Witch's Daughter
Witch's Daughter | Paula Brackston
THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERAn enthralling tale of modern witch Bess Hawksmith, a fiercely independent woman desperate to escape her cursed history who must confront the evil which has haunted her for centuries My name is Elizabeth Anne Hawksmith, and my age is three hundred and eighty-four years. If you will listen, I will tell you a tale of witches. A tale of magic and love and loss. A story of how simple ignorance breeds fear, and how deadly that fear can be. Let me tell you what it means to be a witch. In the spring of 1628, the Witchfinder of Wessex finds himself a true Witch. As Bess Hawksmith watches her mother swing from the Hanging Tree she knows that only one man can save her from the same fate: the Warlock Gideon Masters. Secluded at his cottage, Gideon instructs Bess, awakening formidable powers she didn't know she had. She couldn't have foreseen that even now, centuries later, he would be hunting her across time, determined to claim payment for saving her life.In present-day England, Elizabeth has built a quiet life. She has spent the centuries in solitude, moving from place to place, surviving plagues, wars, and the heartbreak that comes with immortality. Her loneliness comes to an abrupt end when she is befriended by a teenage girl called Tegan. Against her better judgment, Elizabeth opens her heart to Tegan and begins teaching her the ways of the Hedge Witch. But will she be able to stand against Gideon who will stop at nothing to reclaim her soul in order to protect the girl who has become the daughter she never had?Praise for The Witch's Daughter"Brackston's first novel offers well-crafted characters in an absorbing plot and an altogether delicious blend of historical fiction and fantasy." --Booklist"This pleasantly romantic historical fantasy debut flips lightly between the past experiences of ageless witch Elizabeth Anne Hawksmith and her present-day life in Matravers, England... Bess's adventures are fascinating." --Publishers Weekly"

My mom gave me this book years ago and it‘s been sitting on my shelf ever since. Now she wants me to send it to my sister so she can read both books, so I decided to read it first. After 50-some pages I‘m throwing in the towel. Cliched, predictable, and I can‘t connect with the characters, so off it goes to sister. Now I‘m grumpy and can‘t decide what to read next.

TheBookKeepers Mary‘s Monster is a fantastic October read. And may be a good pallet cleanser book for you 🖤 2mo
ulrichyumiodd I was not a fan of that book either. I rated it “pick”, but it was closer to “so-so”. I never felt the need to read another book by the same author. 2mo

This is a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ with some caveats. I enjoyed the story, but have to highlight some problematic content.

The author identifies the main character as Wiccan, a real religion, in the modern day chapters, but then throws every witch cliche and stereotype at the reader. The tone and blending of fantasy under the name of Wiccan (and weird Satanic elements) highlighted how little the author researched Wicca.

#pop19 #articleofclothingoncover

rsteve388 Grrr as a pagan this is very frustrating. Damn do your research like hiw hard is it?! Wicca is a real faith and deserves the same respect you give to Christianity. 3mo
rsteve388 Not you specfically the Author 3mo
sprainedbrain Oh, that‘s annoying... it‘s not like this is a difficult topic to look in to. 3mo
See All 11 Comments
julesG Oh no, another book with too little research by Brackston?! 3mo
4thhouseontheleft @rsteve388 it‘s a weird set up, she should have left Wicca out of it completely and just kept it a fantasy witch story. While she did incorporate some hedge witchcraft into the story nicely, there were other aspects really stereotyped. I‘m agnostic, but our home blends Judaism (hubby‘s religion) and pagan beliefs into our own unique version of spirituality. 3mo
4thhouseontheleft @julesG So, this is a common theme with her books? 😕 3mo
julesG I read the new time travel series book 1 and part of book 2. Was annoyed at the historical inaccuracies and blatant mistakes a time traveller to a defined point in time would not make. 3mo
4thhouseontheleft @sprainedbrain It is! And I just realized I hit the wrong button last night, this is a so-so, not a pick. Oops! 3mo
4thhouseontheleft @julesG I'll probably read the sequel to this one during #screamathon since it does get better reviews, but I'm not jumping to pick up any of her other books at the moment. 3mo
Caroline2 Oh no how disappointing! Hmm, I may bail on this one...she‘s got one more chance with me tonight...! 🤨 2mo
4thhouseontheleft @Caroline2 The sequel gets better reviews, so I‘m willing to give it a try. 2mo

OMG. So, I'd been wanting to read this for awhile, and picked it up out of impulse yesterday. It grabbed me so hard I was nearly late back from lunch hour. Read until after midnight last night, racing through the pages. Not quite finished, but already know it's one of those that's going to linger with me long after I'm done.

I am SO frustrated that after centuries of being stalked and manipulated by Gideon, Bess wasn't strong enough to defeat him, even with her sisters. In real life, abusers get away with that sort of thing all the time, but I read fantasy fiction for catharsis. This ending let me down.
Also, it was great to see women using their power to heal, but does it always have to come from a man? I have some unanswered questions about how that works. Oh well.

jpmcwisemorgan Hmmm it‘s a book that I‘ve marked as one I might like to read. Should I reconsider? 8mo
ShyBookOwl @jpmcwisemorgan I try not to tell ppl what they will or won't enjoy, so I'll say this: if you are looking for pretty and witchy atmospheric prose, go for it. If you want something powerful and/or feminist, proceed with caution. Hope that helps! 8mo

😫!! I really loved the first half of this book, but the second half let me down. It begins as a haunting epic but just when things should ramp up... they screech to a halt for one last flashback. 100 pages of an unecessary storyline. Sigh. And that ending... I'll need a spoiler post to vent.
On a positive note, the writing was beautiful and, if you like witchy things, it's a good October read.

Nearly halfway through and LOVING it. But, the book has so many negative reviews that I'm afraid it's going to take an unexpected turn for the worst 😕. I have no idea what people have against this book... hoping I continue to enjoy it 🤞

aquariusnat When I read it , I was expecting a historical fiction . But it quickly turns into a fantasy/thriller , which is not really my thing . 9mo
ShyBookOwl @aquariusnat Hmm.. that's good to know. I went in for the fantasy thriller aspect, the historical bits being a bonus for me... so maybe it'll be ok 😊 9mo
ulrichyumiodd I liked the book, but the villain felt very flat to me. Hopefully you‘ll continue to enjoy it! 9mo

Pick/So-so.

Elizabeth spent her life running away from Gideon, the man who made her a powerful, immortal witch. When she meets Tegan, a teen eager to connect and to learn witchcraft, she hopes to finally find some respite from that never-ending chase.

A beautiful writing style and an often heartbreaking story. I could predict some revelations, but the book as a whole was enjoyable. My main complaint: I found Gideon to be a very flat villain.

B/t a pick &so-so! I enjoyed it, yet felt indifferent during parts. The MC has eternal life & constantly evading her foe. The story bounces b/t present day 2007, &other lives that she‘s led in the past. I love the historical aspects &diff. time periods. But wasnt feeling the present day story/characters,& felt like many of the answers regarding her craft were left unaddressed. A fun Halloween read, but not a fav. #pccgiveaway @TheReadingMermaid
