The Mill on the Floss (1860) .Novel by
The Mill on the Floss (1860) .Novel by: George Eliot (World's Classics) | George Eliot
The novel details the lives of Tom and Maggie Tulliver, a brother and sister growing up on the fictional river Floss near the fictional village of St. Oggs, evidently in the 1820's, after the Napoleonic Wars but prior to the first Reform Bill (1832). The novel spans a period of 10-15 years, from Tom and Maggie's childhood up until their deaths in a flood on the Floss. The book is loosely autobiographical, reflecting the disgrace that George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) herself had while in a relationship with a married man.... Mary Ann Evans (22 November 1819 - 22 December 1880; alternatively "Mary Anne" or "Marian"), known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. She is the author of seven novels, including Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Felix Holt, the Radical (1866), Middlemarch (1871-72), and Daniel Deronda (1876), most of them set in provincial England and known for their realism and psychological insight. She used a male pen name, she said, to ensure that her works would be taken seriously. Female authors were published under their own names during Eliot's life, but she wanted to escape the stereotype of women writing only lighthearted romances. She also wished to have her fiction judged separately from her already extensive and widely known work as an editor and critic. An additional factor in her use of a pen name may have been a desire to shield her private life from public scrutiny and to prevent scandals attending her relationship with the married George Henry Lewes, with whom she lived for over 20 years. Her 1872 work Middlemarch has been described by Martin Amis and Julian Barnes as the greatest novel in the English language.

mcctrish Poor Tom is surrounded by fuck ups 🤣🤣🤣 2d
dabbe I may be giving an unpopular opinion here, but I think Tom nailed some of Maggie's worst traits--even though he was a dick about it as usual. Maggie's overwrought passions are going to get her into trouble--IMHO. 2d
BarkingMadRead @dabbe he‘s 💯 correct. With zero tact 🤣 2d
KAO All in all, it still seems a shame that Tom and Maggie don‘t have a more mutually supportive relationship. It would be a bit of comfort for them in these trying times! #admittedlypollyanna-ish (edited) 2d
Bookwormjillk Usually I like one of the kids over the other but they both were annoying in this chapter. 2d
Clare-Dragonfly I don‘t really see how Maggie got “Tom is in love with Lucy” from what Bob said but I‘ll go with it! Will the couples reconfigure leaving poor Philip alone? Also, did you notice that Bob‘s wife is short?! As a short person I was very amused 😂 2d
Leftcoastzen Yes , I wish Tom & Maggie were closer , he‘s always pretty harsh but agree with @dabbe he points out traits in Maggie that could lead to issues! 2d
ElizaMarie Tom has some points but he is such a jerk about it. He is cruel to Magggie, I feel like it just shows how immature he is. 2d

mcctrish #tetchytully takes the easy road out again 6d
Leftcoastzen Doesn‘t take a lot of thought to wonder since father fought with Wakem & Wakem owns the property they may get turned out. Tom did the hard work to earn the money to pay the debt . And this is his reward? Tully just had to fight to his own detriment 😡 6d

Bookwormjillk Ugh. Fricken #TetchyTully 6d
ElizaMarie Wow! Okay, so I kinda felt blindsided with this. I mean the fight was coming, we know that, but... to have been so worked up that he ups and dies! And of course his #PigHeadedness totally screws his family over. Not to speak ill about the dead but... Talk about #DadOfTheYear 6d
Clare-Dragonfly Jeez! I wonder if I‘d feel differently if we‘d actually seen depictions of how Wakem treats #tetchytully as his employee over the years but as it is… Tully is a freaking idiot jerk. 6d

mcctrish I‘m glad Tom saved the day but I still can‘t stand him. I thought he‘d snuck the money in the tin. If the debts are paid doesn‘t #techytully still need a job? 1w

mcctrish @BarkingMadRead he‘s a bit rash when it comes to #snakywakey 1w
Ruthiella @mcctrish I thought too Tom would sneak the money in to the tin. And for sure, even if the debts are paid, both he and Mr. T. have to work ie, stay at the Mill or find somewhere else. So this is all very performative. 1w
mcctrish @Ruthiella right! Doesn‘t their house come with running the mill? So his debts are paid and he leaves his job and now he‘s homeless too? Mrs Tulliver is going to lose her shit! #firsttheteapotsnowthehouse (edited) 1w
eeclayton It felt to me like Tom wasn't saving the family to save the family but to bask in the glory 🫤 1w
Clare-Dragonfly I am worried now that Tom has made this big announcement but doesn‘t literally have the money that something will happen to prevent them from getting it 😬 1w
julieclair @mcctrish I had forgotten about the house being tied to the mill. Ugh…. this can‘t end well. 6d

mcctrish It happened faster than I thought #maggiespeaksthetruth I wonder if Tom will actually hear and understand Maggie‘s words later on? How he is inherently mean? I pity any girl he sets his eye on ( I don‘t think Tom is wrong though that #techytully being upset with Phil and Mags would be nothing compared to #snakywakey ‘s response or how compromised Mags would be if it was known she was meeting up with a boy) 1w
TheAromaofBooks @mcctrish - That's the thing, Tom wasn't 100% wrong; I think he was actually right about a lot of what he said, but wowsers he sure is one self-satisfied, obnoxious kid. Such an uncomplicated conscience - if I do it, it's right; if I don't do it, it's wrong 😂 Poor Maggie. I was glad that she at least put the vow into her own words! 1w

Ruthiella Tom could have been more compassionate, for sure. I did like how Maggie told him off-even though it will not soak in-he is so sure of his own correctness. 1w
Bookwormjillk Yeah I was liking Tom for a while but today I was team #ShutUpTom 1w
dabbe I couldn't help but also notice that this chapter ends with Maggie actually being a wee bit glad that the secret is out in the open and that she can't see Phil anymore. Maybe she loved him but not enough. And Tom, well, maybe a new hashtag: #tommytemper? #oy

Leftcoastzen Tom is so overbearing, he feels he‘s the only thing holding it all together.Poor Maggie has so few privileges or prospects because of the situation.I think she loved talking with Phil & having a little secret.Like @dabbe I think she felt relieved. She doesn‘t care for Phil enough 1w

KAO I kept having to reread sentences, as my mind wandered pitifully during this short chapter. Thank goodness this didn‘t go on longer! #WhereAreYouMonday

Apparently based on Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, I am still with Maggie Tulliver and co. in the mid 19th century reading for #HashtagBrigade . The “real river” is the Trent and it is quite imposing looking. “Floss” sounds so sweet and gentle. But the Trent is known for its dramatic flooding that can even change the course of the river.

mcctrish @dabbe is it the time period? I did care but it‘s getting harder 4w

dabbe I just despise the derogatory terms used against poor Phil and his back. I know those were the words, but still ... in the #ShardlakeBR series, the lawyer, Shardlake, calls himself a hunchback as does pretty much everyone else--even Henry VIII in an extremely volatile way. #peoplecanbesocruel 1mo

Clare-Dragonfly I hope they become friends and Philip helps Tom with his Latin and drawing! I like Philip, but that‘s probably because I was a shy, bookish kid like him… and because him having a hunch due to a childhood accident makes me think of Mr Benson, the minister from (edited) 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly I was thinking of him as well! 1mo

KAO Whew. That chapter was rather long and somewhat tedious (though I liked the bit of life reflection in the last lines). Maybe the feeling that this chapter would never end parallels Tom‘s feeling about this long and tedious academic term. 1mo

TheAromaofBooks This is actually interesting to read after Lark Rise to Candleford. I feel like a lot of the things we read about in that book as generalities are happening in this story. 1mo
mcctrish @TheAromaofBooks this is the story that goes with Lark Rise‘s accounting lists. Also I‘m some mad at Glegg calling in her money and poor sister Tulliver living in squalor has to figure out some way to magic cost savings out of thin air 1mo
julieclair I never could get into Lark Rise… but I‘m liking this book. I keep hoping I‘ll someday finish Lark Rise, but I must admit that hearing that it contains accounting lists is not motivating me, @mcctrish ! 😂 1mo
ElizaMarie I‘m glad Tully had a change of heart and not insisted to call in the debt. 8 kids and no money - there is no way sis could have survived - unless she sold the kiddos 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @mcctrish I don‘t think Glegg did call in her money. Tulliver is just being excessively proud and trying to pay her back before she does 🙄 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Clare-Dragonfly that‘s the impression I got as well, I was surprised he was going to that much effort 1mo
mcctrish @julieclair it just felt like an accounting list 🤣 1mo
mcctrish @Clare-Dragonfly I thought I‘d missed something with the calling in - so he was just over reacting to his wife talking about it. Thank goodness he didn‘t crush his sister and family #oldladywholivesinashoe 1mo
Leftcoastzen I think he has his pride & would like to pay her off . So maybe he could tell her off !😁 Tully saw how tight it was for his sister with all those mouths to feed and couldn‘t do it . I liked the description of the basic poorness of the area as he rides in. Foreshadowing that there isn‘t money to be had . 1mo

julieclair Sister Gregg is on my last nerve. 1mo
Morr_Books @julieclair Agree! I did enjoy Mr. Glegg - plus Mr. Tulliver vs. Mrs. Glegg. 1mo
Bookwormjillk Some things never change though with the drama about meal times and people refusing to just have a snack for goodness sakes. Or maybe that‘s just my family. 1mo
mcctrish Mrs Tulliver hurt her sister‘s feeling wearing her own hair aka Glegg who‘s got her third best fake hair on cuz it‘s a weekday 🤯 which is a wonderful lead up to berating Maggie so much she chops her own hair off just to show Glegg. 🤦🏻‍♀️ maybe she can sell Glegg her hair ? 1mo
BarkingMadRead @mcctrish Glegg can suck it! She‘s the worst! 1mo
mcctrish Glegg is the worst 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly I think Glegg might be a worse aunt than Mrs. Norris. 😱 1mo
dabbe @julieclair 🎯🩵🤣 1mo
Ruthiella “And uncle Pullet had a great natural faculty for ignorance.” 😂😂😂 “Well, if I may be allowed to speak, and it‘s seldom as I am,” said Mrs Glegg.” (edited) 1mo
ElizaMarie @Ruthiella 😂😂😂😂 1mo
Leftcoastzen When I was reading all the back & forth with the aunts , I‘m thinking why do they put up with them , especially Gregg . The Tullivers just seem more down to earth. Maggie is a wild one , no doubt. I‘m getting the feeling that Tom will be insufferable after a bit of education 🙄I‘m behind this week .Loving the book though. 1mo

dabbe I am not liking Tom at all. So high and mighty and always wanting to exact justice! Maggie adores him yet he abuses her. All of them do, except the father seems to favor her a bit. Childhood can be so brutal. And the animal abuse? Horrific. 🤬 1mo
mcctrish This chapter just had me mad, Mr Tulliver telling Mrs Tulliver to invite them all and she‘s like “the work of it, more food to make, leaves for the table, dishes to get out” and no one‘s helping her and none of them get along as he puts on his hat and strides off 1mo
rubyslippersreads If there‘s animal abuse (especially cats), I think it was the right choice for me to skip this. 😼 1mo
ElizaMarie I hated Tom with his little mind games with his sister here. She adores him. And did everything she thought she could to make him happy - offered him the better piece and everything! Ugh! He is mean. 1mo
TheAromaofBooks Honestly both Tom and Maggie scare me in their own ways 😂 1mo
Morr_Books I am weirded out by the conversations between Maggie and Tom. It seems more like a marriage than a sibling relationship. 1mo
Morr_Books A lot of serial killer tendencies (killing of animals, etc.) with some of these characters. Not at all what I was expecting from this book. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Morr_Books 💯 on both, I definitely wondered about the serial killer aspect 🤣 should be interesting to see how this progresses 1mo

Bookwormjillk I don‘t think he was wrong though about the rabbits? Oh well. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk definitely not wrong! 1mo
See All 15 Comments
dabbe I worry about Maggie. She ignores the rabbits and lets them starve to death and takes out her aggressions by stabbing a doll voodoo-style while in the attic. This can not bode well for her psyche. And Tom loving-hating her within minutes. Granted, what she did to the rabbits was awful, but still. 1mo
Bklover @Bookwormjillk @dabbe You‘re right about the rabbits. I‘m even mad at her for that! But I hate all of this “I won‘t love you anymore”. Even mom says it. Anyway. I just wanted to mention the last sentence of the chapter is gorgeous! It‘s the narrator speaking about childhood memories. 1mo
BarkingMadRead @Bklover the writing is just beautiful! 1mo
dabbe @Bklover 🤩😍🤗 1mo
Morr_Books I may have an unpopular view, but I'm kinda on team Tom... for this chapter. 1mo
ElizaMarie AND the mom quickly again goes to Maggie Drowned! What is with the drowning, maybe her momma lost her sister to drowning. Or do people just up and drown all the time? Is drowning the new boogieman? 1mo
BarkingMadRead @ElizaMarie I really hope we get some clarity on this, I need me a good backstory! 1mo
mcctrish @Morr_Books I‘m team Tom too! He asked 2 people to check on his rabbits and they both let him down 👎🏻👎🏻 and he‘s not allowed to be upset ( mom is a bit theatrical with the drowning ) 1mo
Clare-Dragonfly @ElizaMarie I think it‘s just because they live close to a river, but maybe there is something… 1mo
ElizaMarie @Clare-Dragonfly Oo that makes more sense than it being something more nefarious. 1mo
Leftcoastzen Why doesn‘t mom just say stay away from the river ! If my mom said stay away from the river , she would have told me why , and I would have stayed away from the river ! 😁 1mo
Leftcoastzen I was miffed everyone let Tom down as well , it was a simple ask , Maggie is young but should have been able to look after a couple of rabbits. The parents don‘t look after her , I know people had plenty of work in those days. 1mo
