Strange Weather | Joe Hill
This will be an award-nominated collection of award-nominated novellas: 'Snapshot, 1988' (the only title in the collection which will be previously published) , tells the story of an adolescent in Silicon Valley who finds himself threatened by The Phoenician, a tattooed thug who possesses a Polaroid Instant Camera that swipes memories. The audio edition will be read by Wil Wheaton. In 'Aloft' a young man takes to the skies to experience parachuting for the first time . . . and winds up a castaway on an impossibly solid cloud, a Prospero's island of roiling vapour that seems animated by a mind of its own. The audio edition will be read by Joe Hill. One autumnal day in Boulder, Colorado, the clouds open up in a downpour of nails, splinters of bright crystal that tear apart anyone who isn't safely under cover. 'Hard Rain Gonna Fall' explores this escalating apocalyptic event, as clouds of nails spread out across the country and the world. Amidst the chaos, a girl studying law enforcement takes it upon herself to resolve a series of almost trivial mysteries . . . apparently harmless puzzles that turn out to have lethal answers. The audio edition will be read by Kate Mulgrew. Finally, in 'Loaded' a mall security guard heroically stops a mass shooting and becomes a hero to the modern gun movement. Under the hot glare of the spotlights, though, his story begins to unravel, taking his sanity with it. As a storm of locusts bears down upon his small mid-western town, he reaches for the gun again, and sets out upon a last day of reckoning. The audio edition will be read by Stephen Lang. Beautifully written, they'll form a stand-out collection as well as a great stand-alone stories with appeal for the mainstream as well as the genre reader, and will keep Joe's sales as well as critical profile high between novels.

This was my first Joe Hill read. I liked it but didn't love it. The first story was not my favorite but was narrated by Wil Wheaton which I did enjoy. I liked the stories Loaded and Rain the most.Very odd book though overall and gives me #TeamTheme points for #TeamHendrix. #outstandingoctober @Andrew65

I'm not sure how, but I've started all 4 of these books. Read the first 100 pages and then just lost interest.
🤷🏼
So it must definitely be me...😳
Entering one of those dreaded Reading Slumps 😨

I'm going to keep on trying, in the hopes that somehow I beat it before it really derail my reading.

bthegood Thx for sharing, felt the same way the end of last month, this month I've ditched all heavier reads, felt like I had a few too many in the past few months, sometimes it is the combination of books that weighs me down 😊 1y
Enchanted_Bibliophile @bthegood Maybe I should try something like that. Thanks for the idea! 1y

Finally finished my Halloween read! The 1st story was pretty creepy and drew me in, but I really hated the 2nd story so I was stuck on it for a while (I don't feel the need to read a fictional account of gun lovers killing innocent people, just seems unnecessary and it didn't fit with this collection) the 3rd story was meh but the 4th story drew me back in. This was my first Joe Hill and I'd like to read more from him
@IMASLOWREADER

Danielthewriter Agreed. Overall mixed bag. But he's got several really good books too. I'd recommend his short story collection Full Throttle the most. 2y

Story #4: I don‘t know where he comes up with his stories but his mind must be a fascinating place to be (fascinating and scary). This story deals with rain that becomes crystals that kill and the good and bad that that would bring out in society. Kate Mulgrew narrates and is perfect. So good! +6 points for #teamslaughter #scarathlon2020

Story #3: this is such an interesting, inventive sci fi short story about a man who jumps out of a plane and lands on some sort of mysterious, alien “cloud” that forms things from his mind to try and get him to stay. It‘s also a look at letting go of things/people that aren‘t meant to be. I love Joe Hill! The narrator was good and I enjoyed listening while cleaning so I could get some points for #scarathlon2020 and #littenlisten +6 points!

Story #2: Loaded. Great story about gun ownership and violence, mental illness and the effect military service might have on the psyche of a person returned from active duty, and the immense influence and reach of the media. The audiobook narrator had a great, gravelly voice, perfect for the story. +6 points for #teamslaughter. I‘ll calculate the reading points for my weekly post! #scarathlon2020 @Clwojick

Listening to the audiobook of Strange Weather, a collection of 4 short stories. Story #1: Snapshot (this photo is art from my hardcover copy). A strange, unsettling story about a mysterious camera that can steal memories. Also just a thoughtful study of memory and what we might want to remember and forget. Not my fav Joe Hill but still really good! +6 points for #teamslaughter #scarathlon2020 @Clwojick

Bailedbailed

Some writers are just not for me, and Joe Hill joins that list. I bailed on The Heart Shaped Box a few years back and now this. I got through "Snapshot" and "Loaded" but I have no desire to go further. Reads like bad rejects from the Twilight Zone. Not the classic 60s version or the sometimes excellent 80s version, I'm talking the lame 2000s version hosted by Forrest Whitaker. I won't bother with anymore of his writing, twice burned.

Bookishlie Oh no! I haven‘t read those but I read The Fireman and it was really good. But crazy long. 2y

Finally got to this collection of 4 novellas.Mr. Hill is quite a storyteller! I think of the 4 I liked Aloft the least, blame it more on my taste in fantasy than Hills storytelling ability.Rain struck me to the core , though people die from an extreme weather event rather than a virus, it‘s vividness made it feel oddly parallel to what‘s happening now or an extreme version of now.

🎧 Wil Wheaton & Kate Mulgrew read 2 of the 4 stories & Joe Hill has an afterward. That alone gives it stars. 🙄 No, really, they are great! Definitely 4 solid spooky/creepy short stories. Adult situations & swearing. It really has some lovely vivid descriptions. I‘m glad I own the Audiobook. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/3

Finished my first #NewYearWhoDis book chosen by @vivastory This isn‘t my favorite Joe Hill, but I still enjoyed it. I finished the first story, Snapshot, last week and am still thinking about it. There‘s a lot of nostalgia with Joe Hill‘s writing. We‘re the same age and liked the same things as kids and I just “get” him.
Up next, two of my favorite things - Neil Gaiman and Mythology!

vivastory I'm glad you liked it. I ALMOST added 20th Century Ghosts to my list, because it was definitely a favorite of last year. Looking forward to your thoughts on Norse Mythology 3y

I really wanted to like this, but all the stories felt like they overstayed their welcome, and the subjects are too similar to ‘three moments of an explosion‘ but not done as well. I think my biggest problem with this book was going into it expecting a horror, when none of the stories scared me. If anything, they were mostly upsetting. I suppose upset is still a reaction, so I won‘t mark this collection as a ‘pan‘, it‘s ok.

There are illustrations at the beginning and end of each of the four novellas in Strange Weather, by four different artists. Pretty cool touch.

This was some great horror writing. The second story was tough because it was very realistic, but the other three were the Joe Hill style I dig.

Many many trigger warnings, but of course it‘s horror.

Great read for the Halloween season!

Wow. I just finished the second story in this. That was too real, and not the ending I was hoping for. I may have to take a break from this book. Don‘t get me wrong, the writing is excellent, it‘s just as good as his other books. I was expecting more supernatural horror than real life could-be-true horror. Whew. Intense.

Soubhiville Oh, #Froedrick says “Good Morning.” 😺 3y
madamereadsalot1 Of the 4 stories, that's the only realistic horror. It was intense and hard to read for sure. The rest, as the first, are true to Joe's usual storytelling. The third is probably my favorite. 3y

It was a very emotional read and honestly I was sick and angry over the last chapter. I had trouble sleeping last night because of it. Still, I love Joe Hill and he is one of my favorite writers. I‘m moving on to something else, then I will come back to read the second half.

Sooooo... I ran into a portion of this book that I didn‘t love (to put it mildly). “Loaded” has a brief description of an unarmed black man getting shot and killed by the police. It‘s not necessarily graphic, but I still had to walk away from the book for a week. I still haven‘t seen how it ties in the rest of the narrative, but hopefully, that was there for a reason?

DeeLew I had to go look and see what others had said about Loaded. I don‘t know if you ever finished it but that awful killing does tie into the rest of the story. And the story gets so much worse. It was very well written and I see the point he was trying to make but it was so heart wrenching. I was sick and angry after I finished, pretty much the same way I am about these shootings in real life. 💔 3y
