People We Hate at the Wedding
People We Hate at the Wedding | Grant Ginder
"It's for the same audience that flocked to The Nest, Where'd You Go, Bernadette? or dare I say a little book you might be a fan of, Crazy Rich Asians."-- Kevin Kwan, New York Times bestselling author of Crazy Rich Asians"Sinfully good."-- Elin HilderbrandEntertainment Weekly's Summer Must-ReadA Publishers Weekly BEST SUMMER BOOKS, 2017New York Post Best Books of SummerRedbook's 10 Books You Have To Read This Summer"The summer's most compelling fictional exploration of affluence and envy. Like all the best beach reads, it eats the rich like so many frozen grapes." -- Bloomberg BusinessweekRelationships are awful. They'll kill you, right up to the point where they start saving your life.Paul and Alice's half-sister Eloise is getting married! In London! There will be fancy hotels, dinners at "it" restaurants and a reception at a country estate complete with tea lights and embroidered cloth napkins. They couldn't hate it more. The People We Hate at the Wedding is the story of a less than perfect family. Donna, the clan's mother, is now a widow living in the Chicago suburbs with a penchant for the occasional joint and more than one glass of wine with her best friend while watching House Hunters International. Alice is in her thirties, single, smart, beautiful, stuck in a dead-end job where she is mired in a rather predictable, though enjoyable, affair with her married boss. Her brother Paul lives in Philadelphia with his older, handsomer, tenured track professor boyfriend who's recently been saying things like "monogamy is an oppressive heteronormative construct," while eyeing undergrads. And then there's Eloise. Perfect, gorgeous, cultured Eloise. The product of Donna's first marriage to a dashing Frenchman, Eloise has spent her school years at the best private boarding schools, her winter holidays in St. John and a post-college life cushioned by a fat, endless trust fund. To top it off, she's infuriatingly kind and decent. As this estranged clan gathers together, and Eloise's walk down the aisle approaches, Grant Ginder brings to vivid, hilarious life the power of family, and the complicated ways we hate the ones we love the most in the most bitingly funny, slyly witty and surprisingly tender novel you'll read this year.

8-6-23: My 78th finished book of 2023! I wanted to like this book because I liked the Amazon movie based on it, however, it was very difficult to like because every character was seriously flawed in ways I couldn‘t relate to. Alice and Paul are hateful. They are siblings and their half sister, Eloise, is getting married in England. Her character is a little more likable. All in all I felt annoyed with their whining. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣7️⃣8️⃣

I actually did enjoy this book even though I spent the first half of the book hating most of the characters. Hashtag rich people problems much? This is a book about flawed people doing flawed things. There is not a neat bow at the end which I also appreciated. Another rare case of The Movie Was Better. If Taco Bell was in the book I‘d have raised it to 4 stars to be honest 😄 #JoyousJanuary #Jumpstart2023

I enjoyed this quirky read, except for this story had no real direction and the ending fell a bit flat. Luckily the characters were easy to relate to albeit egocentric as all get out.

This is not the funny snarkfest that the humorous title suggests. This is a seriously dysfunctional family, and I disliked most of the characters in the story. Each chapter is told from a different person‘s perspective, which works well. I enjoyed this book, even with the horrible, flawed characters and look forward to more reads from this author. Be forewarned that there are graphic sexual scenes and unresolved drug use, if that bothers you.

This book took about six weeks to drop into my ebooks from a library loan, so I was a bit surprised when I saw how low it was rated on goodreads and here. This is a dysfunctional family and I truly dislike most of the characters in this book. (In fact, one hilarious review simply said “All the people in this book are a**holes.”) I‘m okay with flawed characters and I‘m enjoying the book so far. Fabulous title, just not the snarky romp I expected.

I was *really* worried about reading this—people seem to love it or hate it. I didn't feel that strongly about it one way or another. I definitely could have done without Mark; probably could have done without Ollie. All in all, not particularly enjoyable, deep, enlightening, touching, or anything else one might expect from a dysfunctional family at a major life event. It makes me want to watch Table 19 again, though.

Meh... I have to say, the title is probably the most charming part of this whole book. It‘s a dysfunctional family story with two siblings and the wedding of their older half-sister at the heart of it. There were moments that felt real (the Chicago suburbs certainly felt authentic!!) but with characters that aren‘t even fun to love to hate... these #LonelyLonely people left me wishing I had read something more fun! #TimbitTunes

Cinfhen I bailed early on so I‘m kind of relieved to hear I made the right choice😉 6y

You pick up the book hoping it‘s juicy gossip about wedding guests. It almost is. In a twisty way. It‘s also almost a family history of sorts. You start out hating the whiny, dysfunctional people, only to have them redeem themselves in the end. Then there‘s the end, resolved a little too soon and too easily.

I was really looking forward to indulging in this one! The premise sounds as delicious as a piece of cake (see what I did there? 😂)- but it‘s sitting at a 2.8 on Goodreads 😱 I‘m such a star snob! What do you Littens think?
Also, I couldn‘t resist making the background a pic from my wedding... it may not have been a royal affair, but I sure felt like a princess that day!

I really enjoyed this one. It was lighter fare but not fluffy. It's a story of a dysfunctional family and none of them are perfect, no matter what they would have you believe. Despite how miserable some of the characters were I found myself liking them and hoping they would get their lives together. I enjoyed the little amounts of snark that they projected without going over the top. 4🌟

I enjoyed this book, but realize it‘s not for everyone. I love family dramas, crazy people and ridiculous situations. Towards the end, the “privileged” aspect of it did start to become a little much, but it ended just in time. If you can deal with characters who are more than wealthy, siblings who whine too much, and cattiness, this could be for you
