The Last Kids on Earth: June's Wild Flight
The Last Kids on Earth: June's Wild Flight | Max Brallier
55 posts | 45 read | 14 to read
The New York Times bestselling Last Kids on Earth series presents June Del Toro in her very own adventure! Told from June's point of view--and set between the shattering events of The Midnight Blade and the upcoming 6th book in the series--June's Wild Flight brings new characters, high-stakes action, and stunning revelations in an adventure that could only be June's. An essential Last Kids story that readers won't want to miss! The Midnight Blade ended with a shocking twist: a long-missing villain has returned and now has an army of the dead at his command! Jack, June, Quint, and Dirk have battled the worst kind of monsters, zombies, and cosmic servants, but an endless horde of animated skeletons is next-level. While the kids plan their next move, an unexpected threat emerges and June gets separated from her friends, dragged miles away from Wakefield to a town overgrown with monstrous vines and never-before-seen creatures. Drawing on her post-apocalyptic survival and action skills--and with the help of some odd new companions--June attempts to make her way back home. But not before she uncovers critical information about the mysterious "Tower." Information that the future of our world may hinge upon . . .

I love asking my students what I should read next. Here are most of the recommendations from my sixth graders for winter break. I‘ve managed to find all of these in Libby ready to read now or within a few days. Many aren‘t my typical genre, so I‘m interested to see how this goes! I‘m also hoping to make up a little teacher book blog to show them what a book review looks like.

The Last Kids on Earth is about a boy and his friends surviving a monster-zombie apocalypse. The main character is thirteen year old, Jack Sullivan, who is the hero of the story. Then there is Quint Baker, the hero's best friend, and June Del Toro, the hero's love interest. I like this book because I am a fan of graphic novels, and also adventures and I like to read about things that are related to survival and post- apocalyptic events.

This book was recommended to me by most of the boys in my 4th grade class. I am so glad I listened to them! As a huge fan of zombies, this book was the perfect fit. I was hooked from the first page and couldn‘t put it down. It is the story of Jack, a boy whose normal life is turned into an adventure by the zombie apocalypse hitting his town. His list of missions is amazing and hilarious! I highly recommend this book! 🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️🧟‍♂️🧟‍♀️

NY Times Bestseller "The Last Kids on Earth" (SF) is written by Max Brallier and illustrated by Douglas Holgate. This illustrated chapter book tells the story of Jack Sullivan who bands together with other local kids to fight the hordes of zombies that have invaded his hometown. This is a great read for IR, especially for students who like SF as opposed to RF. #lae3414sp19

dayuso1 This book can utilize UDL strategy Develop Self Assessment/Reflection (9.3) so that students can reflect on what they would do if they were in that situation. ESOL students need to be asked numerous questions to exercise higher-level thinking (ESOL 36) to understand the plot of the book. 6y

I absolutely adored this book. While I don't usually read illustrated books (or enjoyed them) I didn't want to put this one down! I loved how our main character saw life as a video game and the video game references sounded logical, true, and something I would think up. This made it relatable and amazing. Love it!

The authors writing
The author uses a style that makes you get lost in the world. His use of illustration showing what the character's look like make it so your mind doesn't run wild thinking what they look like. And the fact that the character's don't know everything about the world add's to the story as a whole.

If, like me, you have a kid who reads well but is Very Picky and only likes books that appeal to his wacky sense of humour... can I introduce you to The Last Kids on Earth (novel with illustrations) and Secret Coders (graphic novels). My kid has devoured these and now we need more, more, more from these busy authors! 🤞🤞

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Awesome! I had the same trouble with my nephew. He loved Alcatraz vs the Evil Librarians for instance, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and later the Series of Unfortunate Events , but had no interest in the many other that I thought would be right up his alley... no Percy Jackson or Eragon. 7y

Last Kids on Earth is a Modern Fantasy graphic novel about a kids trying to survive when a zombie apocalypse this their town. This novel is great for IR. https://texasbluebonnetaward2018.wordpress.com/the-last-kids-on-earth/ provides a variety of instructional activities for the classroom.

DominiqueL I would use this novel to teach a lesson on the importance of government. Student would discuss why anarchy is bad and then work in groups to create their own survival rules. 7y
DominiqueL The UDL principles that apply are 1.3 offer alternatives for visual information, 3.2. Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships, 4.1 Vary the methods for response and navigation, 5.1 Use multiple media for communication, and 8.3 Foster collaboration and community. The ESOL strategies that I'd use are using small groups, slow pacing, and teaching think, pair and share strategies in cooperative groups. #UCFLAE3414F17 7y

This was fun. Zombies and monsters have popped up in town, and most people are either zombies or ran out of town, leaving these kids to fend for themselves. But they respond by coming up with ingenious weapons and ways to survive. Oh, and taking lots of pics and making a monsterworld bucket list! Nice almost graphic novel feel, too.

Leniverse Can I ask how old your son is? Or what age bracket you recommend the book for? 8y
MeganAnn My son loved this one as well and the sequel is just as fun! 👌🏻 8y
MeganAnn @Leniverse my son is 8 and in 2nd grade and he loved it. He reads well for his age and didn't have too much trouble with it, but a slightly older reader would probably find it a bit easier to read on their own. I would say 8-12 would be a good age range depending on their reading level. 8y
See All 8 Comments
Leniverse @MeganAnn Thanks. I'll keep this in mind for my zombie loving kids then. Though my 6-year old might be too young. He's also scared of his own shadow. 8y
CogsOfEncouragement @Leniverse My son is 10. Good question. This book has lots of humor to make the fact that trusted adults are gone or are now zombies. There are also larger than a building monsters to contend with. Again, told in a funny way-but a sensitive kid may not find it so funny. 8y
Leniverse @CogsOfEncouragement Okay, that sounds like something my daughter would love. She's 10 and fearless. She will find it empowering, I think. Whereas her brother will freak and focus on "the parents have become zombies?!?!" 8y
CogsOfEncouragement @leniverse The book has a few themes, one being girl power! 8y
Leniverse @CogsOfEncouragement Ih good! Def putting this down as a potential for the next Dewey's Readathon then! I always buy them something each for that. 8y
