Jane Austen Project
Jane Austen Project | Kathleen A Flynn
Perfect for fans of Jane Austen, this engrossing debut novel offers an unusual twist on the legacy of one of the world's most celebrated and beloved authors: two researchers from the future are sent back in time to meet Jane and recover a suspected unpublished novel.London, 1815: Two travelers Rachel Katzman and Liam Finucane arrive in a field in rural England, disheveled and weighed down with hidden money. Turned away at a nearby inn, they are forced to travel by coach all night to London. They are not what they seem, but rather colleagues who have come back in time from a technologically advanced future, posing as wealthy West Indies planters a doctor and his spinster sister. While Rachel and Liam aren t the first team from the future to go back, their mission is by far the most audacious: meet, befriend, and steal from Jane Austen herself.Carefully selected and rigorously trained by The Royal Institute for Special Topics in Physics, disaster-relief doctor Rachel and actor-turned-scholar Liam have little in common besides the extraordinary circumstances they find themselves in. Circumstances that call for Rachel to stifle her independent nature and let Liam take the lead as they infiltrate Austen s circle via her favorite brother, Henry. But diagnosing Jane s fatal illness and obtaining an unpublished novel hinted at in her letters pose enough of a challenge without the continuous convolutions of living a lie. While her friendship with Jane deepens and her relationship with Liam grows complicated, Rachel fights to reconcile the woman she is with the proper lady nineteenth-century society expects her to be. As their portal to the future prepares to close, Rachel and Liam struggle with their directive to leave history intact and exactly as they found it however heartbreaking that may prove."

I enjoyed a good 3/4 of this, which I think will suit fans of Connie Willis - there are some obvious parallels with her time-traveling historian novels.

I don't know why the ending fell a little flat for me. I liked the examination of time travel consequences, but maybe it just lacked depth, and the main characters lacked a little curiosity.

A good fit for the 2 time periods prompt. @BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen @alisiakae

I really wanted to love this novel - how cool would it be to turn travel and meet Jane Austen!! - but it just was not for me. I did not really care for the MC, and that probably has some to do with my overall so-so feeling of the book. Henry‘s portrayal in the novel also seemed a bit callous - I understand he liked a good time, but it seemed a bit too much. Who knows, though??? Finally took the time to finish this for #PemberLittens .

This one was a surprise, I enjoyed it. It has low rating but for me was interesting. The end maybe was cheesy but I am happy how it ended. I liked the idea to go back in time. I don‘t expected less if you go back in time with this knowledge, technology and experiences. It would be so difficult to control yourself, to follow rules and traditions of that time knowing what would happen. I liked that in their return, things were altered.3.5⭐️

I needed some time to think about this review. Overall I enjoyed the premise, even though the characters got on my nerves. But I think the ending ultimately soured my impression. I wanted more explanation about the future and it all just seemed rushed. I'm glad I read this with the #pemberlittens though, it was enjoyable to share the experience with everyone. Thanks @StayCurious for hosting

Thank you #permberlittens for the read-a-long. It was a clever idea, but I found the overall pace very slow. An intriguing ending that I think was the right one, some of the choices made by the characters did have me sighing in frustration.

Also, I keep comparing Rachel to Irene from The Invisible Library series. Unfavourably.

This book had what I thought was a very interesting premise. Rachel and Liam travel back to meet Jane Austen and recover a manuscript of The Watsons as well as some letters between Jane and her sister. It seems like a good idea, but I never really got attached to any of the characters and it sort of felt like the author made it up as she went along. ⭐️⭐️⭐️pick for the idea.

Cinfhen Seems to be the consensus 🫶🏼 #MoreMehThanYeah 2y

A book involving both time travel and Jane Austen? Sounded fascinating, but I found the storyline to be as disconnected as the concept. The plot moved in strange directions. And I was surprised to find that I disliked some of the Austen family members, which was disappointing. I also disliked many of the choices the main characters made. #PemberLittens @StayCurious #Booked2023 @Cinfhen @alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage #UKRoadTrip @jenniferw88

Cinfhen It does sound like it had potential too bad it missed it‘s mark ☹️ 2y

So much potential here! The ending was quite unsatisfying and felt unfinished to me. It is in need of a good epilogue. I spent nearly 400 pages invested in these two MCs, only to not be given a proper “This is how it went afterwards….”!?!?! Just seems unfair to the readers. But that is just my humble opinion. #Pemberlittens #LitsyLoveReads

#Pemberlittens Ch.20: I‘m left a bit in limbo - half satisfied and half unsatisfied at this ending. I feel sad that they‘ve lost where they came from - but on the other hand maybe their world wasn‘t so great. I wish we had learned more about it. I wish there had been an epilogue - set a few years later to tell us how they are doing living their alt-lives. 👇

StayCurious There were a few lines about grandchildren but that‘s it. I don‘t know. Overall I enjoyed the book and the premise but was never overly attached to the characters. Still, I like an ending that is a bit more straight forward. 2y
See All 13 Comments
IndoorDame I also found it unsatisfying that we never really learned about their world! I hadn‘t figured out an ending I was particularly rooting for, so I also had the feeling of ‘I guess the way it wrapped up is okay…‘ 2y
MoonWitch94 I kept waiting for more details of their world & was so unsatisfied. It feels unfinished to me. I totally agree that an epilogue several years later was necessary. 2y
vonnie862 Same. I was dissatisfied with the ending and i wanted to know more about their world. However, I'm glad Liam was not killed but I did not like him being married in his new world. I feel bad for his wife as Liam and Rachel talk about their future without really caring about her. Also, I had mixed feelings about Jane Austen living longer. It would have been cool that she lived longer but she would not have the same legacy if she did. 2y
vonnie862 And...I was really interested on the topic of how changing the past affects people's memories. I would have liked to have read more of this instead of Rachel fantasizing in how together into Liam's pants. 2y
CoffeeNBooks I'm not sure how this could have wrapped up and ended in a way that would seem complete. There were parts of this book I liked, but parts that didn't seem to make sense. It's almost like this was a rough draft that hadn't been edited well. I'm glad I read it, though, if that makes sense. 2y
julieclair I kind of wish they had stayed in 1815 (and that Liam had recovered, of course.) Coming back seemed so dissatisfying to both of them. And all the talk about changing the past and how it affected the future made my brain hurt. I couldn't make sense of it. 2y
julieclair I do think she left the door open for a sequel. She mentioned that people were wanting to learn more about the Brontes... 2y
Bklover I agree with all of you. Oh, though I thought the “oh, I forgot - now there weren‘t any Nazis “ was a bit of a stretch. 2y
Chrissyreadit I also think I would have liked them staying in the past. It‘s interesting that the way to return still worked when they were going to a different future. I think the author told a good story- I easily engaged- even when I did not love the characters. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I was a bit perplexed at how casual everyone was about just getting new pasts, which lead to new futures, and now some people have to get their memories altered, but apparently some people's memories just automatically get altered... or something... I found all those explanations to be rather weak and dissatisfying. If the past is constantly changing the present, how does anyone know that the past is being changed? 2y

Rachel & Liam are part of a mission to go back in time to 1815 to befriend Jane Austen: to recover lost letters between Jane and her sister Cassandra, & to get the manuscript of her novel The Watsons. They have to be very careful not to be found out as not actually being who they say they are, and they have to be careful to not change anything that would alter history.

This was between a pick and a so-so, but the premise was really interesting.

Sophronisba Just came here to say that I will always be a little annoyed with Cassandra Austen for burning all those letters. 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.19: Rachel is reunited with Liam and all seems to be well. Except that Liam proposes that they stay in that time - considering they‘ve altered history enough that they don‘t know what they will be returning too, it‘s not a terrible idea. He wants to marry. He admits to loving Rachel for a long time. But will she admit her feelings for him? Yes - after nursing him through typhus (that he got from lice - gross) 👇

StayCurious I will say, I‘m still not that invested in their romance but if Liam dies, that will be such a crap ending. 2y
See All 11 Comments
IndoorDame I have the feeling that Rachel is right that this romance only works if they stay in the past. Not sure what ending I‘m rooting for here… 2y
vonnie862 @StayCurious oh my gosh! My Thoughts exactly! I don't care about their relationship but killing him off would no be satisfactory. At this point, I'm eager to see how it ends. 2y
julieclair I, too, am not sure how I want this to end. But I for sure don‘t want it to be with Liam dying. That might justify a #ThrowTheBook moment. 😂 2y
Bklover Well if Liam has loved Rachel all along, he‘s certainly hidden it well. Or maybe just Rachel doesn‘t hide her feelings well (or her hormones). 2y

I did not love this book- there were plot lines that were very problematic for me- and had everything to do with the two main characters and how they were written than the story writing itself. But I‘m really glad I read this with #pemberlittens and am very appreciative to @StayCurious for hosting.

Chrissyreadit I think if they had “accidentally gone back at the “beginning” of preparing or had not been the Teo meant to go back but were testing equipment or something that explained how woefully inept they were at the mission I would have felt a little better- although the cheating part would still irritate me. 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.18 well “the 💩 hath hitteth the fan-eth”- to borrow a quote from 10 Things I Hate About You. In a world where your connections mean everything, to be found out as fraudulent liars - or even to have doubts cast on your honour - can collapse everything you‘ve spent time building 👇

StayCurious Liam is desperate to get away - like panicky which I found unattractive. And he leaves Rachel! And narrowly avoids a duel with Henry. But at least Rachel gets to say goodbye to Jane, and she gets a copy of the Watsons - if she can get back, mission accomplished. 2y

peanutnine Wow this chapter was a mess! You'd think, again, that they would have come up with a plan if they were found out by Edward, especially since they knew it was coming 🙄 I'm also very curious as to what the state of their world is going to be if they get back, since Jane may live longer now if this blood letting works to improve her health 🤔 2y
vonnie862 @peanutnine I agree. This chapter was a mess! Liam panicked while Rachel acted too calm. I almost wanted to shake her because she didn't react to the seriousness of the situation but instead kept having sexual thoughts of Liam. 2y
vonnie862 You know, maybe Rachel was supposed to go to the past? She has The Watsons now which explains why it's missing in the future. 2y
IndoorDame @peanutnine now that you mention the question about what will happen if Jane lives longer, I‘m shocked Rachel doesn‘t have express instructions not to interfere and cure her even if she does find out what‘s wrong. There seem to be way too many holes in this mission plan! 2y
peanutnine @vonnie862 I've thought this too. It might also explain why her letters to Cassandra are burnt, because Jane didn't want anyone in the future reading them 2y
julieclair @peanutnine @indoordame Calling it a mission “plan” is a stretch. It‘s more like a “wishful rough sketch”. 😂 2y
IndoorDame @julieclair 🤣🤣🤣 2y
peanutnine @julieclair 🤣🤣💯 2y
StayCurious @IndoorDame @julieclair @peanutnine but…they spent time in Preparation- with a capital p 😝 2y
CoffeeNBooks This chapter... 🙄 What were Rachel and Liam thinking?! What was Liam thinking, fighting with Henry, leaving Rachel behind?! What are they going to do until they can get back to the future? 2y
julieclair #PreparationwithacapitalP 😂😂👍 @StayCurious But really, I think they were fairly well Prepared to blend in once they arrived in 1815, but they were woefully unPrepared to actually carry out their mission. 2y
Bklover @peanutnine @vonnie862 I agree! What a disaster. Rachel is driving me crazy- she needs to get her head in the game. I think she‘s forgotten they had a game plan! 2y
TheAromaofBooks I was SO confused by Liam's weird panic. And they KNEW Edward had sent the letter - what did they THINK was going to happen!?!?!? 2y
Chrissyreadit @julieclair I agree- the unevenness is annoying in the story. 2y
Chrissyreadit @CoffeeNBooks Right??? Like haphazard- I would have thought there would be contingencies for contingencies. 2y
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks I agree about Liam‘s panic. It seemed so out of character for him. 2y
rubyslippersreads @TheAromaofBooks I never could figure out what Liam was so panicked about. What did I miss? 2y
TheAromaofBooks @rubyslippersreads - I guess just that their cover was blown?? That's what I mean, his panic seemed disproportionate to what was happening/it felt like they really should have made a contingency plan because they KNEW Edward was checking on their backstory! Instead, they just ignored it and then freaked out when the letter arrived! 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.17: so Liam must have a better way of spinning a tale because Jane takes his word and seems totally fine with it. When Rachel alludes to Jane‘s early death, Jane wants to go back with them. I wonder how that would go over and if it‘s even possible. I also wonder if Jane has too much iron in her blood. I think that‘s one reason bleeding her might help.

BarkingMadRead 🤣🤣🤣🤣 2y
See All 11 Comments
Bklover I though about the too much iron in her blood too. Jane‘s reaction was just plain weird. Oh, and I love your post!❤️❤️ 2y
IndoorDame @StayCurious @Bklover I wondered about iron too. My nonexistent medical knowledge couldn‘t come up with another legit reason for bleeding her. And yes, Jane‘s reaction was SO odd. I get that she‘s not the typical woman of any age, but unless this non-response is some manifestation of her illness I don‘t get it. 2y
vonnie862 The memes! 😂 2y
vonnie862 I had no idea that blood letting may help if one has too much iron. So maybe you ladies are right. I'm more stunned at Jane's calm reaction towards Liam and Rachel. The chapter ends with a person on horseback quickly arriving with a letter. Have Liam and Rachel been found out? 2y
CoffeeNBooks The meme! 😆 I had no idea why blood letting might be necessary. I definitely didn't expect Jane to be so calm in response to Liam & Rachel's story. I'm assuming the person on horseback has the news that Rachel & Liam aren't who they say they are- I think this could go one of two ways. Either it's going to be really bad, or Jane is going to figure out a way to spin a story that keeps them out of trouble. 2y
julieclair This book is all over the place. Jane‘s nonchalant reaction seems so out of character for her. And she wants to go to the future? Now that would be something! Great memes… so clever! 😀 2y
Chrissyreadit I love your memes- and full disclosure- read ahead and finished cause due back at library- but this part of the book irritated me- I feel like for very smart trained people, they are acting rather selfishly and irresponsibly. 2y

Okay, I couldn't resist and had to finish this one yesterday!! I had SUCH mixed feelings about this book! I loved the concept and actually felt like it was executed fairly well. But I never liked Rachel and actually disliked her more as the book went on, especially as her relationship with Liam (which I never believed; their chemistry level was in the negative numbers) developed and they both acted like the fact that Liam was engaged was not ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) important at all. The ending felt a little rushed, and while I thought it made sense, it just made me dislike Rachel and Liam even more, so there's that. In the end, I actually enjoyed the story itself and felt like the Austens were portrayed fairly well, but the way Rachel and Liam decided that having sex was more important than their actual mission really frustrated me. However... a fun one to discuss with the #PemberLittens !! 2y

TheAromaofBooks @rubyslippersread - I am glad that they decided not to have their memories changed. #Pemberlittens Ch.16: so Jane is quite Ill- to the point where Rachel worries she‘ll die earlier than she should. As she nurses Jane, she sometimes drugs her with laudanum. It is during these moments that Rachel makes progress in her mission and steals some letters between Jane and Cassandra. But she‘s caught one day and like the good little spy she is, she reveals practically everything 🤦‍♀️. 👇 cont.

StayCurious She is told to leave and runs into Henry and Liam - one man she‘s engaged to and the other she‘s sleeping with. They go for a walk and Rachel is overwrought and ends up fainting. I‘m probably wrong, but I wonder if she could be pregnant? 2y

StayCurious @BarkingMadRead I mean she‘s on birth control but they‘ve been going at it like rabbits I think 2y

peanutnine @Mrs_B 🤣 I thought the same thing! Zero cool 2y
IndoorDame @Mrs_B agreed! Anything would have been better than that! 2y
IndoorDame @StayCurious omg, that didn‘t occur to me, but she totally could be pregnant, yikes!!! 2y
vonnie862 She couldn't lie? *shaking head* There could be a possibility that she's pregnant but it's most likely the corset and her panic attack. 2y
CoffeeNBooks @StayCurious I'm thinking she might be pregnant, too. 2y
Aimeesue Rachel is a VERY bad spy. 😂 2y
CoffeeNBooks @Mrs_B I know, right?! Surely at since point in their preparation for this mission they discussed what to do if caught in different scenarios- using counterfeit money, being found out as not actually being who they say they are, Rachel knowing too much about medicine, getting caught stealing Jane's letters... 2y
CoffeeNBooks ...at *some* point... 2y
Mrs_B @CoffeeNBooks they were too busy learning how to ride horses 🤷‍♀️ 2y
julieclair I bet she's pregnant. There have been several references to her birth control chip (or whatever it is), not having periods, etc. Why mention all that unless she was going to end up pregnant? And... telling Jane all... Huh??? Maybe she'll now try to convince Jane she dreamed it all under the influence of laudanum. And I feel sorry for Henry, even though he seems like a cad. She is playing him for such a fool. 2y
StayCurious @julieclair you‘re absolutely right. But let‘s not forget Henry lost her (d8 000 lol - he played her for a fool too. 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.15: Liam admits to having strong feelings for Rachel, enough that he wants to end his engagement. Does she feel the same or for her is it just lust? It‘s hard to tell even though she is telling the story. Jane falls quite ill and Rachel, despite the danger of being caught as the real doctor, tends to her. Jane and her sister must suspect even more that something is up with their new friends.

BarkingMadRead I think Jane totally knows they aren‘t what they seem. And Liam has way more feelings than Rachel. She‘s just horny 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
See All 16 Comments
Aimeesue @BarkingMadRead That was my take as well. But still, super frustrating not to be able to do anything for Jane. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I just am still not feeling the chemistry between Liam and Rachel, which makes it hard for me to excuse their behavior. I'm not a huge fan of them sleeping together when Liam is engaged, or Rachel's attitude that it didn't matter if she was in a relationship back home, as though staying monogamous to a partner is the same as being “owned“ by that person. 😑 2y
TheAromaofBooks It was funny that she brought up wondering whether the servants noticed that she's never had a period since she's been there, as I had been thinking about that earlier. I understand not wanting to deal with all of that in 1815, but it seems like the servants would definitely notice and find it strange. 2y
StayCurious @TheAromaofBooks they‘d assume she was pregnant for sure. And there‘s be no stopping the gossip. 2y
StayCurious @TheAromaofBooks I really find it difficult to like Rachel as a character. I liked Liam but now that he‘s a cheater…I‘ve lost interest 2y
TheAromaofBooks It was the cheating especially combined with the attitude... I'm sorry, but being in a committed relationship doesn't mean that person “owns“ you... it just means you've, I don't know, made a commitment?! I'm finding this story really interesting, but don't really like Rachel or Liam as individuals. 😕 2y
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks I agree. There's a big difference between being in a mutually committed relationship and being "owned". I'm not really liking Rachel, and I'm not overly fond of Liam, either. As a result, I'm not wild about the book. I have found that I need to be invested in at least some of the main characters, for me to love a book. 2y
Bklover @TheAromaofBooks I agree! I keep wanting to like Rachel and Liam, but they‘re making it very difficult. And the “she doesn‘t own me” comments make them both sound like they‘re about 12 years old. 2y
CoffeeNBooks I don't think they're going to make it out of there without being found out for something- whether it's not being who they say they are, being together, or Rachel being too knowledgeable about medicine. 2y
Chrissyreadit I love your posts! 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.14: Oh Rachel and Liam. For shame. You‘re walking a tight rope. Already at risk of being caught for multiple offences, and now you throw romance into the mix! When really you should be concentrating on doing your mission and getting ready to head back home. At least Rachel sort of got a bit closer through her conversation with Jane. Although I do think Jane suspects something is off with her. Tsk tsk I‘m shaking my head.

Aimeesue I'm aghast! What about the mission, Liam and Rachel??? 2y

BarkingMadRead They are playing with fire! To get this close and mess it up?!! 2y
MoonWitch94 Ughhhh 🤯🤯🤯 Literally screaming into my book! 2y
IndoorDame So many bad decisions in this chapter! Not only are Liam and Rachel complicating everything, but OUTSIDE?! Where anyone could see?! I know I have a modern day city-girl mentality, but still! And I also thought that conversation with Jane was really off. I hope it doesn‘t mess things up between the ladies. 2y
vonnie862 I wanted to throw my tablet. It was very stupid and reckless. They could have at least tries to get out of sight. I feel that this mission is doomed. 2y
Bklover Rachel and Liam. What you all said. 🙄. Oh, and I think Jane is definitely suspicious 🤨 2y
CoffeeNBooks I totally agree with everyone! I was already worried about Rachel's conversation with Jane- I think Jane can tell something is off. And then Rachel and Liam?! Seriously?! And outside like that? I'm sorry- they trained for this mission- neither of them would truly be this unprofessional. Honestly, at this point, I think it's just bad writing. Shame on the author. 🙁 I too, wanted to throw the book, but I'm reading it on my Kindle. 2y
julieclair Ditto what you all have said. This is getting ridiculous. 2y
Chrissyreadit @IndoorDame I honestly just thought cold, wet, need ALot of help dressing , so many problems with time and location- as well as WHO thinks this is furthering the mission!?!?!? 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.13: the main thing I couldn‘t stop thinking about is that they lost Qb000! And Rachel still has to pretend to be engaged. Henry‘s fine - he thinks he‘s about to marry a rich heiress. But I feel bad for Liam going along with Rachel‘s plan. It‘s his money too, and it was lost in a matter of days. Here‘s hoping they can actually make it home…being poor in the 1800s was no joke. Even if Rachel finds farming peaceful.

IndoorDame The implications of staying definitely just got more serious! Also really hoping they can make it back. 2y
See All 11 Comments
julieclair I still don't understand why Liam went along with that loan. And I also don't understand how Rachel can be so happy playing farmer, knowing that a letter is being written to Jamaica, and they may be exposed before they can get home. Not to mention that all their money is counterfeit, and what if Edward's checking up on them somehow uncovers that? I'm worried for them. Plus, they still don't seem to be getting any closer to stealing The Watsons. 2y
vonnie862 Your memes! ? Another face palm when reading that they lost the money. They had "good" intentions but I don't think they'll be able to change the past. However, I feel that they are going to get found out and, I'm stressed that one of them will not be able to make it back home. Oh, and farming? WTH? 2y
MoonWitch94 These memes are clutch! 😂🤣😂 2y
MoonWitch94 🤦🏻‍♀️🙄 The money!!!! These memes are CLUTCH! 2y
CoffeeNBooks I'm so worried they'll be found out before they can leave! I wonder what Liam was thinking with that huge loan. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I'm also not really buying the romantic feelings Rachel has for Liam. I feel like she tells us about them all the time, but I'm not sure how she got here, or why she's falling for him. I'm not sure how much longer I am going to be able to stick with the chapter-a-day pace - I'm starting to get very invested in finding out how this ends!! 😂 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.12: Oh Rachel, now you‘ve gone and done it. You‘ve entered into a secret engagement with Henry(And we all know that those end well) - And you‘re planning to donate a bunch of money to his failing bank. Good plan. Ugh - I just have a feeling this isn‘t going to end well.

CoffeeNBooks @IndoorDame I agree! It seems like she just keeps making bad decisions at this point. 2y
IndoorDame @CoffeeNBooks completely! Until this chapter I was holding out hope for her, but I‘ve come around to the group opinion that she‘s not mature enough for this gig. 2y
Aimeesue Oh, Rachel, Rachel, Rachel. I am not sure you're cut out for this kind of work. 2y
julieclair I do like that Rachel has a heart, and is trying to make things better for the 1815 folks. But she seems to have been distracted by her 1815 life, and forgotten why she is there. 2y
Bklover It seems like Rachel is thinking with her heart and her hormones. Good intentions but she‘s all over the place. 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.11: had issues trying to post yesterday (tags weren‘t working and the post published twice) - here‘s hoping things work better today! So…is it just me or are things just super awkward between Liam and Rachel? I‘m not shipping them at all! Rachel needs to get her head in the game and stop acting juvenile. Okay, that may seem harsh, but there are big things at stake, aren‘t there? I‘m finding it hard to like her. Anyone else?

BarkingMadRead I‘m not a fan of the Liam Rachel thing, and she needs to stay in her lane! Also has troubles posting yesterday. Today seems to be better! 2y
See All 16 Comments
IndoorDame No, I‘m definitely not shipping them! In fact, I don‘t think I‘m in favor of any of the romances/potential romances that are on the table. I‘m not disliking her though, I feel for her being independent and educated and trapped somewhere she has zero autonomy. 2y
Aimeesue Lol at the Star Wars pic! 😂 (edited) 2y
vonnie862 That Star Wars meme! 😂 2y
vonnie862 Yes, it's completely awkward. I'm surprised that a 30 something year old doctor is acting so rash. Rachel knows the dangers of sleeping with Liam during the project but is acting like a teenager who is being ignored by her crush. I don't like it at all. I really enjoyed Rachel at the beginning but her juvenile behavior is annoying. 2y
CoffeeNBooks I feel like this story has veered off on a weird path, and I'm not sure why. And I feel like the Austen storyline is just treading water. I really want to like this book, so I hope it gets back on track soon. I did find the conversation Rachel and Liam had about the possibility of not being able to return to the present pretty interesting. 2y
julieclair I agree with @CoffeeNBooks that the story has veered off in a weird direction. It seems as though Rachel's sex life (real, imagined, desired, lack thereof) has become a more prominent theme than their assigned mission. 2y
Chrissyreadit I completely agree! 2y
Bklover I agree with all of you! Rachel needs to get her hormones in check. She‘s becoming annoying and it feels like we are straying off into a different story! 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.10: well, that was awkward! Henry proposes…and what an…icky?…proposal. Now Rachel has to decide how long to lead this poor sap on. Although I do think a big part of his interest lies in her money. How could it not? And that conversation with Liam was confusing to say the least. Do they like each other? Is he telling her not to marry or sleep with Henry? I think the two of them need to focus on the task at hand and avoid feelings.

vonnie862 That was a very awkward proposal. Is he into her money? Probably. But he definitely wants to get into her boobs and other places. Yuck! Now with Rachel and William...I am not feeling it. CoffeeNBooks I think that despite the awkwardness of the proposal, and the ultimate impossibility of it, she still wants to entertain the idea of it. I can't see this ending well. 2y
BarkingMadRead This took an ugly turn! There‘s such a thing as going too far 🤣 2y
IndoorDame How exactly did they plan to put her forward as a romantic interest for Henry as a key element of the whole project, and not plan what to do if he actually proposed?! Isn‘t a proposal exactly what you‘d expect to happen in 1815? 2y

StayCurious @IndoorDame I know right! Have they ever read Jane Austen?! 2y
julieclair This whole chapter was just weird. Henry nibbling the top of her dress? Really? And I don't have any idea what Liam was trying to tell her. Is he secretly in love with her? And Rachel is just being rude to lead Henry on. Sticking his nose in her cleavage? Soooooo romantic. 😂😂😂 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.9: Rachel saves Jane‘s niece from choking. Consequently she and Liam are invited to Chawton House and will be able to be close to Jane when she returns home. This is great! Except Rachel starts worrying that they‘ve altered history. She also saved Tom…will the future as they know it be the same? Tricky to think about - as with all time travel stories. Also, Rachel is attracted to Liam, but is being pursued by Henry🤷‍♀️😵‍💫🤔

IndoorDame The way they were talking about altering history and going back to a different future made me wonder if they‘ll end up in our version of the future. I‘m hoping not, because I still want to know more about the future they‘re from. 2y
See All 18 Comments
Chrissyreadit I am not loving some aspects of Rachel and the story at the moment. Surely she knew sex would be different for the time she was in the past. Also that she is toying with having a relationship with Liam as a cheater irritates me. It seems odd compared to the types of books Jane writes. 2y
julieclair @IndoorDame I'm wondering if they decide not to go back to the future, because they feel they've altered it too much. Liam seems to like 1815, despite the fact that his fiancee is in the future. 2y
julieclair @Chrissyreadit I agree. Rachel shouldn't be thinking about a relationship with Liam. Even though she seems to have convinced herself that he was not really in love with his fiancee, but rather her house! 😂 2y
IndoorDame @julieclair yes, that occurred to me early on as a possibility not because of the timeline, but just because the thought of staying would be enticing in so many ways. I think they both like 1815 more than they were expecting to. Concern about the timeline would definitely be a concrete reason for them to decide to stay. 2y
StayCurious @julieclair @Chrissyreadit can you imagine the scandal if they were caught in a compromising position? They‘re supposed to be brother and sister! 2y
StayCurious I feel as though Rachel should concentrate less on her libido and more on her mission 2y
Bklover @StayCurious Yes and Yes! 2y
BarkingMadRead Girlfriend needs to get some so she can focus 🤣🤣 2y
CoffeeNBooks Yikes! The thought that they've changed the probability field enough that the world they know is gone. 😳 @staycurious I thought the same thing, that Rachel needs to focus on her mission. It seems like they trained a long time for this, so it surprised me that she would be anything less than completely professional in her behavior. Especially with the stakes so high. 2y
vonnie862 I know the concern about altering the future is worrisome but...what if they were meant to be there? What if the future is the way it is because they were there? 2y
vonnie862 Also, I had to laugh when Rachel mentioned she went 2 months without sex. People gave gone longer than that and have been fine. Instead of trying to get into Liam's pants, she just needs to take "care" of herself then continue with the mission. This part of the chapter threw me off btw. 2y
vonnie862 On another note, Henry appears that he wants to marry Rachel. Is she going to go along with it just to get closer to Jane? 2y
Bklover @vonnie862 I do think it‘s a bit mean of Rachel going along with Henry‘s flirtation. 2y
julieclair @vonnie862 Ooohhh... Interesting thought that perhaps they are supposed to be there. 🤔 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.8: This chapter further explores the dynamics between the Austen siblings and their reactions to having Liam and Rachel insert themselves into their lives. Cassandra seems a tough nut to crack. This whole thing seems as though it will be impossible to get close to Jane‘s letters and manuscripts. Also, Rachel is still trying to figure Liam out.

BarkingMadRead Cassandra is super cranky! I wonder if Liam is right that she doesn‘t want to share Jane! 2y

vonnie862 Cassandra is the older sister, right? I feel that she may be the overprotective sister, making sure no one takes advantage of Jane. A little jealousy may also play a part. 2y
Bklover @BarkingMadRead Yes! I don‘t like Cassandra very much! 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.7: confession-I have a morbid fascination with the history of medicine and how horrible some treatments used to be. The fact that Henry, who is using mercury and bloodletting to cure his illness, actually gets better, is so interesting. And Rachel having to ask people to wash their hands - if I time travelled I‘d be such a germaphobe I think. Anyway, in this chapter the main takeaway is they are slowly getting closer to Jane.

Chrissyreadit I was wondering the same thing. Also it sounds like jaundice or hepatitis- I‘m very curious. 2y
See All 15 Comments
StayCurious @Chrissyreadit so I used to work for a liver doctor - all his symptoms- itching, dark urine, jaundice - all point to hepatitis. I‘m surprised he does get better because usually when a patient gets that symptomatic they need serious medical intervention and medicine - not leeches and mercury. The man must be lucky. (edited) 2y
vonnie862 @StayCurious I agree. Henry Austen was lucky that he got better. Sometimes I wondered how people survived certain medical procedures/treatments in the past. At the same time, it made sense why many people died when they got sick or gave birth. If I traveled to the past, I know that I would immediately get food poisoning. I have a very weak stomach. 2y
vonnie862 On another note, what is everyone's thoughts of the rest of Jane Austen's family? I was a little surprised with their behavior when they arrived and met with Liam and Rachel. 2y
StayCurious @vonnie862 I was surprised they weren‘t more reserved for sure, especially with strangers in the room 2y
CoffeeNBooks @vonnie862 @StayCurious I agree about the rest of the family. They seem to be so different than Henry and Jane. 2y
CoffeeNBooks I worry that this new doctor they're bringing in to see Henry is going to make him worse. 2y
peanutnine @vonnie862 I was surprised by how rude they were towards Liam and Rachel. Like I get that they're strangers but obviously Henry and Jane approve of them enough that they could have been more polite, at least to their faces 2y
Bklover I find the medical practices creepy too! I keep wondering if it would be possible for Rachel and Liam to have brought new viruses and bacteria back in time with them. 2y
StayCurious @Bklover ooh good point! Like what caused the die off in their own time? Was it disease? Do they carry it? 2y
IndoorDame @StayCurious @Bklover good question! The further we read the more curious I get about their own time and all the mysteries being hinted at about it. 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.6: Rachel fears Jane doesn‘t like her - and she‘s probably right - but that‘s ok because it seems as though Henry does. And Rachel is finding that she is attracted to Henry as well. Liam flirts with Jane - as well as Liam can flirt at least. He‘s probably more capable than Rachel gives him credit for. He got her talking at least.

IndoorDame Am I the only one annoyed that flirting is such a big part of their job assignment? I know it happens all the time, but it‘s SO overt here! 2y
See All 14 Comments
StayCurious @IndoorDame I guess it‘s one way to get close to their “targets” - but I‘d find it difficult if it was me. I can‘t flirt. Like at all. 😄 2y
BarkingMadRead Sooooooo awkward! And what a flimsy thing to rely on! 2y
IndoorDame @StayCurious haha. You‘re not missing anything. I don‘t anymore because 99% of the time those interactions are way more obnoxious than they are fun 2y
vonnie862 @IndoorDame you're not the only one. I feel that this flirting is going to lead to disaster. People are going to get hurt. The chapter ends with, "Maybe I've never met the right person..." I feel like Rachel is going to get her heart broken. 2y
CoffeeNBooks So much awkwardness with the interactions between everyone! I definitely feel like this isn't going to end well. 2y
Mrs_B @vonnie862 agreed, this is not going to end well. 2y
Mrs_B Is it just me, or does it feel like we‘re a significant portion of the way through the book and although a lot has gone on, nothing has actually “happened”. Does that even make any sense? #Pemberlittens Ch.5 Rachel is feeling stifled at being a woman in such a restrictive time, & especially a doctor. She feels helpless, like her hands are tied. In a surprising turn of events, Liam takes her to see Henry at an inappropriate time of day & when he is sick. surprisingly-instead of turning them away-he brings JANE to meet them! I‘m not quite sure if Rachel passed her test or answered her questions correctly. Still, contact has been made

vonnie862 Oh man, I think I would react the same way as Liam if I met Jane Austen. I completely understand how frustrating it must have been for Rachel to wait while Liam went about with business. I just wondered why Rachel, the doctor, was picked for the project if she cannot do much during this time period as a woman. 2y
See All 11 Comments
StayCurious @vonnie862 If the goal was to diagnose Jane‘s illness, maybe they think as a woman she‘ll be able to spend more time with Jane than Liam, a single man 2y
CoffeeNBooks @vonnie862 I'd react the same way Liam reacted at meeting Jane Austen, too! 😂 2y
CoffeeNBooks I'm curious how they're going to feel if they figure out what Henry's illness is, but can't do anything about it, because that would alter history. I'm sure that would be frustrating. 2y
peanutnine @StayCurious that's an interesting thought about Rachel being able to better diagnose Jane. I'm so curious as to what Jane thinks of her after this meeting. Even if she doesn't suspect time travel, she must think her a bit odd 2y
BarkingMadRead I don‘t know how they‘ll resist trying to save Jane either! I would totally want to! 2y
Bklover I imagine at this point Jane thinks she‘s a bit odd. She pretty much choked when they met. Have to say I probably would too. Also it‘s interesting that they don‘t examine people like they do now. @staycurious - I wondered that too, because otherwise why send a doctor? And a female one! 2y
Chrissyreadit I feel like even if dx the tx is not available so maybe more for information gathering. I do know it would drive me crazy to have a skill that is so discounted. 2y

#Pemberlittens Ch.4: their dinner is a success, but a great cause of stress to everyone. Henry acts a bit odd and then disappears afterwards and politeness (which dictates everything) says they cannot go visit him. They must wait. While they do, they hire more servants and find they now have absolutely no privacy in the home. Is anyone else worried about Jenks and what he might do?

KristiAhlers Janks is a character I‘d trust as far as I could throw him. He just leaves me feeling meh. 2y

CoffeeNBooks With Jencks listening outside their doors, I'm nervous for Rachel and Liam- I hope they don't accidentally say something that will make Jencks suspect that something is wrong about them. 2y

IndoorDame Definitely worried about Janks! And I‘m getting the vibe that firing him would be just as dangerous as keeping him in the house. 😬 2y
BarkingMadRead I am soooooo not a fan of Jencks, he‘s going out of his way to dislike Rachel! This cannot end well! 2y
vonnie862 Yes, I too agree that Jencks is a bit of a suspicious character. It's interesting on how much he dislikes Rachel but dotes on Liam. And with Henry, I think he's already sick. Rachel did notice he was a little yellow. 2y
Bklover I keep getting sidetracked by the kid, Tom, who now will have a different future. Oh, and having all those people in my house all the time would drive me nuts! 2y

CoffeeNBooks Wow- things are moving fast now! I love that Mrs. Smith initially says she'll need 2-3 weeks to get everything ready for a dinner party. 😂 You don't think about things like that. 2y
vonnie862 Dinner parties were more complicated back then so I felt bad for Mrs. Smith. Also, I was kind of weirded out with Mr. Austen's attention to Rachel. I know Rachel is supposed to get his attention but it still creeped me out with all his staring, especially her bosom. 2y

Bklover I‘m loving Rachel! Glad she rescued that poor kid! I think there is more to Liam than we‘ve seen so far. I am loving this so far! 2y
CoffeeNBooks Another tense situation when Rachel is waiting for Liam to return from his dinner with Henry. Why didn't he just call her on his cell phone?! 🤣 I love that Rachel helped the chimney sweep. I'm afraidc some of these impulses to do such things might get her in a difficult situation, though, as people wouldn't normally do that in 1815 London. At least, I don't think they would. 2y
vonnie862 I don't think I would do well if I find myself in the past all of a sudden. While reading this chapter and finding out that Liam got drunk, makes me wonder if he let anything slip. One is very honest when drunk. Also, I'm glad Rachel saved that boy. Reading the article saddened me very much. 2y
BarkingMadRead I‘m definitely worried about the repercussions of most of Rachel‘s actions, but I just love her! I don‘t think I would have been able to handle it either! 2y
julieclair Rachel is very much reminding me of Clare in Outlander. Having the heart and mindset of a modern woman, but living in very different times. 2y
Chrissyreadit @julieclair I agree- I like that this time travel gives more perspective about the struggles. 2y

Def getting the Doctor Who/ Connie Willis vibes from this one, but that's a good thing.
I'm a big fan of the time travel

#Pemberlittens Ch.1 - Very interesting way to start the book - faced by the stark reality that they are not in Kansas anymore - the dangers of Regency England are brought to life and always with reminders that these two do not belong. London sounds horrible! But I hate big city chaos. I would both love and hate this opportunity- as I think Rachel does. 👇

StayCurious It‘s terrifying that you‘ll be found out - but to succeed in what they‘re trying to do would make their lives richer. In case you‘re curious about the practice of hanging criminals‘ bodies in cages, see here: (apologies for the ads) https://allthatsinteresting.com/gibbet 2y

BarkingMadRead The part with the cage reminded me of the beginning of Willow 2y
KristiAhlers @BarkingMadRead me too! We are off to a unique start here. I can‘t even imagine what it would be like to be able to time travel. Part exciting and part terrifying I‘d think. 2y
IndoorDame I liked the line about not being able to shake the idea that everyone was dressed for some giant ren faire. It really made the time travel seem believable for me. 2y
TheAromaofBooks I can already tell I'm going to struggle to keep this to one chapter a day!! 2y
vonnie862 I'm gonna be honest, I was not expecting this to be a time travel book. I must have confused this book with a different Jane Austen book. So reading the first chapter was quite a delight for me because I love time travel anything. It was a great way too hook the reader by putting the reader right into the action. 2y
vonnie862 Cont...I was a little nervous for them when they went to the fabric store and I'm a little anxious of them being found out. The gibbeting thing was something that I don't think of for this time, so thanks for the article. 2y
MoonWitch94 The author does a great job of illustrating the anxiety & tension of this trip. 2y
CoffeeNBooks I really had no idea what this book was about other than Jane Austen, and I was thrilled that it started with time travel! I like how descriptive the author is- it's really helping me envision what London is like, and helping me get a good sense of the stress and tension of the situation. I was very nervous when they were in the pub at the very beginning, and then again at the fabric store. 2y
Aimeesue As a Whovian, I'm delighted with the timey-wimey issues. And I must say that I was very jealous at the mounds of linen at the fabric store - linen's my fave and is so expensive these days! 2y
Bklover @StayCurious I googled a gibbet- I had never heard of them. Liam makes me a bit nervous. I think that‘s because he‘s so nervous! I do love a time travel story! 2y
Bklover @CoffeeNBooks Me too! Your whole post! 2y
Chrissyreadit I loved the first chapter and am very curious about what happens because of the seeming ominous hints. 2y
julieclair I love London, but the London of 1815 sounds petrifying! I think the author does a great job of describing not only the sights, but also the sounds and smells. I must admit I‘m very nervous for them. The last paragraph of the chapter, where she talks about their innocence and ignorance, makes it seem like there are some difficulties ahead… (edited) 2y
mollyrotondo The gibbeting practice is horrifying. Their arrival is welcomed with such a disturbing part of history and really sets the stage for how careful they need to be on this mission. I really like the writing so far. The imagery is really great. I also like how nervous they are because it‘s very realistic lol I‘d be terribly nervous. 2y
Jennifer3 I signed up to do this read just because it was about Jane Austen and I haven‘t ever dived into her work. I think this will be a year of classical reads mixed in with exciting reads like this. Am a little behind so finished Chapter 1 today. Hope to get caught up this week! 2y
StayCurious @Jennifer3 wow a Jane virgin! So glad to have you 2y
