This week's #readingroundup
Favorite book of the week tagged.
All of them were good, Hester was my least favorite.
I love this edition, each story and essay is followed by a quick afterword by Butler giving her thought process, inspirations, and or reasonings for writing choices made. It helps to understand the stories, and now I know if anyone asks where to start with her work I will point them here.
My favorite of the short pieces is The Evening and the Morning and the Night. love the way she plays with genetics and situations of control.
Had to get my first ever filling at the dentist this morning so I went to the local bookstore afterward as a treat
A really powerful short story, wow. I'll be thinking about this one for a while, and Butler's afterword on the story behind it.

Bloodchild is a very good sci fi story.. Memorable!!! Humans are on another planet and have to help the species on this planet to survive. Speech Sounds is about a future Earth where no one can speak and many can't read.
Amnesty is one of the strangest sci fi pieces I've read. Noah is a translator for aliens that live in a collective and resemble bushes. They first did experiments on humans, but are now trying to live with them peacefully. +more
By the end of the month, Tuesday, I am going to finish Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austin,
Bloodchild and Other Stories by Octavia Butler, and
From the Heart: Eight Rules to Live By - by Robin Roberts.
Maybe more, we'll see!
I'm posting one book per day from the ever growing unread stacks in my personal library. No description or explanation, just books I own and plan to read. #tbr
Day 63 (Audible edition)
I‘ve been trying for the last hour to pinpoint why I loved this book so much. The stories were great, spooky and compelling, but there‘s more to it. I love Octavia Butler‘s voice. I love the realness of the worlds she created in the book, mind you, I wouldn‘t want to live in any of them. I loved the afterwards. I loved how the essays felt like I was reading the words of a caring friend who won‘t lie to you, but wants to encourage you all the same.
Again, not my usual genre but so imaginative and well written. I love that Butler wrote an Afterword for each story telling from where/how the story originated and what her intent was.

Day 3
We present here seven books that will remain in our minds, because they touched us so much, changed us. No further comment!

It‘s been awhile since I read this collection of stories. Still as good as ever. Oddly appropriate to the times.
Genius. If you have a weak stomach don‘t read Bloodchild. All the stories were great and I love the afterword because it explained her thought processes. I learned a lot and Googled things.
This was a solid collection of short stories and a couple of essays thrown in there. What tickled me were the notes after each entry from Octavia and the insight into her inspiration. There‘s an afterword where she describes the 3 genetic disorders she uses to make up the one she uses in a story and if you‘re interested in genes gives you a reading list. She was amazing. Bloodchild, The Evening the Morning and the Night, and Amnesty were my faves.
My haul from Malaprop‘s in Asheville, NC!! I spent so much money they gave me a free ARC. My blind date with a book turned out to be Blood Child by Octavia E. Butler and HOLY SHIT DID I CHOOSE WELL! I‘ve never read anything by her before and now I want them all. I can‘t wait to start on the rest of the stack #bookhaul #ncbookspt1 #queerlit #lgbt+
This collection has incredible range. There‘s nonfiction, autobiography, alien invasions, medical misadventures, man made plagues, and post-apocalyptic madness. Each story somehow creates entire worlds with details and mythology, and you buy into this collective knowledge even within a few pages. The stories are pretty short, but somehow the totally perfect length. Great for a quick read.
“Finally, don‘t worry about imagination. You have all the imagination you need, and all the reading, journal writing, and learning you will be doing will stimulate it. Play with your ideas. Have fun with them. Don‘t worry about being silly or outrageous or wrong. So much of writing is fun.”
Read and enjoyed Kindred last year, but wasn‘t sure if I wanted to read more, wanted something to squeeze in while I wanting on some holds to go through and it so pleased I picked this. Definitely adding more Butler to the reading list!
I am definitely reading case law right now. Under no circumstances would I be reading short stories on my Kindle app during working hours ... 😶
I‘m still coming back to this quote as I read some on my science fiction list for this year.
I‘ve so enjoyed reading these short stories between other books, I‘m going to miss it now that it‘s finished. As always, Butler amazes me with the unique worlds she creates, she was truly such an amazing talent.

Really enjoying this collection of short stories, and it's my first time reading Octavia Butler! Anyone else reading this right now?

Started this book of short stories last night, the first story was so creepy! Interestingly though, Butler puts afterwards after each story describing what she was thinking of/going for and how the story is usually interpreted...and strangely I got some of that and a bit more too.
So interesting to see how stories hold up, and mean different things in different ages depending on the experiences of the reader.

Bloodchild is back with me! I‘m almost finished with My Life in France, so that should be on its way back to you early next week, @parttimedomestic. It‘s been fun, ladies! #texeast #lmpbc #catsoflitsy #Phoenix
I‘ve slowly been picking up Octavia Butler‘s every time I see them come up on sale. Today‘s one if the few I haven‘t “collected” yet.
@TheNextBook , @BarbaraTheBibliophage , and those currently in the #EarthseedBuddyRead might be interested in this sale today.
This is why book clubs are fun! I‘m glad I read this collection for the #texeast #lmpbc even though I‘m not a short story person or a sci fi person. Some of the stories really weirded me out, like the title one, and others were interesting food for thought. Although it didn‘t convert me to either genre, it‘s good to get out of my comfort zone and be exposed to a great author.
i am so happy i started my octavia butler experience with a collection of her short stories. i can definitely see how she has influenced some of my favorite black science fiction writers. i look forward to reading the rest of her work.
5🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟“Forget Talent. If you have it, fine. Use it. If you don‘t have it, it doesn‘t matter. As habit is more dependable than inspiration, continued learning is more dependable than talent. Never let pride or laziness prevent you from learning, improving your work, changing its direction when necessary. Persistence is essential...”-Octavia E. Butler ❤️🖤❤️This is definitely in my top 10 for best short story collection read this year by far😍
This is on its way to you @parttimedomestic! The expected delivery day is Thursday. :)

Just finished this a couple days ago for #lmpbc. I thought it was great! 😃 There‘s a lot to think about in this little book. I‘m looking forward to hearing what the rest of my group thinks about it. #texeast

Hey, #texeast ladies! I‘m getting close to finishing my pick, and I was wondering what you guys want to do in regards to reviewing our books. I know some groups are sharing their reviews on Litsy, but others are keeping their reviews for their group‘s books to themselves until they‘ve all been passed around, so I didn‘t want to post a review on here if you all wanted to go with the latter option. Do you guys have a preference about this?

Why did it take me so long to discover Octavia Butler? Oh well, now I have her entire catalogue to enjoy.
Only just learned that OB has a short story collection. Be still my heart! #shortstorycollection #readsoullit
