The Witch's Daughter
The Witch's Daughter | Paula Brackston
My name is Elizabeth Anne Hawksmith, and my age is three hundred and eighty-four years. Each new settlement asks for a new journal, and so this Book of Shadows begins... In the spring of 1628, the Witchfinder of Wessex finds himself a true Witch. As Bess Hawksmith watches her mother swing from the Hanging Tree she knows that only one man can save her from the same fate at the hands of the panicked mob: the Warlock Gideon Masters, and his Book of Shadows. Secluded at his cottage in the woods, Gideon instructs Bess in the Craft, awakening formidable powers she didn't know she had and making her immortal. She couldn't have foreseen that even now, centuries later, he would be hunting her across time, determined to claim payment for saving her life. In present-day England, Elizabeth has built a quiet life for herself, tending her garden and selling herbs and oils at the local farmers' market. But her solitude abruptly ends when a teenage girl called Tegan starts hanging around. Against her better judgment, Elizabeth begins teaching Tegan the ways of the Hedge Witch, in the process awakening memories--and demons--long thought forgotten. Part historical romance, part modern fantasy, The Witch's Daughter is a fresh, compelling take on the magical, yet dangerous world of Witches. Readers will long remember the fiercely independent heroine who survives plagues, wars, and the heartbreak that comes with immortality to remain true to herself, and protect the protg she comes to love.

I thought this book was fascinating. Elizabeth, a 384 yr old hedge witch, has just moved to her new home and is trying to have a quiet life when Tegan appears. Elizabeth sees Tegan as a possible apprentice and begins telling her the long story of her life while teaching her the craft.

I found the book really slow paced and overly detailed with the back story, but did like the story between Elizabeth and Tegan and how it evolved. The ending was way too predictable, and I‘m not sure if I‘ll read the second book, or not. Maybe if I don‘t have anything else to read.

What a perfect book for the weekend of Halloween!! While there were some echoes for Addie LaRue and her immortal (dark and twisted) love tale across centuries, The Witch‘s Daughter holds its own and delves into witchcraft. I listened to this on audible and it was a treat for my ears. Book #70 in 2022

I didn‘t hate some of the backstory. I felt like it was paced weird or unevenly. Was not a fan of the ending. Felt like this is similar to other books I‘ve read of the author. I don‘t think I‘ll read the second book. I didn‘t hate the book but definitely just not impressed. I don‘t quite like or hate the relationships but. 🤷🏼‍♀️

This one has been on my mental TBR list, but since I don't own it or have the arc, I'm counting it as an Impulse read for this year. It's a bit slow, but I always love the historical aspect of Brackston's books, so it didn't bother me. Follows a 300+ year old witch as she flees from the warlock who wants to claim her, and not in a sexy way. #Readin22 #Audiobook #Impulse #Pantone2022

This was a little slow, but good. It was almost like three or four books in one, since it told several stories of one witches life through the centuries. I very much enjoyed the writing style. Ok, confession time. My #cozyswap package didn‘t have a screen name on it so I NEVER put two and two together. The invitation to the paranormal cozy #LMPBC group was to me out of no where (but totally appreciated). And now only after reading the note inside do I get it. @Littlewolf1 you did an amazing job for your first swap. I didn‘t want to open it until I mailed off my books. 👇🏻

LibrarianRyan You really get someone who is perpetually cold. The blanket, the fuzzy socks and the only type of chocolate I like is hot coco and it‘s my favorite brand!!!!! Plus earmuffs and a hot coco cup. Yummmm. And warm. I opted everything at work and I think that is where it will stay foe it‘s right at my fingertips and ready to use. Love it all. This is the first in a series. I felt like the story ran on too long. I know, as an avid, I'm not supposed to say things like that. However it seemed to drag on and I found myself hoping for the end. It was a detailed story, with likable characters but it was obvious as well. OR maybe I'm being overly critical and this is a brilliant start to the trilogy. You decide!

📖📚 Happy Reading! 📚📖

My mom gave me this book years ago and it‘s been sitting on my shelf ever since. Now she wants me to send it to my sister so she can read both books, so I decided to read it first. After 50-some pages I‘m throwing in the towel. Cliched, predictable, and I can‘t connect with the characters, so off it goes to sister. Now I‘m grumpy and can‘t decide what to read next.

TheBookKeepers Mary‘s Monster is a fantastic October read. And may be a good pallet cleanser book for you 🖤 5y

This is a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ with some caveats. I enjoyed the story, but have to highlight some problematic content.

The author identifies the main character as Wiccan, a real religion, in the modern day chapters, but then throws every witch cliche and stereotype at the reader. The tone and blending of fantasy under the name of Wiccan (and weird Satanic elements) highlighted how little the author researched Wicca.

#pop19 #articleofclothingoncover

rsteve388 Grrr as a pagan this is very frustrating. Damn do your research like hiw hard is it?! Wicca is a real faith and deserves the same respect you give to Christianity. 5y
rsteve388 Not you specfically the Author 5y
sprainedbrain Oh, that‘s annoying... it‘s not like this is a difficult topic to look in to. 5y
See All 11 Comments
julesG Oh no, another book with too little research by Brackston?! 5y
alisiakae @rsteve388 it‘s a weird set up, she should have left Wicca out of it completely and just kept it a fantasy witch story. While she did incorporate some hedge witchcraft into the story nicely, there were other aspects really stereotyped. I‘m agnostic, but our home blends Judaism (hubby‘s religion) and pagan beliefs into our own unique version of spirituality. 5y
alisiakae @julesG So, this is a common theme with her books? 😕 5y
julesG I read the new time travel series book 1 and part of book 2. Was annoyed at the historical inaccuracies and blatant mistakes a time traveller to a defined point in time would not make. 5y
alisiakae @sprainedbrain It is! And I just realized I hit the wrong button last night, this is a so-so, not a pick. Oops! 5y
alisiakae @julesG I'll probably read the sequel to this one during #screamathon since it does get better reviews, but I'm not jumping to pick up any of her other books at the moment. 5y
Caroline2 Oh no how disappointing! Hmm, I may bail on this one...she‘s got one more chance with me tonight...! 🤨 5y

I am SO frustrated that after centuries of being stalked and manipulated by Gideon, Bess wasn't strong enough to defeat him, even with her sisters. In real life, abusers get away with that sort of thing all the time, but I read fantasy fiction for catharsis. This ending let me down.
Also, it was great to see women using their power to heal, but does it always have to come from a man? I have some unanswered questions about how that works. Oh well.

jpmcwisemorgan Hmmm it‘s a book that I‘ve marked as one I might like to read. Should I reconsider? 6y
ShyBookOwl @jpmcwisemorgan I try not to tell ppl what they will or won't enjoy, so I'll say this: if you are looking for pretty and witchy atmospheric prose, go for it. If you want something powerful and/or feminist, proceed with caution. Hope that helps! 6y

😫!! I really loved the first half of this book, but the second half let me down. It begins as a haunting epic but just when things should ramp up... they screech to a halt for one last flashback. 100 pages of an unecessary storyline. Sigh. And that ending... I'll need a spoiler post to vent.
On a positive note, the writing was beautiful and, if you like witchy things, it's a good October read.

Pick/So-so.

Elizabeth spent her life running away from Gideon, the man who made her a powerful, immortal witch. When she meets Tegan, a teen eager to connect and to learn witchcraft, she hopes to finally find some respite from that never-ending chase.

A beautiful writing style and an often heartbreaking story. I could predict some revelations, but the book as a whole was enjoyable. My main complaint: I found Gideon to be a very flat villain.
