Haroun and the Sea of Stories
Haroun and the Sea of Stories | Salman Rushdie
Discover Haroun and the Sea of Stories, Salman Rushdie s classic fantasy novel Set in an exotic Eastern landscape peopled by magicians and fantastic talking animals, Salman Rushdie's classic children's novel Haroun and the Sea of Stories inhabits the same imaginative space as The Lord of the Rings, The Alchemist, and The Wizard of Oz. In this captivating work of fantasy from the author of Midnight s Children and The Enchantress of Florence, Haroun sets out on an adventure to restore the poisoned source of the sea of stories. On the way, he encounters many foes, all intent on draining the sea of all its storytelling powers. Though there is darkness and silence at the center of Chup, most of "Haroun and the Sea of Stories" is full of comic energy and lively verbal invention. . . .Though [the book] is sure to be enjoyed by children, it also contains amusements for adults. -- "The New York Times""

My first read by Salman Rushdie won't be my last. I went in soft for #AuthoraMonth and did not come away disappointed. Children's story be damned; I loved it for reminding me of how important stories are in our lives. It made me feel triumphant for teaching my students about the archetypal story pattern of all our lives: The Hero's Quest and that every story is the same story told in infinite variations. Thank you, Mr. Rushdie.

I have had *I am the Walrus* stuck in my head since starting the tagged book!
I really hope that we get to meet this mysterious character!
Can't imagine how much wackier this story can get though lol.

Last month's reading wrap up.
I am dubbing February Month of the Manga. Because I read A LOT of it lol. 20 books and more than half were manga. I fell into a rabbit hole on Manganato and now I wish I had discovered all this 10+ years ago. I would be so much more ahead. 😩
Favorite read was, The Shining, followed up with Haguya Kime (Moon Princess). The androgynous representation in Haguya Kime was *chefs kiss* exquisite.

I wouldn‘t really recommend it much, probably to a kid yes, it does open up the imagination a bit. The prose is simple, the theme is nice, but the ending was rushed.

5* amazing book! A beautiful, dreamy, bizarre work honouring storytelling and imagination. It reminded me a lot of Alice in Wonderland in terms of how surreal it was, original and refreshing and not constrained by any logic at all, though the story never failed to make sense. The appendix on how the words were derived from Hindustani words and Indian cultural references was 💯💯💯 too

TooFoo Sounds interesting. I‘ll have to check it out! 😊👍 5y

Final #BFC #BFCr4 Check-in! Can't believe we're done already! When's the next round?? 😁 I ran 4/4 times this week 🏃‍♀️💪 And finished my 9/9 books with the tagged #audiobook 📚🎧 It's been a good week and a good round! Thanks @wanderinglynn and my #RunningonReading team @BarbaraJean @Catlover23 @hermyknee ❤️🎉 #BookFitnessChallenge

wanderinglynn Way to go! 🙌🏻 If we do a round 5, it‘ll probably be after the new year. I figure everyone will be too busy during the holidays. But if people want to do a round through the holidays, I‘m game. 5y
Caterina @wanderinglynn Thanks! 😊 Whatever works best for you works for me! I would do a round during the holidays if there was one (especially since I'm signed up for a 10K on December 21), or wait until the new year if that's when you do the next round! 👍 So appreciate all the work you do to make BFC so great ❤️❤️❤️ 5y

I got in under the wire with my 24 hours of reading! Quick little morning #audiorun before getting ready to go to church! It was dim and foggy and cold outside, so I decided on the treadmill, especially since I still have a cough from my cold. Loving this audiobook still! 😍 15.5 hours for the #MrBook1inaMillion #readathon.

Went for an evening #audiorun on the treadmill (since it was already dark outside) and switched to some fiction for the first time in a week or so. This book is the perfect escape from all the academics! And it was so nice to run after having a bad cold all week. 💕💪🏃‍♀️😊

Clwojick 🙌🏻🙌🏻 I wish I had your dedication... and lung capacity. 😅 I struggle to run for 5 minutes. 5y
Caterina @Clwojick Thanks!! ❤️ It took me a long time to work up to running due in part to asthma but also fibromyalgia and migraines, but now it doesn't feel hard to maintain because I love it so much! 😊 When I first started I ran for 6 minutes total, with walk breaks after each minute. 😂 5y
Clwojick That‘s 💯 me right now! 😂 I‘m hoping to get a good treadmill whenever we buy a house, but it‘s just not conveniently our 2b apartment 5y

Caterina @Clwojick You can do it!! ❤️😊 I just started using the treadmill that's in the fitness center of my apartment building when the air was too smoky from the Kincade fire to run outside, but I think I'll be using it more as it gets darker and more rainy this winter. I adore outdoor running though, and it was perfect for my months of run/walking! ❤️ 5y
marleed I fell on a treadmill on the first day of BFCr1 - burned a knee, bruised my back, and sprained my shoulder. And let‘s not even talk about my dignity- it was not a graceful fall! I‘m so afraid to get back on a treadmill that last week I finally cancelled my gym membership! 5y
Caterina @marleed Oh no!! That's what I've been terrified all like 5 times I've run on a treadmill so far. 😂😱 I'm so sorry that happened to you! I would definitely not get back on a treadmill either! 5y

Great stress-relieving morning #audiorun! Love looking at the murals on the Ohlone Greenway. My last half mile was uphill and felt pretty challenging, but I ran by an unhoused man with whom I had exchanged smiles and waves at the beginning of my run, and he cheered me on enthusiasticly. He made me feel like I was running a race and near the finish line! I got that end-of-race burst of energy, and my last half mile ended up being my fastest. 😊

I grabbed today‘s Audible Daily Deal because I wanted something short that I might be able to finish at work today and I‘m pleasantly surprised by how much fun this is. The narrator is great and the story is very entertaining. It almost makes being at work on New Year‘s Eve tolerable. Almost.

Reading this as an adult was difficult. The various names that sounded similar to one another and the plot jumping around a bit made me struggle to navigate my way through this book. For children, this would be the perfect read. The wacky names of people and places, elements of magic, and the fun characters would be sure to keep a child interested. Not my favorite but still a good story.

This was recommended by a friend and I loved it! Very Arabian Night-esque with lots of humour, satire and #magic thrown in. Rushdie couldn't have given his son a better gift.
It's a story about a story, hence recommended for Littens who write.

I'm recycling an old #rockinmay post courtesy of @DivineDiana for #catsinthecradle. Rushdie wrote this one for his son while in hiding during the fatwa, so it seems to fit. And SR and the singer of today's tune have some bad blood between them so it works on that less heartwarming level if that's your preference. @Cinfhen

This book has a literary connection to the story of Aladdin because of the magical oil lamp that contains the Genie. Also connected by the magic carpet to Butt the Hoopoe because that is how both the ‘hero‘ characters are transported.#rockinmay #magiccarpetride

Another great story from Salman Rushdie! This one is silly, fun, and full of puns. Definitely could be read in a sitting if you've got the time, and it will probably remind you of Alice in Wonderland... If she were transplanted to the heart of India.
