Nancy Drew 10: Password to Larkspur Lane
Nancy Drew 10: Password to Larkspur Lane | Carolyn Keene
48 posts | 45 read | 2 to read
Blue bells will be singing horses! This strange message, attached to the leg of a wounded homing pigeon, involves Nancy Drew in a dangerous mission. Somewhere an elderly woman is being held prisoner in a mansion, and Nancy is determined to find and free her. Meanwhile, the young detectives close friend, Helen, begs her to solve a second mystery. Helens grandparents, the Cornings, are frightened by a sinister wheel of blue fire that appears after dark in the woods outside their home at lonely Sylvan Lake. When Nancy discovers the significance of the eerie signal, she also learns that her two mysteries are connected.

4✨ Was reading this one during lunches and finally finished yesterday. I have so sweet students asking me how it was going when I was quickly finishing a chapter before the last bell rang. The danger in this one felt so real! Nancy is trying to solve a few mysteries: an unregistered carrier pigeon carrying a coded message, a disappearance of an elderly woman, and a locket with a family crest on it. Whew.. that was a wild ride! #NancyDrewBR

I enjoyed rereading this installment of the series with the #NancyDrewBR group. There was a lot of action, as well as an interesting use of homing pigeons.
@Librarybelle

The photo is of an old battered copy I found on my shelves. It was a library discard that one of my daughters brought home 20 years ago. The copies of this series that I'd read myself in my youth are now long gone!

kwmg40 @Puddlejumper This book fits prompt 15 of #gottacatchemall, “Combee: Set in summer“. I messed up the Google form by selecting the wrong prompt, so I resubmitted it a second time. Sorry, I hope the extra submission doesn't confuse you too much! (edited) 3mo

Compared to the last Nancy Drew mystery I thought this one was more exciting again, even though the second plot line was unnecessary for me. I liked the criminal of Carson Drew‘s past showing up. A funny thought, Bach then and nowadays people do still believe in the fountain of youth. ⛲️👶⛲️

Librarybelle I agree that this one was better than the last one! Thanks for sharing your thoughts in the discussion questions! 3mo

Nancy Drew #10! I liked this one a lot. Helen came back, but we still got Ned, George, and Bess -- and Bess was so brave! Nancy is apparently an expert diver, so add that to her list of skills. She got knocked out at least once. The last 40 pages were so fun. Loved the illustration of her hiding under a bed. That dog!!

5. Finally, let's discuss plot and storyline. Nancy once again has two mysteries to solve, and everyone seems to have a weird aversion to calling the police until it's too late! Sometimes, the second mystery seems a distraction, since it does not really tie in with the first mystery. This time, they do tie in together.

What did you think of the tie in? Was it plausible? Coincidental? A far reach by Karig? #NancyDrewBR

DGRachel I find all of the ND plot lines implausible, so the connection didn‘t seem like a bigger stretch than usual. I think what surprised me, and why I didn‘t love this book, was that I don‘t expect to be angered by these books. The gaslighting and mistreatment of the older women was infuriating. Righteous rage unexpected and kind of took away from my enjoyment of the Scooby-Do-ness of the series, which is not Nancy‘s fault or the author‘s. 3mo
Bookwormjillk The older women in the sinister fake hospital was super creepy to me. I wish they would have called the police! 3mo
lauraisntwilder I'm fine with everything always lining up and falling into place for Nancy, but meeting Mrs. Eldridge's family at the lake was just silly and unnecessary. She already knew her name by then. I guess Nancy hadn't saved enough lives. It was odd, too, that Nancy wouldn't call the police until that one specific woman was rescued, even though the others were in danger, too. 3mo
See All 11 Comments
Ruthiella Oops, I kinda already answered this in the previous question! 😂 I did think the coincidences were a little bit over the top in this one! 3mo
BarkingMadRead So many coincidences. When I was at a Nancy Drew con last year, we were told that the writers get an outline and they are told what to write, so I don‘t know how much falls on n each ghostwriter as far as plot goes. 3mo
mrp27 I wish the books would focus on one mystery at time. At first it was a nice plot device now it just feels overdone. Still, if I read these as a kid I probably wouldn‘t have minded. 3mo
Librarybelle @BarkingMadRead I heard the same thing years ago when I went to an author event for mystery author Susan Wittig Albert. She wrote some ND and had an outline to do and maybe a certain word count, but everything else she could create (though it had to be approved). @DGRachel @Bookwormjillk @lauraisntwilder @Ruthiella @BarkingMadRead @mrp27 3mo
CogsOfEncouragement @BarkingMadRead That‘s awesome. Sounds like a super fun con too! I smiled when Nancy saved Marie. Of course she did! Carson actually showed concern and got a little protective in this one, for a couple hours anyway! lol 3mo
Ruthiella @CogsOfEncouragement IKR? Carson is like, “of course I won‘t let you handle this alone!” And then he accompanies her to the lake house and says, “gotta fly to Chicago. Good luck!” 😂 3mo
MariaW From my point of view the second plot line was unnecessary and did not help much. The main plot would have interesting enough without the other one. But it was nice to have Helen back. 3mo
kwmg40 Like many others here, I found the plot highly implausible in places but I tried to not let that detract from my enjoyment. I'm sure that when I'd read these in my youth, I was definitely less critical! 3mo

4. Carson Drew has connections to the bad guy in this one. To me, the bad guy seems more sinister than some of the other bad guys--kidnapping, following people, and threatening further violence, to name a few. Then, we have the introduction of Effie, who is temporary housekeeper while Hannah is convalescing. Any thoughts on the introduced characters? Have you forgiven Bess and George yet for how they treated Nancy last time? #NancyDrewBR

DGRachel Nancy has forgiven them and I‘m sure by the next book I‘ll have completely forgotten, so as long as it‘s never brought up again, I‘ll consider it water under the bridge. 🤣 The baddie here was really dark. I was surprised by how sinister he was. Effie was a little much for me, but also a necessary light element. I think it‘s important to have light-hearted spaces to breathe in a dark or action heavy book. 3mo
Bookwormjillk I agree that the bad guy was much more sinister than in the past. Seems like Nancy, Bess, and George have forgotten about the whole thing so I guess I can too. 3mo
lauraisntwilder Effie seemed unnecessary because I don't see why the Drews need a housekeeper anymore. Of course they wouldn't let Hannah go, but surely Nancy can make her own food for a few days? I liked her though. She was a nice contrast to perfect Nancy. Thorne was dark, but it makes sense that Carson Drew would have enemies and I liked that aspect. Bess is my favorite, so all is forgiven! 3mo
See All 13 Comments
Ruthiella Effie was perhaps superfluous in a book already jam packed with plot and characters. But she was also a shot of humor. Adam Thorpe was scary. The coincidence of his connection to Carson Drew, the pigeon, the blue light…well, it was a little hard to take as an adult but I know as a child I would not have noticed. 3mo
BarkingMadRead I‘m pretty sure sure I will never trust Bess and George again 🤣 Effie was so random, and kind of wimpy, she didn‘t make a good showing 🤣 there were quite a few too many coincidences in this one! 3mo
dabbe If Bess were real, I'd be suing some of these writers for slander. Why does she always have to be described as “plump“? That seems to be the main way we're supposed to characterize her: Nancy's the titian-haired goddess, George is androgynous, and Bess is plump. Just a WEE bit prejudice IMHO. 3mo
PurpleyPumpkin Adam Thorpe seemed particularly sinister as far as ND bad guys go. I got a bit worried that actual violence might break out! But only for a minute. 😜 I still haven‘t forgiven Bess and George and I‘m a little put out that Nancy has and it‘s totally forgotten! Then again, if, as @DGRachel said, this incident is never mentioned again, perhaps I should let it go too. 😅 3mo
mrp27 I thought the Adam character being connected to Mr. Drew was a great angle. I wonder if we‘ll be seeing more of Effie. 3mo
Librarybelle I agree, @mrp27 …Carson‘s connection to Adam was good. I‘m not sure what to think of Effie—she‘s trying to be helpful, but also she‘s 16 and does not have the expertise of Nancy Drew. I do wonder if we will see her again… @DGRachel @Bookwormjillk @lauraisntwilder @Ruthiella @BarkingMadRead @dabbe @PurpleyPumpkin @mrp27 3mo
CogsOfEncouragement I forgave them before! lol Everything was much more time consuming to get done back then and having help to get it done seems a way to give Nancy freedom from being tethered to the house. @lauraisntwilder It will be fun if we see Effie again. 3mo
MariaW Again, Bess and George being flaky teenagers are forgiven right away. We would have been impressionable at this age as well. I was already waiting for a gangster put to jail by Carson Drew plotting his revenge, but he could have gotten an own story, not put up with the evil plans of others, this way Thorne somehow only is an evil sidekick. Effie was quite irritating for me. (edited) 3mo
kwmg40 Regarding Bess's and George's previous disloyalty, I feel that Nancy is too practical to worry about past issues like this one and she definitely has no inclination to pettiness! 3mo
kwmg40 @CogsOfEncouragement @Ruthiella I too find it hilarious that Carson tries to be a protective father but is totally OK with Nancy going off on her own to chase the bad guys. 3mo

3. How odd to say that homing pigeons play a role in a Nancy Drew mystery, but they do! And, of course our intrepid sleuth knows exactly what to do!

What do you know about carrier pigeons? Did you know that they have been used for centuries for conveying messages? I have links in the comments about the use of carrier pigeons during WWI, courtesy of the Imperial War Museums, and a link to the American Racing Pigeon Union. Have fun! #NancyDrewBR

DGRachel I know they‘ve been used throughout history and I‘ve always thought that their ability to reach a destination and then return to their home was pretty amazing considering the distances they fly. I had no idea there was an entire organization in the US dedicated to registering and tracking them though! I said something to my mom and her response was “oh, I know. We had to contact them when a homing pigeon landed in our yard”. 😳 3mo
lauraisntwilder My favorite line was, "Was Dr. Spire somehow involved in the mystery of the message attached to the pigeon's leg?" ? 3mo
See All 11 Comments
Ruthiella I knew they used to be used more widely for communication (maybe in part because this is one I did read as a child). 3mo
BarkingMadRead I knew they‘d been used a lot, and that they would fly home when released, I can‘t remember where I read about them before though 3mo
dabbe This is the first book I actually remember reading as a kid--all because of the homing pigeon! 😂 3mo
mrp27 I find the pigeons fascination when used in real life instances. 3mo
Librarybelle It seemed such an odd choice for a book, unless the pigeon societies were really popular in the 1930s and kids would easily recognize them. @DGRachel @lauraisntwilder @Ruthiella @BarkingMadRead @dabbe @mrp27 3mo
CogsOfEncouragement When my dad was a kid (born 1946) he had a neighbor that kept homing pigeons. That was in Southern California. So this didn‘t seem too far fetched to me. @DGRachel that‘s cool this book gave you a fun tidbit from your mom. I love that. 3mo
MariaW I knew about the pigeons because I have always been interested in history. In Egypt, where I lived for 5 years, those pigeons clubs are still pretty common for breeding. You can see pigeon lofts on almost every higher house and there are competitions as well. 3mo
kwmg40 I liked the use of homing pigeons in the plot. I recently watched a documentary called “Million Dollar Pigeons“ about pigeon racing and it was fascinating. 3mo

2. I don't know about you, but there were some real nail biter scenes! And, our #NNK count went up to 4/10 books!

This one is probably my favorite so far, given the fast-flowing storyline. What do you think of the adventures in this book? Thinking back to the three books Kurig wrote (books 8-10), is there one standout adventure/danger for you?

By the way...I'm staying away from cisterns! Haha! #NancyDrewBR

DGRachel This was definitely action packed, maybe too much so, and it wasn‘t my favorite. It was just so over the top. How does anyone follow a pigeon from a convertible? I‘m ready for a new ghost writer. 😂 3mo
Bookwormjillk @DGRachel I'm with you- it was almost too much for me. The pigeon and the airplane, it was just a lot. 3mo
lauraisntwilder Honestly, I think most of these have been over the top. Nothing, so far, has beat counterfeiters meeting in caves dressed like the KKK. The plane and the pigeon at the beginning was pretty silly, but the scene where Nancy is hiding under the bed felt realistic enough and pretty intense. And I kept worrying about that dog. Luckily, the criminals were mostly dumb or lazy! 3mo
See All 18 Comments
Ruthiella This one did have a lot of nail biting scenes. Can we consider the cistern (gross 🤢) a secret passage? 😂 I think when Nancy was running around the property was terrifying. All alone and not 100% certain of rescue. 3mo
BarkingMadRead So crazy, so many incidents! I was laughing because in another group I‘m in, someone mentioned Nancy being knocked out again 🤣 3mo
bookandbedandtea This was certainly action packed! I agree that these books are often over the top but I think that "child me" loved that about them. Always so much going on yet, despite, the scary bits, Nancy and her friends always seem to have so much fun! 3mo
dabbe I'm with you, @bookandbedandtea! That's what I loved about them as a kid--those pages kept getting turned! And I didn't mind suspending my disbelief one bit. The older, cynical me has a harder time with that, but I'm still enjoying these rereads all the same! 3mo
PurpleyPumpkin This one was definitely my favourite so far. I thought the author really did a good job of building the suspense leading up to the final reveal/solution. Have any of these books been realistic? I would say no but as @bookandbedandtea and @dabbe have said, these adventures appeal to the little girl in me. 3mo
AmandaBlaze I like the action-packed ones. I remember I would stay up past my bedtime reading these as a kid. Now I see why. 3mo
mrp27 I wasn‘t a big fan of this one, pigeons and planes were too much. (edited) 3mo
Librarybelle I guess I‘m holding onto these for nostalgia—as an adult, it seems the episodes are bizarre, but I can see younger readers being enthralled. I‘ll be thinking about the cistern for awhile, and I keep thinking about Nancy trapped on the boat that is sinking in a prior book! @DGRachel @Bookwormjillk @lauraisntwilder @Ruthiella @BarkingMadRead @bookandbedandtea @dabbe @PurpleyPumpkin @AmandaBlaze @mrp27 3mo
CogsOfEncouragement I loved Nancy fooling them so much - they think she is stuck in bed Nope! they think she is in the cistern Nope! 3mo
bookandbedandtea @AmandaBlaze Yes exactly! I read these over and over as a child and I think the action, despite it being "over the top" is why. 3mo
bookandbedandtea @Librarybelle I agree that there's a huge nostalgia element to these. I love them now because I have such fond memories of them from my childhood. It doesn't matter to me if the stories are "a bit much" from my adult perspective because they were intended to amuse young people, not adults. And they did amuse the heck out of me when I was a child. Mission accomplished. @PurpleyPumpkin @dabbe 3mo
dabbe @bookandbedandtea Agree 💯! 🤩 3mo
MariaW Compared to the last one, this one was pretty exciting. I could not put it down for the last reading hour. But I think the second plot with the expensive glass and Morgan was unnecessary. The story would have been exciting without it as well. 3mo
kwmg40 I too found this installment very exciting. The scene in the cistern was great! 3mo

1. This is Walter Karig‘s final of the three books he wrote for the syndicate, and he certainly leaves an impression! First, let's talk editions. While fairly similar, the 1966 edition condenses the story from 1933 and drops the “The“ from the title. In 1933, Helen plays a much larger role, and Bess and George are missing.

Which edition did you read? If the copyright page does not have a 1966 or later year listed, it's a 1933! #NancyDrewBR

Librarybelle Copyright can be confusing, and I know it's made a few of us wonder what edition we have! Chances are, if you're reading an ebook version, it is the 1966. Every copyright page lists the original copyright, plus any revision or copyright renewal years. For instance, if your copy shows 1933, 1966, and 1994, then you are reading a 1966 edition, with a copyright renewal by the publisher in 1994. Last time, there was a date in the 1950s ⬇ ⬇ ⬇ 3mo
Librarybelle ...this means that the edition was published in the 1950s, but since it's prior to the 1960s revisions, the text is the 1930s edition. I hope this helps! Like I said, really confusing! 3mo
DGRachel I had Bess & George, so I had the 1966 edition. ☺️ 3mo

Laughterhp It looks like I read the 1966 version! Definitely had Bess & George in it. 3mo
Bookwormjillk I had Bess & George on ebook so I think it was 1966. 3mo
lauraisntwilder I had the newer one. I'm tempted to seek out the old one for more Helen! 3mo
Ruthiella I had Helen and Bess and George. The 1966 versions had Helen‘s grandmother telling her “Your place is with your husband” , thereby limiting Helen‘s involvement/assistance!😬 3mo
BarkingMadRead 1966 for me 3mo
bookandbedandtea I read the 1966 edition and enjoyed getting Helen as well as Bess and George. 3mo

dabbe I really hadn't quite remembered the other ND's we've read (except for the dude ranch in AZ because I live here), but the minute I read about the carrier pigeon, I totally remembered this one!) Not that it should matter, but this one was written by a male ghostwriter, Walter Karig. Is that why this one seemed to have a lot more violence? 😱 3mo
Librarybelle @dabbe He wrote this one plus the prior two. I think you‘re right that the violence is much more prevalent in the stories he wrote. It‘ll be interesting to see next month‘s and what the ghostwriter for that one does for the story. 3mo

Yesterday afternoon‘s book & beer experience. I grab Nancy Drews whenever I see them in Little Free Libraries, and this was a fun one to revisit. Lots of peril for Nancy and plenty of chances for young readers to learn stuff about topics they might not otherwise be exposed to (like homing pigeons!). I stuck it in a different LFL on Daisy‘s morning walk so someone else can enjoy it.

The beer was okay. Slight medicinal flavour to the raspberry.

I read an extra 20 minutes at #HyggeHour last night so I could finish up Book 10 for #NancyDrewBR I‘m also going to use it a few hours early for the #AboutABook #ByMultipleAuthors prompt as the Nancy Drew series was written by many ghostwriters under the name Carolyn Keene. (Books 8-10 were written by Walter Karig).

But, back to the book, once I started it I remembered it instantly & the injured homing pigeon ⬇️

DebinHawaii …that kicks off the first mystery. I remember being fascinated as a child with Nancy‘s bird/homing pigeon 🐦knowledge! There‘s a 2nd mystery that *small spoilers ahead* of course is related. And even though Walter used chloroform in the last 2 books to knock Nancy out, our concussion watch is back on when Nancy is pushed down & knocked out on the driveway, making the #NancyNogginKnockout #NNK count now at 4/10. 🤕 ⬇️ (edited) 4mo
DebinHawaii Best lines in the book? "Here we arel" husky, blond Burt Eddleton exclaimed with a grin. "The world's greatest camp counselors!" He was George's special friend. (You really need to use air “ “ & a wink when you say “special friend!” ??) All in all I liked this one best of Walter‘s 3 books! Looking forward to the discussion on 8/15. 4mo

#Naturalitsy #HyggeHourReadathon

Spending my #HyggeHour on the couch with some. Nancy Drew for #NancyDrewBR & cinnamon bun puffcorn. I thought I bought 2 bags of the butter one but didn‘t. 😔It‘s actually pretty good, but I like the savory one better. Drinking nighttime herbal tea.

Mood is mellow & a little sad it‘s already Monday, but my week shouldn‘t be quite as busy as last week was even with a Tuesday trip to Hilo. 🙏🏼

Waiting in line for the biggest sale of the year at my local nursery reading Nancy Drew. Only Nancy would be picking prize winning flowers when a plane almost crashes and she has to nurse a messenger pigeon back to life. That‘s not a spoiler. It all happened on the first page 🤣

kspenmoll All that on page 1?! 4mo
Librarybelle Wow! Page 1! 4mo
Bookwormjillk @Librarybelle @kspenmoll it was on kindle so maybe 2 pages in print 🤷‍♀️ 4mo

#NancyDrewBR @Librarybelle

#10 does it again! Nancy's best quote: “I'll wire the International Federation of American Homing Pigeon Fanciers and give them the number stamped on the bird's leg ring.“ This is on PAGE 3! Written by a male ghostwriter, this story contains a lot of threats, voices in the dark, Nancy's head striking the pavement (#nancyheadknocks), and elderly people in danger at a supposed retirement home. This one did not disappoint!

Librarybelle Oh my! Sounds like we will have lots to discuss! I plan to start this late next week! 4mo

#Two4Tuesday
@TheSpineView

1. As someone who does #TLT (Three-List-Thursday), I make lists all the time. Of everything. Do I always do them? 😂😂😂
2. I think of Nancy Drew as the quintessential organizer who always has a plan/to-do list for herself and everyone around her.

Play? @TheBookHippie @Eggs @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks

TheSpineView Love #TLT ♥️ 4mo

Here‘s my attempt at the jack o lantern fruit bowls. This was harder than I thought it would be. It was hard to get all of the orange out of the peel without breaking it. 🎃👻📚 I listened to the tagged audiobook while making these. Attempted recipe - 20 points, team theme book - 10 points, post - 1 point =31 points #teamslaughter #scarathlon @Clwojick

Another one down for #nancydrewchallenge - number eight so far. Requires some suspension of disbelief (Nancy just happens to know the name of the pigeon fanciers association?!), but the girl detective gets the job done again.

The kid said early on, “it‘s NEVER a good idea to leave Nancy alone in a mystery!”

Crazeedi Nancy! I loved every one of them, I even remember many of the titles, like this one 6y
RadicalReader @ravenlee so happy of your success and happiness with homeschooling. I am looking forward to home schooling when I have children love being able to be besides them and be a part of the learning process 6y

Then an unseen man said, “You ought to be ashamed taking a couple of days getting to the boss‘s place and arriving there #lame at that! And why did you go to Drew‘s, you half-witted barnyard goose?” A door closed and all was silent #QuotsyFeb19 #NancyDrew

This was a welcome surprise in my over-wintering greenhouse. One random stalk with these gorgeous blooms that my GardenAnswers app identified as Delphinium aka Larkspur. I guess a bird dropped a seed in this pot of dirt last fall. 🌸☀️📚

My favorite #smartass character is Nancy Drew.
“Bell seated himself behind the desk, motioning for Nancy to stand opposite him. There was tense silence for a moment. Then Bell reached for a desk telephone.
"I am going to call the police, Miss Drew, and turn you over to them on a charge of trespassing, breaking, and entering with an attempt to steal."
"I wish you would,"Nancy replied."if it is possible over that dummy telephone.” #characters2017

As I first started to love reading I picked up a few Nancy Drew books and I was obsessed at around age 10! Last year I reread a few of them and they have some significant problems, in regards to race and class issues so I wouldn't want to pass them on to the kids in my life, but for 10 year old me they hold a special place in my heart as they helped move me onto a path of a lifetime reader! #lovedatage10 #17booklove

BookishMarginalia If I remember correctly, the newer reissues have been edited to deal with these issues and bring the series up to date with current attitudes. 8y
saresmoore @BookishMarginalia Yes, they have. And some of her most recently written books (The Nancy Drew Diaries) are favorites for my 8yo daughter. The legacy lives on! 8y
Christy2318 Nancy Drew is the first series I remember reading. I loved them and even now a good #girldetective story is among my favorite reads. I tried to read Nancy again not too long ago and it did not have the magic I remembered. 8y

AlaMich I've got a box full of the old yellow hardcovers in my basement. I remember being so excited to go to the bookstore when a new one came out. ❤️ Nancy! 8y
Suzze My sister and I had a complete set of the blue covered ones. They were both of our favorites! 8y
Eliza-beta I loved Nancy Drew. But agreed - I don't think they would read well for the adult me 8y
EllieDottie @BookishMarginalia @saresmoore I'm so glad! I need to read on of the new ones!!! 8y
EllieDottie @Christy2318 almost nothing has the same magic! But she's still pretty cool! 8y
