone at the end ?

I think this is tied for my first choice of Simones books, how do you rate it?

AmyG I was satisfied with the end. I liked this and the Sun Down Motel the best. 3y
Karisa @AmyG 100% agreed! Those have been my tops too from her. For all her books, you know it‘s going to be a fun ride. 3y
Sargar114 I really like how it wrapped up. But with a small opening with the ghost still possibly at Portis House. I still like Broken Girls more, but I think this is second or tied with second with Sun Down (edited) 3y

kspenmoll This was a wonderful read- so much going on & left me guessing. I loved this, Broken Girls & Sundown Motel. Hope she has a new one soon! 3y
vlwelser @kspenmoll it's coming next year sometime. I keep seeing ads. 3y
vlwelser @kspenmoll That wasn't helpful... Here is the book. 3y
vlwelser I have a hard time ranking her books. This is definitely my favorite of her post WWI UK books. It's hard to compare it to Broken Girls or Sundown. 3y
TheBookHippie @vlwelser I agree this and broken girls are favorites for differing reasons. 3y
Kimberlone Best of the historical mysteries I‘ve read, but I‘ve not tried any of her more recent books 3y
rjsthumbelina I loved the gothic tones with this one. I love nothing more than a Gothic-feeling haunted house. Not sure how I'd rate it, but it wins extra points for that reason 3y
JaclynW @rjsthumbelina I also loved the Gothic tones. 3y
JaclynW This is for sure one of my favorites from St. James. It *may* be my number one - for sure in the top two. And like with others, Broken Girls and Sundown Motel are closely linked to my top favorites. 3y
DebinHawaii I‘ll say it again…I MUST read Broken Girls!!! I think The Sun Down Motel still has the edge over this one but it‘s close & my favorite from her books set in this era. 3y
Hooked_on_books I thought it was terrific. Great story and setting, so well crafted. I‘ve liked everything I‘ve read from her. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This was enjoyable, but maybe 3rd in a tight race behind Inquiry and The Sun Down Motel. I felt that the end here was too tidy in how everyone factored into the shady business of Portis House and I guessed a bit of the outcome this time around. 3y
mollyrotondo I really liked this one a lot. I think I‘d rank my top three as Inquiry, Broken Girls, and Silence. Although I loved Sundown and Lost Among the Living too. And Maddy Clare was super scary. I just love them all!!! 3y
RedxoHearts I really liked it! I will definitely have to read more of Simone St. James books but I don't know which one to go with first 3y

😱👻 so he‘s still haunting it?! Or it descended into the “marsh” totally?! Can a place hold the horror?

AmyG Why take a chance? I‘d have that place leveled. What‘s still with the mold? 3y

Sargar114 Absolutely not going back!!! I feel like it‘s a good way to come back and use this as a location in future stories though. 3y

kspenmoll I would destroy it too. Felt like its soil was malevolent & such evil happened there. 3y
vlwelser This book reminded me of that Spanish movie The Orphanage. Just throwing that out there. 3y
vlwelser She should write a follow up book where modern people have to deal with this crazy ghost. 3y
rjsthumbelina I think sometimes places do kind of absorb the evil that's been done there. Or maybe it's just that it's haunting to know that something so terrible took place there. Without any resolution for Nils' ghost, I hope that the house just rots away, even as beautiful as it seemed. But @vlwelser I see where you're coming from - could make for a great sequel! 3y
JaclynW @vlwelser A follow up could be interesting... 3y
JaclynW Like I said, burn the house down. It needs a good cleansing. 3y
DebinHawaii Yes, the decay, the mold, evil ghost, that house has really bad juju & should be burned or destroyed. 😱 3y
DanaManiac I think it‘s still haunted and would never go back!! 3y
TheBookHippie @DanaManiac Right he‘s there just roaming around 😱 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Poppa Gersbsch is still creeping around the crumbling mansion and this might be one spooky site I pass up, despite its name sounding like one of my favorite bands. This can be where the British government tests a bomb or something. 3y
mollyrotondo That guy is too evil to just move on to the other side. And the place just continues to rot. They definitely need to demolish the site and uproot the soil too just be safe. How deep do you have to dig to extract evil? 3y
RedxoHearts I was wondering if they would do something to put a final end to the evil in the house so no one could get hurt again from it...like burn it down 3y
TheBookHippie @RedxoHearts I was hoping they‘d level it to the ground .. 3y

Paulus with the men afterwards. Smart? Relief?
Archie, West, Mabry. Gave them some life?

AmyG Ahhhh, I have no clue. 3y
Karisa I loved it! Made me lol. After all they‘d been through, they deserved to just laze around like young men. You go boys!😂 3y
Sargar114 In a way, now they‘re all veterans after going through that. 3y
See All 10 Comments
kspenmoll Thought that was great, to have them together living as wounded but real men supporting each other hopefully. 3y
vlwelser I thought this made Paulus look less harsh. There isn't really anything wrong with most of these guys when they aren't possessed by ghosts. I mean PTSD sucks and all that but most of them seem like they could function in the world and not need to be locked up. 3y
rjsthumbelina I loved that this was the ending that some of the men got! Having each other as support is likely to go a long way. Glad they get a chance to live as 'normal' citizens 3y
JaclynW I loved this. Them just hanging out, being NORMAL. Wow. And the love/support that they gave to each other. ❤️ 3y
DebinHawaii I liked that time for them & hopefully those who needed it got better help in a better place. (That‘s what my heart wants to believe—but was there really a better institution or asylum back then?!) I guess like one of them said (I forget who) maybe they at least got transferred to a place that didn‘t make them more traumatized. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This made me laugh and I loved it! I was glad to see that a few of the men had a chance to experience some normalcy. I picked up a feeling that maybe Anna was interested in West (maybe it was the bringing him breakfast line) so if he's not finding love just yet, at least he can have some fun. 3y
mollyrotondo So released that some of these men got to be a support system for each other so that they could experience some normal post war living. They do seem like they could function in society with some support. That‘s why veterans societies are important nowadays and need to be better funded. 3y

AmyG Quite sad about Mikael. Not everyone is meant to go to war. Are ghosts ever at rest? Who knows? 3y
Karisa I was glad for Mikael Not sure about ghosts irl. I kind of like thinking it‘d work like Neil Gaiman‘s gods in American Gods—powered by belief of the living. 3y
Sargar114 @Karisa that‘s an interesting theory. Mikael‘s story was so sad, gad he got some redemption in the end. 3y
See All 14 Comments
kspenmoll So sad for Mikael & so glad he was freed. Ghosts? Hard to grasp for me 3y
vlwelser Poor Mikael. 3y
rjsthumbelina Mikael deserved better than what he got in life. Abusive father, made fun of in the war for being different, dishonorably discharged, then sacrificed by a father who could never love him! The only descriptions that we got from those that knew him in life were of how sweet and caring he was. You can only hope that he can be at peace knowing he saved his sister from their father's wrath 3y
DebinHawaii Yes, I hope he is at peace by saving Anna. In real life I am not sure how much I believe. I do feel like there can at least be restless or charged energy of people left behind but I don‘t know what the extent of that looks like & if there is resolution & rest for that energy. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
Hooked_on_books I don‘t believe in ghosts, but I‘ve definitely heard the theory of them being unrested dead and it makes sense. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Mikael had a sad story. Given that a huge majority of ghost stories are about harm & fear, it makes sense for them to be evil and/or unsettled spirits. I mean, where's the friendly ghost who slips your lunch into your purse when you're forgetting it? Why am I not hearing about a ghost who does the dishes for me while I'm at work? 3y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick OHHH Can I have the dishes ghost? 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Sure! I want one that cleans the floor or shower, so if you find one, send it haunting my way. 3y
mollyrotondo @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick yes!!!! I need a ghost who will clean the bathroom and grab things for me off of high shelves please!! 3y
mollyrotondo I felt so bad for Mikael. He couldn‘t rest because he felt like a failure and his father couldn‘t rest because he was so angry. I think ghosts are the dead who cannot find rest whether they were good people or bad people irl. I am so glad Mikael has peace now after saving his sister. He seemed like a much better brother than Syd. 3y

Creeton - IT WAS MABRY!! But Creeton was truly mad, yes? Your thoughts?

AmyG Yes, I think Creeton was a bit damaged and mad. I didn‘t see that with Mabry. 3y
Karisa @AmyG I didn‘t see it coming with Mabry either. Love how St.James set up the strong/weak idea then seemed to thumb her nose at it with that one. 3y
Sargar114 That surprised me too. Then again, Mandy was more sentimental so in a way it‘s not surprising. Well done! 3y
See All 12 Comments
kspenmoll Creeton between the war & his parents, was damaged & not sure if he is redeemable. Marby also took me by surprise but then so much of this book did! 3y
AmyG I think all that business calling him Captain was a ruse to make us think he was a “good guy”. 3y
vlwelser I'm not sure I totally understand what happened here. Was he possessed all along or did the ghost use whomever was most convenient? I liked Marbry. I'm going to go ahead and continue to blame it all on the evil ghost. 3y
Kimberlone @vlwelser I was also a bit confused, but thought it was more of the ghost possessing him than him actually being evil 3y
rjsthumbelina I agree - Mabry succumbed to the ghost right when the ghost needed him. He was always susceptible, with the nosebleeds and how much he loved his children and wanted to see them. He was kind of a foil for Gersbach in that way. It felt like the ghost intentionally left him alone so that no one would expect that the ghost would take possession of him then. I loved that Mabry had a pension established for Roger 3y
rjsthumbelina I felt so bad for Creeton at the end - his parents reminded me of the parenting style of Nils (read: emotionally and physically abusive, child can't ever measure up to unrealistic expectations). He knew he'd never be good enough, not even to be the ghost's sacrifice 3y
DebinHawaii Yes, it seemed Gersbach‘s ghost jumped to Mabry to get the “assignment” done & get his sacrifice & it was possession rather than him being evil. I think basically he was a good person who understands right & wrong who felt the guilt of what he did while possessed & is more “redeemable” in most ways than Creeton. He went for Kitty‘s ideas to help make amends for Roger & to help Anna too. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I still see Creeton as a bad guy (if a bit sympathetic) and Mabry as a good guy. The way they treated others while possessed vs how they treated people when they we're themselves make me confident that whatever demons are there, we saw them for who they are. Mabry seems caring (family, pension, kind) and Creeton was happy to intimidate Kitty right from the get go. 3y
mollyrotondo The ghost took advantage of both Mabry and Creeton. Creeton was angry and depressed for being rejected by his parents and would have succumbed to the ghost in order to prove he was strong. Mabry was kind hearted and sensitive hence the nose bleeds. But he tried to make amends in the end once the ghost left his body. 3y

ANNA! She‘s ALIVE! Wowie. Her father is possessing people! Anna killed him. Do you think she‘s damaged mentally forever ? Think after time she‘ll recover?

AmyG I think it helped her knowing her father‘s ghost is now gone...and that part comes to an end. I hope she can move on with her life as she has suffered some serious trauma. 3y
Karisa @AmyG Yes, agreed. She‘s lost so much. Glad that Maisie will be there for her. Her journey was a bit of a stretch but still rooting for the character too 3y
Sargar114 @amyg, I don‘t think his ghost is gone, remember she warned Kitty not to go back? 3y
See All 18 Comments
Sargar114 What a sad situation. Also sad to think it was very likely her story wouldn‘t be believed (self defense) and she likely would have been convicted, so running was really her only choice. Given the times, I doubt she‘ll ever recover mentally. Guessing Maisey will take care of her the rest of her life. 3y
kspenmoll I too am glad she has Maisie. I think she will have a difficult time & maybe never heal totally from the trauma she suffered, given the times as @Sargar114 said. 3y
AmyG @Sargar114 Ah, yes….I see what she was saying. I wouldn‘t go back anyway-Ha! That place is frightening. 3y
vlwelser Poor Anna. I think/hope that Maisey will help her. I was actually surprised that she hadn't been hiding there somewhere the entire time. 3y
Kimberlone I was definitely surprised by her arrival the the story! Seems like at the same bf of the book, though, she is one of the most damaged characters still 3y
rjsthumbelina I think Anna was stuck in survival mode (like fight or flight) for so long that recovery will be difficult. Especially after watching her brother being killed and then killing her father! Then having to relive it in order to save the patients and staff of Portis House from her father's ghost! His ghost definitely isn't gone - he never got his sacrifice. I thought it was sad that they left the beautiful house to decay into ruin. I wanted the ⬇️ 3y
rjsthumbelina ⬆️...house to get kind of a redemption arc! 3y
JaclynW I am glad that Anna has Maisie. I think she will need her to get through life. I can't imagine the mental trauma she has to live with. That's a lit for anyone. But to some degree, she has pulled herself together. First, for her mother. Then for the patients. She wants to make a difference I think and be of use. Maybe to make up for killing her father? The childhood traumas? @amyg @karisa @Sargar114 @kspenmoll @vlwelser @Kimberlone @rjsthumbelina 3y
JaclynW I wish the dad's ghost was gone. I also would have loved that house to continue living its glory days. So creepy that it's still rotting with the evil spirit. It needs to be burned down! 3y
DebinHawaii I don‘t think that is something you really recover from —the abuse she suffered (“he did enough” to him executing her brother to killing him. It seems she goes a lot on autopilot to just get through life, but hopefully Maisey will take care of if her & help her. Definitely no one should go back to that house which is sad. I agree with @JaclynW it needs to be burnt down. 😱 3y
DanaManiac I think Anna is damaged for good. Whatever she insinuated regarding what her father did to her…I don‘t even want to imagine. Then having her dad kill her brother and having to kill him in turn to save her own life?? That‘s A LOT. 3y
Hooked_on_books She‘s held up extraordinarily to this point, so I think she‘ll be ok. But she also knows her dad‘s ghost is still around, so she can never quite let her guard down. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think Anna will be well enough for a simple life with her friend & companion Maisey. She'll likely have nightmares and periods of depression, but I think she'll be able to function well with some time and distance. 3y
mollyrotondo Maisey will help her but it might take a long time to really recover from that trauma. The important thing is she is not alone. 3y
RedxoHearts That's probably something Anna would have to deal with for a long time. Though it makes me sad that even back then she would have to be on the run because they wouldn't believe her. They would have taken the dad's side especially then. Hopefully she eventually would have started over in some new country and a simple life. 3y

Matron never wrote Kitty up. Wow. What are the final thoughts on Matron? Is she stern but love. How much better did Kitty fair because of how Matron was?

AmyG Matron turned out to be a bit of a good egg. Just tough. 3y
kspenmoll Matron surprised me when there were no reports in the briefcase- compassionate & disciplined. 3y
Karisa I love it when a curmudgeonly character turns out to be lovable after all. 3y
See All 17 Comments
Sargar114 I knew Matron would be good after all. I was really happy about that. Practical through and through. 3y
vlwelser I wasn't actually surprised by this. And I don't think putting a little fear into Kitty was such a bad thing. She does seem to run amok a bit. 3y
rjsthumbelina Matron was another person whom we never got all the answers about. I would totally read a book about Matron's past! 3y
JaclynW @rjsthumbelina I could too!! I ended up really liking her. 3y
JaclynW @AmyG @kspenmoll @karisa @Sargar114 @vlwelser @rjsthumbelina I ended up really liking Matron. She has such a tough exterior but seems like a super caring teddy bear inside. And she has lived a life of hardships, she carries a lot of wisdom around with her. 3y
kspenmoll @JaclynW Yes, re: Matron! well said!!! 3y
DebinHawaii I was liking Matron from the second section so no a surprise once we learned more about her. I thought she started out the book with a slight Nurse Ratched vibe but she ended up as a gruff/tough & rule making but caring Professor Minerva McGonagall character in my head. 3y
DanaManiac @Karisa Same here! I mean, it would‘ve been weird if she knew Kitty was lying about being a nurse and then was just nice outright. She cared but also had a lot of responsibility. 3y
Hooked_on_books The one thing I would have liked Matron to have changed is the threats. She obviously felt she needed to threaten, but if someone assumes they‘ll be losing their job anyway, they often tend to get sloppy and even vindictive, which in a health care setting is dangerous. Otherwise, she was a-ok in the end. 3y
Karisa @DanaManiac That‘s a good point. Also, women in those days probably were not given those opportunities as much. More pressure to perform? 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I liked the journey we went on with Matron. Way harsh matron, firm but fair, human, then finally a kind woman. She needed the nursing help so Matron tested Kitty & she passed. I think it would've went differently if Kitty was an idiot, but she was determined to put forth an honest effort and passed the tests. I liked her comments to Kitty about getting married and becoming a ninny. 🤣 3y
TheBookHippie @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I ended up liking her so much. 3y
mollyrotondo I really liked Matron as the story progressed. She started out really hard but as we got to see her in action I realized she wasn‘t a bad person at all. Some jobs require a little toughness in order to get the best out of workers but that isn‘t always a bad thing. I really liked her a lot and I thought it was great that she took the three young nurses with her to her new job. 3y
katy4peas I really liked her thru the whole book and I‘m glad she grew and ended up in a good place. 3y

Nils Gersbach, the ghost.
Mikeal was bullied in the war. Horribly so. Shot in the head. Father shot in heart.
Mom died. Whew.

Is it a story that you thought of for our ghosts ?

Maiseys dad. In on it. How awful …corruption. Money.

It‘s a lot of moving pieces 🤯 did it St James tell the story well?

AmyG I had noclue what happened to the Gersbachs. It was all very sad. I feel bad for Maisey...about her father. 3y
kspenmoll Great story- clueless me all the way though. Felt sad for the son( what an evil dad) & Maisey too re: her dad. 3y
Sargar114 I had a feeling someone was still alive, but I had thought they were living in the house the entire time. What a terribly sad story. I thought it was really well done and really supported the overall story very nicely. Agin, St James is so good at blending the horrors of actual people and the supernatural. 3y
See All 14 Comments
vlwelser I felt bad for Maisey and Anna. Clearly both fathers were awful in their own very different ways. 3y
rjsthumbelina @Sargar114 exactly what you said. I knew the person alive was Anna, but thought she had been hiding out in the house. I didn't expect that the dad was quite as horrible as he turned out to be. St. James doesn't normally go for the villain characters without some explanatory backstory for why they act the way they do. I was wondering how this guy got to be so horrible. I wish we'd gotten more insight into the Gersbachs 3y
JaclynW @rjsthumbelina I wasn't expecting the dad to be that horrible either. Yikes. What a sad story when it all came together! I also figured it was the mom or sister that survived, but not both. Felt so bad for Anna! @vlwelser @Sargar114 @amyg @kspenmoll The trauma that the son went through too. Ugh! How awful. 3y
DebinHawaii I felt like the father was the evil & may have killed the son but didn‘t think it was an execution—I thought an altercation or Mikeal was protecting his sister. I did think Mikeal was just a lost spirit/soul & not evil & that Anna was alive. I think overall it was done well—the reveal & the twists but I would have liked more insight into the family. Maisey‘s father‘s role was a good twist. There was a definite bad/evil father theme in this one! (edited) 3y
DanaManiac There were a lot of pieces to assemble at the end. I also felt like the dad being evil seemed random. No origin story, just a family with a horrible father/husband whose terribleness is so bad it continues after death…? 🧐 3y
TheBookHippie @DanaManiac it seems she has loose ends in every story I often wonder if she‘ll go back to them later . This would be a good one to continue! 3y
Hooked_on_books She told this story so well. And it was all too common in that era to have these toxic responses, sadly. There are still components of our society that do. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Yay! I got some of the Gersbach's story right, especially that Nils was evil! I feel there were lots of loose ends and hints that were glossed over & tidied up a little easily, but overall I enjoyed the story arc. 3y
mollyrotondo I think it was told well especially to have the comparison between her abusive father and the Gersbach father. And another war torn young man rejected by his family like the patients in Portis House. I thought it all worked well I just didn‘t connect it all myself 😂 3y
RedxoHearts I had guessed that either the mom or the daughter eventually took him out once they hit their breaking points. 3y
katy4peas I liked the sad story being tied to Portis house and thought the connection worked well. Still have background questions about the family though. 3y

Jack and Kitty. Jack changing his clothes in front of her! OY vey. THEN THE KISS. “I wanted to kiss you like a man.”

Readers we have our long awaited for CRINGE!

What did you think? THEN after all the ruckus SHE goes to his room … ack it was so ….bad. Thoughts? Or is this just a thing. Bad love scenes on purpose?!

AmyG I knew it was coming. Her sex scenes are quite cringeworthy. Her main female characters all seem so sex starved. 😳 3y
kspenmoll She should just leave the scenes out and maybe just have it insinuated. 3y
Karisa 😂😂😂 🤦🏻‍♀️ 3y
See All 26 Comments
Karisa I think it‘s part of St. James‘ charm at this point. That would be an interesting question to ask her at an author talk. I nominate @TheBookHippie to be the one to ask. 😂 3y
Sargar114 I would say of all the cringeworthy sex scenes…this one was probably the least terrible. I‘m glad she abandoned the romance angles in her more modern novels. 3y
TheBookHippie @Karisa 😂😂😂😂 3y
vlwelser I think this is just something we expect now. Maybe the author's being cheesy on purpose. The description of the nightgown was something else. Maybe we are supposed to realize how innocent she actually is. 3y
vlwelser I also agree with @Sargar114 this is slightly less terrible than the others we have read. She seems to have abandoned this format for her more recent novels. I'm excited to read the new one. 3y
rjsthumbelina I was totally waiting for it. I knew it would end up happening in Jack's private room! 🤣 I really enjoy the romance plots as part of her older books, just not the cringy sex scenes 3y
Kimberlone This one was way less cringe than in the others! Maybe the romance was better built up? Kitty‘s lack of experience makes it seem a bit far fetched she would just immediately go to that action. 3y
TheBookHippie @Kimberlone Right?! Oy 👀 3y
TheBookHippie @rjsthumbelina it has to be purposeful at least I hope so 😂 3y
JaclynW @vlwelser @Sargar114 @Kimberlone I also thought this was slightly less cringey than other scenes in other books. But still. Awkward. 😬 @TheBookHippie @rjsthumbelina @karisa @kspenmoll @amyg I'm thinking St. James is totally serious about her sex scenes and she tries her best. I'm embarrassed for her. Parts of them are fine, but they almost always take a wrong turn. Isn't an editor supposed to help with this? 3y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW I hope this doesn‘t reflect her sex knowledge or sex life 😱 or experience 👀 3y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie Yes... I was thinking that same thing. Poor dear if so. 😳😬 3y
DebinHawaii 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 to all of this—especially @TheBookHippie as her the questions about the sex scenes. @Karisa We knew it was coming & while awkward, I agree it wasn‘t quite as cringy as the others so far. Although the “this is going to be fun” comment was pretty cringy as it seemed out of place for the times & characters. 3y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW could be you wouldn‘t think so but I meet so many people with no clue or knowledge on how to enjoy any of it 😩 3y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii it‘s always our comic relief but it could be meant to be real romance !!! I hope not 😂 3y
DanaManiac I have come to think of it as comical because it‘s too cringeworthy to take it seriously lol 3y
Hooked_on_books It wasn‘t nearly as bad as the sex scenes in the last one we read. And I‘m glad she shifted their relationship away from nurse and patient before going there. That was important to do. At least it was a brief scene! 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Rather spontaneous in the chain of events? Yes. Totally expected? Absolutely. Cringey? Not really. Given her issues, it was good that she went to him to initiate, they had some playful banter, and he's proved that he is absolutely in his right mind. On the semi-awkward sex scale, this was mild and she thankfully didn't take us through the details of Kitty's full maiden voyage. St James is showing growth! 🤣 3y
mollyrotondo I agree with everyone that it definitely was not as bad as the last book we read by her. But it was still awkward. I mean that line about this is going to be fun was just so made up and showing how much she doesn‘t know when he reveals that they can have sex with her on top. I mean why did we need that said? I mean I guess to show that he is going giving her control which is of course very nice but it‘s just awkward to say in a book 😂 3y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I was laughing til I snout fell over 😂😂😂🤣 however I‘ve mentored girls who have zero clue intercourse causes pregnancy so😱🤯😳🤦🏻‍♀️ 3y
RedxoHearts The amount of people who don't understand how babies come about always astonish me. That or other random weird things people think when it comes to that or health related things that should be simple. My mom is a nurse. I definitely couldn't be because I couldn't make my face stop saying what my mouth was trying not too 😂 3y
katy4peas Oh boy. I‘m glad it was short and less awkward than in Maddy Clare, but it could have been left out. At least there was only one scene. 🤦‍♀️ 3y

Mr. Deighton ..

Mabry helping Kitty get her file.

Childress conduit to the ghost.

ON THE WALL “I AM NOT A COWARD”

Archie “He told me someone is going to DIE”

What did you think? How quickly were you figuring out the ending or did you just read?

Seriously no clue about all the beef tea😂🤷🏻‍♀️

AmyG I like the revealing, slowly, of info that leads to the conclusion. I am usually horible at figuring out the secrets. I got something correct as I did think one of the family members was alive. 3y
kspenmoll I was totally unable to guess or figure out the ending. Agree with @AmyG in liking the slow reveal of info. I enjoyed not knowing! Loved that she was able to nab the file out of Deighton‘s briefcase. Lots of collaboration between nurse/men. (edited) 3y
kspenmoll The whole “ I am not a coward” theme was so so sad but real for that war. I did not expect it to be central to the ghosts etc 3y
See All 22 Comments
Karisa @kspenmoll Agreed! Not knowing where this one was going made it all the more fun to read. 3y
Sargar114 I loved not being able to really figure it out. I think we got bits and pieces but never the whole thing. St James is so great at blending the supernatural and human causes to creepiness. Once the pandemic hit, I stopped trying to figure it out and just went along for the ride. It was so much going on that it was easier that way. 3y
Karisa @Sargar114 👏👏👏 3y
kspenmoll @Sargar114 Yes this whole creepiness & blending supernatural with humans her expertise! 3y
vlwelser Lol. The beef tea is slightly fascinating. I think now we make chicken soup. 3y
vlwelser I got sidetracked by the beef tea.... I thought this was sort of funny. The supposedly crazy person pretending to be crazy to create a distraction. Brilliant. 3y
rjsthumbelina @kspenmoll I agree. "I am not a coward" was kind of heartbreaking, especially mixed in with these men whose minds were broken by war. 3y
rjsthumbelina Did we get real answers as to who Mr. Deighton was and what his role actually was? Maybe I glossed over it in trying to unravel the rest of the mystery 3y
JaclynW @rjsthumbelina I was unsatisfied with the resolution with Mr. Dighton too. I wanted more detail. 3y
JaclynW @AmyG @kspenmoll @Sargar114 @rjsthumbelina @karisa @vlwelser As most of you said above, the slow reveal was great. St. James is so good at making you wonder the entire time and then BOOM - the pieces begin to come together so nicely. The creep factor is always high. 3y
JaclynW @kspenmoll Agreed about the "I am not a coward" part. So sad. Do you think this is any better these days with the trauma our soldiers face? 3y
kspenmoll @JaclynW I think there are more services for Vets but not enough. I imagine it may be difficult for a soldier to find out he/she she does like being one or is terrified. I have no clue though 3y
DebinHawaii I had parts of it for sure & was convinced Anna was alive. I did think there was more of a human hand in the men‘s state of minds—that there was something going on with experimentation or something. Deighton was a bit unsatisfying—I had the impression he was maybe the “face” of the clinic but not the mastermind (which seemed more like Maisey‘s father) if keeping the men there & collecting the money from their rich families. It seems like there⬇️ 3y
DebinHawaii …would have been a bigger “end game” than that to make the whole thing worthwhile & offset the costs of the upkeep, staff, keeping Anna & her mother away while supporting them, etc.. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
Sargar114 @rjsthumbelina @JaclynW I don‘t think we ever got a resolution about him. I think there was a small blurb saying he fled the country from embezzlement or something like that but I think that was it 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Captain Mabry to rescue! I love that he was just like, OK. You need a ruse, you'll get your ruse. 🤣 3y
mollyrotondo I knew the father and son were the ghosts but I didn‘t know what their story could possibly be. I also thought the doctors had more to do with the mystery than they really did. Once the reveals started coming I just went with the flow. This one was harder to figure out as we read the entire book. I liked that it focused more on the men‘s trauma throughout because that was the main point of the book. 3y
katy4peas I went with the flow and really had no idea. I liked that Matron ended up good tho. I did think the overall ending was a bit rushed in tying up all of the loose ends and I was waiting for Syd to come back and try to bring Kitty home again. 3y

INFLUENZA?! We can‘t escape the pandemics ! Test fluids BEEF tea? Lemons. Open windows change sheets. Matron call the hospital get evacuated?!
Maisey arrives…with THE STORY?!

Did you read more quickly this last part?

This clearly written long ago did you catch they talked of different strains of it? 🤯

Beef Tea Recipe: An Ancient Health Remedy | Organic Facts
https://www.organicfacts.net/beef-tea.html

kspenmoll I had no idea that beef tree was a real remedy ! Thanks for article. 3y
AmyG I assumed it was beef broth. No thank you! Of course influnza hit. When life gets hard...something makes it harder. 3y
kspenmoll This whole part was interesting given the fact that we are in the midst of a pandemic. Such a scary time for them all- esp with Matron getting it! Just her unavailability for a short time shows how her personality & structure kept the “inmates” under control. It brought out the best in some characters/ not the best in others. 3y
See All 26 Comments
Sargar114 I thought so too @AmyG 3y
Karisa It was like “🤦🏻‍♀️ 1919. How did I not see that coming?” 😂 That twist literally stopped me in my audio walking tracks. It did allow for the intensity and lack of control needed to resolve the book with Jack/Kitty/Mabry more in the center of it all. 3y
Sargar114 It‘s interesting to think if we read this a couple of years ago, this part of the story may not have as big an impact. Now it just adds to the scariness of the story and was so believable. I loved how Matron remained strong and giving direction and leadership during this time. 3y
vlwelser I agree with @Sargar114 we see this pandemic part of the story through a new lens. This might not have stuck out if we read this 2 years ago. 3y
rjsthumbelina @Sargar114 I agree - that part becomes scarier and more real to us because we are living through a pandemic. @Karisa I was wondering how she was going to pull off changing the dynamics to the point that Kitty and Jack could be together. Have to say, I didn't expect the Spanish flu to be the answer! 3y
Kimberlone I would be so down for some beef tea when I am sick. Soup is life. 3y
Kimberlone I was also very surprised when the Spanish flu twist happened. I thought jt worked real well to add another element of chaos to the climax of the book. 3y
JaclynW This was an exciting part of the book. I definitely zoomed through it. Like @Sargar114 said, having lived through a pandemic, you for sure look at these parts in books differently now. It really hits you. I thought the flu addition helped gel the story. It brought out the strentghts of each character and moved the story along nicely. 3y
DebinHawaii Yes to all of this. It was a good way to move the story to its conclusion & I agree it makes it even more scary & a standout with our current pandemic situation. 😱 3y
Hooked_on_books Given the timing of the book, the entry of flu was not at all surprising to me and anchored the story in true events of the time. And I realize “beef tea” is really a form of broth, but that phrasing makes me 🤢 3y
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books what made me 😱 was when we first shut down with Covid and we‘re heading to the store my great aunt told us to stock up on beef broth, beef stock and bouillon, and get chicken if no beef 🤯 my grandma did that too, onions and beef broth … just bonkers. 3y
TheBookHippie @DebinHawaii Right? We had to know it was coming -1919 after all 😷 3y
Hooked_on_books It‘s amazing what sticks in the memory, isn‘t it? Kids now when they get to some future circumstance that‘s similar will urge people to buy toilet paper! 3y
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books RIGHT?! Hilarious. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Like @Karisa I was like "Oh crap! Well, we were warned!" I was also fine thinking that beef tea was just beef broth but now I'm picturing Kitty & Nina stirring cups of hot water with beef skewers. ? Adding the threat of the flu did amp up the intensity, and I liked it. Scary when the threats are both real and supernatural. 3y
mollyrotondo I was like oh no a pandemic. As they were collecting people to move out i was like “put a mask on” and “everyone wash your hands”. I was stressed and surprised that this happened in the book but by it brought a new level of tension to the story. 3y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I was over here yelling WASH YOUR HANDS 😅 3y
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie is some ways that‘s a good thing but in other ways I‘ve grown more paranoid 😂 3y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I was paranoid anyway😅 with autoimmune you live this way as a rule. Reading it here stressed me out! 😂😂🤪 3y
RedxoHearts I've heard of it and similar broths used for home remedies here in the South. But luckily my family didn't. I'd have to go on just being sick if that was my option. Ew ☠ 3y
RedxoHearts Yeah I was up at 3 am finishing this book on the day I did. I couldn't sleep so I had to lol 3y
katy4peas Oh, it definitely made it more real and sped up the story for me. 3y

The dreams. Coward. Smoke. Naked. Frail. The weak … Are some people easier to take over than others? Can everyone be - or are some people too strong in nature? What do you think?

kspenmoll I think their are people who are more sensitive, able to be receptors, not quite strong enough to withstand a “ takeover” of someone or something else.Others are more aware of outside forces, do not believe in anything like that, or are strong enough to withstand such things, especially if combined energy with others. 3y
AmyG Exactly what @kspenmoll said. 3y
Sargar114 Agree completely @kspenmoll @AmyG 3y

Karisa I think we‘d all like to believe we are part of the strong group, and that‘s part of the appeal. 3y
rjsthumbelina I don't think that Archie was so susceptible because he was weak. He seemed to be so sensitive to the feelings around him. I think that was more of the difference. It explains why Creeton was also so manipulated by the ghost. He pretended to not care about the feelings of the people in his life, but really he cared so deeply about how others saw him. 3y
Kimberlone It definitely seems to be a ghost story trope for the “weak” to be more susceptible to possession or influence by the supernatural 3y
DebinHawaii I think Archie was more sensitive & empath than “weak” but I do feel like some personalities have more barriers they can/do erect than can help them withstand more. (edited) 3y
Hooked_on_books I agree with what others are saying about sensitive rather than weak. Although I‘m sure there are some who buy into toxic masculinity who prefer to reference it as weakness. 3y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I agree, some are more susceptible than others, and in this instance it seems to stem from empathy. 3y
mollyrotondo I agree with what everyone said about some people being for sensitive but definitely not weak. This ghost also seemed super strong to be able to jump from body to body. 3y
RedxoHearts It definitely seems like a common theme all around that people struggling more with their own inner issues are more susceptible 3y
katy4peas It takes them a while to figure out this is what the ghost means by “weak” but I agree. 3y

Very long week & long day but I did manage to get by the monthly craft market by my house & hit up the dim sum table for my radish cakes & shrimp-chive dumplings & taro puffs. So it‘s a couch blanket dinner 😋 while I read the final chapters of this one for #sundaybuddyread Hopefully I stay awake & can squeeze in some time for Persuasion posts for #PemberLittens #chapteraday too. So much work & life stuff interfering with my book time lately.😬

CarolynM Those radish cakes look fantastic! Just like my friend's mum used to make. I've never had a bought one anything like as good! Enjoy. 3y
DebinHawaii @CarolynM These are very good—better than some restaurant versions I‘ve had so I go specifically to get them each month, but I have never had a homemade one. 3y
nanuska_153 It's just me, or the way you put the food on the plate really makes it look like the cookie monster? 3y

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Sooo…the equivalent of bullion cubes in water today or drinking broth? Which they still recommend sometimes when you have to be on a liquid diet for some illnesses or a cold with little appetite? Maybe 🤔 3y
slategreyskies My hubby likes beef tea, but we just have a couple of jars of Bovril in the cabinet. A spoonful added to hot water equals instant beef tea. No cooking rump meat necessary! 🤣 3y
TheBookHippie @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Growing up we always had beef bouillon/stock when really sick. If we were mildly sick -Jewish Penicillin aka homemade chicken soup with dill. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I never read it in a book before! 🤯 3y

GingerAntics So basically beef broth? 3y
TheBookHippie @GingerAntics RIGHT? 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ 3y
JaclynW @GingerAntics That's exactly what I assumed it was. It doesn't sound all that appetizing. But maybe when you are sick?? I make chicken soup every time someone in my house is sick. @TheBookHippie I swear it works! Chicken soup, wassail, hot toddies, hot tea = good for the sick ones. 💞 3y
GingerAntics @JaclynW it‘s probably bland enough for upset tummies and fairly nutrient rich. 3y
JaclynW @GingerAntics Yes, I'm sure. Good for those that need it. 3y

Pickpick

A very good ghost story with a creepy setting of an isolated mental institution on an island in England in the 1920s. This is probably my favorite of St. James from this time period; 2nd overall from her. She is a must read for me! Looking forward to the final discussion for #sundaybuddyread.

Just after WWI, Kitty is looking for a safe harbor and pretends to be a nurse in order to get a job at a remote house now serving as a mental health hospital for soldiers. After arrival, she is challenged not only by the patients‘ needs but by odd goings-on in the house. This is a well-crafted and paced ghost story with a believable setting. I really liked it. #SundayBuddyRead

BarbaraBB Sounds like a real St James! 3y

By far my favorite of Simone St. James‘s historical mysteries/ghost stories. I loved the setting of post-WWI mental hospital for war veterans, the main character of Kitty (a young woman with a troubled past who has conned her way into a nursing position), the love interest Jack Yates (a conflicted war hero). I thought the resolution to the central mystery worked well, although there was a lack of closure with Kitty‘s family conflict. Spoilers 👇🏼

Kimberlone I would have liked more closure with Kitty‘s conflict with her father/brother and missing mother, but I can also understand her wanting to cut off all ties as a 🖕🏼to them being abusive and terrible to her. 3y
Kimberlone I was also not expecting the Spanish Flu plot twist at all, but I thought it worked really well in ramping up the drama and conflict at the climax of the story. 3y

I really enjoyed Silence for the Dead by Simone St. James. I still have a few questions i wished were answered but for the most part it tied up nicely. Set in WWI at a recovery home for soldiers that were considered unwell after the war. Kitty has come there pretending to be a nurse to escape her past and quickly learns all is not as it seems. There is a little bit of everything in this book mystery, ghosts and even a little romance along the way.

This may be my favorite book by this author that I have read this year. If you enjoy a good ghost story, I definitely recommend this one.
