Ship of Magic (The Liveship Traders, Book 1)
Ship of Magic (The Liveship Traders, Book 1) | Robin Hobb
As addictive as morphine THE TIMES From the author of the classic Farseer trilogy, Ship of Magic begins an epic tale of pirates, sentient ships, magic, sea serpents, slave revolts, dashing heroes and bloody battles. On the northernmost point of the Cursed Shores lies Bingtown, a bustling hub of exotic trade and home to a proud merchant nobility famed for its extraordinary vessels. Only Bingtown liveships can negotiate the perilous waters of the Rain Wild River and plunder the riches found upstream, but such vessels are made from the most precious commodity in the world a material with the ability to become sentient and so are extremely rare. The fortunes of one of Bingtowns oldest families rest on the newly awakened liveship Vivacia. For Althea Vestrit, the ship is her rightful legacy. But the fate of Vivacia and the Vestrits may ultimately lie in the hands of the dark and charming pirate, Kennit, who lusts after such a ship and has plans of his own . . .

I cannot even begin to describe the experience of reading this book. It's literally like falling into the pages headfirst and living within the words. I'm not the least bit interested in hurrying through this series. I've reached my yearly book goal. I'm going to thoroughly enjoy this trilogy and I don't care to rush through even one page. 5 stars and above. Am I into pirates and ships normally? No. But I love this. What great writing.

Mitch I adored these books - so glad you‘ve discovered them 3w

I'd definitely say this was on the border between low pick and so-so mainly because none of the characters were able to make sound decisions. I got so much second hand embarrassment because everything they chose was not good. The only real character to root for is the stupid ship but even she had bad reasoning.

Robin Hobb creates a magical world, this has to be different to any book I‘ve read before with Liveships, Pirates, sea serpents, etc. These take a while to get into and despite being fantasy has great linkages to the real world and the down trodden way women have been treated throughout history.

A BIG read but some interesting plot lines and interested to see where this is taken in book 2.

1. I‘m in Bingtown and on a Liveship travelling the Cursed Shores in Robin Hobb‘s world with the tagged book.

2. I always love books set in Scotland, and especially in the remote parts of Scotland, and we regularly visit these areas on holiday so the books remind me of our holidays. So much great crime fiction set in these areas.

I'm trying a different tactic with my #BookSpin list for 2024. I know I bemoan my chunkster curse but I think I'm just going to lean into it this time. I organized my physical book tbr by page number and then put the highest page counts first. Then anything I add each month after will have a smaller page count than those already on the list. I'm excited to see how this plays out. As always thanks to @TheAromaofBooks for hosting!

I love the way Robin Hobb writes, her sentences are cozy which is something considering how brutal her plots are.

There's a lot being said here about women. How society and tradition tie our hands both in the present day and in our futures.

Loved the liveships, how they come to be, how they operate, how they are sustained. Paragon is a great liveship and I'm incredibly interested in where his story line is going.

Ruthiella Robin Hobb is amazing. I just finished the second in the Tawny Man trilogy. 👍 13mo

Holy Smoke!

I missed Fitz & Nighteyes for a few chapters then ….

Possibly in my top ten series of all time!

Sentient ships that bond to family members. Pirates! Awesome new characters!! Love some HATE some!

It you like her style of writing … Liveship Traders is starting out STRONG! It ended abruptly but there‘s 2 more books in this trilogy.

Highly recommend!

Didn't have to think very hard about March's pick... Robin Hobb is in a league of her own. I didn't think any other series could rival Fitz & The Fool, but I was wrong, she has captured my imagination all over again with the Liveships trilogy.

Epic, original, emotional, incredible... I'm on the third book now.

I have to give c-RAE-dit to @RaeLovesToRead for this recommendation. I haven't read any of the other Hobb trilogies. There may be better starting points to introduce oneself to the sprawling fictional world she's created. Still, what impressed me most about this book was how intimate it felt - a handful of characters and settings rendered in exquisite detail that still managed to give a sense of the larger world outside the story. 5⭐️

Sorting through my fantasy chunksters and trying to decide where to go after finishing Stormlight.

Do I dive into Wheel of Time knowing there's a bzillion of them to come?

Do I keep it Sanderson and move straight on to Mistborn?

Do I trust my lovely friend Tim and go for Malazan next?

Do I continue my journey with Robin Hobb? (I told myself I'd read the Liveships before I bought the next Fitz and the Fool trilogy)

Or do I go King Arthur?

Mitch No competition - it‘s Hobb all the way! 3y

vivastory A lot of great choices, but I have to agree with @branwen 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Mitch @wanderinglynn @Branwen @vivastory Thank you all so much for the input! 💕 Looks like it's between Hobb & Sanderson! I've got a while left to decide... Stormlight is enormous, I'm a slow/distractable reader and I'm only halfway through 😅 3y
Ruthiella It‘s like choosing a favorite child! 😅 I‘m currently reading the last book in the Liveship Traders and I started with Assassin‘s Apprentice in 2015! Slow and steady wins the race! 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Ruthiella I read the first trilogy over many years too... I wasn't too enamoured with the third instalment (will explain why below under spoiler tag) but then I heard there was a further trilogy 🥰🥰 I told myself I would read them in order though! 3y
RaeLovesToRead I couldn't bear Burrich not knowing that Fitz was still alive. It was just left with them living separate lives and it broke my heart 💔 I really hope this is rectified in the next trilogy!!! 3y
Ruthiella @RaeLovesToRead Uh oh. That may get answered in the Tawny Man trilogy or in the Fitz and the Fool trilogy, but Liveship Traders is 99.9% separate from the Farseer trilogy. You won‘t get your answer yet. 😢 3y
LazyOwl So many good books. Very tough decision 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Ruthiella I've heard it's an awesome series though? 3y
RaeLovesToRead @LazyOwl I knowww! 😭😭 I wish I could close myself off in a little fantasy bubble and read them all!!! 3y
Ruthiella @RaeLovesToRead It‘s very good. It‘s faster paced than the Farseer books and has a good balance of female and male characters and fantastic character development. 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Ruthiella That's great! I love Robin Hobb. I don't trust her not to break my heart though haha. 3y
DaveGreen7777 Hmmm… Mistborn is actually a lot more fast paced than Stormlight, so it‘s a much different kind of read, but personally I like to spread out an author‘s books instead of reading them one after the other… even one as talented as Sanderson! I‘ll vote for Hobb since her writing style is quite different from Sanderson‘s and Jordan‘s so it will be a change of pace. 😁 3y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Hi Dave ? The reason I often end up spreading books in series out is because I end up "saving them". I don't like for them to be over! It looks like Ship of Magic is the frontrunner for where I go next, although I'm Stormlighting along nicely at the mo ? 3y
DaveGreen7777 @RaeLovesToRead YES! That‘s exactly how I feel, I don‘t want to read through a series too quickly, because I don‘t want it to be over. 😩 I like knowing I still have books left in the series to look forward to! 🥺 3y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 I'll probably die never knowing what happened to Fitz and the Fool 😭😭😭 The downside to Robin Hobb is that I DEEPLY CARE what happens to the characters, because they are so real to me! 3y

I enjoyed this from the first chapter to the last. From the colourful cast to the beautiful setting to the story threads to be pulled in book two, it had me engrossed. Arguably a better start than the Farseer trilogy I felt like I was watching some kind off strategy game where I can‘t see the whole board, but every players move seems integral to the end point, which is admittedly, a long way off yet. CampbellTaraL What @Copwithabook said. I'm still working on the same (short) book I had started 3/12. 🤐 5y
Copwithabook @AlaMich The Count of Montenegro Cristo took me forever to finish! To this day, it is the only movie that I enjoyed more than the book 😬 5y
jewright It‘s hard to find time to read right now. My reading has slowed down a lot too. 5y
Birdsong28 Just read what you can, there is no contest. I know you might feel like there is one but just read what you feel is good for you. I myself have read more than I normally do if I am working but that is my thing, if you don't read a single word during this time then that is ok as well. Just go at your own pace. There is no judging you ( well not on here anyway) Sending you lots love 😘 ❤️ 📚 📖 5y
AlaMich @Copwithabook 😂 I‘m actually still enjoying it a lot. I‘m a slow reader under the best of circumstances, but these are clearly not the best of circumstances. 5y

Spent most of my day out in the garden reading this gem.

I have so many feelings, I absolutely loved this book.

Jumping back into some Robin Hobb. 880 pages long and hoping to finish this by Sunday. I will give it a good try. 😂

CrowCAH Woah that‘s quite the challenge; good luck! This is a book/series I‘ve wanted to dive into at some point. 5y

Really need to disappear into a story right now. My anxiety is rampant, my concentration shot. I need something to distract me from reality for the sake of my mental health.

Stay in, stay safe folks.

#Two4Tuesday
1- Hard question! I want to learn, be entertained. I want to be transported and look at the world different when I‘m finished!

2- sometimes - I usually go up rather than down.

TheSpineView Thanks for playing! Happy Tuesday! 5y
