I loved this book. I walked away and wanted a friendship like the main characters. The plot was really interesting. The first half was a little slow but the second half made up for that by being incredible. The characters were incredible. I would totally recommend for anyone who loves historical fiction and best friends!!

Still not on time but I finally completed this month‘s #yabuddyread I really thought this historical spy story was interesting but I wasn‘t a big fan of the writing style which made this more of a chore to read. Still I liked it but didn‘t love it.

Daisey I read all of these a few years ago, so I probably won't have comments for the other questions. At that time, I liked Rose Under Fire the most (I struggle with unreliable narrators) and actually had forgotten about The Pearl Thief completely. 3y

megnews @Daisey I don‘t always like unreliable narrators. But in this case I felt it served a necessary purpose and added to the suspense. I think I‘ll definitely read the others. (edited) 3y

Peddler410 I read Code Name Verity when it first came out but have it read the others - it think I need to reread this one first 😊 Shortly after reading Code Name Verity, a biography came into my library that is the perfect companion — drawing a blank right now. I recommend both books when students ask for WWII stories. 3y

megnews Until they mentioned that rookie mistake, I thought the whole thing was because of an accident. Once they mentioned that, I think she knew exactly what she was doing. 3y

IndoorDame I‘m still not sure. Her real mission in France is never revealed to the reader, but Maddie tells us she knew what it was during her interview with the reporter. If that‘s true would she have been as worried as she was when Julie went incommunicado? Or was Julie lying to her too? 3y

Maddie flew but wasn‘t a part of the spy world like Julie so while she knew Julie was in a mission, she wouldn‘t have known how Julie planned to do it and probably really believed their papers got mixed up and Julie accidentally caught. 3y

Butterfinger They were willing to die for the other. Maddie and the plane. Julie and the made up codes. And they were willing to kill for each other. That was my big thing. I kept putting myself and Keziah, my childhood best friend, in that scene. Could I have done it? Could she? 3y

IndoorDame I was really impressed with the strength of their friendship and how well it was written, given how little time they actually spent together. That was one of the stubble things that made the war seem real to me in this book. In another life they would be work colleges, but here they‘re family. 3y

Butterfinger It's a spy book. I expected that. In fact, I thought Julie was Maddie and vice versa. 3y

IndoorDame The narrative styles were so different, it took a while for me to get my bearings again in part 2. Once I did the plots started to sync up more and I actually found it satisfying to get both girls‘ perspectives. 3y

Butterfinger I understand she had to keep up her act so no one would doubt, but it was a good act. If she was truly a sympathetic person, why didn't she escape and join the resistance? This plot has more holes than I thought. 3y

megnews @Butterfinger I feel Engel got swept up in the propaganda at the beginning and was not part of the resistance but along the way some shred of humanity remained and she tried to help. I think some people have to work from the inside in order to have certain knowledge and be effective. 3y

IndoorDame @megnews @Butterfinger I did find her to be sympathetic. She took a lot of risks, and she does say she‘s leaving the country shortly, so she‘s clearly not complacent. 3y

mrp27 I couldn‘t figure out if she was a double agent or if she just came to see the light so to speak. 3y

IndoorDame There‘s both a lot of emotional truth in the narrative, and a lot of hidden codes for her side 3y

mrp27 Julie told her truth as she knew it and in so many different layers. Her friendship with Maddie, her commitment to the resistance. I don‘t feel we truly get to know Julie but we get to know her bravery above all else. 3y

Butterfinger I just assumed it was accidental in the rush to pack. If we are to assume it was intentional, then that means they didn't want Julie to have papers and planned to sabotage her chance of survival. THEY KNEW SHE WOULD BE ARRESTED. I didn't like this question. 3y

megnews @Butterfinger for the longest time I thought it was an accident. I think Julie did it to save Maddie and possibly to get caught. I don‘t think Maddie had a clue of this plan. 3y

IndoorDame If it wasn‘t accidental (which I also assumed) my only guess is Julie. I had a lot of questions about this when Maddie was reading Julie‘s confession though 3y

mrp27 I was hoping it would be made clear how and why the papers were switched. I agree there are three possibilities. Julie was set up, it was accidental or Julie did it. I like the idea best of Julie doing it herself. Shows her commitment to her duties and her heroism. 3y

Butterfinger I think Julie wanted to keep her identity secret. I had trouble with that type of writing at the beginning. It didn't seem real. She was writing a narrative while being tortured. Maybe it was her defiance in writing it that way. I liked Maddie's narrative better. I knew what happened and what was going on. 3y

megnews @Butterfinger I found Maddie‘s narration easier to follow. But I loved both girls voices. Was definitely always trying to figure out what Julie was really trying to tell us. 3y

IndoorDame Julie was definitely a complicated character. I was really struck by the scene in which she reveals her job to him in the confession, and wonders if he hadn‘t already guessed or if it would have been better to tell right away. If she hadn‘t said that I‘d have assumed that‘s what she was trying to hide for as long as possible. 3y

mrp27 I liked Julie‘s narrative but it was very confusing, I was constantly trying to figure it all out. I assumed she had some sort of game plan for writing her confession in 3rd person. Butterfinger He enjoys watching her be tortured. He is a sadist. The only human quality was his love of his daughter. I didn't see any redeeming qualities. 3y

megnews @Butterfinger I can completely see people viewing it this way. But I wondered if he was trying to hold off her death because he couldn‘t stomach it because he saw his daughter in her. 3y

IndoorDame @megnews @Butterfinger I also saw something very human in him. He backs off in the level of her torture at some point, and seems to indulge her even though it‘s clear she‘s drawing out the writing. I didn‘t necessarily equate it with his daughter, but I can definitely see that as a possible reason. 3y

mrp27 Mostly I think it‘s because he‘s deeply conflicted and then of course him having a daughter must affect him. 3y

Wein does a good job here of picking a specific perspective on WWII that we don‘t get too often, making her characters come to life, and gracefully navigating that line of how devastating does it need to be to tell the story faithfully, and how redemptive does it need to be for the sake of the story.

Maybe it‘s just me and my feelings, but I had a hard time connecting with these characters. In reading the author‘s notes at the end, it seems like she worked hard to create a story that was centered around things she was interested in like female pilots and spies. Even though it‘s historical fiction not fact, it just seemed like too many fantastical events happened to give the story any plausibility, and that‘s important to me in this genre.
