Thank you @Eggs for creating this fun play-card 😉👍💝.

1- When I'm working on a project, and that moment when it begins to come together 💫💝.

2- When I bake or cook and my family tells me that it came out deliciously amazing...this makes me feel like a sorceresses 🪄🥘🥧😋. Yeah, I'm wacky like that 😂.

3- tagged book, which I bought to celebrate my first year a Litten 📚🥳💝.

Purchased this to celebrate my first year a Litten 📚🥳.

This was a fun, magical read... absolutely loved this book.

There are a some interesting “guest star“ appearances in this book (fictional characters).

I wanted to share a clip of nearly every page...since that would be seriously illegal 😂LOL, I settled for one of the illustrations.

Although this is a series, the story can standalone.

Deblovestoread I really enjoy this series. 3mo

Thank you @debinhawaii for creating this fun play-card.

1- Got to see the movie, BumbleBee. Can't believe I watched a Transformer movie (my brother was a fan...I never was). When I saw the Volkswagen bug, I couldn't help be reminded of my love for Herbie, The Love Bug...must admit, that I now love Bumblebee too!

2- Found part four of a book series that I'm loving (still reading through the first book). Riley Thorn Mysteries. 👇

AnnCrystal 3- On Tuesday, went grocery shopping. On Thursday, there was a news story about a shooting that was happening across the street from where we were 🙏. Two days after we were there. A joy because no one was killed and no one I know was there. Just scary out there. Be careful in this chaotic world everyone.

4- Finished the book I bought for my first year a Litten! Tagged (review to be posted soon).

5- Made Yummy blueberry cookies.

1- It was little more than three miles from the Wall into the Old Kingdom, but that was enough.

2- They say the first of my kind was a woman named Alasdair, a human raised by hawks.

3- A boy went missing the night of the storm.

4- I remain committed to my goal of saving humanity from itself, but my latest efforts are meeting with mixed results.👇

2 - Busy week (as usual), yet still managed some reading time 📚💝.

I quite liked this one. I just felt that the author wasn‘t fully aware that very few children who read middle grade (the intended audience for this book) know details of Ann of Green Gables or The Little Princess. The end isn‘t felt rushed and sloppy, like something you‘d do when you‘ve been doing something forever and you just want to be done with it. I personally feel it would have been better on a cliffhanger, ⬇️

Zoe-h ⬆️ continued in the rest of the series. Nevertheless, I will continue it read the series. 4⭐️ 3y

Some people see a bookshop as an archive, or a shrine, or even a time machine. But I think a bookshop is like a map of the world. There are infinite paths you can take through it and none of them are right or wrong. Here in a bookshop we give readers landmarks to help them find their way, but every reader has to learn to set their own compass.

Apart from the four board books I purchased for my one year old Grandson this was the last book of four purchased this week for the older Grandchildren. They will take a book with them when they return to school next week after the lockdown. Reading an hour a day at school should mean the books last a bit longer than reading them at home where they can get through a book a week and save me a bit of money.

I read this or audio listened to this because it was the #mgbuddyread in Jan.
I absolutely loved it. It was so fun when Tilly visited Anne, but I also loved Anne of Green Gables.
Some middle schooler may not get all of the references to some books, but it may intrigue others to read some.
I am currently reading book 2, and may have to keep going.

#MGBuddyRead How would you describe how you‘ve set your compass as a reader?

Lmstraubie I am such a mood reader that it is hard to set a compass. I do try to broaden my reading tastes and to try new authors and genres by setting new reading goals each year. I have also been tracking my reading through a Google form to have a better understanding of my reading life. 4y
BarbaraJean This is such an interesting question! I think I‘ve done more to set my reading compass since joining Litsy, really—I‘ve become more intentional about diversifying my reading (both in genre and in diversity of perspective/representation). One of my goals the past few years has been to include at least one book of poetry and one nonfiction book in my monthly reading. 4y
Johanna414 Forcthe last few years, much of my reading has been directly related to work so that has been a big factor in how I "set my compass" - I devote much of my reading to keeping current on trends in YA and middle grade lit so I can recommend books to students and teachers 4y
See All 20 Comments
JaclynW My compass is messy. (ha! Speaking of messy readers.) Some of my reading is based on mood, some based on when my holds come in at the library, I've gotten lots of new ideas from Litsy, Goodreads and other bookish sites, I participate in several reading challenges, book clubs and buddy reads that also dictate what I read. I have loved the variety my compass has acquired. I have loved getting out of my comfort zone and being challenged. 4y
Daisey I think I‘m a bit with @JaclynW here. I used to have a fairly set reading compass based around historical fiction and fantasy with a lot of Christian influence. Now, my goals are often to expand my reading more, sending my compass spinning, including authors from different places and cultures, as well as perspectives that make me consider much more broadly than my rural Midwest background. 4y
JaclynW @Daisey Learning new things in my reading has always been a driving force for me, even as a youngster. (Hello Historical Fiction! - - >one of my favorites) It has become even more important for me as an adult though because I realize my location in life really limits the broader world. I am so appreciative for books for teaching me. 💞 4y
ravenlee I have reset my compass several times in my life; my reading has changed from my time as a literature student, through my bookselling stints, to being a homeschool mom. I‘ve also refined it through trying new things, some of which have turned me off and some of which have broadened my perspective. Kind of feels like Jack Sparrow‘s compass in the second Pirates movie! 😆 4y
Butterfinger Mine is just like @JaclynW my compass is always spinning. And I like it that way. I love learning and I don't learn from one set genre. 4y
mrp27 @JaclynW Ha ha!! I‘m right there with you. What compass? I‘m all over the place! Joking aside since being on Litsy some reading choices have been more deliberate and in direction of diversity and if course it changes through life cycles. 4y
megnews @BarbaraJean I would second that my compass has spun in new directions since finding Litsy. 4y
megnews @daisey @JaclynW I like your thoughts on this. I know what it is to be me and don‘t really need to read about it. I appreciate reading about others living or lived different lives than me, whether fiction or non. 4y
sblbooks I would say I'm an emotional, reflective, historian. That is based on my story graph stats. 4y
JaclynW @mrp27 🙌 It really does change with life cycles for sure. Such a fun reading journey! 4y
amber_ldsmom Definitely agree with @JaclynW . Mine is messy and spins like crazy, and I feel like Litsy makes it spin even more! 😂 So many great challenges! 4y
Chrissyreadit I guess I do not use a compass- I joined many buddy reads to see what I can read that‘s in my interest but not on my radar. And I would not change it- litsy has really helped me expand my book selections in the best possible way. 4y
shellleigh33 I have to agree with @Butterfinger 4y

#MGBuddyRead Which of these descriptions do you think most accurately describes a bookshop or library? Do you have another description you‘d use?

Lmstraubie I like the description that a bookshop is a map of the world because I feel like I have visited so many incredible places and worlds without leaving home. I also learn so much about the rest of the world through reading. 4y
BarbaraJean I love the time machine description—both because of the way books can transport you to so many times and places, but also because any collection of books I‘ve read takes me back in time to when I was reading them! Books can hold so many memories of my own life at the time I was reading them. 4y
JaclynW All of the above! I think a book shop is hallowed ground. I feel privileged to walk into one. So many worlds/places to explore! So many stories to tell/waiting to be read. Oh! Be still my heart! 💕💞💕💞💕💞 4y
See All 22 Comments
JaclynW @Lmstraubie yes! A big part of why I like to read - to learn about other people and places foreign to me. 4y
JaclynW @BarbaraJean That's true! We can be transported back to that time in our life when we read that particular book. It's the same with songs! 4y
megnews @Lmstraubie that‘s one of my favorite things about reading. 4y
megnews while a lot of these descriptions work for me, I think time machine is the closest for me because historical fiction is my favorite genre. 4y
megnews @BarbaraJean so true! Reading this book took me back to laying in my childhood bed reading the Anne books. 4y
Daisey I‘m not sure I can choose between the map and time machine. So much of my reading experience is about discovering different places (in our own world and fantasy) as well as different times. 4y
ravenlee I like these, but my favorite description of bookselling/bookstores is from Christopher Morley‘s The Haunted Bookshop: the proprietor compares recommending books to prescribing medicine, in that you have to know about the recipient and his/her needs and ailments to give the right remedy. 4y
Deblovestoread All of these...books are a record of what has gone before, a navigation through our current events and time, and a foretelling of what our world might be. 4y
mrp27 All of them and so many more! A bookstore one visit is like going to a travel agency to find the perfect escape on another visit it's a time machine taking you back, on another your meeting new friends..... So many things! 4y
Butterfinger Ooh I like the analogy to prescription @ravenlee and travel agency @mrp27 but my heart is set on the map. So many places and people. 4y
megnews @Daisey I feel the same. 4y
megnews @Kdgordon88 @mrp27 love those descriptions. 4y
megnews @ravenlee brilliant! There are times I choose a book I‘d normally love and it just isn‘t doing it for me. And then I read something else and it‘s exactly what I needed at the time. It‘s like the author is speaking right to me. Books are medicine for the soul. 4y
Deblovestoread @megnews @ravenlee. Medicine for the soul 💜💜💜 4y
sblbooks As others have pointed out; A map, time machine and at times just what the doctor ordered. 4y
amber_ldsmom @sblbooks 100% agree! 4y
Chrissyreadit I think about how bookstores and libraries have distinct personalities- Even in big cities The Main library is like a museum, but the Oxone park, Howard Beach and Jamaica libraries are completely different. That‘s true in WV as well- and size does not matter. They are all magical to me. 4y
megnews @Chrissyreadit yes, I love the differences you find at each library. 4y
shellleigh33 Love this quote. Books take me to any place I want to be and can completely change my mood. They place me in a whole new place and world 4y

#MGBuddyRead agree or disagree? Why?

Lmstraubie Agree because I can get completely lost in a book and everything else just melts away, because I can get attached to characters and be devastated to have to let them go. 4y
JaclynW Readers are unpredictable. Readers are fickle. Readers are fun and funny. Readers are complicated. How do you reach them all? Will they all get pulled into your story? Readers definitely can be messy to figure out! 4y
Johanna414 Hahaha my house is certainly more messy because I am a reader! 🤣🤣🤣 who has time to clean when there are books to read?! 4y
See All 13 Comments
megnews @Johanna414 I was thinking the same. In a very literal sense, my house is messy because I never want to set a book down. 4y
megnews @JaclynW love that answer! 4y
mrp27 We all read differently and take different things from a story. We even interpret differently so that can all lead to messiness. 4y
BarbaraJean @Johanna414 Hahaha! I was thinking the same thing! The flip side for me is that audiobooks can be an incentive to clean... especially now that I no longer have a daily commute, I've needed a mindless activity to give me audiobook time. Cleaning fits the bill! 4y
Johanna414 @BarbaraJean Yes! That‘s how I got through folding a mountain of laundry this morning! 4y
Butterfinger Love and agree with @JaclynW you can't label readers. 4y
sblbooks Agree with @Johanna414 . 4y
amber_ldsmom All good answers! 4y
Chrissyreadit I think about the diversity of interests and how patio steely we can defend or critique books- and how it can lay our souls bare by seeing what our interests and passions are. But I also agree that my house can be messy when I read over cleaning. 4y
shellleigh33 I have to agree with @Johanna414 my house suffers sometimes when I am entrapped in a good book 4y

#MGBuddyRead In her review, @Daisey mentioned she thinks The Bookwanderers might have missed out on some more recent books today‘s readers may be more interested in wandering into. It makes me sad to think today‘s readers may not know Anne. But she has a point? What more modern books would you have the characters wander into?

Lmstraubie Front Desk/Three Keys by Kelly Yang; Beatrice Zinker, Upsidedown Thinker by Shelly Johannes; Max and the Midnights by Lincoln Pierce; Ann Braden's newest Flight of the Puffin; (This is a dangerous question...I could keep going.) 4y
JaclynW As I was reading this book, I wondered if young kids today would recognize the books mentioned in Tilly's travels. And would this be a turn off to them because they couldn't relate? Or would it make their TBR grow? I own all of the mentioned - but even I haven't read them all yet and I'm pretty sure my kids haven't. Can you believe I haven't read the Anne of Green Gables books yet? I know enough about them though to not get lost in the references. 4y
See All 42 Comments
Lmstraubie @JaclynW As I thought on this I really believe kids areore familiar with these classics than we think. I believe a big reason for this is many of them being turned into graphic novels which makes for easier access. 4y
JaclynW The Magic Treehouse series was a big hit with 2 of my kids. Those characters wandered into their own interesting worlds. My kids love the books by Neil Gaiman, those would be entertaining (Coralie, The Graveyard Book). The Michael Vey books have been a hit here too. I think the Chris Colfer (fairy tales) books could be fun. There are so many! I LOVE this idea of bookwandering! 4y
JaclynW @Lmstraubie Possibly true. I should get them for my kids then so they will read these classics! 4y
JaclynW @Lmstraubie Sometimes the word "classic" turns my kids away. Sadly. It always peaks my interest. 4y
BarbaraJean I hadn‘t thought about the book references being classic literature rather than modern until I saw the author mention in the acknowledgements that she was sad Lyra Belacqua was still under copyright...😏 But there are so many modern stories that would be too perilous to wander into, I think! I‘d love to see a bookwander into Harry Potter, but it would have to be into the safer chapters. I‘d love to wander into Hogsmeade or Diagon Alley! 4y
Lmstraubie @BarbaraJean Head to Universal! Seriously, it is like walking into the book! 4y
Johanna414 I thought the same thing! I have a student I'm working with this year who I think would really enjoy this book but I'm not sure if she would get the literary references. Maybe Alice because of the Disney movie? 4y
BarbaraJean @JaclynW As a kid, I wouldn‘t have been bothered whether a story was old or new if it sounded interesting—I‘d go look for the book if it sounded good! That may not be the case for every kid, but I feel like Anne and Alice‘s stories are portrayed here in a way that might get kids interested. (Also, I think it would be terrifying to actually travel into Coraline!! The Graveyard Book I could handle. 😊) 4y
BarbaraJean @Lmstraubie YES! I‘ve been to Universal Hollywood once right after HP World opened, and it was glorious. But they can‘t replicate a snowy day or the authentic wizarding folk out for a day of shopping. 😊 4y
Lmstraubie @BarbaraJean Very true ⚡ 4y
megnews @Johanna414 I agree. I think most kids would at least recognize Alice because of the animated movie. 4y
Daisey I thought about this a lot as I read because I‘ve had little success encouraging younger readers to read Anne of Green Gables. I did wonder if part of the reasoning was copyright, but I also think a few mentions of more recent books could have still made their way in like the few Harry Potter references. 4y
ravenlee The Rick Riordan books would make for interesting wandering, as would the RR Presents books. Maybe not safe, but interesting. The Greenglass House books would be amazing. I do think classic books are more alive than it might seem, but the diversity of modern tales is very needed. (edited) 4y
JaclynW @ravenlee Yes, the diversity is needed! Classics have a place and I agree that they have more to them than meets the eye. 4y
JaclynW @BarbaraJean Yes, that's what I was thinking. If I were reading this as a young reader, the way this author talks about those books is enough to make me want to read those classics. Funny thing, I actually bought my youngest a lovely version of Alice in Wonderland for Christmas and we just talked about sitting down to read it today. So yay! @Lmstraubie @megnews @ravenlee @Daisey @Johanna414 4y
Deblovestoread It‘s funny that their wandering didn‘t feel dated to me. But at 61 I only started reading Anne a couple of years ago and don‘t have youngsters around reading more recent stories. Most of the fantasy I read now would be far to perilous for safe wandering. 4y
Deblovestoread @Lmstraubie I will never forget that first moment when the gate opened to the Wizarding world. It was instantly magical. 4y
mrp27 @JaclynW I think it's possible for the casual reader to be unfamiliar with the classics mentioned in the book but overall these books are classics and I feel like everyone comes across them at some point even if it's only through movies and tv. I've never read The Little Princess but it was a favorite childhood movie so I'm familiar. The book definitely makes me want to read it. 4y
Butterfinger What an awesome conversation. I can't think of any modern because my mind is stuck on Anne and Alice and Sara. I love Margaret Petersen Haddix - maybe her time traveling series. I am glad @ravenlee brought up the diversity of today's books. That is very important that you didn't get from 19th century. 4y
Lmstraubie @Kdgordon88 I always say that if I could have one book (series) erased from my memory it would be Harry Potter to experience that magic all over again. 4y
megnews @mrp27 I haven‘t read the Little Princess either but watched the movie many times. I kept picturing Shirley Temple and all the scenes in the movie. 4y
mrp27 @megnews Yes!!! That is my favorite version!! Loved Shirley Temple when I was kid. 4y
sblbooks I think Tilly would enjoy Mr. Lemoncello's Library. 4y
Lmstraubie @sblbooks Oh! Yes! I would like Mr. Lemoncello's Library lol 4y
Deblovestoread I will definitely be reading The Little Princess thanks to this book. Another reason books are magic! 4y
JaclynW @mrp27 @megnews Yes! The Shirley Temple version!! So good. I want to find it now and re-watch! 4y
JaclynW @sblbooks I've heard such great things about this book. I just bought the series for my youngest. I will have to read it too! 4y
JaclynW @megnews This conversation has been wonderful! I love reading a book about books. This book and this conversation has me adding several new books to my TBR! ❤️📚❤️📚 4y
megnews @JaclynW I agree. Amazing conversation. I‘ve never seen so much participation. I‘m glad the book was such a hit. It was definitely right up my alley. 4y
ravenlee @sblbooks @Lmstraubie yes, the Lemoncello books are fantastic. Might get kind of confusing to wander in books about books, though. 😆 4y
mrp27 @megnews Such awesome book talk, thanks for hosting! 4y
sblbooks @mrp27 @megnews yes, thank you! 4y
amber_ldsmom @Butterfinger I agree! The Haddix time traveling series would be great. Also Harry Potter, but maybe only if you‘re a Gryffindor. 😂 4y
Chrissyreadit @JaclynW I hope you read them and love them! I love the diversity of books today - but I am not as familiar with some of the newest ones. 4y
Chrissyreadit I was thinking of how my kids loved The Sisters Grimm books- I bet they would be fun to wander into. 4y
Butterfinger I haven't heard of Sisters Grimm. Thanks @Chrissyreadit 4y
Chrissyreadit @Butterfinger Michael Buckley is the author, we met him at the National Book Festival a few years ago and he was incredibly nice. 4y
shellleigh33 Well my daughter knew the classics, she always love the babysitter‘s club books, Magic treehouse, and of course Dork Diaries. I think those would be some kids today would visit 4y

#MGBuddyRead What book do you think would be unsafe for Tilly and Oskar to wander into? Why‘d you choose it?

Lmstraubie I guess it depends on the type of danger you mean. Physical danger - The Deathly Hallows. Danger of not wanting to leave and forgetting who you are - any book with characters or places they love. 4y
Johanna414 Oh man... I think bookwanderers should steer clear of anything by Neil Gaiman! 4y
ravenlee I think the list of safe books would be far shorter than unsafe ones. Mysteries, thrillers, most fantasy books - all contain too many perils for safe wandering. 4y
See All 10 Comments
mrp27 The Hunger Games, Handmaids Tale would definitely be dangerous. 4y
Butterfinger Riordan might be dangerous, but oh so fun. We have all been talking about fantasy. What about a historical fiction by Christopher Paul Curtis? There would be danger there as well. Such great books. 4y
sblbooks World War II historical fiction, like Number the Stars or Anne Frank's diary. 4y
sblbooks @Butterfinger I agree The Journey of Little Charlie would not be safe. Such a good book. 4y
megnews @Butterfinger @sblbooks I was thinking about historical fiction too, particularly anything WWII. 4y
Chrissyreadit You all named some scary books. I‘m thinking horror too, Salem‘s Lot, The Stand, The Road, 4y
shellleigh33 I would think the Outlander series or Game of Thrones might be dangerous ones. Some type of Horror books also 4y

#MGBuddyRead What‘s a book you read outside your comfort zone in the past year? Would you recommend it? Why or why not? If you haven‘t read outside your comfort zone, what‘s on your tbr outside your comfort zone?

TheBookHippie I loathe Romance books 🤣😩🤷🏽‍♀️ however I read with friends and then watched and enjoyed 4y
Lmstraubie I can't say that I've read anything outside my comfort zone this year because this past year's reading has been all about comfort! However, in the past I read You & The Girl With All the Gifts which were both completely out of my comfort zone, but I really enjoyed them both (although enjoyed may not be the right word 🤔 lol) 4y
JaclynW Non-fiction can sometimes be out of my comfort zone. (Fantasy/Sci-fi too.) I'm coming to get comfy with both in my old age. ? YEARS ago in my book club, a member chose Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage. I was dying that we had to read a "boy book." I made myself read it, dragging my feet, and I ended up throgoughly enjoying it and finding it so fascinating. It was a good lesson/reminder of not judging a book and just giving it a try. 4y
See All 38 Comments
JaclynW @Lmstraubie 😂 Those are both great books! 4y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie I just finished that book too! Romance isn't my usual either. I still need to watch the show. 4y
Lmstraubie @JaclynW I laugh at myself because the advice I would give others is to read outside your comfort zone every once in a while. I even offer a reading challenge encouraging my kids to do this. I need to take my own advice a little more often lol 4y
JaclynW @Lmstraubie 😂 I know what you mean. I used to be more of a reader stuck in comfort zones. But it was exactly those reading challenge lists and my book club that have pushed me to read other things. I usually enjoy it too. So with that track record, I'm less opposed to reading something I wouldn't naturally pick up on my own. I still have my natural tendencies that kick in though. 😉 4y
megnews @TheBookHippie I loathe romance too! 😂 I can stomach it in a Christmas novel or if there‘s something else that catches my eye, like the setting. But pure romance, no. 4y
megnews @JaclynW a “boy book” 😂 that‘s so funny. I think I kind of feel the same. I definitely don‘t care for sci fi. Very picky on non fiction. 4y
megnews For me, I feel Litsy has stretched my comfort zone some. I never would have imagined myself a graphic novel reader until I was introduced to some great ones here. I honestly didn‘t know there were graphic novels outside super heroes. Now they‘re a go to for me. (edited) 4y
Lmstraubie @JaclynW We all do 😬 4y
ravenlee In the past year I think the books on antiracism have been the biggest stretch for me. I tend not to read current affairs, so they just weren‘t on my radar. Similarly, Woodward‘s Rage was a really uncomfortable read. I actually read quite a few politics/current affairs books in the last year and need to continue doing so. 4y
Johanna414 I think taking part in the #lmpbc book club in the last couple years has been great for pushing my comfort zone a little! That being said, I tend to be willing to try anything once when it comes to books 4y
JaclynW @megnews Graphic Novels are new to me too! There are some really amazing ones. I also thought that they were only super heroes. The more you know🌠! 4y
JaclynW @ravenlee I'm picking up more of those kinds of books too in recent years. It seems like a must to try and understand our world and how we can fix things. ❤️ 4y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW my friends in NYC and I did it together it was so fun! Virtual of course. 4y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW Anne Frank and The Handmaids Tale in graphic novel you may enjoy quite a bit. 4y
TheBookHippie @ravenlee that‘s generally all I read and I stretch to read the opposite! 🤍 4y
Deblovestoread Litsy has definitely changed my reading. I don‘t read Zombies but loved Dread Nation and Deathless Divide. I didn‘t read much non-fiction pre Litsy but have read some amazing memoirs and books about race. Horror is totally out of my comfort zone and will remain there 😂 4y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie Ooooh! I probably would love those 2 in graphic novel form! I will add them to my list! 4y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie Virtual of course! Sounds fun! Are you going to continue reading the Bridgerton series? 4y
TheBookHippie @JaclynW if the group does 🤣😝 I‘d never read it on my own 😬 I‘m not sure how we are all reading it is the way it is meant to be read. None of us like the genre it‘s more comic stress relief. 4y
mrp27 There is really not a lot that makes me uncomfortable, I'll read anything as long as it's compelling. Sci Fi, horror and non fiction are my least read genres. I would do more but they have to be really really good to get me to pick it up. One non fiction title I read and learned from this year is 4y
BarbaraJean @ravenlee @JaclynW Similar for me - I've read quite a few antiracism books (White Fragility, How to Be an Antiracist, and recently The New Jim Crow), which I wouldn't have picked up if it hadn't been for the protests last year (or the BLM book group that a church friend started in July). Litsy and book clubs have really pushed my reading towards books I wouldn't naturally gravitate towards. 4y
sblbooks I don't deviate from my norm very often. I read a apocalyptic novel in January last year. 4y
Butterfinger @Kdgordon88 I am totally with you. Horror will always be outside my comfort zone. I read Something Wicked This Way Comes this past Halloween. My husband said several times, "That movie was so scary." I got through it. I even enjoyed it, but I don't want to reread it. 4y
megnews @Butterfinger @Kdgordon88 no horror for me either! 4y
Deblovestoread @Butterfinger My daughter is my barometer. She loves horror so I use her to measure whether or not a book would be outside my zone. 4y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie Comic stress relief is sorely needed these days! Have fun! 4y
JaclynW @mrp27 That book looks interesting! 4y
JaclynW @megnews @Butterfinger @Kdgordon88 i used to avoid horror also but I've come to enjoy some quite a bit. My kids love the genre so they inspire my reading. 4y
mrp27 @JaclynW It's well worth a read and helpful in understanding how and why the BLM movement started. 4y
JaclynW @mrp27 🙌 Awesome. 4y
amber_ldsmom @Butterfinger I LOVED Something Wicked This Way Comes! The creepier the better is right up my alley, lol. 4y
amber_ldsmom I‘m most uncomfortable with political books. I couldn‘t stomach any of those this year. Nonfiction isn‘t really in my comfort zone either, but I read Why We Sleep and Just Mercy . Loved Just Mercy. 4y
Chrissyreadit I did not read anything out of my comfort zone- but that being said out of my comfort would be a book like 4y
Chrissyreadit Other than books like that, and The Metamorphosis or the book about a boy on an island with a bee or wasp and bad things happen - I will read most. So I guess literary and speculative horror are out of my comfort zone 🤣 4y
shellleigh33 I don‘t usually read much nonfiction or sci-fi but have over past few years since I participate in #LMPBC. Have came across several good reads that way and learned to step out of my comfort zones 4y

#MGBuddyRead This quote resonated with me because I feel I‘ve traveled so many places in book I couldn‘t otherwise. What author or book would you recommend for their/its ability to build a world you truly feel drawn into?

Lmstraubie I know this is obvious and probably overused, but J. K. Rowling. I am always amazed at the incredible world she created - food, money, spells, clothing, travel, the list goes on. 4y
JaclynW @Lmstraubie Great pick! The Harry Potter world ticks about every box: adventure, magic, friendships, danger, creatures, school, travel, love, and on and on! 4y
JaclynW As a child, I remember loving the settings created in the Little House books, Nancy Drew and The Secret Garden. As an adult, I have read books by other authors that I'd love to visit their worlds, like: Neil Gaiman, J. K. Rowling, Naomi Novik.... I know there's more but my brain is hitting a block. 4y
See All 40 Comments
BarbaraJean I was amazed at the richness of the world building in Robin Hobb‘s Liveship Traders books. Such vivid settings—although Hobb is not very kind to her characters! I‘d also recommend Becky Chambers‘ Wayfarers books for sci-fi world building. 4y
Lmstraubie @JaclynW Neil Gaiman is also AMAZING at world building. This one is among my favorites of his. 4y
megnews @Lmstraubie I‘ve never read anything by Neil Gaiman but I think I need to. 4y
megnews @Jaclynw as a kid I was very drawn into the Little House books as well. Only catch, I always felt no way I could live pre-indoor plumbing and modern conveniences of life. 😂 (edited) 4y
Lmstraubie @megnews If you are an audiobook person listen to his books. He narrates many of them. I think I would listen to him narrate the phone book lol 4y
Daisey I‘m going to have to go with J.R.R. Tolkien for this one. His world building is amazing, and I can continuously read his work (as some of you probably know after years of posts 😂) 4y
megnews @Lmstraubie 😂 where would you recommend I start with Gaiman? 4y
megnews @Lmstraubie @JaclynW I knew Harry Potter would be mentioned. I‘ve never read them! 4y
ravenlee Ilona Andrews‘ Kate Daniels and Hidden Legacy worlds are incredible to me, taking existing cities and warping them to fit the magic universes (Atlanta and Houston, respectively). It all feels so real. 4y
JaclynW @Lmstraubie Neverwhere is one of my favorites of his too! Can you imagine wandering into that world?! 4y
JaclynW @megnews Yes! You need to try Neil Gaiman! 4y
JaclynW @megnews I had the same catch with the Little House books! 😂 4y
JaclynW @megnews @Lmstraubie Oh yes! Get the narrated books by Gaiman if you can! So delightful! I could listen to him read anything too! Have you heard him read Green Eggs and Ham? It's wonderful! And perfect for Dr. Seuss day coming up. 4y
JaclynW For young readers with Neil Gaiman I would recommend (also comes in graphic novel form) 4y
JaclynW For young readers with Neil Gaiman I would recommend (also comes in graphic novel form) 4y
Lmstraubie @megnews I loved Neverwhere. I still can't decide how I feel about Ocean at the End if the Lane, but it's still with me to this day so I guess that says something. I also liked The Graveyard Book. Coraline was fantastically creepy in audio. I also LOVED his collaboration with Terry Pratchett on this one 4y
Lmstraubie @JaclynW OMGosh!!! I did not know!! I will have to check it out. 4y
JaclynW @Lmstraubie Good Omens was another favorite of mine. I've read almost all of his book and I love them all. 4y
JaclynW @Lmstraubie @megnews Gaiman does picture books too! 4y
Lmstraubie @JaclynW @megnews He also has this series 4y
Lmstraubie @JaclynW Did you watch the Netflix adaptation? I was hesitant because I loved the book so much, but ended up enjoying it. 4y
Johanna414 @ravenlee Yes!! Ilona Andrews is fantastic! (edited) 4y
Johanna414 I‘ve been reading Katherine Arden‘s Winternight trilogy and feel like I‘m transporting right into the setting. I find myself piling on the blankets and drinking hot tea while I read... 4y
JaclynW @Lmstraubie I did love the Good Omens adaptation! It was well done I thought. 4y
Deblovestoread That quote sums up why I read. I have been a million places and lived a million lives. I love Hogwarts for magical and Victorian England for historical. The Shire for peace and Jodi Taylor‘s vision of time travel for adventure. Actually, Max from her series would be an awesome friend! 4y
mrp27 I know she's a bit controversial at the moment but JK Rowling really drew me into the wizarding world, Lauar Ingalls Wilder, CS Lewis with Narnia. 4y
megnews @mrp27 yes, Narnia! 4y
sblbooks A couple of classic authors that come to mind are Mark Twain and Pearl S Buck. 4y
BarbaraJean @Kdgordon88 Jodi Taylor's St. Mary's series is SO much fun. That's a great pick for adventurous reading! And I agree, I would love to be friends with Max! 4y
Butterfinger I will have to go again with Riordan. 4y
amber_ldsmom Rosamunde Pilcher. I feel like I‘ve feel to Scotland when I‘ve never even left the country. That is my dream destination. ❤️ 4y
megnews @amber_ldsmom I‘ve never read anything by her. I‘ve always wanted to visit Scotland too. 4y
Chrissyreadit Oh! Belgariad, The Thief series (Megan Whalen Turner) Sara Donati books- I love Into The Wilderness- and also I still feel lost hoping for a third book to The Last Hours, and Holly Blacks books...... 4y
megnews @Chrissyreadit I love Donati. Into the Wilderness is on my tbr. 4y
Chrissyreadit @megnews it‘s an absolute favorite series for me. Hope you enjoy it! 4y

#MGBuddyRead, The Bookwanderers is about the love of stories. So let‘s talk books. We already discussed what book we‘d want to wander into in @sblbooks post. If you could choose any character for a best friend, who would it be and why?

TheBookHippie As a child Sally J Freedman from Judy Blume as an adult Jane Eyre 4y
Lmstraubie This is tricky 😖 Right now at this moment - Adult book Irene from the Invisible Library Series. MG book - Matilda 4y
BarbaraJean This is heavily influenced by the fact that I‘m re-reading Anne of the Island right now, as well as her appearances in The Bookwanderers, but I‘m gonna say Anne Shirley. Her optimism and idealism, the way she sees and appreciates beauty, and her loyalty and sense of humor are all qualities I need and would enjoy in a friend! (edited) 4y
See All 30 Comments
JaclynW This is such a hard question with many possibile answers. I like to have intelligent women around me that aren't afraid to go after what they want, a sense of humor is important because laughter is such great medicine. I like them to have other interests than me too so it exposes me to other things - we also must have similar interests for obvious reasons. Being bookish helps. To name a few off the top of my head that would fit this:⬇️⬇️⬇️ 4y
JaclynW Nina Hill, Lara Jean, Nancy Drew and Hermione. I know there are more names that I can't think of currently. Fun question! Thanks! @megnews 4y
megnews @JaclynW I just realized I missed tagging you in the questions! Sorry! 4y
megnews @Lmstraubie Matilda-great choice! 4y
megnews @BarbaraJean I have to say as a young girl i probably would have chosen Anne as well. I can‘t even count how many times I reread all the books. 4y
Lmstraubie @megnews @BarbaraJean I'm almost embarrassed to say I didn't read Anne of Green Gables until I was an adult, but absolutely loved it. 4y
Daisey Since I‘ve first read them, I‘ve connected to Anne Shirley ( @BarbaraJean I think recent readalong posts are also reminding me again of just how much I loved those books) and Jo March in Little Women. For a recent middle grade read, I think Coyote Sunrise would be a fascinating character to meet and a wonderful friend. Again a caring character with a love of books. (edited) 4y
ravenlee @Lmstraubie I didn‘t either, not until I was reading them to my daughter. Doubly embarrassing for being named Anne! 4y
megnews @Daisey I‘ve had Coyote Sunrise on my list for about a year. I really need to get to it. 4y
ravenlee I‘m not sure who I would pick for a friend, as the book series I love tend to feature protagonists it could be dangerous to befriend (Mercy Thompson, Kate Daniels)! Anne Shirley, Hermione/Ginny/Luna, Celie from Tuesdays at the Castle; or Turtle Wexler from The Westing Game would all be good. 4y
Lmstraubie @ravenlee lol nah! It's all good 😊 4y
Johanna414 @Daisey @megnews Coyote Sunrise is SO GOOD! I need to think about this question a little further though... 4y
Johanna414 Ok got it - I would love to be part of the crew in The House in the Cerulean Sea. I want to befriend them all! 4y
Deblovestoread Good question...Nancy Drew when I was young. Older me Professor McGonagall. 4y
JaclynW @megnews No worries! 4y
JaclynW @Daisey Jo March! 4y
JaclynW @Johanna414 I loved that whole crew too! The House in the Cerulean Sea was so good! 4y
mrp27 Ohhh so many to choose from! Jo March, Hermione, Ramona, Matilda, and of course Tilly herself. 4y
megnews @mrp27 benefits of being best friends with Tilly—book wandering! 4y
sblbooks I agree, Anne Shirley and Tilly. 4y
mrp27 @megnews Definitely! 4y
Butterfinger Anne and Jo. I think if I were to meet Jo March, we would already be friends. I know her so well, surely she would know me. 4y
amber_ldsmom Oh, man! Definitely gonna have to go with Anne Shirley! 4y
Chrissyreadit I agree with Jo March- but also- I think Trixie Beldon and Elonwy in Prydain and CeNedra and Silk from Belgariad 4y
megnews @Chrissyreadit ❤️ Trixie! 4y
shellleigh33 I loved Ramona Quimby when I was younger. I think I would have wanted her to be my beat friend. She seemed so much fun 4y

I am so glad @megnews picked this for the January #mgbuddyread and introduced me to this series. Tilly discovers she has the amazing ability to visit the books she loves. She enters the world's of Alice and Anne, but her most life changing visit happens in her missing mother's favorite book, A Little Princess. I can't wait to join Tilly & Oskar on further adventures. Looking forward to tomorrow's discussion!

What a fascinating book. I'd love to be able to see and talk to my best friends from books. I'd choose Anne, just as Tilly did, and Jo. The Little Princess has a very special place in my heart - I remember my mom taking me to the bookstore for my 8th or 9th birthday and I chose Sara and my first journal. We rarely had money for books. Alice and her special sidekicks make several appearances so I am including #FairytaleReadingChallenge @Charityann

Butterfinger I need to reread The Little Princess. The Bookwanderers didn't include my favorite character, the Indian servant, and I have forgotten his name so that tells me something. I think the monkey's name was Rajah and he didn't make an appearance either so I have a deep longing for it. #MGBuddyRead @megnews @sblbooks I am ready to discuss. I never imagined Mr. Crewe romantically, but I confess I did the servant. 😊 4y
amber_ldsmom @Butterfinger I was thinking the same thing. I never read A Little Princes, so now it‘s on the list. 😁 4y
Butterfinger @amber_ldsmom let's read it together. 4y

I have been seeing great quotes and reviews of this book, so I checked my libraries again and was able to find it on audio. It was a fun read, very much a cozy story about the love of books. However, my one question is whether it would truly catch the attention of #MiddleGrade readers as it focuses mostly on classic stories with only passing mentions of more current well loved books.

#MGBuddyRead #audiobook

Lmstraubie That's a good point - I wonder if just the idea of getting to meet your favorite characters would be the hook. 4y

sblbooks @Butterfinger The Little Princess and Anne Of Green Gables are my favorites also. I never have liked The Wizard of Oz. 4y
Butterfinger I loved the series when I was young. 4y
mrp27 I‘ve always wanted to visit Wonkas chocolate factory. 4y
sblbooks @mrp27 a chocolate Lover's Dream, that would be awesome. 4y
shellleigh33 @mrp27 Willy Wonka does sound fun 🍫🍭🍬. I think I would second that one. My favorite books growing up were Little House on the Prairie books and Little Women so that is probably what I would have wondered into. 4y
sblbooks @shellleigh33 I loved the Little House series, but I don't think I would have survived the frontier. 4y
shellleigh33 @sblbooks me neither. I think I just would have love to been able to play with Laura and Mary when I was younger. Their adventures always sounded so much fun 4y
rubyslippersreads @Butterfinger @sblbooks Any of those three would be wonderful! (edited) 4y
rubyslippersreads @shellleigh33 @sblbooks I‘d love to play with Laura and Mary too, but I think playing with Betsy and Tacy would be safer. 😊 4y
Lmstraubie Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone I love the beginning when Harry's just learning about who he is and how magic fits into his life. 4y
shellleigh33 @rubyslippersreads yes I agree Betsy and Tacy sound safer and just as fun 😊 4y
megnews @mrp27 how could I forget Willy Wonka?! Now there is definitely want to wander into. I can almost smell the chocolate River. 4y
megnews @shellleigh33 @sblbooks I adored Little House. If it‘s a short wander, yes. If it‘s long enough to need a bathroom break without indoor plumbing, no. 😂 4y
megnews @sblbooks I‘m pretty particular about fantasy choices (like Lion the Withc and the Wardrobe) but I agree this one‘s a hit! 4y
amber_ldsmom I‘d love to spend time at Hogwarts! 😁 4y
sblbooks @rubyslippersreads I stacked Betsy-Tracy I've never read those either. 4y
Butterfinger I loved Betsy-Tacy series. I had a huge crush on Joe. 4y
TheBookHippie @rubyslippersreads oh those books were so fun 4y
TheBookHippie Judy Blume many of her books or the Beverly Clearly teen books Fifteen was a favorite of mine. 4y

JaclynW @mrp27 Willy Wonka would be fun! 4y
JaclynW @TheBookHippie I remember Fifteen! 4y
JaclynW @megnews The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe would be fun! That was actually my first fantasy book. Another book that I thought was a "boy book" but thoroughly enjoyed. I would love to finish that series someday. Have you read them all? 4y
mrp27 @JaclynW All the chocolate!! 4y
megnews @JaclynW Yes. My favorite is The Magician‘s Nephew, followed by the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. 4y
JaclynW @megnews 🙌 I need to get to these. 4y
megnews @Butterfinger @JaclynW Oz yes but could also be dangerous. 4y
Chrissyreadit I‘m leaning toward being with Betsy Tacy and the group in High School. I also would love The Secret Garden and Sherwood Forest ❤️❤️❤️ 4y
