My love of horror reading began with the Fear Street books by R.L. Stine. I still remember the exact area of the Shopko where they were displayed - right next to The Babysitters Club books. 😂😂 I‘m sure they are all so cheesy now, but the cover art is still on point! #scarathlonphotochallenge #fear #blackcatcrew

BookwormAHN This is what I thought of for that challenge as well. I used to love these books 🐈‍⬛️ 1y
Oryx I was obsessed with Fear Street books! 1y
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks @BookwormAHN @Oryx I have some packed away somewhere. I should dig them out for Scarathlon 2024!! 1y
RedxoHearts I always loved Goosebumps but never got to read any of the Fear Street books. I've been watching the new Goosebumps TV show and it's making me want to reread a few 1y

Here‘s my #bookspinbingo / #scarathlon October TBR list ready to go!! So excited for the month to start! I had to cross some stuff out to update the list for newer finds (I got a little excited and started making the list weeks ago 😆) but hopefully it‘s readable.

Emilymdxn I am exaaaactly the same about making my scarathlon tbr lists and then being so excited I read all of it early 😬 glad to know it‘s not just me! 1y

Late to post but we finished Fear Street & started The Watcher! I absolutely LOVED the Fear Street trilogy. The Watcher on the other hand? After every episode, I muse aloud, “I‘m not sure if I like this.” I have a feeling I‘m going to get to the end of the season & *still* be saying the same thing. 😅

+10 (Fear Street, based on a book) +15 (5x3, The Watcher) +1 participation point = +26 added to #Scarathlon2022 total. #TeamMonsterMash

The last movie isn‘t my favorite. It feels super VVitch to me, and that movie greatly bores me. I hope they end up making more, or at least more in this universe considering that after-credits scene.

I watched the next Fear Street movie (1978) and it scared me so much!!!! Much scarier than the first one, but still very fun. I had to watch something funny afterward to be able to sleep tonight.

Clwojick I loved the first two, but didnt make it through more than 20 mins of the third. 😆 3y
ferskner @Clwojick Ooooooo why? That's the one I've been the most excited about because I love the Salem Witch Trials. 3y

ferskner @Clwojick 🤣 @Chrissyreadit They're called Fear Street with years after them. The first one is 1994. I'm not usually a slasher person but they were fun and a good mix of slasher and supernatural. 3y
Clwojick @Chrissyreadit The 90's vibes are incredible! 3y
Chrissyreadit @Clwojick yes! 90‘s vibes were really well done! I watched the first one last night- and will watch the other two also. 3y

Holy crow these movies were good!! I‘ll admit I‘ve never actually read Goosebumps or Fear Street (RL Stine wasn‘t allowed in my house as a kid) but these movies are NOT kid friendly! Super gorey, lots of swearing, but very very fun! I had a great time watching them, even though I partially called the ending in the first movie. Excited to see if they‘ll make more!

Being that in middle school I made regular trips to the thrift shop near my apt to look for VC Andrews and Fear St books, there's a good chance the remains of my collection are just one big #ThriftStoreFind ! I put these out specifically for Halloween, because spooky nostalgia 🎃

Has anyone else watched the #FearStreet trilogy on Netflix? What did you think?
I‘ll preface this by saying I‘ve not read R.L.Stine‘s Fear Street books that the trilogy (set in 1994, 1978, and 1666) is based on.
Regardless of its source material, it‘s exactly what you‘d expect from a Netflix event like this and despite reviews that make comparisons to the books (pointless to do) it‘s fun if you just roll with it. Beware terrible Irish accents 😉

Kimberlone I really enjoyed this series of anthology films, even as a person who doesn‘t engage much with horror films or fiction. I know I read a few Goosebumps books back in the 90s but I have no connection to the Fear Street series. Really appreciated the film and era references, and that it really commits to the violence/gore. 3y
Oryx I liked it a lot - fun nostalgia (but terrible accents - bless them, they tried) 3y
Reggie After the first movie, I felt guilty because as a queer person I feel like I should always root for other queer people. But after the first movie, if one of the lesbians had been killed I would have been ok with it. They just grated on my nerves. But by movies 2&3 I was back on team lesbian. 3y

I was excited to start this movie trilogy since I was a huge fan of the Fear Street books when I was younger. But after the first film, I don't think I'm going to continue it. I am NOT into slasher films.

I just finished the movie series on Netflix last night. I know I read some of the goosebumps books but I'm not sure if I read any of the fear street books. The movies were good but definitely not for children. I may have to check out some of the books and see how they stand up.

Would the books be too advanced/mature for my 11 year old niece?

xicanti I read them all when I was 10 and 11, so I‘m sure she‘ll be fine unless she‘s especially sensitive to horror. 3y

❤️ In my youth it was without a doubt the Fear Street books. I am sure I read and owned at least 40. More recently I would say Stephanie Plum at about 19 books as well as Women‘s Murder Club currently at 16.
🧡 I am not sure I have completely given up on Stephanie Plum but I haven‘t read the last 4 books.
💛 I don‘t purchase any books - strictly a library girl

JoScho @CoffeeK8 exactly. I can remember when I would anxiously await the new one each summer and buy it and read it in a day and now I‘m just like eh. 7y
KathyWheeler I feel the same way about the Stephanie Plum books. I used to read them as soon as they came out, but up around 12 or 13, one of the books I read wasn‘t funny or interesting and I quit reading them. I may go back eventually. 7y

I had dinner at my dad's house last night, also the house I grew up in. I can't believe he didn't toss my childhood books, but I rescued a bunch lol. @callielafleur and listening to the Teen Creeps podcast have inspired me to maybe reread them. But really, why did I like The Babysitters Club so much?!?

Also, that Manassas Mall mug is now the most 80s thing I own.

claffy_reads I love so many things about this post 😍. That mug!! Mall Madness was a favorite when I was a kid. Full disclosure: I was never allowed to read the Fear Street books when I was young. My mom thought they were too sexy/scary for a kids... but I ALWAYS wanted to and always tried to sneak them (also ALWAYS got caught). But I'm glad I'm reading these now as an adult, because I can truly appreciate their campy glory to its fullest!
