#AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville
April's #aam, and it took until June to finish. So deep and heart-wrenching in parts, I couldn't fly through it. Nao, the Japanese girl who is the main narrator of her own diary, is a character who will stay with me. I just felt at times that the author tried to do too much, and I could have stayed with Nao and her story more than Ruth's, the woman who finds her diary. The writing itself was magnificent.

Soubhiville Good job sticking with it! 5mo

willaful I often find myself frustrated with dual narrations, wanting to just stay with one. 5mo
dabbe @willaful Agree ๐Ÿ’ฏ. This one even adds a third at one point, the letters of Nao's uncle. It's also challenging when the POV changes; one is 1st-person and the other is 3rd. It makes one want to know who that 3rd omniscient voice is. 5mo

I loved this book for the most part. Naoko‘s story is heartbreaking & her family history is so beautifully portrayed.

I found Ruth & Oliver‘s story to be a tad pretentious; although covering some very important environmental themes.

But the ending which involved a magical realism time travel, a strange dream sequence & quantum physics just threw me off and ruined the entire experience.

I still like this book, but it could have been better.

I read and enjoyed these books for March and April‘s #aam picks.
The Harper was a solid thriller but I don‘t know that I‘ll seek out more of hers.
I had tried Ozeki before and been lukewarm, but was happy I tried again with her Booker-winner. The parts I was most engaged with were the ones set in the monastery.
Yay for a challenge I‘m doing well at! (not that finding new authors is a hardship ๐Ÿ˜œ)

Another hard/dark story. Hard to read because story has various triggers which were so descriptive.. I‘m not a fan of magical realism but author used it amazingly. Two characters connected in two time lines? Maybe...story use the concept of quantum multiverse. The ending was expected to me as I have seen in novels read using this concept. Beautiful and thoughtful lines even in those dark parts. Brilliant. Amazing narration by author. 4/4.5โญ๏ธ

Gissy First novel by this author. I bought 3 more books by her but this one was read for #AuthorAMonth @Soubhiville

Many topics discussed in this novel (culture, social actions, identity, etc) even the role of the reader in that wonderful quote by Marcel Proust. 4/4.5โญ๏ธ

Gissy @Sace It‘s good but I think you have to like magic realism and the multiverse concept. I‘m not fan of neither one but it kept my interest to continue reading it. Also, check for the triggers because it could be disturbed, uncomfortable, I don‘t know if I‘m using the correct word, for some persons. I liked the author as narrator in the audiobook. 7mo

I didn‘t dislike this book despite the bail. It was more of being unable to stay engaged in the story. I could feel it weaving it‘s way to a poignant ending, but I‘m not really in the mood for such a slow read right now. Maybe another time I will pick it up again.

Oh man, I feel like I need more days to digest this book. This is my first Ruth Ozeki book and it won't be the last. Usually, I am not a big fan of authors doing their own book narrations, but Ruth did a fantastic job. She sure is a wonderful storyteller!

The themes of bullying and suicide were very prominent, so there are definitely trigger warnings. However, I felt I learned so much about Japanese culture and I found it fascinating how โฌ‡๏ธ

Ruth, living on an island in Canada, discovers a diary (written by Nau who lives in Japan), letters from WWII, and a watch inside a Hello Kitty lunchbox on the beach. They presumably made the Pacific crossing from Japan‘s massive tsunami. Ruth, who is half Japanese is able to read the diary but not the letters. The diary, though, leads her to believe Nau and her father are intent on committing suicide. Ruth illogically thinks she can save them โฌ‡๏ธ

Texreader when in reality, given the time for the diary to cross the ocean, the deeds are probably already done. Everything about this situation though is unusual and time isn‘t what we think it is. This is a very dark book and there are so many trigger warnings, I made a list:
Sexual Assault

Prostitution
Tsunami
Radiation

This is a new author for me, and it was a pretty fascinating read. The story starts as a random encounter of two lives which slowly converge without ever really touching. Lots of beauty but also ugliness, peace and horror, pain and love. Just like life, I guess. The author is zen priest so the influences were very interesting. I will need to digest this book for a while.

I really liked the format the author used for this story. It was very clever. The story contained a dual timeline with a twist. It was humorous at times, and very sad at others. It certainly made it clear that things are not always as they seem. I loved the character, Nao. She has to overcome so much. I read this book as a recommendation, and I am so glad that I did. What a good story!! I love the way it ended.

This author came to me through a friend, who shared that Ozeki - an author who is also a Zen priest! - is a new favorite of hers. I'm so glad to have picked this up on her rec, this author's perspective is fresh and welcome. She manages to be funny and sad and hopeful at the same time, and the story is both philosophically Buddhist in its big questions and deeply personal to the characters. (cont...)

Tea_and_Starstuff Told in two time periods-a bullied teenage girl in Japan as she's writing in her diary, the late-middle-aged woman who found the diary washed up on Canadian shores and is reading it. A warning-awful, harrowing things happen to this teenager. Themes of suicide are heavily explored. But the narrative voice gentled the reading experience. The whole story was unflinching but also deeply compassionate, a combination that made for a compelling read. 2y

CBee @Sapphire by the way, I‘m reading this in anticipation of (hopefully) reading the Ozeki you put on your list for me ๐Ÿ˜Š 2y
CBee @Sapphire ooooo interesting! I‘m enjoying this very much and will look forward to reading more ๐Ÿ˜Š 2y
Sapphire @CBee there are parts of a tale for the time being that really stayed with me. I guess that is true of all of her work. Strong characters and unique settings that haunt you 2y
CBee @Sapphire I can see that! The settings are so vivid too. (edited) 2y
wisherwishinguponastar Showing up really late to this, but I can see why that quote jumped out. I quit Facebook because I spent most of my time seeking out likes instead of reading my friends‘ and family members‘ posts or enjoying myself. Ozeki sounds really insightful. 2y
CBee @wisherwishinguponastar I quit Facebook too! It was an endless doom scroll and just made me feel bad about myself. Never regretted it for a second! 2y

#12booksof2022 @Andrew65 June #litsylovereads

@jitteryjane724 I got the name of my collage app wrong, I use Incollage pro, not Piccollage.

Really want to read more Ruth, I think she might become an auto-buy author for me.

Andrew65 Looks well worth a read. 2y

#auldlangspine list (2023) from @Billypar I have read the tagged book many years ago. These are some of the books that have peaked my interest. So you want to talk about race & You‘ll Never believe have been on my radar but I haven‘t read them yet but ones I have wanted to. I‘m definitely interested in reading some of these other ones that I would have never thought of. Thank you for the selection & thank you @monalyisha for organizing

monalyisha Yo! looks great! Subdivision, too. And I love George Saunders! Enjoy your list. ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿฅณ 2y
Billypar Being a backlist reader, my end of year lists are always a bit strange, but here are a few notes: ๐Ÿ“š If you like historical fiction, The Book of Night Women is a great choice, but given the subject, every trigger warning imaginable applies so if you have questions about that, let me know. ๐Ÿ“š I recommend listening to But Beautiful on audio- the narrator is excellent. The book itself is pretty unusual - brief, poetic scenes involving jazz musicians. 2y
Billypar Yo! is halfway between a novel and story collection - each story has a different character in the main character Yo's life telling a story involving her - you meet a lot of great characters.๐Ÿ“š Katalin Street is great but if you haven't read Szabo before, I would consider starting with The Door - I think I liked KS more knowing her style going in. ๐Ÿ“š I just found out that Amber and Lacey have a follow-up coming out so perfect timing for that one! 2y
Billypar @monalyisha Reading Subdivision was a little like reading one of your crazier dreams adapted into novel form - very memorable. And George Saunders is a persuasive salesman for Russian literature - he could probably convince me to read tax law ๐Ÿ™‚ 2y

I liked this! It's not super plot-driven and I thought it might be a bit too slow-paced for me at first...but then I started to really appreciate it for that and got sucked in. It's left me with a lot to think about

(Note that it's also pretty heavy at points if you're thinking about reading it)

Off to a great start with September #BFC22! Yesterday I completed my workout and got to page 250 of A Tale For The Time Being!

I have a fairly long train ride this evening so I plan to read more then and I'll fit my workout in on my lunch๐Ÿ˜Š

Hi! My name is Nao, and I am a time being. Do you know what a time being is? Well, if you give me a moment, I will tell you.
Reading those opening lines in the book store, I imagined they were spoken by a cheerful alien rather than a suicidal teenager. But their immediacy struck me, and Nao's narrative has an urgency that compels us, just as it does for the fictional Ruth Ozeki who reads it. Magical in spite of large helpings of death and misery.

DivineDiana This was a strange book. At times, it was disturbing. Many layers. Connections. Miraculous. 2y
Billypar @DivineDiana Agreed - I enjoyed the different layers and how all the varied elements fit together. A very memorable read! 2y
Suet624 I often recommend this book and I‘ll be hearing Ozeki speak in a few weeks in Vermont. 2y
Billypar @Suet624 It's very well done - I really like creative spins on the 'found text' literary trope. I'll definitely be reading more of hers! 2y

A Tale For The Time Being would be a great pick for fans of Mieko Kawakami, though Ozekiโ€˜s prose is a little more smooth and inviting, a little less edgy and devastating. I was so thrilled to discover that the story lived up to the high, high expectations the blurb had set. Full review: https://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/a-tale-for-the-time-being-ruth-ozeki/

Don't think I'm going to complete any more books this month, so here's my #readingbracket2022 for June. May's book won overall as I know I'm going to read more in the series but am unsure whether I'll reread the tagged.

slategreyskies I loved The Priory of the Orange Tree! ๐ŸŠ ๐Ÿ’• 2y
jenniferw88 @slategreyskies I wouldn't be surprised if it wins overall - I think I'm still in book hangover mood from it! 2y

Lindy @Cinfhen It happens to all of us. Sometimes I can tell that it‘s just the wrong time for me to be reading a particular book, usually to do with my mood and external things in my life. But when that happens, I don‘t tend to return to the book later to try it again. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ 2y

I‘m an Ozeki believer! While I‘m not a fan of world building, I‘ve been enjoying magical realism lately. She writes characters you want to invest in that are grounded in our world.

Ruth lives in a remote town on Vancouver Island. She finds a plastic bag washed up on shore that contains Japanese teenager‘s diary plus old papers in Japanese and French. As she reads them, Ruth becomes invested in Nao‘s diary and problems. Both Ruth and Nao narrate.

KCofKaysville @Megabooks I've got a copy from a free little library, but am waffling about whether to read it. I'm not really into magic realism. 3y
Megabooks @KCofKaysville like I said, there‘s no world building. It‘s more literary fiction with a bit of magical realism thrown in. If you like literary fiction or historical fiction, I‘d give it a shot! 3y
EvieBee This one‘s one of my faves, Meg! Glad you liked it. 3y

jlhammar I loved this book. Pretty photo! 3y
BarbaraBB I enjoyed this one too. 3y
Hooked_on_books I keep meaning to get to this one. The Maritime Museum in Astoria, OR has a fishing boat that washed up after the tsunami. They had a whole video about tracking the family and returning some items from the boat to them that the put in their shrine. It‘s really emotional. The fisherman survived the disaster, but his daughter was lost in it. 3y
Megabooks @jlhammar thank you! So glad I read it. 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I can see you liking this one. ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ’œ 3y
Megabooks @EvieBee oh fantastic! I‘m glad I did too! ๐Ÿ˜€๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป 3y
Megabooks @Hooked_on_books I think you‘d enjoy it. Wow, that‘s really interesting re: museum. So much devastation with the tsunami. 3y
BarbaraBB Beautiful pic too by the way! 3y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB thanks! ๐Ÿ˜˜ 3y
Centique I tried this once and bailed (just me not the book) so I must pick it up again. So many people I know love it. I am really into magic realism, so that wasn‘t the problemโ€ฆ I think maybe the difficulties the girl in Tokyo was facing caused me some dread. 3y

The cover does not match the book!

This was extremely hard going and upsetting at times; one of the lead characters goes through an awful lot including explicitly described horrific bullying.

The ending is also quite confusing and ambiguous.

It is beautifully written and an interesting premise and construction but not what I would call an โ€˜enjoyable‘ read.
