Rings | Koji Suzuki
The Inspiration for the New Major Motion Picture RINGS A mysterious videotape warns that the viewer will die in one week unless a certain, unspecified act is performed. Exactly one week after watching the tape, four teenagers die one after another of heart failure. Asakawa, a hardworking journalist, is intrigued by his niece's inexplicable death. His investigation leads him from a metropolitan tokyo teeming with modern society's fears to a rural Japan--a mountain resort, a volcanic island, and a countryside clinic--haunted by the past. His attempt to solve the tape's mystery before it's too late--for everyone--assumes an increasingly deadly urgency. Ring is a chillingly told horror story, a masterfully suspenseful mystery, and post-modern trip. The success of Koji Suzuki's novel the Ring has lead to manga, television and film adaptations in Japan, Korea, and the U.S.

‘A mysterious videotape warns that the viewer will die in one week unless a certain, unspecified act is performed.‘

I‘ve only seen the American version of The Ring. This is slightly different. Not as scary, but does have some creepy moments and an interesting storyline.

The first thing to know about Ring the book is that it's really not at all like either the Japanese or US movie versions. The second thing to know is that it's not really scary (but it is weird and a little creepy). It's decently enjoyable, the relationship between the two main characters is well done, and it's an interesting 1990, pre-Internet take on viral media, but there are a couple of twists where I'm just, like...why?

The_Book_Ninja Good review. I always wondered how the book compares to the film 9mo
ImperfectCJ @The_Book_Ninja The movies scare the heck out of me (or at least they did when I watched them probably 20 years ago). The book has tension, but not really much scare factor for me. 9mo

When the US version of The Ring came out in 2002, I was obsessed! It‘s a movie I‘ve watched repeatedly over the years. I‘m surprised it took me so long to read the book! Really loved the original story and characters. It was a pretty easy read, and the last 1/4 of the book was bone chilling. The two main characters Asakawa and Ryuji are interesting… I found Asakawa more likable overall. Would love to read the rest of the trilogy.

The_Book_Ninja Interesting you found the book chilling. I‘ve never read it but it‘s the visuals that made the film mindblowingly creepy…I couldn‘t imaging THAT video being as surreal in written form 11mo
AbstractMonica There‘s a part in the book very similar to the well scene in the movie! The book portrayed the main character experiencing claustrophobia and having a panic attack - that was really well written. The author also did a wonderful job describing the video images. In the book they were described as abstract and esp images from Sadako‘s mind. I can see how the film got really inspired by it. Sadako‘s backstory was much darker as well @The_Book_Ninja 11mo

I got an Amazon gift card for my birthday in July and decided to buy The Ring Trilogy by Koji Suzuki. I don‘t know if I‘m going to like it or not. I hope it‘s good. I want to read it because it sounds interesting. This trilogy inspired the movie The Ring. I‘ve never seen The Ring. If I like the books then I can watch the movie after. If not then I can watch the movie anyway.

As I don't subscribe to any streaming service but still watch only classic, old-fashioned TV (that's bad enough, it steals more than enough time) I don't know about all the Netflix etc. series based on books.
There are many interesting ones out there, for sure, but then I've got better things to do with my life than watch TV.

⤵️

Yuki_Onna Continued:

Thus, I'm going with the 'classic' movies.
*the tagged - Japanese original please, not the US remake;
*a few adaptations of Rebecca (and its BBC miniseries) as well as the
*1998 BBC miniseries of Vanity Fair by Thackeray.
*The Stardust movie - Neil Gaiman
*The 1967 German adaptation of the Agatha Christie story Philomel Cottage
Oh, AND
*the German 1971 adaptation miniseries of Wilkie Collins's The Woman in White

This is the book that started the films. It's a little different from the movie. A journalist and his eccentric friend investigate the death of four teenagers, who appear to have died after a watching a videotape. The plot and creepiness develop from there. At times the translation seems repetitive, using the exact same phrasing, but otherwise the book is a good pick.

AmandaBlaze The book came first. It's was kind of hard to get my hands on a copy through the library. Toledo has many branches and there were only two copies. One was missing. I was surprised to find that this was part of a trilogy. Spiral and Loop are the two other books. 2y

Pick! Set in 1989, a reporter finds some related deaths including his wife‘s niece and starts investigating with his friend. Videotape located and creepiness ensues. I did not think that this was as scary as the American or Japanese movie versions which stand up today, but the original story is very good, and original. If you enjoyed either Ringu or The Ring, you should enjoy this.

This is definately dated by how attitudes towards women/sex and tech are displayed and it honestly wasn't scary, but I liked it. It's basically Asakawa traveling to beautiful places and researching in the digging through physical files and going to the library kind of way. I already have the 2nd book and I'm pretty curious to see how they break or if they do break the curse later on. Also heard this series gets weirdly scifi, so wanna see that.

night_shift Also, really love this cover. The book vs movie post will likely be posted sometime in June. I need to rewatch the American version first. 2y

Did you know that the horror movie The Ring is based on a book, and that book is actually the first in a trilogy? It turns goes pretty zanily scifi by the end!

The books are called Ring (リング), Spiral (らせん), and Loop (ループ) and are by Suzuki Koji, who also wrote Dark Water (仄暗い水の底から). All are available in English!

Wow, I definitely didn't remember the plot from those movies. Way less scary than I expected, probably because you don't actually watch the movie and also there's no creepy kid climbing out of a well. More like investigative journalism...Still disturbing. Frequent toddler interruptions likely broke the suspense. And what the heck is up with ryuji?! #mommyreads #horror #japan #ripxii #littensdressedinblood #librarybooks

MidnightBookGirl The movie is based way loosely on the books! I liked the first one, but the rest of the trilogy was more sci-fi than horror. 7y
alanacristin @MidnightBookGirl I'm curious to check the rest out! It's interesting the series takes a genre twist.. I may try to watch the movie again but it's hard to fit in horror movies with a toddler around 😝 7y

A relatively inventive (for the time) psychological thriller that is occasionally bogged down by clumsy writing, poorly flushed-out characters, and overly-mundane descriptions. However, the good, for the most part, greatly outweighs the bad, and heavily recovers from some fantastic tension and situations that are almost surrealistic in nature. Overall a decent read.
