I‘ve been working on new book sleeves for the Etsy shop but had a question for those of you who purchase book sleeves - what size sleeve to you most commonly buy? I offer 3 sizes: small (7 x 9 in), medium (8 x 10 in) and large (9 x 11 in). Thank you in advance for all your responses!

TheSpineView I like the large ones because it will fit the bigger hardcover books. 3y
Megabooks I have mostly larges but a handful of mediums too. I don‘t buy the smalls. 3y
TheBookHippie I have large and medium equally. Small I have two one for signet one for kindle. 3y

My fellow Littens, I just got reamed out on Facebook from an admin of a group and a couple other members giving me crap for charging for professional reviews of books. They were pretty mean about it. Saying reviews should be done for the love of books and should always be free.

My question is, do you think it is okay for a person to make a living off of spending the time and effort to read and write reviews for books?

MaureenMc Hell yes! There have been professional reviewers for years. (E.g. The New York Times Book Review) 6y
VioletBramble It's definitely okay. I wish I could do it. A number of my "friends" on LibraryThing are professional book critics. There are even a few people who have other professions but write paid book reviews for magazines on the side. Where do they think book reviews in the New York Times or London Review come from? They're just jealous. 6y
Pandareads37 Yes it's okay 6y
See All 37 Comments
Samplergal Of course it‘s okay! People are overrated sometimes. 6y
theresidentromantic Definitely jealous. If my blog was popular and people wanted a spot, I'd charge. It's hours of your time and a book you didn't select. It's simply an author paying for publicity. 6y
MirrorMask I assume book critics and book reviewers are one in the same, so in that case you should get paid. If they want free feedback, they should ask friends and family. 6y
knittedgnome Nothing wrong with it at all!!! 6y
ReadingsByTheC Absolutely it's okay. 6y
RJHowe These days book reviews and their neutrality have become an important and complicated topic. One of the key factors is who is paying for the review. If PW or NYT are paying you to review the book that is arms length and clearly okay. If an author, or publisher is paying you for the review that gets a lot more grey. Amazon has been cracking down on bought reviews for quite some time. Tread carefully. 6y
BeansPage @RJHowe oh I heard that about Amazon. I make sure that if I do Amazon reviews I only charge the author a free copy of their book in order for me to read it and review it. 6y
GripLitGrl @RJHowe I think you nailed it in your response 👏👏👏 6y
RJHowe @GripLitGrl thank you m‘am 6y
HighLadyoftheStacks There was a really good discussion about this on the latest Book Riot podcast if you‘re interested. I think you should be paid for your time and effort; a well done book review doesn‘t just happen. There‘s a huge difference between a book review that examines what a book does well, and what it doesn‘t, and just giving something one star and calling it a day. 6y
tammysue Yes. Perfectly okay. 6y
LibrarianRyan I'm going to say this before I read any ones else's comments. If they are willing to pay you go for it. As long as your readers know it was a paid review and as long as the payer knows you are going to give an honest review I see nothing wrong with it. The key word here is honest. For both sides of the business the review should always be honest. If the payer isn't willing to get a bad review then don't do business with them. 6y
suvata I don‘t think the writers working for the New York Times Book Review section work for free. As far as I‘m concerned, a good reviewer is a legitimate job and should be monetarily compensated like any job. 6y
BeansPage @LibrarianRyan I make sure all my authors know that they will be getting an honest review even if they are paying me for the review. It's part of my policy. As much as I do for my authors and take care of them I also have to think about my subscribers and my readers and make sure that everything is on the level. So I 100% agree with you. 6y
LibrarianRyan Also, don't take commission for a book out of your comfort zone. If you are not a fan of cozy mystery then be honest and say it's not your preferred genre. 6y
LibrarianRyan Sorry. Walked into a meetin before finishing my thought. 6y
BeansPage @LibrarianRyan YES 100%! I'm always upfront and honest and if I get a review request from somebody who is writing a genre that I don't really care for I will try to get them to somebody else who can review the book for them or I will simply just turn it down. I will never accept payment to review a book that I know I will not like before even reading it. 6y
LibrarianRyan @HighLadyoftheStacks completely agree. 6y
LibrarianRyan @TheReadingMermaid exactly. Plus people mention other paid reviewer services. Yes PW and NYT pays. As an approved reviewer for Library Journal I know they do not. 6y
minkyb Given your standards and policies, of course you should be paid. Don‘t let anyone make you second guess yourself. 6y
Burghbookaddict Im sorry but you work off of a private blog so no. Youre not reviewing for a magazine, newspaper ect. Those people are journalists with degrees and professional experience. I know this is harsh, but book bloggers should just be happy they get a free book because you're not professional critics. I know bloggers put a lot of time into their stuff, but youre still not The New Yorker. Sorry yall can hate me if you want but thats the reality. 6y
BeansPage @laurenashley So freelance work is illegitimate in your opinion? 6y
Burghbookaddict What experience/education to you have that makes you qualified? Im not bashing anyone without a degree, Im just saying reading a lot of books isnt experience. I read a lot and if it was a feasible career path I would try to make money off of it, but it isnt. If youre looking to make money off your blog, you should get advertisers on it. That's the main way blogs make money. 6y
Burghbookaddict My othet question would be: how long have you been running you blog? Do you have a substantial following? I imagine you would have to have a pretty long reach for publishers/authors to consider paying you. 100 hits a day unfortunately isnt substantial in the world of the internet. Your blog would have to be generating constant traffic with thousands of hits. 6y
BeansPage @laurenashley Wow. LOL And I'm gonna stop right there. You've got some crazy ideas LOL 😋 6y
Burghbookaddict Ok well, I see you just posted this to have people tell you what you want to hear. Im not going to do that. So good luck on whatever youre hoping to achieve. 6y
RJHowe To me it is not about experience or education or any of that stuff, it is about perceived bias and ethics. A reviewer who is paid by the author is not neutral or perceived to be neutral. Would you trust a newspaper that was owned by a political party to be neutral even if it said it was? The ethics and optics are just bad and since there is already enough questionable practices in fringe publishing, you won‘t be helping matters. 6y
RJHowe If you want to review books for money why not apply to one of the legit services? Kirkus, PW and lots more are always looking for reviewers. 6y
BeansPage @laurenashley No sweetie, you came on and assumed and insulted me more than once so I am gracefully bowing out ✌🏻 6y
BeansPage @RJHowe Yes I am currently working on my resume for Kirkus. I understand what you're saying. 6y
Burghbookaddict @RJHowe That too. I didnt even consider that. I guess that is kind of a conflict of interest. 6y
Burghbookaddict @TheReadingMermaid I didnt insult you. I told you the truth. The book blog world is flooded with thousands of people doing the same thing. You would have to be providing something exceptional to set you apart and make it worth paying for 6y
CouronneDhiver I don‘t see any issue with it.... as long as you‘re clear with your intentions and an author/publisher and your readers will know that it‘s a paid review in advance. The only thing is not to get roped into positive reviews just because you were paid. (edited) 6y
CouronneDhiver Now you‘ve got me thinking! I‘m curious to see how well it goes ... if your product is detailed enough, you may find plenty of sources interested. On the other hand, you may find it challenging to acquire new clients since there are so many happy volunteers (me!) willing to review books for free. 🤔 6y

Does anyone have any ideas on what they do to track character's across series? I do like some character series by authors but when books come out so far apart, it's hard to remember the details, especially from earlier books in big series. Authors like Patricia Cornwall, Jo Nesbo, Micheal Connelly, Ian Rankin, etc.

minkyb Interesting question. Usually the author seems to provide a catch up in the first bit of the book. I am struggling with picking up a character again that I haven't read in years like Harry Bosch. Look forward to reading other comments. 7y
BostonBookAddict @minkyb that's my problem too! I usually read books like that in spurts and some of the references go far back into earlier books than the last one. I was wondering how other people kept track of these things! 7y

I need recommendations from the #littens. I would like to read a little bit more about political thoughts from the right. Probably more right of center is more accurate. But not sensationalism or polemic meant only to shock and enrage.

For all you Littens who also use Goodreads - is there a way to access the giveaways using the phone app? I don't see a link to the giveaways in the app anywhere, and it's a pain trying to log into the actual site using my phone, because it keeps taking me back to the app. Argh! And the Mikey-Cat refuses to give me any advice - he just wants to lie in the sunshine. Not that I blame him!

Lissa00 I've wondered that too! 8y
Brenley The only way I've been able to access them through my phone is when I get emails about giveaways and it takes me to the desktop site. It's somewhat frustrating because I use Goodreads as an extra credit for my 9th graders and its so difficult to use the groups on the app as well. 8y
Tanner @Lissa00 @Brenley Ok, so it's not just me! It's too bad, I would think it would be easy enough to put a link in the app (I never get emails about giveaways). 8y
