Happy Jolabokaflod…from Iceland! I‘m just here for a brief stopover on the way to Ireland, but what a perfect day to be in Iceland for a bookish person!

The very little daylight thing is no joke. The sun rises after 11 am and sets by 4! 😮

Jennifer, I didn't get to take a picture of the mailer, but it is coming USPS in a padded envelope. I'm excited to take part in this holiday tradition from Iceland! If you accidentally open it at least the book is wrapped!

Thanks @MaleficentBookDragon for organizing this swap!

#readaroundtheworld participants - January is Iceland. Feeling ambitious? Immerse yourself in your travels and add an extra challenge of making or eating some Icelandic cuisine this month. Post a photo of your book and meal to earn yourself some bragging rights.

Not going to lie, after spending the morning looking up Icelandic food, I‘m feeling a bit squeamish. But I‘m going to try to find something fun to make.

JenP Share your ideas and recipes throughout the month 7y
JenP I will be making this dark Rye Bread recipe: https://www.saveur.com/article/recipes/icelandic-dark-rye-bread 7y
julesG I cannot recommend the fermented shark - a friend brought some back last year. 😨😲 The rye bread is good. 7y
See All 20 Comments
JenP @julesG yeah, I will not be eating that 7y
bedandabook Iceland, partly because of their love of books and partly because of the Northern lights, is somewhere I‘ve always wanted to go. The food worries me though! Fermented shark?! 🤢 7y
JenP @bedandabook I have always wanted to go too. They do have a bunch of traditional food that looks good to me but I don‘t recommend doing a google image search 😂 7y
tricours Haha! I must admit I‘m not very familiar with Icelandic food, just Skyr and licorice candy! I‘m guessing lots of fish... 7y
JenP @tricours their fish dishes look pretty good to me. It‘s the lamb heads I find less appealing 😬 7y
tricours Lamb heads are a Norwegian thing, but it‘s not really easily available everywhere and probably not cheap either. I‘ve always wanted to try it! 7y
JenP @tricours I‘m a pretty adventurous eater but that‘s not one I want to try. I have seen versions of it elsewhere. I‘m guessing that Norwegian and Icelandic foods have a lot of crossover given what‘s readily available 7y
JenP @tricours are you Norwegian? 7y
tricours Iceland was settled by Scandinavians so ancient food traditions will coincide! I‘m Swedish, but I live in Norway. As a general rule, you‘ll find lots of smoked, dried and fermented food around here! 7y
JenP @tricours I do love smoked and dried fish. I don‘t love fermented foods but probably because it‘s not something I grew up eating. I‘ve always wanted to visit Sweden and Norway (and Iceland) because I‘ve heard such wonderful things. Although for some reason Swedish and Norwegian food appeals to me a lot whereas Icelandic food less so. 7y
JenP Ooh and I just read about a festival in March: Taste of Iceland in Boston so I may have to go explore 7y
tricours I‘m actually eating two fermented types of cabbage right now 😀 Sauerkraut and kimchi! 7y
JenP @tricours 😆 I have yet to eat a sauerkraut dish I like. But the rest of my family loves it. I guess I don‘t mind kimchi. I wish we were “traveling” to Norway or Sweden this challenge. Would have loved to see all your recommendations! (edited) 7y
catiewithac Enjoy! (I‘m sticking with book only) 😉 7y
hilded Lamb heads are actually really tasty @JenP; but it certainly can be a challenge eating all of it (like the eye for instance). Tastes just like "pinnekjøtt" for your reference @tricours ?By the way, Icelandic restaurants serve really nice dishes, but it is very expensive. Was the recipe you tried a success @JenP? (edited) 7y
tricours Well now I must try it! @hilded 7y
JenP @hilded I bet it is tasty but it‘s so different from what I‘m used to that it makes me a little squeamish. I haven‘t tried the bread yet bc I only just found dark rye flour. I had to special order it bc my local stores didn‘t have it. U will make it this weekend! 7y

Iceland sounds like my kind of place! 🇮🇸

minkyb I told my family (2 grown daughters who will be home for the holiday) that we should do this, and the reply was, “Mom, we already do that. It‘s not new.” Smartass children‼️😂 7y

jfalkens My husband and I are doing it this year 😀 7y
[DELETED] 3803335244 I love Iceland! Did you know they have a name registry for babies, you have to have your baby name approved by the government before you name them. I thought that was funny. They have a pre-approved list of names too. My names not on it! Lol 😂 just something I thought was interesting. 7y
