Strange Weather | Joe Hill
This will be an award-nominated collection of award-nominated novellas: 'Snapshot, 1988' (the only title in the collection which will be previously published) , tells the story of an adolescent in Silicon Valley who finds himself threatened by The Phoenician, a tattooed thug who possesses a Polaroid Instant Camera that swipes memories. The audio edition will be read by Wil Wheaton. In 'Aloft' a young man takes to the skies to experience parachuting for the first time . . . and winds up a castaway on an impossibly solid cloud, a Prospero's island of roiling vapour that seems animated by a mind of its own. The audio edition will be read by Joe Hill. One autumnal day in Boulder, Colorado, the clouds open up in a downpour of nails, splinters of bright crystal that tear apart anyone who isn't safely under cover. 'Hard Rain Gonna Fall' explores this escalating apocalyptic event, as clouds of nails spread out across the country and the world. Amidst the chaos, a girl studying law enforcement takes it upon herself to resolve a series of almost trivial mysteries . . . apparently harmless puzzles that turn out to have lethal answers. The audio edition will be read by Kate Mulgrew. Finally, in 'Loaded' a mall security guard heroically stops a mass shooting and becomes a hero to the modern gun movement. Under the hot glare of the spotlights, though, his story begins to unravel, taking his sanity with it. As a storm of locusts bears down upon his small mid-western town, he reaches for the gun again, and sets out upon a last day of reckoning. The audio edition will be read by Stephen Lang. Beautifully written, they'll form a stand-out collection as well as a great stand-alone stories with appeal for the mainstream as well as the genre reader, and will keep Joe's sales as well as critical profile high between novels.

I‘m honestly not sure how I feel about this... I both liked the characters but hated the...tone? voice? of the author. Definitely had a pulp fiction-y feel to it and maybe that‘s what I‘m disliking? But almost 2 weeks later and I‘m still thinking about some of characters.

There are illustrations at the beginning and end of each of the four novellas in Strange Weather, by four different artists. Pretty cool touch.

This was some great horror writing. The second story was tough because it was very realistic, but the other three were the Joe Hill style I dig.

Many many trigger warnings, but of course it‘s horror.

Great read for the Halloween season!
#BBRC for the Rain category.

Wow. I just finished the second story in this. That was too real, and not the ending I was hoping for. I may have to take a break from this book. Don‘t get me wrong, the writing is excellent, it‘s just as good as his other books. I was expecting more supernatural horror than real life could-be-true horror. Whew. Intense.

Soubhiville Oh, #Froedrick says “Good Morning.” 😺 2mo
madamereadsalot1 Of the 4 stories, that's the only realistic horror. It was intense and hard to read for sure. The rest, as the first, are true to Joe's usual storytelling. The third is probably my favorite. 2mo

@Gissy gave me this one in a holiday swap almost 2 years ago! 😱 My TBR is out of control. But, ‘tis the season for a good scary read, so I‘m starting some Joe this morning! I‘ve liked his other books, so I have high hopes. (Thanks Gissy!) 🎃👻☠️

I have only read the first two novellas in the book. The first one was fantastic. The second one was.... well I have mixed emotions. It was a very emotional read and honestly I was sick and angry over the last chapter. I had trouble sleeping last night because of it. Still, I love Joe Hill and he is one of my favorite writers. I‘m moving on to something else, then I will come back to read the second half.

Soubhiville I had a really hard time with the second one too. It hit too close to home with all the shootings in America. But the other three were more what I was expecting and were great! 2mo

Sooooo... I ran into a portion of this book that I didn‘t love (to put it mildly). “Loaded” has a brief description of an unarmed black man getting shot and killed by the police. It‘s not necessarily graphic, but I still had to walk away from the book for a week. I still haven‘t seen how it ties in the rest of the narrative, but hopefully, that was there for a reason?

DeeLew I had to go look and see what others had said about Loaded. I don‘t know if you ever finished it but that awful killing does tie into the rest of the story. And the story gets so much worse. It was very well written and I see the point he was trying to make but it was so heart wrenching. I was sick and angry after I finished, pretty much the same way I am about these shootings in real life. 💔 3mo

I read this in two halves a few months apart. The ending of Loaded is so powerful and I had to break before continuing pretty much without realising.
Read lots of reviews saying Rain was weaker but I really enjoyed it.
Really loved this collection and interesting reading a favourite author working in a much tighter word length.

This was pretty well written, but not a "pick" because it wasn't quite what I was expecting--mainly because the "horror" and "paranormal" read more like sci-fi. But this is still a solid read for anyone interested in giving collections a try ?

Joe Hill is one of my favorite contemporary horror authors, & a massive TBR is the only reason I have for waiting for over a year to finally read this. What can I say about this collection? Joe Hill has an unswerving dedication to the truth of his narrratives, & this is frequently heartbreaking & infuriatingly honest. He creates characters that matter & as a reader I care about profoundly; they find themselves in terrifying situations, often 👇

vivastory metaphors for the terrors & pains of reality. What is most heartbreaking, & inspiring, is the hope that each character has. In justice, love, a meaningful life. As a reader I found myself rooting for each of these characters, even as they hurtled towards tragedy. 11mo

Four short stories. I enjoyed the 1st about a Polaroid camera that steals memories and the 4th about deadly rain of crystal nails. The other two were a bit disappointing. The second about a mall shooting with a terrible ending and the third about a guy stuck on a cloud which was quirky with an annoying main character.

#WinterWonderland Aubrey Griffin is with some friends in a plane set to memorialize a friend who just died from cancer by skydiving. He doesn‘t want to but the fact that the plane loses power near a suspicious looking cloud doesn‘t give him a choice. He actually lands on the cloud which might be an alien ship. This is the weakest of the four horror stories but I loved it the most as he realized while #WalkingInTheAir how to get over someone.

These four novellas were a mixed bag for me. The first was the best, IMO, a good creepy tale about a very special camera. The second was the most disturbing, and it may take a edit me to recover 😬; the third was lighthearted, not really horror and the last was the most lackluster to me, an apocalypse tale with a King Midas touch. #Spooktober
