This is the first book I taught as a student teacher!

Charlotte Doyle is traveling home from school in England to Rhode Island in 1832. Charlotte finds herself the lone passenger with a cruel captain & a mutinous crew. What begins as an exciting ocean crossing turns into a nightmare, where Charlotte is put on trial for murder.

Lively YA story of young girl who deals with a lot of troubles on a ship from England to the US in early 1800s I think. A good tale with a strong heroine. A little hard to believe though.

Started a YA book I haven‘t read before.

Between a pick and a so-so as it took a while for the story to get going. It was also darker than I thought it would be. However, all in all, fairly enjoyable.

Hadn‘t read this since my teens! One more down for #rereadingsummer.

I love historical fiction so I should love Avi more but he‘s really hit or miss with me. This will probably be the last of his I read. Quantity vs quality? This was ok but as they say, nothing to write home about it.

This was more gothic and dark than I expected- in a good way! Knowing that bad things were going to happen I was on edge the whole time.

*spoiler alert*
I thought the ending was very interesting and kind of sad, very similar to how I felt about Frodo at the end of LotR!

Book 3 of #ReverseReadathon!

This book was published in 1990 and I must have read it a dozen times after publication. I loved this as a teen.

So when the #Booked2022 challenge had the prompt of nautical novel, this book came to mind.

The reread was just as charming and amazing as the first dozen times that I read it. Definitely a pick!

After months (maybe years!) of hearing from the friends in my podcast community about how amazing Avi‘s The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle is, I‘m in the club! I FINALLY got to read this 1991 Newbery Honor winner — and I *get* it now. I was lucky enough to welcome Jordan from Jordy‘s Book Club as a guest for my new ep, on which we discuss the book and what it says about race, gender, class, power, and morality. 🌊⚓️ Link to listen in my bio!

These are the books I‘m giving to my nieces & nephew for their Dec. birthdays and Christmas. True confession: I‘m reading/rereading them all before I wrap them up. I say it‘s to make sure the content is ok (their parents are pretty strict) but really it‘s because I love kid lit & want to be able to talk about the books with them!

I found it in the library and it seemed interesting.
It is about a 13 year old girl who goes through a sea voyage that has changed her life forever. She boards the Seahawk ship and is then ranked as one of the crew members. Her captain, Jaggery, accuses her for murder and is soon then found guilty. She goes through a life and death struggle but soon after is reunited with her family and is home safe.

It has been so many years since I read this, but I recall pieces of this story. Charlotte is strong and opinionated and ends up working alongside a crew on a ship. #LeavingPort #SoaringScores

Forgettable

1) I have a lot of favorites, but I read this one when my bro was supposed to be reading it for school lol
2) Cake...I just love frosting so much.
3) Cooking & I like exercising, I like kickboxing workouts and swimming. I would love to get more involved with more physical outdoor activities though.
4) Not sure, I'd love to travel. Lately I've been thinking of moving to Vermont for at least a bit some day.

This book is one of my absolute favs! I was a little unsure of reading it at first but I fell in love with it almost instantly ~ Does anyone have any suggestions of what I should read next?

This one book that put the other books in shame. Frowning hard at all those insults and talks about the mc being a "girl", I still managed to get through this tiny book. If my school hadn't made me read this, I wouldn't even know what it is to read a historical fiction (you know, i never read those types of books. i'm into paranormal romace). The book explains how any person can change into anyone.

Had you asked me in second grade to #TellUsYourFavoriteBook I would have instantly responded with this one! I remember trying to convince friends to play out the scenes using our living room couch as the Seahawk! This is my first time experiencing it on audio, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it again! Every year I pick and author and read as many books of this as possibles. This year I chose Avi. Many of these will be reread, but not all. And he's still writing with a new one either just out or due soon. #avichallenge

Though it's a toss-up whether I'll read Kindred or re-read Wrinkle in Time for the time-travelling prompt. The rest of this stack just looked interesting, and I'm never one to pass up Philippa Gregory.

This is a #sentimental book. It's probably the book that most fostered my love of reading. I have had a few copies over the years. I no longer own this book, (I think) but I will again someday. 1 is my fav. 2 is the copy I originally read when I was a child, 3 is the copy I used to teach from, 4 is ugh, 5 is kind of ugly, and 6 should be burnt. #fallintoreading.

My heart soars to find a strong female character for upper elementary children!! 🌊🌊🌊🌊⭐️.
While it may not be historically accurate all the time, it is written well and enchanting.

Homework given at class tonight was to finish the book. I'm sure she didn't mean tonight exactly but it's happening. #nosleeptillbookless

Starting Children's Literature class today! Squee!

Today's #bookhaul from eBay arrived! Lots of two of my favorite children's book authors - Avi and Lucinda Landon's Meg Mackintosh books (illustrated mysteries you can solve if you pay attention, like a more fun female Encyclopedia Brown). Fun fact: I learned about Through the Looking Glass from Who Stole the Wizard of Oz? and I also once made a board game about and dressed up as Poppy the field mouse (in elementary school).

I don't know which was harder, recreating this cover or the enjoyment I had for Charlotte Doyle and her triumphs aboard Seahawk? Luckily I was able to do both, and as a young adult I was able to notice many things I missed. This is one of my all time favorite books. Every time I get a new chance to introduce it to kids, I jump on it. A new classic that should be a classic forever. #booktober #day16 #greatfirstlines

One of my very favorite books for young readers and totally #fullofadventure all the way through. I would put Charlotte pretty high on a list of badass girl heroes. Who else belongs on that list with her? #avi #kidlit

I read this book for my middle school's Battle of the Books (book trivia, for the uninitiated) back in the early 90s. I read it again lately, and I was taken back to being in seventh grade, reading hungrily about a girl who crossed the Atlantic; who chose a life of adventure over being a lady. 👍🏻

This book has echoes of The Witch of Blackbird Pond, which is interesting for many reasons, not least of which is that Elizabeth George Speare was born ~30 years earlier and was, you know, female. (Also, terrible cover art, isn't this?)
