mcctrish I don‘t even know what to think at this point - Maggie won‘t marry Stephen because of Lucy, she can‘t be with Philip because of Tom and his lines in the sand so she will be alone ? There are probably more fish in the sea but we are running out of chapters 11h
Bookwormjillk Maggie doesn‘t seem to have any good options and now everyone will blame her for Stephen‘s assery. 11h
See All 11 Comments
dabbe Yep, Maggie gets to go back and face the music while Stephen literally can ride off into the sunset. Damn what these women had to go through in the 1800s! 7h
Leftcoastzen Oh man ! Poor Maggie! Few choices to begin with and now this ! 6h
Leftcoastzen Too all ! Enjoying the read along and all the great comments! 6h
ElizaMarie @dabbe Yes! The 1800s were so brutal for a young woman. She is screwed, Stephen is an ass, he doesn't care about her reputation, and practually blackmails her into marriage for the “sake“ of her reputation - ugh! I hate boys! I feel bad for Maggie. Worried this book will end and she won't find happiness. 5h
dabbe @ElizaMarie 🩵🎯🩵 5h
KAO @ElizaMarie @dabbe Agreeing with you on all points!! (edited) 4h
dabbe @KAO 🎯🩵🎯 4h
Clare-Dragonfly I would like to give Stephen a smack! I don‘t know what options Maggie has now. Someone saw her and Stephen together who knows them 😨 (I‘m guessing and hoping Ben!) She can‘t even get a decent teaching situation if they hear she‘s been alone with a man. 48m

KAO This can‘t go well!! 1d
Clare-Dragonfly He kidnapped her!!! THIS IS NOT OKAY. 1d
Clare-Dragonfly I think it would ruin Maggie‘s reputation if they don‘t get married. So he‘s pretty much forced her hand at this point. 1d
Leftcoastzen Uh oh ! Not fair! 1d
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly I agree - I don't like this Stephen guy. He feels so entitled to do whatever, consenquences be damned. He claims to care for her, but then he puts her in a lot of situations a young lady shouldn't be in. AND doesn't listen when she tells him to stop/leave her alone. 5h

mcctrish Well we know what side of the family Tom is from 2d
Clare-Dragonfly I guess I‘m relieved he accepted the Mill (though I think he doesn‘t actually own it yet). But of course he‘s even more mad at Philip now. And those aunts! Yeah, aunt Glegg‘s tablecloths with elk on them are so much inferior to the ones with diamonds, I‘m sure. 😂 2d

BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly yeah i think the uncle owns it but tom will run it 2d
Bookwormjillk Blah blah blah tablecloths 2d

mcctrish What to do, what to do? I love how Stephen is mad at Maggie #whatamaroon 3d
Ruthiella I feel like Stephen crossed a line there by showing up and it makes me mad. He‘s putting Maggie in a bad situation-one he can walk away from as a man, but she as a woman cannot live down. She will be unfairly judged either way. 3d
See All 12 Comments
mcctrish @Ruthiella and it‘s not the first time either 🤬 Phillip has noticed and he isn‘t blameless either #tomisgoingtolosehisshit #andstillblamemaggie 3d
TheAromaofBooks Side note, still trying to figure out why the heck Tom is the most important person in Maggie's life. Let's make all our decisions based on what the judgmental jerk who treats you like trash will think 🙄 3d
ElizaMarie @TheAromaofBooks yes!!! I mean how close do you have to stay with your mean brother? She needs to choose her own family. 3d
Ruthiella @TheAromaofBooks I agree and it is frustrating. I think Eliot is telling us that Maggie‘s bond with her brother is stronger than any other ( other than to her father, now deceased). 3d
Bookwormjillk @TheAromaofBooks YES!! Granted the rest of that family would side with him if he tells them to, but Maggie has proven that she can survive on her own. Gritty is the only one who makes sense in this book. 3d
mcctrish @TheAromaofBooks women just being programmed by the patriarchy to do what the men in the family say ( Maggie needs Tom more than he needs her ) 3d
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk she totally has proven she can survive on her own 3d
dabbe The Stephen-Maggie thing has RUTH vibes all over it. Don't give in, Maggie! If only it were the 2020s! 😱 3d
Clare-Dragonfly Ugh! I am SO mad at Stephen now! How dare he show up and tell her she has to talk to him because his poor little manly fee-fees are hurt. How dare he blame her for him riding thirty miles a day about it. Get over yourself, dude. 😡😡😡😡🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻 3d

mcctrish Can Tom be mad once he hears all the details ? Phil loves Maggie so much he makes his dad get the mill back into Tom‘s hands - seems like enough to me but Tom likes to punish so maybe not #cutoffhisnosetospitehisface (edited) 4d
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish Oh, I bet Tom can find a way to be mad. 🙄 4d

mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly 😂😂 4d
TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly I'm fully expecting Tom to be too proud to accept the mill once he finds out Phillip was involved 🙄 4d
Clare-Dragonfly Yeah, that‘s my thought as well. 😖 4d
mcctrish @TheAromaofBooks you aren‘t wrong 4d
Bookwormjillk Tom will stop being mad once he finds a way to take credit for the whole thing 4d
dabbe @BarkingMadRead @mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly @TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk
I have to kind of bag on Maggie here. Her indecision is what's affecting everyone. She's not being truthful with anyone regarding her real feelings for Phil (which is NOT romantic love) and Stephen (which is sexual desire and maybe love). ⬇️
4d
dabbe And re: the hand-arm kissing, what enrages her most is that “Stephen thought more lightly of her than he did of Lucy.“ Thus, she has been unconsciously thinking of her cousin as a rival, and she is angry that the disputed lover seems to treat her with less respect than he does her blonde cousin. #mytwocents 4d
Bookwormjillk @dabbe you are so right 4d
mcctrish @Bookwormjillk true dat and @dabbe Maggie needs to go to her situation and take a breather 4d
dabbe @mcctrish 🎯🩵🎯 4d
ElizaMarie @Dabbe I agree with these statements. I feel like Maggie not being honest about her feelings allows others to act in ways that can appear problematic. Maggie needs to grow a backbone. 4d
dabbe @ElizaMarie She's the 19th-century damsel in distress. 🤣 4d
Leftcoastzen I‘m with @dabbe on Maggie. I also think Tom will react badly to the mill situation, he always does. 3d

Clare-Dragonfly This bit reminded me of the chapter of Little Women where they have a similar bazaar and all the snobby ladies are jealous of Amy so they send her to a crappy flower stall and sell her artwork themselves. So Laurie gets her better flowers and brings all his friends to buy up all her art 😂 Anyway, Maggie is doing the exact right thing by going off to another situation, but I fear more drama will ensue anyway. 5d

dabbe At first, the original love triangle reminded me of the one in THE AGE OF INNOCENCE. Now with Philip, I'm like 😳. I think we're headed for a fall. 1w
ElizaMarie I am not into this Stephen dude- he is gonna cause so much trouble 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t totally blame Stephen for not acting well—his attraction to Maggie is pretty new and he doesn‘t know what to do with it. But I sure hope he shapes up soon and realizes he has to make a choice! (Or preferably leave them both alone because picking one is definitely going to cause drama.) 1w

mcctrish Poor Tom is surrounded by fuck ups 🤣🤣🤣 1w
dabbe I may be giving an unpopular opinion here, but I think Tom nailed some of Maggie's worst traits--even though he was a dick about it as usual. Maggie's overwrought passions are going to get her into trouble--IMHO. 1w
BarkingMadRead @dabbe he‘s 💯 correct. With zero tact 🤣 1w
KAO All in all, it still seems a shame that Tom and Maggie don‘t have a more mutually supportive relationship. It would be a bit of comfort for them in these trying times! #admittedlypollyanna-ish (edited) 1w
Bookwormjillk Usually I like one of the kids over the other but they both were annoying in this chapter. 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t really see how Maggie got “Tom is in love with Lucy” from what Bob said but I‘ll go with it! Will the couples reconfigure leaving poor Philip alone? Also, did you notice that Bob‘s wife is short?! As a short person I was very amused 😂 1w
Leftcoastzen Yes , I wish Tom & Maggie were closer , he‘s always pretty harsh but agree with @dabbe he points out traits in Maggie that could lead to issues! 1w

Ruthiella @mcctrish I thought too Tom would sneak the money in to the tin. And for sure, even if the debts are paid, both he and Mr. T. have to work ie, stay at the Mill or find somewhere else. So this is all very performative. 2w

mcctrish It happened faster than I thought #maggiespeaksthetruth I wonder if Tom will actually hear and understand Maggie‘s words later on? How he is inherently mean? I pity any girl he sets his eye on ( I don‘t think Tom is wrong though that #techytully being upset with Phil and Mags would be nothing compared to #snakywakey ‘s response or how compromised Mags would be if it was known she was meeting up with a boy) 2w
TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish - That's the thing, Tom wasn't 100% wrong; I think he was actually right about a lot of what he said, but wowsers he sure is one self-satisfied, obnoxious kid. Clare-Dragonfly They are all so mean! I wish it had occurred to Tom to mention that he‘s good at drawing, especially things like buildings. I bet that could get him a good start. 4w
Leftcoastzen Much better to have less family than a family like this ! Poor Tom trying to do what he can while listening to Uncle belittling his education. 4w
TheAromaofBooks @Bookwormjillk - I felt the same way! I get that you don't want to hand a pile of money to people who have proven that they aren't going to use it wisely, but Tom is genuinely trying to make good and start providing for his mom and sister, and I thought it was dreadful the way his uncle just blew him off. 4w
ElizaMarie This chapter felt very current to me. It's like kiddos get an education and then can't get a job with their education. I know it's not the same, but it got me thinking about how some college courses/majors do not translate to the working world. I feel so bad for Tom - also this #TheirFamilySucks ! 4w

@Read4Life Thanks for the tag -

1. I keep $20 in my car at all times. Mostly for gas, but lately, it's for ice cream money (there is a seasonal shop opened now that only takes cash).

2. I would say the family is kinda wealthy, and are not about sharing the wealth, but holding it over others. The MC family is poor poor dirt poor and now they are facing their downfall.

#WhereAreYouMonday

Apparently based on Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, I am still with Maggie Tulliver and co. in the mid 19th century reading for #HashtagBrigade . The “real river” is the Trent and it is quite imposing looking. “Floss” sounds so sweet and gentle. But the Trent is known for its dramatic flooding that can even change the course of the river.

KAO While reading this chapter, I felt a bizarre reminder of the rich patriarch of the family visiting the White Lotus resort in the latest season of this show—about how he received news that his fortune had been lost and he didn‘t want to tell his privileged family and about how tortured he was by the sheer anticipation of financial ruin… Yes, I confess having watched the whole series! 1mo
BarkingMadRead @kao I just started season 1, I can‘t wait to watch all the seasons! 1mo
KAO @BarkingMadRead The show is SO bizarre, but I couldn‘t resist some unique storytelling! 1mo
mcctrish Truthfully I can‘t even remember what the suit was for but the fact #tetchytully owed money to so many people I‘m not sure how his plan was ever going to be more than a dream. I haven‘t watched this season of WL yet, it‘s such a bonkers show ❤️❤️❤️ 1mo

Clare-Dragonfly I hope they become friends and Philip helps Tom with his Latin and drawing! I like Philip, but that‘s probably because I was a shy, bookish kid like him… and because him having a hunch due to a childhood accident makes me think of Mr Benson, the minister from (edited) 1mo
