Historian | Elizabeth Kostova
To you, perceptive reader, I bequeath my history....Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters. The letters are all addressed to "My dear and unfortunate successor," and they plunge her into a world she never dreamed of-a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an inconceivable evil hidden in the depths of history. The letters provide links to one of the darkest powers that humanity has ever known-and to a centuries-long quest to find the source of that darkness and wipe it out. It is a quest for the truth about Vlad the Impaler, the medieval ruler whose barbarous reign formed the basis of the legend of Dracula. Generations of historians have risked their reputations, their sanity, and even their lives to learn the truth about Vlad the Impaler and Dracula. Now one young woman must decide whether to take up this quest herself-to follow her father in a hunt that nearly brought him to ruin years ago, when he was a vibrant young scholar and her mother was still alive. What does the legend of Vlad the Impaler have to do with the modern world? Is it possible that the Dracula of myth truly existed-and that he has lived on, century after century, pursuing his own unknowable ends? The answers to these questions cross time and borders, as first the father and then the daughter search for clues, from dusty Ivy League libraries to Istanbul, Budapest, and the depths of Eastern Europe. In city after city, in monasteries and archives, in letters and in secret conversations, the horrible truth emerges about Vlad the Impaler's dark reign-and about a time-defying pact that may have kept his awful work alive down through the ages.Parsing obscure signs and hidden texts, reading codes worked into the fabric of medieval monastic traditions-and evading the unknown adversaries who will go to any lengths to conceal and protect Vlad's ancient powers-one woman comes ever closer to the secret of her own past and a confrontation with the very definition of evil. Elizabeth Kostova's debut novel is an adventure of monumental proportions, a relentless tale that blends fact and fantasy, history and the present, with an assurance that is almost unbearably suspenseful-and utterly unforgettable.

I am in such a reading slump. This spring and early summer has been a whirlwind, but instead of finding solace in a book, I am asleep before my head hits the pillow. My darling only child graduated HS last month and heads off to college at the end of the summer. Bittersweet summer this year at my favorite place on the planet. The tagged book has been my infrequent bedtime read this summer. Maybe I‘ll actually finish before the summer‘s over!

I‘m so disappointed in the audiobook. The 50-year-old woman‘s narrative sounds like a young teenager and the father, in a conversation with his daughter, sounds like a rote speech rather than a conversation. I‘m afraid the audio will undo my tremendous love of this book. So I‘m moving to an audiobook for a different book, and will try to fit in reading my old worn-out version of the tagged book. #Turkey #foodandlit @Catsandbooks

1. I remember riding my bike to the tiny library in my small town and riding home, my new library books secure in the basket on the front. I would spend quite some time deliberating on my choices since I was only allowed to check out four—it was a tough decision!
2. Most of my books have come from bookstores, but a healthy amount from library book sales, as well.
3. The tagged book—and it‘s quite good!

I‘ve been in a horrible reading slump the last couple of months. It took me forever to get through this book, but it was great. It seems some dislike it for getting too far into the weeds of Eastern European history but that was what made it compelling for me. Great reimagining of the Vlad Tepes/Dracula connection as if followed by academic historians. This book made me want to dig further into Eastern European history.

Darklunarose Just finished this yesterday and loved it too. It didn‘t get too deep into the history for me. In fact that is part of what made it such a solid story for me. 2y

A story about the history and horror of Dracula and a quest to find his tomb. Listened to the audio version. The narrators were very good. Rich with a lot of historical details, suspenseful, and a few scary moments. I read it when it first came out and decided I wanted to re-vist it again. This is not a fast read and you do have to pay attention but I enjoyed the stories within the story and found it to be as eerie as I remembered it.

Very informative. Long-winded, reads like a Victor Hugo novel--but shares a lot of historical facts and inspires wanderlust. It can get confusing on who's perspective you're reading when there's stories within stories within letters.

Here we go, another month spinning. This is such a fun and effective way to finally getting round to those long neglected books on the dusty tbr shelf.
Trying to think of ways to condense reading challenges, so this months picks include ones for my nature writing and read harder challenges.

@TheAromaofBooks
#bookspinbingo #bookspin

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I think the only way to condense is planning, research, and more planning. I've found a few that fit prompts in 3 or 4 different challenges. I am a fan of using Goodreads groups & lists for ideas. 3y
AllDebooks @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick It really is, I usually wing it as and when I choose a prompt. This year I've really thought about what subjects/genres I want to read and researched appropriate books. I started a book journal. Honestly I've loved that as much as the reading, which surprised me as I always thought it would eat into valuable reading time. 3y
TheAromaofBooks I've also been planning my reading more than I have in the past, and have been pleasantly surprised at how I am actually getting books off the TBR. I chose a few challenges and dedicated them to specific piles of books and it's really helping!! 3y

I reached 47% and finally had to skip to the end to see if it was worth pushing through. #unpopularopinion This was such a big disappointment for me. For about 500 pages, I was enjoying it immensely, I loved the rich details, and the mystery kept me guessing. Between pages 500-600 I began to lose my patience, I felt like the author was artificially holding back information, tossing me bits and pieces, then making me read lots of unimportant stuff. During the final 100 pages, when the big reveal came, I couldn't believe my eyes 🤦‍♀️

eeclayton Seriously? Dracula was doing what he was doing because he needed a librarian? Also, the final showdown was so meh. It's a shame that there wasn't a better motive at the heart of the book because it started out so promising. 3y
eeclayton This was my #BookSpin for January @TheAromaofBooks 3y
TheAromaofBooks I get so frustrated when authors hold back information in a way that makes the story drag out instead of in a way that feels natural. Another pet peeve is when main characters are given info that I don't get - “he read the letter, and suddenly everything was clear“ - but I don't get to read the letter for another 50 pages! 3y
eeclayton @TheAromaofBooks At least the author wasn't guilty of the second one: each letter is immediately presented to the reader and each letter is extremely detailed 😂 But I agree it's so annoying when it happens. It makes one feel cheated. 3y

#FallTreasures - Slow Burn: I feel that this is considered a slow moving story by many. Readers seems to have a polarized opinion of its merit. It‘s love or hate with no middle ground. I thought that it was captivating not in a thriller sense which is maybe what most folks are seeking being that it is supposedly a vampire story. Its hypnotic trance is in the writing. It is lush and brooding.👇🏽

Nute Filled with rich descriptive wording and long winding passages. It is abundant in that way and probably rendered unappealing to some folks. But recall from the title it is a story of the researcher. A person on a trek of discovering and confirming information. By natural tendency it holds the expectation of being convoluted and meandering. It is her family‘s history and how it intertwines with that of Vlad the Impaler.👇🏽 3y
Nute There were many chilling parts. Does it amount to a scary book? I don‘t think so. I like the phrases that someone used, “intellectual suspense” and “casually erudite” and “a compelling inversion of literature and history.” Yeah, that‘s more the ticket.

Always a favorite book.
Highly recommended!
